John Woo signed to produce BLUE PLANET'

Published at:  Aug 08, 1998 3:59:37 AM CDT

Hey guys and gals, this flick is one to watch. We're searching for confirmation on the John Woo aspect of this rumor, but as for the film itself, it looks so damn good it isn't even funny. If you click here, you'll find a report on the film, and the trailer. You'll be drooling by the end of it!

I haven't been able to confirm this for sure yet, but JOHN WOO has
apparently signed on as a Producer for "Blue Planet" -- the all cgi
action flick that Rainbow Studios has been working on.

I hear they've been in negotiations for some time (a good few months).

Tiny Stutterheim (former GM of Amblin Imaging -- SeaQuest etc) is the
Director and apparently John's team have already approved the
script... which I hear kicks ass.

More as I know it...

    CGI

    by jr asparagus

John Woo promised he would nevr make a film with CGI again after BROKEN ARROW. He said it looks too fake for him. He said he only likes real stuff. I doubt it will have anything ot do with him.

But Big Hit was produced by him and that immoral piece of crap had nothing to do with him.

    This looks AWESOME!

    by necron99

Hey Harry, is this the same one that you were talking about a few months ago where a Marine stomps Buzz Lightyear and an Ant? Then mad aliens come out from a hole in the sky and start making minced meat out of the humans like Starship Troopers! I hope so because I've been waiting for a hardcore fully CGI movie to come out. Any idea on a release date. I'm drooling already. I still can't wait for Antz and A Bug's Life!

    Blue Planet=Blue Shit

    by danno

No way. This film is another mo-caped piece of crap that is going to set animation back to the Bakshi days. The "marine stomping the bug" was some of the worst animation I've ever seen. The whole film looks like a bad video-game cut scene. Someone should yank Rainbow's Max 2 license before this total piece of shit lands in theaters killing any chance for more _real_ animated films like Antz or Bug's Life.

    The teaser/demo thing

    by bryan

The teaser with the guy stepping on an ant and a fake Buzz is available if you follow Harry's link in the story. I just watched it and I agree with the people who say it is juvenile and badly animated. I'm sure this is an early demo and the actual movie would look better, but I can't understand why anyone would get excited yet - the joke is embarassingly lame (yeah, Bambi Meets Godzilla was funny a long time ago - now come up with your own joke) and the animation, despite a few good shots, is just like a video game demo.
What's most annoying about the teaser is that it acts like Toy Story is mindless kiddy fluff ala Barney. Actually, Toy Story is a flawless piece of storytelling, and I will be surprised if this generic space war movie ends up having the same level of sophistication in its characterization and storytelling. Even if it's filled with gaudily colored blood, fiery explosions, even naughty words and gigantic boobies. The weird thing is, Toy Story is such a widely seen and acclaimed movie, that expecting the audience to accept that premise is a huge insult to their intelligence. It's like, "Remember that silly Star Wars bullshit? Fuck that! Here's sci-fi for adults! With humping and everything!"
But yeah, I'd go see it just in case. You never know.

    I don't know what you're talking about...

    by mr. pink

Despite the juvenile beginning, this trailer blew my mind. I think it looks to be full of great action and animation. Although I don't have a playstation, I've played various games on my friends' and the coolest part of that system is the cool intro scenes. Now, there's a movie that's like a really good intro to a playstation movie. What could go wrong? (But then again, I am a MALE TEENAGER, so it looks like it's targeted to my bracket.)

your all a bunch of fucking amateurs

    by animator

i dont even think that any of you have any semblance of what good animation is....granted the animation in the begining wasnt the most spectacular ever but it as good and as mentioned above this is just a teaser to get people interested in the movie... the actual teaser shots for the movie though looked spectacular and these arent even done either.... some of you need to get a clue before you start talking shit above things you dont know anything about.......like animation if you had a clue what animation was you wouldnt be talking mad smack...... also john woo has been signed on ... you can check it out in this months issue of 3d animation magazine.....

    peace out

Let's all calm down just a bit...

    by fig

Animator has a good (tho kinda crude) point, that this is just a trailer, and the character part of the intro isn't even from the film, no telling who even animated it (i.e. maight not be the character animators on the film). Granted, the mo-cap stuff does scare me, but the space/underwater scenes look nice, very complex and well-composited. It's WAY too early to be bashing the film for anything, it looks like it has some potential, let's wait and see.

Oh, and Danno, if you know enough to complain about mo-cap and Bashiki I would think you could look at the screen and know it was LightWave, not Max 2. And if that's the worst animation you've ever seen, man, I've seen some demo reels you need to look at...

    Rainbow Studios info...

    by frixion

Rainbow Studios is a game developer published by Microsoft.

    www.rainbo.com

Most resent game, Motocross Madness, Blue Planet seems to have grown out of one of their pevious games, Deadly Tide, I was reminded of a avi of DT I saw on a MS sample CD and Blue Planet looks just like it. It looks as if they thought they had a good little story/background laid out and that a movie was possible. Now seeing the trailer i was underwhelmed, it looked a lot like a video game, as it should seeing as most of those shots were probably done for the game. Now there seems to be about 1 1/2 yrs till this is to be released so I do hope they can compete with Pixar and PDI on quality and not fall back on the violence and gore factor. Remember effects should along with everything else in a movie serve the story, not the reverse.

P.S. They mention the use of both 3DS Max and Lightwave, what ever tool gets the job done.

Bakshi is cool in my book

    by necron99

This may make me a moron but I loved American Pop and Fire and Ice. They both had great stories and were handled brilliantly. I thought Wizards and his other features were pretty funny and I liked them too. Don't get me wrong I don't think their the best animated movies ever but I like the change from the norm even if it is just some immature perverted humor. Ralph Bakshi is cool in my book.

    John Woo

    by jones

I always thought that Woo's strong point was his directional pacing and camera work in the action gene. His use of slow motion, closeup, camera angle, action is what makes me return to his films.
How he applies this to CG animation will be interesting. That is, if he is in fact taking the job of producing Blue Planet?

    Aimed at Teenagers...duh

    by joey nunez

I, as a male teenager, is totally psyched by this trailer. Now, I won't lie...I LOVED Toy Story, and can't wait for ANTZ or a Bug's Life, but I have watched the trailer about a dozen times and it still makes me laugh. I have been waiting for a movie like this ever since the first previews of Toy Story...And just so you know, there was a South Park reference in there when the fake buzz was killed...And I don't care what you say about the TV-MA ratings, a lot of South Park's audience are teenagers, and believe it or not, some of them are male. We know who this movie is aimed at, and it sure as fuck has got my seven bucks.

    Um, jew boy...

    by fig

Dude, look at the pictures. They may be using Max2 and Soft for some things, but that's LightWave on those screens in most of the 3D Design pics...
