Wake me when it's in QuickTime, then I might actually be able to give a fuck. It plays in spurts at the moment. What I was able to see looked pretty good and it's always nice to see Kitano's impassive face winking at me. Fuck Windows Media.

Damn shame for all you guys that had a Windows Media Butchered version. Intresting trailer, odd looking movie. Was almost perfect until Bob Sapp turned up. And then very cool when we see what happens to him. Another case of "Entire movie in the trailer" but looks good enough to be excited about anyhows.
Ouch!!! I had to sop up the blood from my monitor! The stains! The stains!! A few thoughts: 1. Dribble me this, if the trailer is that long, just how long is the film?!! Heck, I was waiting for an intermission! 2. I certainly hope a storyline didn

Timetravelling samurais killing both right and left with Beat-Takeshi staring as if nothing happened and over the top gore with 9to5 workers being sliced with no mercy? This guy -Miike- is a genius, and a great filmmaker by the way (get the unrated Audition and you'll see).

All you get in grainy, slow 1 frame per minute picture quality and muffled sound! :( DivX AVI, Quicktime or MPEG2 is the way to go! :D

You have to see it to believe it. Is this coming out on DVD soon, or something. I had a little trouble reading the Japanese on the official website. Cool trailer, if you like to look into a 2 inch window.
July 5, 2004, 9:32 a.m. CST
but it was only two inches across

Sure looks like "Vic Romano" to me...

With a mouth like that. The only Miike film I'm really interested in is the one he plays straight: One Missed Call.

Here's the deal. The reason we english speakers think every japanese film that comes out is great, so long as it's scary or has sword fights or lots of gore or tentacle rape, is precisely because we DON'T know japanese. We don't know the language, the vocal inflections, anything. So how are we to tell if the actual acting in a given foreign film is any good? How are we supposed to know if the guy's giving a sincere performance? I remember when crouching tiger hidden dragon came out. The only thing everybody kept saying was, "wow, what great scenery." As opposed to, "wow, that subtitler really had a convincing role." That said, MAN this things looks great. Can't wait to see people split in half and stuff. And i'm sure all the acting/scenery will be top notch as well.
July 5, 2004, 10:29 a.m. CST
I do however see your point and I guess for the most part you could be right when it comes to the majority of people's first reactions to films of the 'other' variety. But the bad performaces in films like Ghost System and Returner are easily spotted by anyone who can recognise good performances in films like Dark Water or Juon. On a side note, is this the new order of talkbacks? Up instead of down or is it just on the usual randomiser?
July 5, 2004, 10:57 a.m. CST
I too thought that one guy kinda looked like Vic, so I did an IMDB search. Sure as hell is! Now I deffinatley have to see this movie...

Just watched the trailer from my apartment in Tokyo which has a 26mb DSL connection (in reality only about 13mb since I'm far from the switch-gimmick) and it played beautifully in full-screen (but had some flicker thing on the lower right corner). I prefer downloading quicktime trailers of course, but IZO does have a high quality stream, if you have the bandwidth (and video card) to play it. In case anyone didn't know, Bob Sapp is in A LOT of ads in Japan. The shot of the samurai hacking present day salary men looked like it was shot at or very near the Nomura Bldg in Shinjuku and you could actually see the Park Hyatt in the background, hotel used in Lost in Translation.

That WAS Vic Ramano from MXC!! Besides that, was anybody else completely confused by what the hell was going on? That looked like a bad acid trip.... I'll watch it just in hopes that all of that madness is explained.

Although their title is not an accurate translation (I believe it's something more like "crazy man of chaos or absurdity," Yes? Is it some kind of idiom?), that is one of the greatest titles of all time. "Undeniably insane Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) is apparently working on a movie titled Izo: The Crotch is an Incomprehensible Demon-Man. The synopsis: We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continum to present-day Tokyo, where his finds himself one with the city's homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword. His ability to leap through time, slashing as he goes, attracts the attention of the lords of the universe, who are like a pre-war House of Peers, in office for eternity. Izo, however, is not about to bow to anyone, even the lords of creation (he even rapes Mother Earth). In the final conflict, the prime minister (Beat Takeshi), calls in allies from all eras, from samurai swordsmen to the yakuza. It should be the most bloody and violent sword fight sequence ever staged."

this movie is gonna rock. and seeing that Takeshi "Beat" Kitano is in it is a plus. the new Zatoichi flik was absolutly beautiful, Kitano plyed the character to the nines. Katsu would be proud.

Windows Media Player sucks ass.... Lame Japanese Gore-Fests Suck Ass...freaky bottom-of-the-swimming pool childbirthing scenes suck ass... Mystical Japanese Cavemen Samurai suck ass by the metric ton.... And we all know that Jesus was a black man who was killed by the Romans (thanks Silent Bob), not a creepy Japanese dude who was stabbed by the Iron Chef, who, incidentally, Sucks Ass! ----- Did I forget anything?

A trailer is designed to be a reflection of the final film. After seeing this trailer, I feel confident that I understand the basic mood of this film. In every profession there is always a method of success achieved by taking the "easy way" out. Comedians that can't write intelligent and relational humor resort what's referred to as "shock-humor"; where nothing is genuinely funny, but the F-word elicits chuckles from the less sophisticated members of the audience. Writers and directors who are unable to inject anything innovative, original, or thoughtful into their work resort to substandard concepts that appeal to a low level of the human Psyche. They use a flashy gimmick to attract viewers, and a section of society inevitably plunks down their cash for a seat in the theater, only to trash talk the film later. There will always be a section of society that is attracted to shiny things that make noise, so I'm sure that films like that will always exist. But I always thought the crowd here at AICN was a little different. Most everyone in the talkbacks has bitched about film-makers that abandon a truly inspired story and replace it with CGI, flashy costumes, loud soundtracks, and unnecessarily quick pacing. The package was important, but the story was what mattered. The films most often cited as being our favorites are films that pushed the envelope and tested the limits of storytelling. They are not the ones that allowed a gimmick like special effects, violence, or a big name star to take priority over the story. Film is storytelling in a pretty package. But, when the package supersedes the content, you end up with something forgettable. Having said all of that, I have to say that I think this film looks like a flashy gimmick film, that caters to one of mankinds most primal and regrettable urges: blood-lust.

I've seen a lot of (but not enough)asian films & this is one I'm really looking forward to. Last good one I saw was Battle Field Baseball, which did have similarities to Shaolin Soccer in action and hilarity. I was hoping you guys could help out and recommend some other note-worthy & enjoyable titles. Already found Battle Royale 1 & 2 on DVD. Thanx

His movies are usually incoherent insanity, from what I've seen: City of Lost Souls, Fudoh, Ichi the Killer. With the exception being Audition which is a fucking masterpiece of horror. I have DOA on dvd and the Katakuris tivo'd off sundance or ifc but I havent watched them yet. Miike's stuff is always fun though, so I will definitely watch this and any of his movies I get a chance too.
July 5, 2004, 10:09 p.m. CST
a movie with CGI, flashy costumes, soundtracks, and unnecessarily slow and ridiculous pacing. The package in this case is all that mattered - as for story and good dialogue... they decided "fuck it". The fans will swallow it up regardless.

I realize most people get on these talk backs just to berate and belittle anything and everything that is posted by the staff of this site. But why bash a director you know little or nothing about? Miike is a genius and one of the best film makers of this generation. Sure he's made his share of stinkers ( Fudoh, Full Metal Yakuza, etc.) but the good far outways the bad. And to those calling his movies incoherent, they are clearly over your head. I've seen about 20 of Miike's film and I wouldn't call any of them incoherent (well maybe Gozu).Despite the apparent insanity you see on screen, if you watch and pay attention to what's going on, what triggers what, why things are exaggerated, etc. they make complete sense. Please stop bashing what you don't understand.
July 6, 2004, 10:34 p.m. CST
just a hair about Paul Thomas "Look at me rip off Robert Altman and look like a buffoon" Anderson Miike is a very good director. His most famous film, "Ishi" is probably one of his lesser films, but "Happiness of the Katakuris" is sublime, insane fun.

I bet the same mofos bashing this flick before seeing it will have it in their collection when it comes out. Miike flicks serve their purpose very well. They tell a good story if you pay attention, they satisfy your bloodlust, and they are perfect choices to show your homies who may not be hip to these kinds of movies. Just watching the shock on your boys' faces as they peep the sickness is priceless! Watch Citizen Kane if you can't handle it, stiff ass cocksuckers!
I don't exactly get it why this trailer is "so great"? It's some cheaply edited jap-low-budget spot.. so? To me it looks pathetic, but oh well..

Alright, not the best joke in the world, but a boring trailer like that didn't really deserve much effort.
