Scorsese's THE AVIATOR trailer hits the web! Check it out!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a nice little peek into the world that Martin Scorsese is crafting around the man, the myth, the legend Howard Hughes. The quality of the trailer is a little on the iffy side, but you can tell through some of the pixels that this is a beautiful, nostalgic world. I'm expecting greatness, what about you?
Hey Harry.
Just a quick scoop on the latest trailer here. This was just posted and thought you'd like a look at Scorsese's latest, "The Aviator".
CLICK IT HERE, FOLKS, AND HEAD FOR THE SKIES!!!
Looks like Scorsese might be just the one to tell this tale of the late Howard Hughes. Let's hope that DiCaprio doesn't get in the way of what could be great storytelling.
You may continue to call me Pierce Inverarity.

This looks like garbage. No one cares about this story. Scorcese and Dicaprio will are heading down the same shitty road of the lamer duo of Spielberg and Hanks.
-
Leo wants his oscar nomination so bad he can hardly take it. I don't blame him for teaming up with Scorcese again, but Scorcese has lost his touch. Can't wait to hear Peter Gabriel and U2 on the soundtrack like GANGS. hahhaha GAY!

I don't know.....I don't see Paul LeMat anywhere in this film....they better make up for Melvin's abscence with a whole lot of boobies.....And thus, I have spoken! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

Scorsese ups the ante on Raging Bull's camera flashbulbs. Now we get 'em stomped on, too. NICE!
Any film film with the unctuous duo of Alec 'n Alan as adversaries is aces in my book. -
Who is this Hughard Hugs dude and WHY? I mean, I am sure each of us have a story of his own, for example take yours: wanking in the morning, asking mommy to make the bed for you, playing some shitty console game all day, then wanking some more, then pissing off your hard work parents, then you go to sleep and dream you get laid, which, believe me, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! So, why they are not making an Oscar movie based on the very fucking true story of your wonderful life??! They can call it The Turtle Ninga Wannabe: A Story of a Midget Dick and there you go, maybe some ugly chick will finally recognize you and suck your balls. So, yeah, Scorsese should have stick making those crazy mob movies, not this gay shit. Wtf is wrong with the world these days?! Personally, I am still dreaming on a Scorsese remake of Ichi the Killer.

Actually, there hasn't ever been one made before The Aviator. And the man is such an American icon. Go figure.

Why'd Marty go for this mainstream hack instead of getting Jay Cocks or Schrader to write this? That'll be his Waterloo, you watch.

Tucker: The Man and His Dream, is basically the same plot, but probably better executed. However, I don't think Preston Tucker was a Germaphobe, so that could be interesting. .. you know I'm basing this on a trailer so what the Effing Hell do I know?

what's up with the first shot. Sexual connotation?... Leo grabs his 'stick'. Leo still looks way, way too young. It's almost laughable. Benefit of doubt because it's Marty though.

Isn't there anyone who can appreciate an old-fashioned Hollywod yarn when done right? God forbid you go see a historical piece and learn something about one of America's most intriguing public figures. Yeah, John Logan may have written the screenplay, but Scorsese has his hands in the writing process of every film. It won't be Gladiator. To say that this is Oscar bait because it's from Miramax and being released in December is just tired material. Miramax is in the movie BUSINESS. Their goal as a company is to make money. If they put on the full-court-press for a prestige picture by a great director with great actors, it's no different than Sony putting Spider-Man on everything imaginable to promote its film. So stop begrudging the Weinstens their awards. Go shit on them for something else, like hacking apart Shaolin Soccer. It's also not Martys's fault that every thing he touches that has a decent budget is going to be potential Oscar material. You can say the same thing about Ridley Scott. As for The Aviator, it looks like the closest Marty's ever come to making a Spielberg film. Those visuals sure look like Stevie's, with a little extra Scorsese zip. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because the material seems to require that hybrid approach. It may resemble Tucker, but I think the Hughes story has much darker undertones that call for someone like Scorsese. I am there opening day, and I'd love for Marty to legitimately bring home the gold next february, without a bunch of people feeling it was a make up award. I thought he rightly deserved it for Gangs anyway, the most brilliant and ambitious mess I've seen in many a year. Other directors don't even have the balls to aim that high.
-
Is THAT gonna be in your movie, Mr. Scorcese? Hmmm?
-
But then NO MOVIE IS ANYMORE! I think the Aviator looks okay. I'll probably see it if it continues to look good, but if the word of mouth is bad I'll skip it. If the word of mouth is REALLY bad I won't even check out the DVD.

You guys make me despair sometimes. I've been reading the recent stories regarding Spielberg's THE TERMINAL and resisted the increasing urge to respond to the unbelievable level of banality and sheer, outright ignorance of those posting in Talkbacks. We're still weeks away from seeing THE TERMINAL and a further six months before the release of THE AVIATOR, and yet for some reason completely unknown to me, this site has played host to what can be described as little more than a wave of vitriolic attacks against both Spielberg and Scorsese (and to a lesser degree, Hanks and DiCaprio), and their two new respective films that nobody commenting on has even watched yet. Is this what things have come to? I'm simply at a loss to understand what is motivating this idiocy. Disregarding my own opinions of what these films may be (for the record, I think THE TERMINAL will more than likely end up being the best entertainment of the summer and a perfect follow-up to CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, if the style and tone of the very appealing trailer is an accurate taster for the finished film, whilst THE AVIATOR must be considered one of the leading contenders to be among the best releases of the year), how on earth do two of cinema's genuine living legends merit such callous disregard? I don't think that anyone is necessarily looking upon THE TERMINAL as a major Spielberg film, but there remain few filmmakers in whom audiences can place their trust more implicitly. And why should it matter if this film is merely an enjoyable diversion? Aside from the fact there is nothing wrong with orchestrating undemanding entertainment, particularly when it is delivered with the skill and acumen that Spielberg brings to the table, how often has it been those 'entertainments' that have shown Spielberg at his best? I have a great deal of admiration for A.I., without a doubt in my mind his most thematically challenging and divisive work (though I have no desire to start another debate over the success/failure of the film) and thought MINORITY REPORT was a brilliant reminder of the scope and density of the director's visual imagination. Both were huge projects, and yet, for me, it is CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, described as a comparatively 'minor' piece in numerous reviews, and shot, edited and released in little over six months that it his most charming and complete film in many years (in fact, I would rank it in my top five all-time Spielberg's), and demonstrates how a filmmaker of ambition (and make no mistake, Spielberg is as daring a filmmaker as there is within the mainstream) can thrive on the simplicity of a character-driven entertainment. Spielberg is in the most intriguing phase of his career right now, and it is with the 'simple' pleasures of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN in mind that we should anticipate THE TERMINAL, and there's no reason to believe he won't deliver the goods. Scorsese, on the other hand, remains one of America's most muscular filmmakers, and I think THE AVIATOR is a very interesting film. The potential of this kind of material in Scorsese's hands is immense, and the intertwining themes of fame, ambition, obsession, and, of course, movies that will inevitably be central here could make for fascinating viewing, given the tumultuous dual trails of Scorsese's own personal and professional lives. And I think we could well see a different Scorsese here. Now free of the marathon trials of finally bringing his great labor of love to the screen, it is with excitement that I wonder what kind of films Scorsese may now make in the aftermath of GANGS OF NEW YORK. And whatever that film's flaws, it still provided more than ample evidence of this director's unquestionable greatness. And beyond Scorsese himself, if you can't get excited about a cast of Cate Blanchett, Jude Law, Alec Baldwin, Kate Beckinsale, John C. Reilly, Ian Holm, Alan Alda, Willem Dafoe and more backing up DiCaprio, who showed how fine an actor he can be in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, then you never will. The point is, let's get some perspective. There are reasons to be pessimistic about the current state of cinema, but the films of these two directors are not one of them. Spielberg and Scorsese remain vital. The films they have made over the past thirty years remain vital. And the films they have yet to make could be just as important. So have some respect.

... but I think it looks amazing. Picking what part of the Hughes story to tell is half the battle, and it looks like Scorsese picked the part that is actually cinematic and exciting. Leo's perfect for the role, and I hope he pulls it off. Right now, mark this down as one of the winter's big ones to watch out for, IMO.
-
...scorsese sucks. He's such a hack. All those beautiful shots. An intriguing subject. Getting the guy who wrote all that great dialouge from RKO 281 to write this movie. Casting Leo. I mean really shut this guy down! What is with people? It's a new Scorsese movie! It looks great. And Dicaprio has only gotten better I think. I didn't used to be a fan. But he doesn't make very many movies. Why shouldn't he work with one of THE GREATEST auteurs in cinema history twice. By the way...Scorsese tossed off an amazing gem of a movie with Bringing Out the Dead and no one even cared. I can't wait. I mean if anybody truely tries to make great movies its Marty. And he's only gotten more interesting these past 10 or so years. Even if the movies aren't total successes always. Or we get all get lulled by another pretentious, contrived predictable movie like 21 Grams that was arthouse formula 101. Or another horrific cynical blockbuster.
-
I didn't realize that Howard Hughes did all that and seduced all those movie stars when he was only 12 years old!

Could it be that in all this talk about Howard Hughes movies, there is nary a mention of Jonathan Demme's masterpiece, "Melvin and Howard" (save for a small Paul Le Mat joke)? No wonder you guys bitch about these films before they come out: you haven't seen good films, have no sense of the history of cinema, and wouldn't recognize a great film if it sat on a shelf in a videostore with Jason Robards on the cover and Jonathan Demme in the credits. Shut down and turn on a movie!
-
I love Scorsese. Let's keep that in the records. I can't wait to see this movie. But I do have to say this: This is the first time that I think I've seen a filmmaker that was actually inspired by that Ben Affleck Pearl Harbor crapfest. Look at Kate Beckinsale in this one. It's like Scorsese said, "Look up that hot broad in Pearl Harbor. She can do the period makeup look."
-
Watching the trailer, "Tucker" came to my mind, too. Tucker is one of my five personal favorite movies, and I think it is a shame that it has fallen to the dustbin of memory; Joe Jackson's score alone deserves discovery by those too young or who missed this movie the first time. I know that we Internet posters tend to be a cynical bunch, but Tucker is, to me, the definition of a feel-good movie that harkens back to when Capra could make Meet John Doe.
About the Aviator, I thought that this movie was going to be a full biography of Hughes. Scorcese is playing it safe by focusing on the young, anti-establishment Hughes. Where this movie will end could be interesting, because I think it is generally agreed that a terrible plane crash "turned on" Hughes's OCD behaviors. Despite the fact that Leonardo just looks too damn young to be playing captains of industry, this could still be enjoyable at matinee prices while Scorcese gets his career Oscar. -
is the ya-hoo cowboy HH from the last Sean Connery Bond movie, "Diamonds are Forever." Famous sausage king Jimmy Dean plays "Willard Whyte," a former world class aviator, movie producer and millionaire who now lives as a recluse in the penthouse atop the Sands. It's so off-target as to what HH was REALLY doing up there, that it works like a window into the past. The average American knew HH was up there, but it was anybody's guess what he was like.
-
But as George Carlin once commented, when it comes to political parties... sorry, folks, only got two... yeah, sorry, you gotta pick... one... of... of the two, yyyyyeah. Anyway, I think that's an interesting theory, and it's one of the reason's that I gravitated towards an Apple laptop when i bought one recently. There just weren't as many choices and it was far less confusing. Besides that, it's very true. At the supermarket, there's a million different choices between breads, cookies, chips, breads, etc. You go buy a pair of sneakers and it's just fucking insane how many choices there are and it's often impossible to tell the difference and every single store has different styles from the other store you went to. You decide you wanna read up on history a little, you go to the bookstore, and every week there's 30 new books on the American Revolution. It's like... when did choosing between products, sources of information, entertainment, and foods become a second full-time job? I'm in the market for a new car, and among mid-size SUV's there are like 20 to choose from. The anxiety of making the wrong choice in these instances is soon going to produce a kind of stasis, or a mass consumer paralysis.
-
Hooray for actors playing actors, I always like that. Personally I really like Leo, I haven't seen titanic, but i've seen most everything else he's done, and even if the movie's poor, I like his presence. The accents seems like it might be a little grating in this one, but beyond that it's all gravy. Seems like a good character, seems like a good representation of an era. I'll be there, ticket in hand.

Looks like ass...but it's Martin so it's to be expected.
by the_pissboy1
Bad trailer for a film by an overrated director. will it be any shock if the side stories and sets/costumes and character parts are far better than the main plot/character? It happens consistently with Marti's big, bold style of telling too much story and picking the uninteresting one to tell...like Gangs of NY.
-
Martin is trying to make Leo the next DeNiro, but he still looks all of 17.
