Drooooool!!!! Gorgeous Quicktime Scene and Trailer from SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW!

Published at:  Jul 15, 2004 12:53:27 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've only just gotten back from watching the new Sky Captain trailer in the best online format... and that ungodly beautiful Underwater Battle sequence featuring a well known cinematic ship... Killer!

I find myself repeatedly watching these... and smiling a toothy grin with childlike eyes above gleaming in awe at just how cool this movie looks. There's never been anything like this in modern cinema, and I'm just thrilled by what I'm seeing. Literally everytime something new pops up, I just get giddier and giddier... and a tad angry at that cur, Moriarty for having already seen it! OOOoooh that dastardly doer!

Here's the link for gleeful imagery and moments from SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW:

    by clitsmurf

... and then they said technicolor would be the end of movies - and whoah! Now CGI is signifying judgement day! Maybe if someone would be able to keep things in perspective for once, but NO - New things must be evil, when they're not part of bringing LOTR and other epic titles to life. CGI is just another tool, and if one film - ONE FILM FOR CRAP'S SAKE utilizes it, it doesn't translate to the corruption of all that is cinema!

This looks very cool, reminds me of Starman the comic.

I saw the trailer for it before "King Arthur"(hold your judgements for a second, I was invited to see that movie and didn't have to buy a ticket for it, I had no desire to see it) and everyone in the theater was blown away. It was really quite unfair to show what should be a damn good movie before people see a crappy one.

    CGI

    by chicken_planet

ClitSmurf, CGI is damn good tool, one of the most powerfull infact, but when we start seeing animated movies try to pass themselves off as live action, it fucking sucks. sound, technicolour, and cgi are all advancements in cinema, but what all bluescreen movies really do is dillute cinema to just a throwaway art form, i didn't like the trailer, so what right?? for all i know the movie could be beyond kickass. But the direction movies are heading in is certainly something to think about, technology has helped movies advance, we can do anything now...but the way we do it will change so drastically, you won't need a camera to make a live action movie.

who thinks this movie looks like a huge steaming pile of CGI at it's WORST??!?!?!!? The same people crucifying Lucas for CGI are applauding this steaming shitball that is nothing BUT CGI. I mean, c'mon people, Jar-Jar looks MUCH more realistic than Jude-Jude! And until they can use computers to draw a GOOD preformance out of Gwenyth Paltrow, I ain't buyin' it! Everytime I see anything about this film the more I can taste the bile rising. It angers me in a way that Wing Commander could only begin to. Yes, I am comparing this to a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie. Hell, I'll sit through a Freddie Prinze Jr. Film Festival before I watch this celluloid still-birth!

    by aranel

There-s one BIG difference between PM and this... PM uses CGI to make realistic effects. In this movie they want to give us a whole new atmosphere. It's not supposed to look real! They're using CGI in another way. And I find it pretty damn cool! Now the story, actors, script will have to live up to my expectations...

    This Movie Looks Cool

    by doomfarer

Listen up, you screwball primates; NOWHERE did the people bringing this movie to us ever claim it to be 'live action'. From day one, they came out and said this is what we want to bring to the barbeque. And guys, that's exactly what they delivered. CGI is a tool, good or bad. I think this movie is well on the way to delivering the goods, and I'm looking forward to it. The deco backgrounds, and the blending of the old time serials and science fiction and the COOLEST golden age cartoonist (Max and Dave Fleischer's SUPERMAN series) looks very well conceived and carried out. Now some of you bozo's are screaming about zero plot, giant robots, blah blah 'effing blah; fine. You've had your say. Now shut your pieholes! If I want to hearing the babbling of village idiots, I'll go to a insane asylum. Too many bloggers here talkin' smack just to hear themselves sound stupid. To the rest of the civilized and polite society, my apoligies for saying what had to be said. Please, enjoy the movie with a clear conscience.

I don't understand how one can claim the movie has no story.

    by fluffyunbound

The plot elements that have been revealed so far indicate the existence of a story. There is a hero, a villain, and a series of adventures. Sounds like a story to me. The reviews I've seen that focused on story seemed to primarily complain about the absence of backstory, which only indicates that they fail to accept the conventions of the genre being glorified here. The fact that the existence of Jude Law's secret base is never explained amuses me, because I hear that and I say, "Of course the hero has a secret base." I don't stop and say, "Where does this base get its electric power? Who delivers the heating oil? How many bathrooms does it have?" because that would be stupid. It would be like watching the Flintstones episode where Fred becomes a secret agent and wondering about the physics of the giant swinging stone axe that almost cuts him in half. It would be like watching a James Bond flick and trying to figure out what that big Lurch guy does on his day off - if he goes to movies, has a pet, etc.

  • From the first trailer I saw I was excited. It appeals to my geek nature. I don't know why people are so against the CGI? If that technology was not available this movie could still have been made using miniatures and camera tricks. Maybe that's what I like about the look of this movie. It looks like an old ('30s, '40s) style Hollywood adventure film but made with today's technology. I know this movie won't appeal to everyone but I know I'll see it.

    by drath

Sure, some of us TBers are just armpit fuckwits trying to sound cool by complaining. However, you have to admit, the movie does have that Phantom Menace manufactured look. Not saying that'll ruin the movie. Alfred Hitchcock usually filmed in artificial environments, and in many ways that's part of the charm of his movies. The very artificiality of them works. So maybe this movie will too. Or maybe it'll feel like a Playstation game starring A-list actors. It's a crap shoot, don't be surprised if some people here want to curb their enthusiasm. Okay, they don't need to announce it to the world, but you know anyone who talks back here is in love with his/her own voice anyway. I know I am. Can I hear a HELL YEAH? Right? Hello?

Well from the synopsis i've read it sounds like a globe trotting, cliff hanging, 1930's serial style movie. So to some of that constitutes no plot. If so, how many of you feel the same about Raiders of the Lost Ark??

Both stories, although not the exactly the same, have the same pulp roots. SO before you go attacking it for no story, I suggest you read the novelization and watch RotLA again before shooting your fucking shitholes called mouths off EVER AGAIN!!!!

FluffyUnbound -- Exactly. Nobody is impressed by obnoxious talkbackers picking nits with the story/backstory, science or believability in a film like this. It's all a scramble to score easy intellectual points from an exceedingly undemanding subject. It's all very safe and harmless, but they have this idea that it projects a light on them which lends an air of being incisive and clever. Gadfly Lite......... Hooters_Girl -- Once again you show yourself to be the auto-negatoid you always are in these genre film talkbacks. Maybe you'd score more points from an adoring crowd if you at least pretended to have a reason why you think this movie is so beneath your exaltedness. There's still enough of a kid in me to get excited about giant, clunky robots on the rampage, underwater WWII-era fighters (!), sinister planes with flapping wings, secret bases, derring-do and Angelina in Plissken mode. Oh Yeah, I noticed the Max and Dave Fleischer influences from their "Superman" cartoons. I thought that that was one of the reasons that would help make this movie work. As for the smack talking residents of Loserville, they're just mutts barking to hear themselves bark, with the mental capabilities of a small empty soapdish. I look to this film as FUN! It may not make the Academy Awards, but it looks like a cool way to kill a couple of hours. The new trailer and underwater battle scenes look very cool and stylish. • Since Clive Owen seems to be the universal choice to replace Brosnan after his next and last Bond movie, wouldn't it be a great idea to go back to the original novels and re-adapt them, actually putting the plots and dialog form the books in the movies in which they belong rather than the hodge podge of material from different books we've had for lo these many years? And just to tie this into Sky Captain, why not have them take place in the 60's? Owen looks like he could pull of the proper vicious thug/chauvinist asshole aspect of bond that has been missing ever since Dalton sissified him in the 80's. That would be the best way for the studio to have their revenge on the Austin Powers movies by actually making a period-set version that kicks ass. Somebody get me a job at MGM!

But I actually found myself liking "Down With Love" so maybe I'm just too fascinated by attempts to archly explore retro filmmaking styles. But if we are going to make a 60's style spy film, forget Bond. Make a 60's style spy film about a SOVIET spy who saves the world from an evil BRITISH/AMERICAN/FRENCH plot. Give him Krushchev-era technology to do it with. That would be a scream. Probably do good box overseas, too. Can Pitt do a Russian accent?

I feel sorry for all of the so-called "movie fans" that do nothing but bitch about every film that comes out. If the SCatWoT trailer doesn't get you excited to see the movie, then shut your holes and let those of us who appreciate this film's bold originality revel in the pre-release hype. We're lucky to be living in an era where these types of movies are being made and taken seriously by the filmmakers (most of the time). But you cynical fuckwads have to shoot everything down no matter how incredible it looks. One numbnuts actually stooped to the level of making fun of the villain's name because it wasn't a real German name, all the while accepting UN-realistic elements such as giant robots and planes with flapping wings! I could only laugh and shake my head at these pathetic attempts to rip this movie apart. I for one applaud the obvious time, effort, love and talent that seems to have been put into this project -- it looks like it has paid off. And to those of you who bash Harry and how he gets excited over movies like this -- well, true movie fans get excited about innovative movies instead of nitpicking them to death and condemning them to obscurity without having even seen them. Pathetic. Now would be the time that you go upstairs to complain to mommy that a bad man on the internet made you cry...

Cloud, you said "so far, no reviewers has any praise for the story in skycaptain" and that's false. In previous backtalks I *quoted* reviewers who have praised the story, and you refused to accept thier words as praise for the story. And I've seen LAPUTA. I think Sky Captain will be much better. As for the hater hater haters, I've done much much more than watch one trailer, so when I don't like what you say, I have a lot more behind it. I've seen the teaser trailer, two different versions of the second trailer, a clip, and over a hundred promo pics, I've also read the novelization, dozens of articles about the film, and dozens of postings in various forums by people who are involved in the making of this film. Everything I've encountered makes me think this movie is going to RAWK! Now get your heads out of your butts.

Hooters_Girl -- You still sound like a vapid trendy disser. Yes, this is a message board. No, nobody said don't post any more. However, calling us idiots when the boiled-down essence of your dismissal of the trailer (and the as yet unreleased film) was "this is gonna suck cuz it sucks!" is pretty damn ironic. It's obvious that you can string a coherent sentence together when you want to, but when those words shed no light on why you hate something, it amounts to no more than vacuous and fashionable bleating on your part. As usual.

Well nothing can be better than Laputa, but

    by drath

oh wait, you mean the movie, not la puta? Shit, my bad. No I love that movie too, it's one of my favorite Miyazaki movies, but comparing it to Sky Captain seems like apples and oranges to me. The tone of that movie and the Sky Captain trailers just don't invite comparison. However, I'm surprised by so many people getting worked up about naysayers for an FX heavy action movie. Are you all new to AICN and moviegoing in general or what? This has been the Standard Operating Bull since I started coming here in 97!

I think Hooters_Girl is secretly Susan Sontag.

    by fluffyunbound

No. Really. Wait until she tells us why she hates this film. You'll see I'm right.

    cloudrider` It's a deal!

    by eti

"but tell you what. if this movie comes out, and i see it and i like it, i'll be right alongside you singing its praises. ok?"

Works for me. And if it stinks, man will I be mad! winstonrifles: Not overbudget from what I hear, and the over deadline part is debatable. Nosferatu Jones: How about RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? And the original STAR WARS was also very much in the spirit of the old serials. And Angelina is only in it for 15 minutes, despite how they are promoting her role.

    by rcamacho2278

complainer, bickerer, anal tight ass. You can't get off YOUR OWN high horse and accept a film for what it is?? instead you blurt out your opinion like most people on these talkbacks spitting out any negativity you can. Why you would want to comment on a movie you do not have any interest in is beyond me. It would be like me making comments on the Passion of christ if I was an athiest. Hence my opinion would mean SHIT because im being negative about something I shouldn't even care enough to voice my opinion about.
so, once again, try your buzz killing propaganda somewhere else

the story orginal? the robots look like they are from an old superman Fleischer cartoon. Im pretty damn sure that those are ripoffs of the "Mechanical Monsters" design. They fly, go in groups, and cause major destruction...hmmm...add jude law as a pilot flying around in a sterile retro-tech city, and u have this movie.

Gee... that movie is pure gay insanity!!!

    by robofag

Planes flying under the sea? Giant robot furnaces underwater? Titanic being broke down and used as an obstcle for heroes??? ***Sighs*** Well at least this scene nails it where the incredibly boring underwater scene in TPM horribly failed...

    Jolie = Distractingly ugly

    by kaitain

Am I some kind of freak for thinking that Angelina Jolie is a fairly unattractive woman?

I like the visual style of the film, but the underwater sequence didn't grip me at all. There was no sense of weight or dynamism to the action. I see these vehicles flying around, but I don't *feel* them. Nothing makes me want to duck, brace myself, take a sharp intake of breath.

    Ceristagg...

    by robofag

No you're not a freak to think that. She's not a beautiful women indeed, with her deformed lips and eyes of a heroin addict. The reason why so much guys are drooling at Angelina Jolie is because they were TOLD that she's attractive, and that she's sold by Hollywood as being a sex bomb. Perhaps she fits wit the (gruesome) tastes of many Hollywood directors and producers... so that's where the hype would come from.

    Flapping wings...

    by b.nyetheuruk-hai

I don't know if anybody has pointed this out already, but this new trailer appears to explain the flapping wings on the planes. If I remember correctly, when the first trailer debuted a few months ago, there was a quick scene showing a few of the giant robots shooting at a hole in the ground within the city. In this new trailer, it appears as though they've added in some of the flapping planes which are also firing in this hole. BUT -- the planes are hovering in a stationary position like a helicopter. So it looks like the flapping motion lets them behave like a helicopter. I don't know if this is really the reason for the flapping, but it kind of makes sense to me...

    by minderbinder

It's entirely possible that there's little substance to the movie...but how can any of us know if that's the case before we've seen it? Personally I think it looks awesome and I'm anticipating it more than just about anything else this year. To hooters_girl: shut up, you smelly cunt.

    Doesn't Look Like Anything Special

    by greenleaf1

It could be good, it could be bad, but I'm not gonna wait in line for a midnight showing for it if there is one. It just doesn't strike me as a really good-looking movie. I dunno maybe I'll be surprised, but I'm not expecting much outta this one.

    I'm interested.

    by general idea

Sure the trailer makes it look like "all visuals, no story" but first of all, a movie of this type doesn't need to be brilliant, just keep it moving, make sure the dialog doesn't ruin the movie, and wrap it up nicely. Comparing things to Raiders is sort of blasphemy, I don't expect it to match the fun of that movie, but on the other hand the people who are already comparing it to Phantom Menace... TPM sucked because of the story & dialogue & acting. Had nothing to do with the effects or CGI in my opinion.
