Wanna hear the whole SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW Score'

Published at:  Aug 25, 2004 3:44:53 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... If you've been obsessive compulisive about SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW ever since that tiny mention in the L.A. Times back in like August of 2003, then here's a real delux treat in a bow for ya... The entire score to SKY CAPTAIN... or at least nearly 58 minutes of it. Now the problem/blessing is you won't be getting Track listings (which depending on their names could be spoilerish one supposes) and two it's one big ol hunk of music, not divided into skippable tracks. BUT - AOL has put it up for us to listen to, and that's exactly what I've been doing for the last 44 minutes...

Dear Harry,

Love the site. I never thought I'd be writting you
about anything since I am just an average joe with no
ties to the industry. But the other day I was browsing
through the message boards of the IMDB site, when I
came across a very cool link.

Apparently Sony Classical has a deal with AOL.com,
because the folks at AOL have put on their site the
entire soundtrack for the much anticipated Sky Captain
and the World of Tomorrow.

Here's the link to the "CD listening party" as AOL
puts it: http://mp.aol.com/audio.main.adp?mxid=1153566

I listened to the entire thing, and I must say that I
was impressed with the work that Edward Shearmur and
the London Symphony Orchestra have done.

Edward Shearmur is probably most known for his
orchestration of the Charlies Angels series, although
he has been in the business for nearly 15 years now.

The Sky Captain soundtrack is without a doubt the most
impressive work that Shearmur has accomplished so far
in his career. To get to record it at Abbey Road with
the London Symphony Orchestra is an added bonus. The
huge brass section is used quite well in all the
action queues.

The main theme for Sky Captain resembles a very
uplifting fanfare that is repeated throught the score.
The first couple of queues are mainly action-oriented,
and are reminescent of Gustav Holst's "Mars" from his
suite, The Planets. There is also a lovely "romance"
theme, although I cannot tell you which queue this is
on as the AOL thing doesn't give you the queue
numbers. Oh well.

All in all, I was very impressed with this soundtrack.
Hopefully we'll see more works like this from Shearmur
in the future.

Well, I don't know if you'll use this. I know you
mostly deal with the actual filmography itself, but
the soundtrack is an important part of any movie.
If you post this email, you can call me Maxwellhouse
(guess what my last name is) :D

Maxwellhouse, out!

PS. The score is pretty good.

The score is not too shabby if I do say so. Now for the movie to be good and we'll all be set.

    Opening song was blah

    by russman

I know they're doing a throw back thing, but that little trumpet fanfare was so obvious and predictable. It was boring - sounds like everything else from back then - corny. Maybe the rest will different. Looking forward to the movie though.

A blending of styles from great scores

    by sithscorp

I enjoy this score. It makes me think of a combination of two of John Williams' scores, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Superman, and even some Ep. 1 stuff. There are thematic and textural elements that remind me of both of those scores. There are also some cues that remind me of Poledouris' "The Hunt For Red October" score as well as some Silvestri's "The Abyss", and James Horner's "The Rocketeer". Does anyone else hear those things as well?

I just want to see the damn movie already!!! It seems like Sony has been running trailers for this forever, and I'm sure I'm not the only movie goer who's starting to feel like it's a big joke. "It's the film that's NEVER coming out, but that's ok! Over the span of a year, we've shown you the whole movie in a series of trailers!"

    Sounds fun

    by jaguart

Swashbuckling. Serialish. Full bodied with a brass forward attack, choral accents, sturdy strings and woodsy aromas. The Sky Captain melody is distinctive and bold. Recommended wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot.

Need help identifying a song title and artist (off topic)

    by immortal_fish

AICN TB'ers have never failed to impress in ID'ing a song artist and title, no matter how obscure. I'm in the US and there's a commercial with a Hummer lit by strobelight driving thru a forest at night with a techno tune playing with "This is going to make you freak" repeating in voice-over. Can anyone help ID the artist and title? Thanks!

Original, moving and triumphant, not at all derivatitive.

    by floyd gondolli

It takes the best parts of industrial drone-rock and jamaican dancehall and marries to them to a musical classicism forming a cohesive, refreshing sound unlike anyone has ever heard. It will go down a treat with the sumptuous visuals on offer. It is NOT the wholesale rip-off of a thousand musical scores you've heard before, as thee cynical nay-sayers will have you believe.

Oh My God, It's Cinematic Music!

    by bamf

I don't think I've ever heard cinematic music for a sci-fi action movie before! It's like from another planet! With, like, instruments and choral voices, which is a real first! Man, I've gotta call all my friends and tell them that Sky Captain includes cinematic music to make you laugh and make you cry. Like, oh, my God! Will this be the best movie ever made since celluloid was invented? Of course, AICN says so, so it's gotta be true, eh? Kind of like Shaun of the Dead is the zombie bomb, when, in fact, it's so not.

    SC Soundtrack

    by playhouse

The Williams and Goldsmith influences are evident as far as big brash themes for sci-fi/fantasy, but it does very much recall Horner, particularly early Horner.

    Do I hear music?

    by mrmaster

Indeed cinematic music. In fact symphonic music. Full circle have we turned. Korngold, Steiner, Williams, Horner, Tyler, (naysayers listen to Children of Dune!), Shore, and now this lad in full symphonic armor. It's wonderful!
