Updated Again! ROTS footage' Not Quite! Troopers Blasting Stuff on Tree Planet!

Published at:  Aug 15, 2004 11:19:07 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Remember our spy PitDoc from last year around this time... he picked up images and video from HELLBOY that kicked unholy ass. Well this time... it's something that LOOKS like it is from STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH or some promotional thing associated with it. Looks like footage from Attack of the Clones flopped and with new backgrounds, but it was being exhibited at a Licensing type of show. Well, let's see if you know what it is. Here ya go boys and girls... Fetch...

STAR WARS EPISODE 3: ROTS!!!!

Just found out this is footage from STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT! PitDoc didn't know that, and neither did I, but now we all do. It's still cool stuff!

Ok - it isn't STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT... but it also isn't Episode 3 stuff either. Apparently - we're going to be getting an Official Article about it sometime this week... allegedly. Hmmm... What is it?

    by havokjd

It has to be. Besides, it looks like old Thunderbirds special effects. I would assume the quality would be a little better on the film. In fact, the more I think about it, the video game probably has better quality. If not from the upcoming games, then a total piece of fakery.

I'll probably change my mind, but as of right now I genuinely believe I won't bother seeing this at the cinema. The whole Star Wars experience has been completely soured for me by the utter crapulence of the last two movies, and by the fact that every time I see that asswipe George Lucas I want to use his set of chins as a speed-bag. I read an interview with him a while back where, I kid you not, he complained about how tired he was after shooting Episode II because "I worked five days a week from eight in the morning til five in the afternoon...and we're not talking about a couple of weeks, this was constant over an eight month period." Really, you fat lazy prick? Most of us do that for about forty fucking years of our lives. I look forward to this becoming a thread where a bunch of shrill, incoherent SW fanboys post their lengthy apologias for the prequel trilogy, most of which will hinge on the deplorable idea that we'd all enjoy the movies if only we could stop expecting them to be any good.

It's SO incredibly BAD looking that it simply MUST be from the film itself. (That said it does look like a videogame). But at this point who even give a shit anymore? I don't like to knock things before they come out but GL The Hutt has struck out more than enough times for me to say that this will indeed suck, but ehh... that seems to be the recurring theme in the PT films. Plus the 2004 New Original Trilogy aka the N.O.T looks like a hat-ful of smashed arseholes. Steer clear if you can. Hold out for the unmolested ORIGINALS to be released officially. Til then bootleg bootleg bootleg. Teach that Plaid-clad SOB a lesson.

    CGI Troopers

    by odysseus

If this footage is real (and while it's probably not, it's likely not far off from what we'll be seeing in ROTS) it makes me wonder: would it really be that hard for Lucas to spring for some actual clone trooper costumes and film real actors running around on location? I don't care how good ILM's CGI is, it doesn't compare to the real thing -- and never will.

What a good TB this is. That line alone just gave me more pleasure than I'd expect from the sixth, oops, excuse me, the third star wars movie, were I actually to see it, which I won't. In other news, I think it's funny for an American to chastise someone for gloating and "unsportsmanlike conduct" seeing as that's pretty much the USA athletic hallmark, to say nothing of politics... and I'm an American BTW.

I don't quite get you. Real actors running around on location? Well, the actors ARE real - they've just been motion-captured. Location? That's generally CG on these two and it makes a lot more sense to just render them so lighting teams don't have to go to extra lengths to get the lighting. Surely plastic armour is the best candidate to do that way?! Oh wait. I do get it after all. You're just on the Cg-bashing bandwagon like everyone else. Doesn't compare to the real thing eh? Yeah, I've been to the real Geonosis too. And I've met the real Yoda on Dagobah, and he's all rubbery with no lip-sync! The animatronic/sock puppet is MUCH better. Don't confuse bad direction and flat cinematography for crap cg._______________________________Besides which - all you fools out there aren't even looking. You've all seen that the troopers have changed in Ep.3 and have stormtrooper eyes and no pointy crests anymore amongst other changes. Remember??

I know you think you're very clever indeed, but I thought I was pretty clear in my original post that it's distinctly possible I'll change my mind before the movie comes out but that as of right now I'm thinking I won't bother seeing it. Is it that hard to grasp, fanboy, that I *probably* won't be in line swinging a light saber and doing wookie impressions with all the other saps who are willing to line Lucas' pocket to watch Hayden Christensen fail to act his way out of a wet paper bag but that I reserve the right to change my mind and not feel that I have to excuse myself to smartarses like you? Do I need to repeat myself one more time or do you understand now? I'm not bagging SW to be 'cool', particularly given that I'm fully aware that even bothering to express an opinion about it is hopelessly uncool, positive or negative. But let me assure you my dislike of TPM and AOTC has nothing to do with trying to be hip and everything to do with how fucking abominable they were. Why, then, am I bothering to post all this self-justifying claptrap, I hear you gearing up to ask? Simple - it's 1:40am, I've got nothing better to do, I'm a bitter, cynical insomniac bastard, I've just watched Lost in Translation and I'm pining away for Scarlett Johansen. Oh, one more thing - big ups to the guy who called me a "hater" then proceeded to use virtually the exact argument I lampooned in my first post. Now *that's* fucking funny, Finchy. Finally, cheers Conan. Sorry about that monitor.

    RE: Half Vader & CGI

    by odysseus

Obviously you don't "get" me, Half Vader, because you're so busy jumping to conclusions about my take on the footage Harry posted, that you didn't even try to undestand what I was getting at. I most certainly am not on the CGI bashing bandwagon -- I was specifically talking about the clone troopers. I don't care if there were actors that were motion captured at some early stage of the process -- it's not the same as having a real actor in costume reacting to real outdoor terrain on location. And as far as plastic armor goes, it IS a better candidate than CG meticuolously rendered to look like... plastic armor. My point is in some situations, practical props, costumes, and (especially) actors simply read as being more real, and therefore more believable. Honestly, what comes across as more tangible -- the stormtroopers in the original trilogy, or the CG ones in AOTC?

    by devil0509

Lucas put out two great movies, then three very mediocre ones, in this series. ROTJ was the ugly duckling of the original trilogy, but is a far better movie than either TPM or AOTC. The chances of this one actually being a good movie are low. The chances of it being a movie that kindles the imagination and excitement the way Star Wars and Empire did are nil.

I was probably the biggest Original Trilogy fan out there and my hundreds of toys, books, games, VHS versions, soundtracks, and everything else Star Wars was proof to that. I lived and breathed Star Wars. I would surprise collectors when I could tell the difference between IG88 and EV9D9. Even though I still love the non-Special Edition versions of the OT (I found my ltbx VHS versions....YAY!), I am in total despair at what Lucas has done to SW nowadays. Everything Lucas has done with the new prequel and the old prequel with the SEs has been nothing but SHIT. Look what Lucas has even done with his old THX1138. He has lost his mind and tarnished the great image of what SW use to mean. I really can't put it into words (and I am usually not bad at putting things into words) how much anger and grief I feel over what has happened. I guess I need to sit down and write a 20 page report on my feelings. If that makes me a SW fanboy, by god that's fucking fine as long as you make it an OT Fanboy, ok?

Hi. I dont post much, but I had a minute and figured Id lob a wad of jism into this gang bang.
Warts and all I mainly dig on the new trilogy and will be there with fuckin BELLS ON come may.
I LOVE STAR WARS, i was right at the age when I saw it that it fuckin INTRODUCED ME (along with Infra Man, oddly enough) to my imagination. And my imagination has made me a pretty happy twat. When the prequels came out I sat with all the rest of you and HATED FUCKING JAR JAR BINKS. I didnt dislike the gungan race, just JAR JAR BINKS...do we have a racial slur for them yet, cuz if so jar jar IS one. There were a couple of other things, too...the fact is a droid army should communicate over an internal network, and not say fucking ROGER ROGER. I was an 11 bonehead for 4 years and I never heard ONE SOLDIER SAY THAT, CUZ ITS GAY. The kid was shitty,it was badly timed out. They shoulda been on tatooine for 20 minutes in the film. But aside from that, I DUG Qui Gon Jinn, and his relationship with Obi Wan,His motivations for doing what he was doing and the performance by LN. I see ep 1 mostly as his story, or more to the point the story of this jedi master and apprentice team as it encountered and dealt with the jedi prophecy. Darth Maul was a fucking BADASS villain, haters can suck it. The emporer\sidious deal is fucking great! Sidious in the shadows sending out a fuckin pitbull to deal with his junk. while he stirs up guff in the senate "making things legal." Its not about Naboo , its about policies. And Then of course the lightsaber fight at the end is the greatest thing ever. Darth maul Shouldnta died, but whatever.
Ep 2 replaced bullshit Jar Jar with bullshit tender moments, and he kinda lost me there. I almost woulda preferred jar jar. HOWEVER...hayden is a little bitch in the great tradition of skywalker little bitches. Mark Hamill as Luke WAS A LITTLE WHINING BITCH. "But I was gonna go to tashi station and ..." whiney ass BITCH. So I think Hayden was spot on. I also think hes gonna be spot on as gettingtwistedintodarth vader - anakin. I just have that feeling. Mace was Badass, Yoda was badass, the way GL did the clones and boba fett was not at all what Id hoped for or expected, but I dig it. and I thought the cg yoda was an improvement. I think the intrusiveness of CG is no more intrusive than the look of bad sets. 6 of one two in your bush, ha ha. AOTC was much better in tone and pacing and the clone wars started and they fucking rocked! Ep 2 was better than jedi any fuckin day.
So I gotta say - while most of the haters complaints have their objective validity and also have a good deal of subjective validity as well, I think if you just lighten up and check out what I think GL's intention is with these films and give yourself over to the story, you'll see that actually Ep 3 is gonna be the greatest thing since they took down the fast times harry animation.

And if not, stay at home bitches. REALLY. Transmit your message of disapproval with your WALLET. Thats what GL understands, after all. And thats cool, because again, some of the complaints are legit.
I wont miss having fewer cattle breathing up the air when ep 3 gets going.

FAKE: NON-ILM COPY ANIMATION FROM SIGGRAPH

    by onlyforyou

THIS IS NON-ILM NON-ROTS FOOTAGE. IT IS A POOR GRAPHIC TEST FROM A COMPANY THAT WANTED TO SHOW OFF THEIR SOFTWARE AT SIGGRAPH LAST WEEK!

Friends... I saw this at siggraph. It was playing on a monitor of a graphic software developer. It was created by the developer, and wasn't high res (which isn't as clear on this video as it was on the monitor.)

This company had produced this clip to show off what their software could do. If you notice how stupidly the troopers jump off of the transport you'll notice how amaturish this clip really is.

This is a huge farce... that it is true footage from Revenge of the Sith IS CRAP.

Really... it looks BAD... Lucas and copy wouldn't produce something as cheap and ugly as this, and it looked worse on the monitor.

Remember that all of the clone troopers in episode 2 were CGI...
to me this seems like some test footage (probably to be included on the OT DVD release) probably made by ILM to prove to Lucas that a full-scale CGI troop battle would look convincing....and that there was no need to make any costumes.

Episode 3 - why does anyone care anymore?

    by bubcus

I looked at the footage and felt bored with it. The music trying to be all energetic and I can't help compare this new drivel with the old classics where each scene was a masterpiece with the music... like when the rebel fleet is heading for the second death star and getting into formation. Binary Sunsets, the Tie Fighter Attack... all sorts of brilliant pieces and then I sit there and am bored with TPM and most of the AOTC soundtrack. Thankfully the AOTC love theme was good because I'm losing hope fast. Well, maybe my tune will change when I see a trailer next spring for RotS. I can't believe I am still so addicted to the Star Wars franchise... I am still buying stormtrooper action figures on ebay. Look at me! the 30 year old Star Wars nerd. Ahhhhhh!
Well, just had to rant. I hope RotS will be good, I really do.
