Complete KILL BILL Cannes screening review!!! Viva Chiba!!!

Published at:  Jun 04, 2004 4:47:37 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some baaaaddaaasss news on the Cannes screening of the full on KILL BILL experience... that intigrated cut of Volumes 1 and 2. Hate to say I told ya' so, but it seems to confirm my belief that the only major flaw the films have were what was lost in seperating the two halves. The flow, the character motivations... that sort of thing. I love both halves equally... The first really falling under my light "I wanna watch some blood and hear some awesome pop music" mood and the second when I'm feeling more like Leone. I can't wait to see these two suckers together and for you US folks to see the Japanese cut of the HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES sequence... it's killer! Anyway, on with Empire's cool review!!!

Hi, Harry,

Well, this is the first report I've been able to find regarding Kill Bill - the whole damn story. Enjoy!

Kill Bill films were too long

    by darth_billy

My personal opinion of the 2 Kill Bill films, is that it seems patently obvious that what we have is a 2 1/2 hour film, spread out into 4 hours. Thereby slowing scenes down with mundanely slow camera movements, and looong pauses between dialog. I don't care what anyone says, it's a flaw. The films are fine the first time round, but then upon repeat viewings they become reallly slow. I have no doubt whatsoever, that if we got a tighter 2-3 hour version of Kill Bill, as one film, it would be a kickass film, as strong as Pulp Fiction. I mean, there are loads of great moments in the films, some really interesting, funny and scary characters. Some clever dialog, but the films need to be tighter..... and ... sorry for the FIRST posts the other day. I bow my head in shame.

Kill Bill Full - D.I.Y Version

    by high grade 4 eva

Hey man, don't wait for tarantino to bring it to ya, do it yourself!!
You can find the jap cut of Bill 1 out there, i had it 2 months now. Then you get a dodgy screener of Bill 2, and arrange them scenes however you think!
More fun than a 5 foot joint!
    (well almost)......

    QT: Genius

    by irishjoe

Its that simple. Have only seen Kill Bill Vol 1 twice. Havent seen Vol 2 yet. Missed it in Cinemas but have read the Screenplay. You just got to give the man credit, freedom and your time. Dont downplay anything he does. His films have flaws. All films do, but noone else today is doing what he does or anything close in the Hollywood studio system. I'll watch anything he does and be double dipped, triple dipped even quadrupledipped. Why?? because I love movies and anything he churns out is infinitely better than almost anything else Hollywood can make.

  • It really makes me wonder where the metal for those swords came from. If I recall large amounts of THE IRON GIANT had been deposited all over the globe...well, the swords The Bride uses prob are not made from THE IRON GIANT's parts, but it would be nice to think that He is living on in other ways while His body comes back together.

    It's The Bloody Beatles

    by napoleon park

In The Beatles Anthology TV Special (and, I assume, the subsequent expanded editions as well) a reporter relates to Paul McCartney the popularly held opinion that the two record set "The Beatles" (sometimes known as "The White Album") would have been a great album if it had ben edited down to a single LP. McCartney's retort, which I can't recall verbatim (and I'm not going to watch a six hour tape looking for it) is along the lines of "Screw that! It's the bleedin' Beatles! It IS bloody great!" I think it was in his Rolling Stone article that Tarantino stated he was aware that Kill Bill one and two could have been edited down into a single movie of reasonable length, but his opinion was that that would have involved taking out too much of what he liked aboutit. Oddly the inability or unwillingness to edit your own material is a common failing among amateur writers, and the need to be willing to part with things you've written is refered to as "killing your darlings". If the long form or the double feature is too slow paced and you feel you've spent enough of your life watching this movie already, by all means don't buy it again. But Tarantino is an auteur, and reportedly an eccentric and somewhat egocentric one, so it's unlikely pressure from fans or critics is going to convince him to trim his darling creation to lace. Now if Ted Turner offers him a million bucks to turn in a two hour PG rated edit he can run on TNT, that might make an impression... Personallly, I've only seen Kill Bill once, but, yeah, it IS bloody great.

GingerTwit You fool - Lord of the rings was flawed for the oppos

    by darth_billy

Since you brought LOTR into it.. If there are any flaws with LOTR it is that you have a 12-15 hour film, being compressed into 9 hours. Hence the extended editions actually making the films superior (unlike most extended editions). IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE to have a good film, that is long and ponderous.. it's just the style of the story. LOTR should be long, it should involve lots of talking, slow shots and pondering on the scenery. It is perfect for that. (It is in any case, coupled with some of the most frenetic scenes ever commited to celluloid). . . Kill Bill, just doesn't (to my mind) fit right as it is, BECAUSE OF the pondering. I'm telling you, if Kill Bill was cut down to a 2 1/2 hour film, it would have been killer. but there is no way that QT would admit that, because (for goodness sake), we are talking about MILLIONS of dollars being at stake. (not chump change). At the end of the day, he keeps the Weinsteins (sp) happy, and he makes more films.

    I saw it in Cannes...

    by no-no

...and it's much better than the sum of its parts. It makes more sense, the "first part" becomes less fluffy and meaningless and you don't get that awkward "as seen in the previous episode" bit at the beginning of 2. It's still not a very good movie however, Old Boy in the same theme of revenge presented this year was by far more interesting and entertaining... I'll probably buy the dvd for my dad though, he likes fun action movies.

David Carridine & Micheal Jai White Fight?

    by big-boy-bob

Does anyone know if QT put the Bill & Spawn fight back in, man Snake Charmer looks like he can kick serious ass but I want to see him do it... If not bring on the rumoured 5 hour cut with all the extras, we'll only have to wait until we've bought all the other previous versions... Wanker!

    The Bride and O-Ren

    by jack burton

The thing I'm most curious about is if it goes into O-ren and The Bride's relationship in more detail. The Bride knows more about O-ren then any of the others, the fight seems more sentimental, and The Bride really seems upset having to kill her. The way they talk to each other and look at each other seems like there is more history there. Why was O-ren the 1st on the list? After watching Vol 1 a few times it seems to be that they were friends, more then the others, and her betrayal hurt The Bride more then even Bill's.

Any thoughts or am I out in left field?

    I've Seen Vol. 1 and 2 Back To Back...TWICE!

    by utz_world

And not on the bootleg market but in actual movie theatres. First time was at the mighty Cinerama Dome in Hollywood (where QT flaked out on a Q & A after the "public" premiere of Vol. 2) and again at the one place where the two volumes would and should best be appreciated: a drive-in movie theatre! Seeing them back to back is worth it. It'll definitely tide you over until this 4 hour supercut hits the block.

KILL BILL VS ZATOICHI Vol. 2

    by mr brownstone

I loved Takeshi's take on Zatoichi, even though the ending seemed unnessesarily oblique. But why compare it to Kill Bill. The only thing they really have in common is samurai swords, Japanese people and blood -- the geysers in Zatoichi being mostly CGI, but still to strong effect. The tone and atmosphere of the films couldn't be more different in my opinion although both Tarantino and Takeshi like to deconstruct familiar genres. Brother and Violent Cop are lesser works by Takeshi. To really see him in full effect check out SONATINE (my personal favorite) and FIREWORKS (aka Hana-Bi).

    zatoichi again

    by jimb_holland

cheers mr. brownstone. I'll look those films up. I guess i was comparing kill bill to zatoichi simply because I saw them in a short space of time, and I haven't seen many other samurai based films (something i know needs to be remedied)

    Film lengths....

    by theginger twit

See the thing is with Lord of the Rings... they're JUST TOO DAMN LONG. And yes I agree, the extended versions were better. But still, I'm an editor myself and I know exactly how I'd cut these films down. I also know exactly how I'd re-shoot scenes too, but thats beside the point, there are some classic errors in all three films. Mostly the continually coming back to previous scenes where nothing new is added to the dialogue. Also, another problem lies in the actual adaption. I'm aware that adapting the lord of the rings book was no easy feat... but the scripts they had could have been taken down yet another couple of notches. Ok, what are we getting at here? Look at it this way... in 10 - 20 years time, these films are REALLY going to date badly in sections. Specific moments I can think of include some of the poorly scored battle scenes in TTT. And that God-Aweful film school/telemovie look in ROTK when a)Pippin (hope it was him) picks up the eye of Sauron (Or is it Soramon?) and he starts flipping out like he's squeezing a pinapple out him arse. Terrible direction. That song he sings, with the candles behind him - really bad 80's homoerotic looking. And all the close ups of people eating and slobbering. 'Yes, thank you, thats gross." I know the argument now is that it was meant to be gross, to show you how gross they are. Yes, well, thats like a fart joke to show you how funny someone is. It's garanteed. I respect the work of the film makers though. I just really find the whole series and it's huge release cluttered and over bearing. They should have just been 2 hour films. Ok, I'm running away now.
