COMIC CON: Dig Dug on RETURN OF THE KING Extended Edition!

Published at:  Jul 24, 2004 2:31:58 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with Dig Dug's report upon the Extended Edition, which looks to be extended by 50 minutes... which bums me out cuz I was kinda pulling for an extra 285 minutes... but then... I'm a greedy bitch. Here ya go...

Here's what I can remember from the LotR: RotK Extended Edition segment from Comic-Con:

First, no Peter Jackson (I know, not a surprise, but I was hoping). We had some lady hosting the panel, DVD producer (sorry, don't know the name), Producer Rick Porras, and actors Billy Boyd (Pippen) and David Wenham (Faramir). They showed a bit more than I thought: a four minute 'preview,' and then three short scenes.

From the preview I recognized (forgive me if names are a little off; It's been awhile since I've read the books):

*stuff from House of the Healing

* stuff from Gandalf vs. Saruman (Gandal confronts him to get info, and a fight breaks out: at least, Saruman shoots fire from atop the fallen 'tower')

* a flashback or something of Faramir, Boromir, and Denathor that explains (I think) all of that friction (how Denathor wants Boromir to get the ring for himself).

* a face-off between Gandolf and the Witch King

* extra battle stuff, and extra scenes of Sam and Frodo in disguise as Orcs

* Aragorn using the 'eye' to deceive Sauromon

I can't remember what else was in the trailer, but very cool stuff

For the scenes they showed:

1. A scene with Faramir courting Eowyn at the House of the Healing

2. A scene with Faramir and Pippin talking after Pippin changes into the 'knight' outfit. Faramir tells him that the outfit belonged to a boy who dreamed of fighting dragons instead of studying, unlike his brother. Pippin says "it was yours" and Faramir talks about Denathor's greater love of Boromir. Pippin then says something about how Denathor will love and appreciate his wisdom or something in time. It was a nice scene

3. Peter Jackson (via video; he was in pre-production for King Kong. It was funny, as he seemed genuinely bummed to miss Comic-Con...again... and said one of these days he'd make it out) introduced a scene that was added 'for fun.' It was an extended cut of Aragorn recruiting the Army of the Dead. After he offers them eternal rest for paying off the debt, the Dead back off, and disappear and tens of thousands of skulls poor out of the mountains in the cavern. Cool stuff.

The box will be blue. Here's the cool part:

There are FIFTY extra minutes. I know; my jaw hit the floor too when I heard that! I guess there were 300 FX shots to finish, and in March after Return of the Kings had racked up the Oscars, Peter Jackson wanted to shoot one more scene (a close up of the skulls from the above Army of the Dead scene). So the last shot filmed was done in March.

Anyway, that's the scoop. Cool stuff; too bad we have to wait until December, but I guess this'll make great Christmas gifts (as if anyone can wait that long to watch these discs).

    It's sad...

    by gboybama

Kinda sad that very soon we'll be having a Christmas with no new LOTR presents to buy or pine for. We'll not see the like of these movies ever again. We have lived in interesting times, my fellow geeks.

    Someday, it'll return to us...

    by zephyr1988

Perhaps the experience can return if, or should I say when, the Hobbit is made, then maybe we can learn of those times yet again. But that won't be till at least December 2007. Still, if I'm going to get one DVD this year, it's this one.

    What about the Polystone gift?

    by rowanm

What kind of treat has Weta got in store for us? Personally, I'd love to see a miniature of Barad Dur. It was John Howe's drawing that really hooked my imagination into how Middle Earth could look . Yet again I want to praise Peter Jackson for bringing him on board. If it turns out to be something else, I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

TheOneRing.net posted pics of the polystone busts: I think there are two = one of Minas Tirith, and one of Minas Morgul...

Check out theonering.net/scrapbook/group/1456/ for more info on the gift set. Apparently the gift set contains Minas Tirith and a coupon to send away for Minas Morgul (that is if I understand what was posted correctly). Sounds cool EXCEPT for having to wait for December.

    The Colombian

    by treadhead

Sorry, brother, but Peter J. never filmed the Scouring of the Shire, which is what I assume you are referring to (he felt it would have been anticlimatic). Instead, Saruman and Grima have, shall we say, a falling out at Orthanc (the one real mistake I can attribute to PJ in ROTK is leaving this scene out-- just my opinion). But the extended footage that is there sounds like it will be great. Harry, any chance of getting a link to the preview they showed at Comic Con? You know people-- you can make it happen.

    I want one more scene

    by dannychico

Aragorn vs. Mouth of Sauron. I'm pretty sure it was filmed because in ROTK theatrical the heroes ride to the Black Gate before it opens and then wait there for a second. But there is a continuity error because all of a sudden we see Aragorn finish mounting his horse (it's subtle, look for it), indicating that he dismounted at some point, probably to behead the evil Mouth of Sauron. Also I bought this movie tie-in book that was about weapons, warfare, and characters in LOTR and there was a whole section on the Mouth of Sauron including photographs of his helmet and a summary of Aragorn vanquishing him. So I'm pretty sure this scene was shot and will be added back in. Essentially, we were robbed of 3 huge showdowns in ROTK theatrical: Gandalf vs. Saruman, Gandalf vs. Witch King, and Aragorn vs. Mouth of Sauron.

    Also

    by dannychico

Gandalf's staff is broken in his fight with the Witch King. This makes the Witch King's earlier line, "I will break him," significant and foreboding. You will notice that from Gandalf's ride with Pippin into the funeral pyre until the end of the movie he does not have a staff. It's easy to notice in the burning scene because Gandalf charges in on the horse and has to grab one of the soldier's spears to clear the way. If he had his staff still, he could have used that. So the Gandalf/Witch King faceoff will happen right before Denethor's demise, probably while Gandalf rides with Pippin to the top of Minas Tirith.

Of course these experiences will happen again...

    by shepdog

If Hollywood does nothing else, it's remake the fuck out of everything. In another 20 years or so, somebody will get a boner to remake these films. The producers and director will justify them to fans by stating that the Jackson films strayed too far from J.R.R.'s source material (this will be truer to the novels) and that the EFX will be better. Hollywood dinks will be behind it because they know fandom will swollow any excuse to see this type of fare (again and again). For instance, I don't recall public demand for a remake of The Bishop's Wife, Day of the Jackel, Dangerous Liaisons, Death Takes a Holiday, King Kong, The Manchurian Candidate, etc. But Hollywood churned them out any way, and they were enjoyed by many (not me, of course). So, don't fret, geeks, this "cinematic experience" will most surely happen again. Certainly, the last two entries in the Matrix triology deserve to be re-written and reshot by somebody who is less worried about his new vagina than the script. Count on a new and younger Indiana Jones being cast and the franchise continuing. Same with Star Wars. These things are too profitable for Hollywood to let go of them. They will continue to recyle them

Let me rephrase. A cinematic moment like this will never again happen for me.
Man, don't let Hollywood make you so cynical. These people dress up and play make believe for a living, for cryin out loud.

    I want the Shire fight

    by human worm baby

That was the most important part in the damn book. The reason the hobbits were in the book is to see them grow into warriors and objects of respect in the shire. Just because PJ never liked that part, doesn't mean he did not have to not shot it. It was integral and important. And yet it won best editing. Bullshit. I hope the DVD ROTK EE is better than the cinematic version.

    About this additional footage.....

    by sardonicnarcotic

I read somewhere that it is just fifty minutes of addditional endings. PJ felt that the original half hour of endings weren't enough.I guess the original endings tested through the roof and the felt they should add more. But on a serious note I want the version that is fifty minutes shorter.

at a DGA or WGA screening (don't ask me to remember which) PJ promised the extended edition would also include a drinking contest between the elf and the dwarf. just the idea of it cracks me up, and i am dying to see if that scene made it.

The last time we have a new LOTR to look forward to. Scary. But it's been great to have been here - savour the moment. Not just LOTR, but X2, Spidey 2... All we can do after November is hope and wish for The Hobbit...

I'm pretty sure that the Mouth of Sauron, played by Bruce Spence, will be in the extended edition. I'm definitley sure that his scenes were filmed. How many fanboy film sagas is he going to end up being in anyway?

i think the 2nd and 3rd films were excruciatingly boring. everyone in the media was all over how good rotk was. but none of my friends thought it was that great. many thought it was tedious and over-wrought. i really wish more pople would use their own minds and not be scared of expressing their disappointment. the constant fawning over these films is just depressing.

  • They showed both of these scenese in the EE trailer at comicon! I was there.. When the witch king pulled out his sword and the fellbeast reeled back and spread its wings out i swear I got the biggest fukin goosebumps!! It was amazing..
Also, Billy Boyd was pretty damn funny at the panel during the Q & A part.

    TTT and ROTK boring...?

    by drunken fugitive

To the guys that are saying TTT and ROTK are boring, if they were the movies would have only made what Matrix:Revolutions did at the Boxoffice(which was bomb, look at the figures), word of mouth would have killed both movies, open your eyes and realise that these movies will forever be known as one of the greatest trilogies ever... you guys probably though Bad Boy 2 or Pearl Harbour were exciting!!
