What the hell does "QT" have to do with this??? lol

    by watashiwadare

There's this guy who makes movies called Yimou Zhang, he takes credit for his own work not others....If "QT" supported asian films so much why did he make such a shitty "camp" stereotype of what he thought they were doing in them? Plus he killed all the asian characters in them. How does that equate with "love" of asian cinema? You guys didn't get that? Really?

Anyone else kinda worried about Zhang Yimou's new direction?...

I don't know... As much as I enjoyed Hero for all its mythically operatic storytelling and oil-painting visual splendour, I'm not sure I like the idea of the man responsible for "Red Sorghum', 'Raise the Red Lantern' and 'Ju Dou', not to mention making himself Public Enemy #1 with his unabashedly honest portrayal of Chinese life for many who could never speak for themselves, making this strange transition into increasingly mainstream-ish Martial Arts films. Of course, being 'mainstream' isn't inherently bad, but for a director so famous for making films that are brutally honest, a little taboo and hard to digest for those they are subversively criticising (probably why the Chinese government give him such a hard time), it's like seeing any number of similarly against-the-grain directors succumbing to financial/social/peer pressure and decide to start emulating Michael Bay the best he can. It's almost as if Zhang has tired of being spat at by both his government (which sometimes puts choke holds on his productions) and the people in his own country for "making China look bad", that he just gave in because he wanted a bigger house and less hate mail. Hero, for all its splendor, struck me as being complicatedly and subtly self-deconstructive. At first glance it seemed like an almost Fascist film, but after a closer look, it seemed like it was being a propaganda film that was trying to hint at how falsely manipulative propaganda films can be, and almost mocking you for being so roused by it. But then again, this was a so-subtle-it-almost-wasn't-there level of "Hero". I don't know... It saddens me to see someone so in love with his own country that he feels compelled to tell everyone around him what needs to be fixed, only to, it seems, shrink away when the crowd gets angry for being so forthright about things they would rather turn a blind eye to... Funny how that happens no matter where in the world you live.

    Zhang ZiYi

    by ftoad

Zhang ZiYi should be a household name in America pretty soon. She's beautiful, talented, and comes across great on the screen. Who kicks more ass than her?
