Anime news!
Let me introduce myself, I am a long time reader of your page. Recenty
I got a chance to talk to one of the movers and shakers in the Anime
Industry
and he had an interesting tidbit for me. There is a very popular series
(both
here and in Japan) called Neon Genesis Evangelion. The entire TV series has
been released, but many things including politics, a Japanese IRS tax raid,
and
a number royalty issues have kept the movies from being released.
The EVA tv series was rumoured to be picked up by MTV earlier, but ADV
(the american company that ownes the rights) said they haven't.
Here's the scoop. Sony made a bid for 1.2 _million_ bucks to pick up the
movies (all of the Japanese companies are _desperate_ for American Cash
right now) and was _turned down_. Someone else got the rights, presumably
for more money. The only way that any company can make back 1.2 million is
to release it in theaters.
Anyways, if it is interesting, post it, if not .... oh well...

I seen the first 4-5 half hour episodes of this great series, and all Im gonna say is it is some of the best Anime I've ever seen. I f this they decide to realease it in theaters (which i doubt, considering that right now there is 13 hours of story, and more every 2 months)that it would probably be bigger than Akira was here, and the toy markets would have a hay-day with the EVA's and their drivers.

Sugoi! I'm a BIG fan of Evangelion and I've been wanting to see the movies ever since I finished watching the end of the series a few weeks ago. I hope this rumor is true, that SOME American company has indeed bought the rights to the movies. I, for one, would go to the theatres to see them! ^_^

that Neon Genesis Movie deal
by letz call me some putz thats unworthy ra
It's very possible that they could do that movie thing with Neon Genesis for one good reason... (I know this cause I've seen the first one and read the script to the second and plus I know my stuff on anime, don't fuck with me on it :>) The first movie is a recap of this series and the second is a telling of the last day on earth (you heard me right, this series deals alot with that crap) an any of this B.S. being forcefed about it can't happen cause so an so or they own the rights or whatever is total B.S. Harry, why???? Cause if they're crazy enough to bring Princess Monoke to the states without even knowing that it will sell here then they aparently have to know their stuff on Neon Genesis. I got freinds who hate the big eyed cartoons and they still watch this series... Neon is a very moving storyline, it helped me figure out a few things about what I want out of life, cause it's sorta like Good Will Hunting Meet's Star Wars with the emperor winning. You got this kid who is being forced to save the earth, and he himself is unsure if he wants to do it cause everywhere around him his freinds die because of stuff he is unintentionally responsible for, he's just hitting puberty and getting no luck with the lady's and he has the ability to do something no one else does, but he don't want it, he just wants to know what there is to life... If you have the time... please please please, I beg of you, watch this series, I'll mail you my pirate copies of episodes 1-24 (the last two episodes you'll have to get yoruself cause I don't have them) if you'll watch this series and lemme know what you think, trust me Harry, this is the well deserved anime, it's made me an alot of my burn out junkie 22 no where life freinds actually consider getting real jobs, moving out and actually consider marriage and stuff, if you've seen this already, disregard the offer, if you wanna see it, I can send ya my copies (you can keep them even)

I saw all the Eva movies (Death/Rebirth/The End of Evangelion) and they are super fucking cool! BUT! Besides the extreme violence (super fucking cool!), there are few nudy scenes and sexual situations (Shinji doin' the chicken chokin', certain gal sittin' on top of certain boy, etc.) that would be deemed unacceptable to many, especially considering the age of the Eva pilots. If they do release them here, they will probably be butchered up quite a bit.

Not just anime, mind you, but all animation has taken it's blows at the box office. Anastasia did alright, but just alright. Mulan, despite being fairly well received by critics, still tanked. American attempts at mature animation on the big screen have always done poorly.
So when you're asking US audiences to go see anime for the ticket price these theaters are charging now? No, I can't see it happening. Would i have wet 'em if I got to see either Akira or Ghost In The Shell in a theatre? How about the uncut, authorized Nausicaa? Darn right... but it just doesn't work that way. The US still views animation as kids stuff, folks. -
I just got an email from an interested party who had something interesting to say.
They told me that Gainax refused to sell the movies to anybody for less than $5mil. That's Five Million PER movie (Death and End of Eva), and they will only sell them in a package. This is just a rumor, but it does explain why they'd pass up Sony's deal and why nobody has actually come forward on signing such a huge product.
Hopefully reality will set in for the big G-men and they'll take an offer from SOMEBODY soon ^_^ -
Okay, here it is. First. I just talked to a rep from Sony Pictures and he told me in so many words that Sony DID make a bid but for 1.7 mill and was flattly turned down. If you saw Street fighter the animated movie released here in the US by Sony you know why.
I also found out from a Japanese friend that Gainax is waiting for the movies to be released in Japan on video before they release it in America. Why, do you ask? Here's the story.
Death and Rebirth was released in Japan a while ago. THe T.V series ended about a year or so ago in Japan. However, End of Evangelion just finished its run in Japan this summer. So the movies haven't even been released in Japan on video yet. Here is how they are going to do it. Or did it... I think the first one should by now.
We here in the States thought we were cool cause we got the last two TV episodes before they did in Japan. This past summer tape 13 came out (containing the last two Eva tv eps 25&26, that were hated in Japan. When the last two TV episodes aired in Japan the people HEATED them and there was a public outcry to Anno Hideki to re do the endings because NO ONE could figure them out. He did as they wished and even though I think the movies are more f'ed up then the TV shows the people loved it) 13 was released early. Meanwhile, the re-edited End of Eva was still in the theatres (re-edited? They released End of Eva, the continuation of Rebirth, as is at first then pulled it and tacked on Rebirth w/o the Death part and re-titled it as "Rebirth (True)/ My Purest Heart For You- The End of Evangelion") Now, I hope I haven't lost you. In Japan they are releasing the TV episodes WITH the movies on the same tapes! The Japanese are getting an Extra tape! Their tape 13 is going to have Rebirth first and then TV episode 25. Their tape 14 is going to have End of Eva and TV episode 26!!!!! So as it were the Japanese are getting the COMPLETE story of Evangelion while we sit around and stuff beans up our nose. There are some really good fansubs of the movies out there, go get um because the US release of the Evangelion movies will happen sometime after the LAST three Star Wars movies (episodes 7,8,& 9) come out. As for the $$$$ issue Yes Gainax wants a shitload of money for the movies. I would too.
