An early look at HENRY & ME

Here's a bit about Melanie "BODY DOUBLE" Griffith's upcoming tv show...

I was down in Orlando last week with my girlfriend, and we got tapped to
screen an upcoming CBS sitcom. I think we were at MGM/Disney (though it
may have been Universal). Anyway it's called "Henry & Me" and its
starring Melanie Griffith with Jeffrey Tambor, someone named Veanne Gil
(sp?) and Betty White (listed as a guest star, in a role which would
probably be semi-regular).

The show focuses on Griffith as a single mom with a hectic job working
for a publicist (Tambor) who's seen better days professionally and isn't
taking his backward slide too well. Griffith, as a matter of fact seems
to be the main factor keeping that slide from accelerating.

The pilot which we saw shows us the end of Griffith's pregnancy and the
birth of Henry. We are introduced to her best friend (the "slutty best
friend") her boss (manipulative, dependent on Griffith) her boss's
assistant (hapless, inept, goofy guy) Henry's pediatrician (love
interest) and her mother (clingy, smothering, but well-meaning). You
probably recognize some formulas going on here from those descriptions.

My girlfriend and I had a split decision on it. We both criticised the
same elements: a couple of sloppily written jokes, how many times are we
going to see the slutty best friend in different shows?, Melanie's
character was written a bit weak, whiny, and too eager to please. She
largely wrote off the show, but I saw that the negative elements were not
irredeemable. I actually think the show has a great deal of potential,
if they can write the characters away from the cardboard cutouts they are
in danger of flattening into. (And I told them so: "Avoid formula!")
However they could get lazy and let things get into a rut in a hurry.

I'll give this one a shot for a few weeks and see where they go with it.
