THE MORBIDITY OF THE SOUL background

Published at:  Aug 03, 1998 6:03:18 AM CDT

Here's some background on THE MORBIDITY OF THE SOUL...

I read with interest your report on The Morbidity of The Soul.
I can confirm much of what your scooper, 'Bob', said and hopefully add
a bit more info. Cast your mind back, if you will, to Silence of The
Lambs' Oscar triumph....

Just after Silence won the four main Oscars, it was announced
in one of the British papers ( The Daily Mail if I remember correctly,
and I usually do ;-) ) that Thomas Harris was to start work on the
third Lecter book, provisionally titled "The Morbidity of The Soul".

According to the report, the story concerns a copy cat killer
emulating his idol, Lecter. Meanwhile, the still free Lecter hears of
this and isn't best pleased and sets out to stop the copy cat, _and_
prove that he's a better killer.

Meanwhile, Clarice Starling and Jack Crawford set out to catch
them both.

Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Demme (director)
were all said to be returning for the sequel.

This was back in 90/91, and the book still hasn't been
released, so I guess the final version on page and screen could well
be different, as well as those taking part.

I would like to see _this_ story myself, but would settle for
just about anything with Lecter and Starling.

Great site, keep up the good work,

    The Big Five (Not Four)

    by uncle poochinski

The above information was an interesting tidbit that I recall as well, but I just wanted to clarify that the Silence sweep at the Oscars consisted of the film's winning what is generally thought of as the Big Five (as opposed to four) awards. These consist, of course, of Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay -- adapted or original. Prior to Silence, only Capra's It Happened One Night and Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest accomplished this feat.

    Morbidity of the Soul

    by vole

About the Silence of the Lambs sequal: Jonathan Demme and Ted Tally said that they considered doing a sequel on their own instead of waiting for Harris to finish his book, but soon realized that the only person who can write Lecter is Thomas Harris. Something that I totally agree with. I read this in an article I don't remember where. Also, an interview with the publisher of Thomas Harris a few years back said that they didn't know when he would finish the next book, saying all they knew was that it would be Clarice hunting Lecter, and she said that they do not push Harris at all to finish since he is so popular. She kind of said that he will get it done when he is ready. I can't wait and think that it is imperatie that Demme, Foster and Hopkins be all involved as well as Ted Tally.
On another note, I totally love this site and check it daily!

    The book...

by do i use my real name here? just call me

I don't know how helpful this, but a couple of Christmases ago I was working in a bookstore in Manchester, England, and there was talk then that the new Thomas Harris book, "The Morbidity of the Soul" was coming out really soon. The reps were expecting it that year, I know, and I guy I knew that was a projectionist had seen this movie title on a list of upcoming productions he'd recieved from some official source. Next thing we knew, there was no further word on the Harris book and nothing on the film. Generally speaking, when that happens with a book like that, which is all set to appear and is then pulled, it is normally suspected that the publisher had some problem with the final draft... That's all I know for now, but I'll ask my bookselling mates and try and find out more.

    by john mclame

    I just got the new
    DVD Criterion version of Silence
of the Lambs. Man it kicked ass.
It had Demme, Foster & Hopkins
    giving commentary throughout the
    movie. Plus CUT SCENES baby!!!
    Highly recommend this one.
I appreciate the movie more than ever now.
