GODZILLA sighted in Sydney! Read about it here!!!

Published at:  May 31, 2004 4:17:37 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Ahoy, squirts. Quint here with a rather... odd look at the much anticipated GODZILLA: FINAL WARS. That pic that Harry posted a few days ago was balls-out cool. This below observations from the streets of Sydney... is pretty unexpected. I never expected something like this from a Godzilla movie, but hey... the times, they are a changin'! Enjoy the below report!!!

Regicidal_Maniac here with a first hand on-set report of Ryuhei Kitamura's Godzilla Final Wars.

Godzilla: Final Wars filming on Sydney streets now and tonight.
According to the very friendly crew guys and flying debris wranglers
this afternoon Ryuhei Kitamura flew in to Sydney last night for a
marathon 24 hour shoot and then he's flying back to Japan.
They were filming the "ARRRRGGHH Gojiraaaa!!!! Run away! Run
AWAYYY!!!!" scenes next to the Capitol theatre off Hay Street this
afternoon and I know where they'll be filming again tonight. I'm not
saying because I don't want a whole bunch of random Geeks showing up,
but as I'm on my way to Cargo Bar this eve I'll definitely be dropping
by the set.

Long Live The King Of The Monsters.

UPDATE:

Congrats to the at least one of you who found the second Godzilla
Final Wars filming location on Kent St last night.

They were set up there all night, so I stopped by on my way to Cargo
and since they were filming until 5am I also staggered by on my way
back.

It was an awesome scene. They'd turned the section of Kent Street between Druitt and Marrjet Streets into a New York City street scene complete with post-boxes, a USA today newspaper dispenser and a giant NYPD towing truck and a
flashy red Cadillac pimpmobile.

The scene went (something) like this:

EXT NYC Street - NIGHT.

A white COP is making the final preparations to tow a shiny red Caddy
away from the tow-zone in front of a Jazz club.

A disheveled black homelessman BUM with a layers of coats and a bottle
of alcohol observes the scene from his position on a dumped sofa on
the street.

A black PIMP in a giant fur overcoat comes striding towards the Cop.

PIMP:

"Hey! Yo Yo Yo man, Don't touch my fuckin' car. I only been parked
here for five fuckin' minutes!"

COP:

"Five fuckin' minutes, five fuckin' seconds It don't fuckin' matter
either way to the NYPD."

Meanwhile the Bum on the couch has got up to have a closer look at the
street theatresque confrontation.

PIMP:

"Oh yo maan, Do you know who you are fuckin' messing with?"

The Cop sizes the Pimp up and down.

COP:

"I don't know, looks like some Wesley Snipes wannabe muthafucker to
me."

PIMP:

"I'm lookin' at a dead man."

Pimp starts to walk away and dramatically pulls his gun out and holds
it on the Cop, sideways gangsta style.

The Cop could care less.

COP:

"Man? Now why you gotta do that for? Do you know who you're messing
with? This badge says N-Y-P-D."

There were some improvised takes where the Cop puts a piece of donut
on the Pimp's gun, gets his donut knocked out of his hand (looks at it
forelornly on the ground, that one was my favourite) etc.
Then the Bum starts chiming in with his drunken babble and momentarily
distracts the Pimp giving the Cop enough time to pull out his gun and
hold it two handed on the Pimp.

There's shouting between all three until the Bum starts to look up and
yell.

BUM:

"ARRRGH!!! There's a BIG... Birdy-thing... Flying. A Big Flying Bird
thing in the sky." Etcetera.

They tell him to shut-up or he'll get shot first until the Pimp looks
up and lowers his gun and steps back.

Then the Cop turns around and looks up and steps back.

CUT end of scene.

There's probably more to that scene but I was out drinking and
cavorting.

I asked one of the crew liasons to Kitamura if this was Rodan in the
sky that they were pointing at and they said that it was indeed
Rodan's entrance. Everyone was really friendly, on set and at Cargo,
and they were surprised that there was anyone in the crowd who was
interested enough to know.

I wished them well and they told me that although Kitamura flies home
today they'll be continuing the shoot around town for the next week or
so with second unit scenes. So I'm going to be able to see more of
this kind of stuff.

Manm I'm not even FIRST! on my own scoop talkback.

    by regicidal_maniac

I was there I saw it and I was extremely surprised by the amount of swearing in the scene, what with Godzilla movies generally being considered kiddie fare. I was also surprised, pleasantly, by the easy access we all had to the filming location.

    That should read "Market street".

    by regicidal_maniac

"They'd turned the section of Kent Street between Druitt and MARKET Streets." (There's no such street as Marrjet Street, although it's cool street name.) Also it should say "Man" directly above this post, not "Manm" or whatever the Hell I mistyped. For any jaded AICN posters Aaron Smith of Clubtokyo.org/monsterzero/ has found a post from another onlooker which verifies what I posted http://gojistomp.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4685. So there you go. This film looks to be more of a Kitamura film than an average Godzilla film. I'll be there and I'll be very interested to see this scene in context.

I'm surprised we didn't get the man in suit chant . . .

    by kerraddock

then again that was Quint not Harry. I will say, however, that I'm begginig to feel the urge to join the chant myself. I love to see well executed CGI, but Godzilla and the other monsters still look better with a human in costume. Final Wars sounds awesome and it's cool there going out of Japan to shoot parts . . . even if they're shooting Sydney for NY. I'm glad NY will get some real monster lovin' . . . some vengeful smashings not just some slip and fall building destruction. I hope Sydney gets some destruction of it's own, no self respecting disaster filmmaker should pass up the opportunity to topple the Syndey Opera House. I also recommend "Gamera 3: Revenge of Irys" pretty sweet and some great effects. I'm not as big a fan of Gamera as the big G, but any movie that features a giant monster blowing off his own hand to escape the clutches of another giant monster is aces in my book.

    Um.... am I missing something...

    by boxclocke

...or is Godzilla really not interesting and actually worth reporting on. At all. I'm with whoever made the "nobody cares" statement. Note the lack of mention on AICN of Joblo putting up the televised Village footage for download. That's what I'm in the market for. Not a MAN IN SUIT. Maybe its just me, but that's my line of "Cool News."

    A monster ate my baby!!!

But on a serious note, Godzilla rules, I saw Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla yesterday and it rocked, I loved the man in suit genre. Yet I am a perfectly normal human worm baby like the rest of you. More puppets, I'm tired of CGI. Tell me a memorable likable CGI character and I will be tamed.

  • I seriously hope those scenes are reshot with better dialogue or eventually cut entirely, because that is absolute shit, even for a monster movie, and I want to love this flick.

Remember how much 'respect' the Japanese characters were treated

    by regicidal_maniac

Granted the dialogue is not high-art but it's a short scene and the introduction of Rodan, so it's probably not getting cut. It was amusing that this is how Japanese view the "American Way Of Life"; Trash-talking Pimps, drunken Bums, donut-eating Cops heaping helpings of profanity and plenty of gun-induced bravado. Sounds about right to me but then I know that's just the skewed image that the USofA presents, unintentionally, to the insignificant countries non-American, also commonly referred to as 'the rest of the world.' Non-Americans experience your culture through its pervasive presence in our news and media and through political travel advisements warning us not to travel to certain recently destablised and war-ravaged countries. Is it any wonder the simplistic short-hand view of America is guns, drugs, guns corruption, guns, violence and spurious pretexts for illegal invasions. I love Americans, for the most part they're just like people everywhere else except with a highly inflated sense of self importance. I am a huge fan of American accomplishments like the moon landing and anything by Bruce Timm. I hate your current leader but hopefully this coming November will bring good news. Until then good luck with "Operation Quagmire" Mr. 'President'. Don't be so upset by how the world sees you as a culture just sit back and enjoy the film for what it is, and if it really bothers you when others point your foibles and failings out to you, then change.

    More of that sequence

    by beat royale

Well, after Regicidal Maniac left (thanks for the location hints), Kitamura shot the same sequence from a couple more angles.

Then, the camera zooms in towards the pimp and the cop, the wind machine kicks in and their hats blow off (well, people lift them off using very hi-tech 'thread on a stick' techniques) - your standard Rodan sweeping above shot.

And any complaints about the dialogue should be checked. This is Godzilla! Its dumb, fun and cheesy! I couldn't stop grinning every take they did...
