Rumors on BATMAN 5 and SUPERMAN LIVES
Consider this stuff as strick rumor stuff. I've been hearing the same thing from multiple sources, but noone I absolutely trust. As for this scooper's SUPERMAN LIVES stuff, let us pray that at least JON PETERS is up in the air, in fact let us all hope a patriot missile thinks he's a scud up there. I really don't think Jon Peters is the right person to have any say whatsoever over SUPERMAN LIVES or any other film for that matter. Mr SHAMPOO is just too... non-in-sync with me, his projects have never been the stuff to make me go 'wowzers' over. And I haven't heard the most pleasant stories in the world about him. Now if the studio would just go pull Kevin Smith's script out of their library, put a fresh binder on it, and get a director with the right dynamics that 'gets' Kevin's script, then we'll be moving full steam ahead. Keep your fingers crossed.
I just heard something very interesting from a friend and former boss of
mine
who now works at Warner Bros. in L.A. As I was grilling him for info on any
Batman movie developments, which is is something I do occasionally, he told
me
that Kurt Russell was being considered, not for the role of the Dark Knight,
but for that of Commissioner Gordon! I would presume that this would be for
a"Year One" film; Russell is much too young to take over for Pat Hingle.
Let
me temper this information by saying that my friend did tell me that it
could
be disinformation spread as a cover story, and that Russell might actually
be
up for Batman. But he said he was told that talks with Russell are about
Gordon. A cool thought, nevertheless, huh?
He also told me that Superman Lives is definitely on, that Nicolas Cage is
still on board (they have too much money tied up in him to let him go), and
that Tim Burton and Jon Peters are "up in the air" (blow, wind, blow!).
And since I don't want to get my friend in trouble or anything, please don't
use my name. Call me...Stinky!

I too have heard this rumor, but I heard it a few months back and kinda dismissed it. I think it was probably on Corona's Coming Attractions, but I'm not sure. If they are gonna do a "Year One" movie (which would be kinda pointless, seeing as the first Batman movie WAS his first year as the caped crusader, hence no bat-signal and no definite reports of him)they have to get Tim Burton back, or at least get David Fincher to direct. I have nothing against Shumacher (heck, my "Name" up there is from "The Lost Boys", and I think he does good movie like TLB and "Falling Down", but they should get a restraining order to keep him away from anything remotely related to Batman, and when he goes to hell, I hope he doesnt mind the repeat viewings of "Batman & Robin", because many tortured souls down there are gonna want to know who subjicated them to this horror. Oh well, my 2 cents.

The site looks absolutely wonderful! It has needed a facelift for a long time and it looks like it should...
I know this sounds like a nit pick, considering all the major changes. But, since most of the interaction with the site is reading the various reports, perhaps this isn't such a nit.
Please reduce the font size in the reviews fron font+5. The great thing about the Web is that I can set my font preference to what **I** want it to be. If you're going to increase the font size, at least make it a +1 or +2 so that I can read more of each report on the screen.
Keep up the great work and wishing you continued success.

Even if Russel's not Gordon, I'd be happy to see more Gordon/Batman interactions. The movies have given the good commish about as much respect as the Adam West Batman. "Go Get'm Batman!!!" yick...
If anyone's read Batman: Year One, they know how much potential there is for a killer story.
Did the first Batman movie do year one already? There's so much to his origin they can do - his childhood, his training himself as martial artist/detective/escape artist/master of disguise/gymnast/etc. - and his first time on the streets.
The animated series' did it right:
Get Paul Dini involved !!!
Otherwise, forget Year One and bring on the Dark Knight Returns!

YES! Whatever they do next there HAS to be a strong James Gordon.
If they don't do Year One with Russel as Gordon, I've always said Sam Elliot as James would be great too.
They need to make Batman the detective he is in the comics, concentrate less on the toys, and a focus on the relationship between the dark knight and the commisioner. -
I swear, with the mess going on today of placing a "big name" actor along with a "big name" director and a "big name" screenwriter and paying almost 25 million with nothing even filmed, is insane. At this point, even a lacky like me could direct a Batman or Superman film in 3/4 the time with half the budget, keep the franchise alive, make it sensable AND make a profit.
...And if it breaks $500 million domestic, I get to kidney punch Peters. -
Hey what do you think? It's perfect. Both Jon and Lex want to destroy Supes. Jon says he's a Superman fan, yet he HATES the red and blue tights and the flying. Is there any question why 90% of the kovies that Warner Brothers are putting out end up at crap? They have people like Peters calling shots! And a note to Mr. Cage. Bulk up or get lost. The idea of Superman wearing a rubber suit (aka Batman) is an insult to the character. I have plenty more ravings about this movie, but I'll save that for another time.

This Batman 5 news, very nice and all, but you know, Batman is always the same; the villains are always the films' highlights. All I want to know is WHO IS THE VILLAIN! Don't you want to know, too? I am voting for Harley Quinn, of course. I've been hearing loads of rumors (most here at AICN) that it's supposed to be the Scarecrow. No thanks! There's never too much exciting about male villains... unless, of course, you can duplicate the success of Jack's Joker character from film #1. Seems to me they are trying to "darken" up the next film, or at least make it more realistic. Remember Catwoman? There was a seriously complex character (always the best kind) with really serious issues. Not to mention there were fun parts in there, too. Now let's apply this to Harley Quinn. Much like the Joker, the saddistic-maniacal-hilarious villian is always the best; not evil-malicious like the Scarecrow. And so what can you do with the Scarecrow? He's always been evil; end of story. There's nothing but pure malice. And who likes a one-sided villian? BORING!! But Harley Quinn use to be an upstanding normal citizen, just like everyone else. But she flips, and then you get a whole deal of personality conflicts. VERY INTERESTING!! So, please, let's go for Harley Quinn... and Harry, let's get a little pull going on! WE WANT HARLEY QUINN!
-
Alot of people say that Ewan McGreggor may be chosen to play Scarecrow, and I personally feel that would be a great idea, and at least a better idea than Howard Stern. Jeff Goldbum couldn't do that part as well as he could do Manbat. If the movie had Scarecrow and Manbat, that would rock. Beacause one of them is scary and the other thrives on the eliment of fear. It could verry well work with "The Year One" idea that's being pushed around too.
-
After hearing all of the YEAR ONE rumors, I borrowed a copy of it from a friend of mine. It is an excellent story. I think that it's basic story would make a great movie. However, it is way to complicated and violent for Warner to actually make it. If they do choose to pursue it, I hope that they try to get Frank Miller to write the screenplay.
He could simplify the story and tone down the violence in a way that is faithful to the original comic.
I think Kurt Russell is a good choice for this version of Gordon.
I just wonder what Morgan Freeman would do with the role. He may be
a little old, but he would give the character the depth it demands.
By the way, I think that you are way off base on Kevin Smith's Superman script. It has some good ideas and I like his dialog. However, I don't like putting Batman in the movie. Some of us like to keep our fantasy worlds separate.
Keep up the good work. Willi129 -
I think Seleck would be a very, very cool YEAR ONE Lt. Gordon (yeah, Lieutenant, ye of no faith - read the book!!!).
Year One is very kinetic. this alone makes it a very "filmable" book. As for the violence issue, it's COMIC BOOK VIOLENCE, people. No shocking thing at all. Plus, Warners owe we fans a true, serious and adult Batman movie, no stinkin' Burton-esque gothic dream, no Schumacher-esque glittering drag party. Give me ugly, crowded, dirty, comic-book like Gotham City. No gothic, cartoony delirium.
Who is the villain?? GO READ THE BOOK!! NO JOCKER!! NO SCARECROW!! GCPD IS THA VILLAIN!!! -
Harry,
Another Texan here; I live over in Houston and I coach HS football. Anyway, I have written you several times in regards to the rumor of Russell as Gordon, but with no response. In fact, it was I that gave that scoop first to both you and Garth at DH. He printed it, but you didn't. I run the JettD60's Batman: the Dark Knight website just for fun and I have gotten an aray of good sources. I have one who is my borther in law's brother who works for WB. He gave me the Russell scoop and I then decided to create my website. Give it a visit and I hope you can view me as a reliable source on B5. the adress is:

Thanks and give me an e-mail response if you can.

Tired of hearing how "great" the Kevin Smith "SL" script is...
by uberneuman
I read a copy of it some time ago, and it's just not that good.
It's okay, but plays like a big-budget Lois & Clark, plus treads over ground covered by the past Superman movies...
I hope they make the film and it blows up in there face. People have spoken out about it, but Warner Bros. is so damn sure they know what there doing. I'm gonna laugh my butt off, like I did with
Godzilla..... -
I too have heard the rumor of Ewan McGreggor playing scarecrow, but i'd have to believe that heck will freeze over looooooong before McGreggor ever attaches his name to a Batman film. First off, he despises all Hollywood big budget action movies (but who wouldn't make an exception for Star Wars?)
plus it would be a huge risk and and absolutley kill his rebel anti-Hollywood image....uhh...that's all i have to say for now. -
Someone please tell me the draft of the Superman Lives! screenplay on Drew's Script-O-Rama site isn't really the Kevin Smith script.
It reads like something he slapped together the night before it was due. -
and succeed? Look at Star Wars. Classic story, lots of characters, a grand vision. Plus, all the merchandising. Why does all this work for Star Wars? Because it's epic with a coherent story with interesting characters.
Why don't other studios try to duplicate this? Well, I got a suggestion. The epic story called Kingdom Come can be made into a series of movies. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and a lot other heroes are in it. Much like having Luke, Leia, Han, etc.
in a story that carries a legendary tone. Think of the special effects that will used along with a real story.
Forget about making a Batman or Superman movie. Kingdom Come is WB's answer to Star Wars! And think of all the Kingdom Come licensing in toys and stuff!
-
Okay, I've read the supposed Kevin Smith script, and my comments are: where's all that cool dialogue he talks about. Please not, I love the Jersey Trilogy, and I can't wait for Dogma. I was at Vulgarathon '98. Last summer, my friend's car stalled outside View Askew, and we called AAA for the View Askew offices (I almost stepped on the cat). But while most of the script works, what about this excerpt: Supes is talking to the Eradicator and says "No, no -- we're staying here and fighting Brainiac. I don't care if I really die this time." That is just a poor line of dialogue. And after Supes death, Batman holds a televised report from the Batcave? Um, security anyone? Still, I'd rather see Smith's script instead of the crap Jon Peters/Tim Burton are making.
-
Tom Skerrit would make a great Gordon. He is just about the right age. Maybe too old for Year One.
Batman: Kurt Russell, Russell Crow,Cline Eastwood (Dark Knight Returns)
Sgt. Bullock: John Goodman
Harley: Lori Petty
I like Golblum as Man-Bat
McGregor would be a good scarecrow but maybe the movie would be better with just some corrupt city government problems, dirty cops and the like
Keep the action to the streets. Give him a real case to solve. The best parts of the early movies were him on the street at night beating up guys and driving the car around spying on the penguin.
Oh lets just blow all of this and move on to Nightwing and Bludhaven. -
I just saw Falling Down for the forst time the other day -- and I must say that the horn-rimmed glasses work on Michael Douglas very well. I could see him as the younger Lt. Gordan any day.
Just get David Fincher to direct like he did in Seven, and give me a good 'ol serial killer mystery during Bat's Year One. I'll be there in line opening night! -
Harry, your opinion is usually dead on target, but I don't see how you can like that Kevin Smith Superman Lives script. I mean, the script has all kinds of out of context comments from aliens, supervillains actually acting surprised when Superman thwarting attacks on public figures in Metropolis of all places, and Lois Lane physically attacking Lex Luthor for no reason at all. If not out of character for her, it's at least a gross exaggeration. And Superman isn't portrayed with any kind of class at all; he's some sort of smart-aleck jokester who can't even manage a decent quip. Chris Reeves' interpretations of Superman and Clark may not be exactly perfect for a movie today, but something close to that is exactly what a good Superman movie needs. The absolute only non-classical Superman element that this movie needs(besides the death, of course) is the marriage of Lois and Clark. And none of that new costume BS!
Uh, other than that, you're dead-on about Batman, and everything else on your site, of course. -
Jeez! When did Tim Burton fall out of favor with everyone? Don't you trust him to make a good Superman? When has he stepped wrong before? Mars Attacks? Maybe, but surely he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Tell me you wouldn't love to see a Burton-crafted Metropolis. Of course, if this means scrapping the Sleepy Hollow flick, then screw it!!!
-
I must add my name to the many above who have stated that they don't like the Kevin Smith script. Before seeing the above comments I thought perhaps it was just my distaste for Smith's writing, since both Mallrats and Chasing Amy made me squirm (Clerks was pretty funny). But to me, the Superman Lives draft on Script-o-rama is just mediocre fan fiction. There are a ridiculous amount of cornball speeches and a lot of really lame, intrusive jokes. There isn't a whole lot of imagination involved in the story, and the action scenes are cheesy. Regardless of whether these things bother you or not, I just don't see how Smith could have ever thought that Tim Burton would really take a script with a main character named "The Eradicator" and several uses of the word "morph" and film it as is. Has he ever seen a Burton film?
Brainiac's skull ship and the funeral scene would make good imagery for a Burton film, but other than that the script is no higher than Judge Dredd level of quality.
I would also like to add that I can not understand how anyone could take Michael Keaton seriously delivering that cornball speech. Sure, the Michael Keaton Batman isn't the definitive Batman, but I'm glad that he's not into delivering patriotic speeches on TV.
-
After recently reading now legendary Superman Lives script, I must admit to feeling disappointed.
Kevin Smith is a genius, a new god amongst directors, however his script is characterless and flat.
I think with the right person tweaking it, it could be made into a sound movie, especially at the hands of someone like Burton, or even Jon Woo, (Now that would be something)
Nic Cage IS the right person to play the part, but only once it has been fleshed out.
So there you go, just my Humble little UK opinion. It may not count for much but it's all Ive got.
Mark -
hey,
even if it's not a YEAR ONE film, and kurt russell takes over for hingle, who cares?
no one seemed to mind that joel schumacher (who should never work again) put tommy lee jones in the harvey dent part, when billy dee williams played dent in the first film...so, it doesn't matter if a younger guy takes over for a older guy, when a white guy has already replaced a black guy....so, if schumacher is in charge, don't expect a year one film, expect for russell to be gordon, and you're just supposed to accept that gordon is younger now, like the two face thing... -
I think that they should bring back Burton, and forget that the third and fourth movies ever existed. It may be interesting to go to the beginning of the story, but there are so many worthwhile characters that were ruined, in my opinion, by off casting (Poison Ivy, Batgirl, Two Face). In the comics, there is more than one Joker. Why not create another one with a Harley Quinn? But if we are going to new villians, how about Tom Petty as the Mad Hatter? ha ha
-
What's up with people who like this script.. I'm not going to comment on it after reading the other negitive comments on it. They're right on the money!!! Bad dialogue, plot, poor use of bad guys (DOOMSDAY) come on!!!????
Well I try to forget about that crap, myself.. I'll say this get rid of Nick Cage (CITY OF ANGELS??? WHY??? REPRESS) Tim Burton!!!! (NO PASTELS B&W)
Sandra Bullick AKA Lois... NO! No Chris Rock either! Mike Bay directs, Good actress plays Lois... (I'd like Julia Roberts or Teri Hacther... some one good!) Get a almost unknown if they want for supes... Just let him be in shape, tall, SUPER!( hey does Antonio Sabato JR. know how to act.. Well someone who knows more actors than I can come up with while watching xena right now... Well that's all for now Thanks for hearing me out... Oh one more thing, Let's follow the comic book if possible!!!! -
I know this may sound totally weird but how about using Russell Crowe (LA Confidential)for the next Batman project. Opinions?
-
Let me start by saying that I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. Hell, I even liked Mallrats. But how many of you have actually read the Superman script? Is that a resounding zero I hear? I understand it's impossible to get a hold of, and we are all just hoping and assuming that Kevin Smith did a good job on it. Quit being sycophants (insane elephant?) and assuming that Kevin Smith did a good job because he's a comic fan, and wait for proof.
-
Spiderman should be made
Superman should not be made
Hulk should be made as long as the first 50 minutes are about who he is and why he became the Hulk
Same with the FF
Make a dark Ghost Rider
Don't make Batman 5, please -
Just general ramblings here...
Do you think that in some alternate universe, Batman Forever came out, directed by Tim, "yeah, insane clowns everywhere!" Burton, starring Michael Keaton as Batman, Billy Dee Williams as Two Face, and Robin Williams as the Riddler? Better question, how bad do you think this film did in the alternate universe? -
Forget Scarecrow, no great horror actors left to play him, Harley Quinn ... Who? The villains in the next batflick should be Rhas Al Ghul played by Sean Connery and Talia played by Julia Roberts. Bats should chase him all over the world, fall in love with Talia and in the films climax go mano a mano with a rejuvenated Rhas fresh from a dip in the Lazarus pit. As for Commissioner Gordon, how about... Ed Harris? It doesn't usually matter who's in the Batsuit but it would in this film, so ya gotta get a real actor... hmmmmm.... I'll let you know when i can think of one.
-
I've been asked "What's the Batman Year One" that people have been talking about?" - originally a 4 issue comic in '86-87, and later a single volume graphic novel, Batman Year One tells the story about Bruce Wayne's first time on the streets of Gotham as a crime fighter. The story also tells the tale of Lt. Jimmy Gordon's welcome to Gotham and corruption in the force. It's an amazing miniseries written by Frank Miller, illustrated by Dave Mazzucchelli and Richard Lewis. The graphic novel format is easier to find than the original 4 issues. (Major bookstores or comic shops)

Gripe one: Why is Warner Bros. even LOOKING for someone else to take over the Dark Cowl!? There was absolutely nothing wrong with Clooneys BATMAN. Nor, Kilmers for that matter! The Problem is in the asshole directing of Joel Shumacher! Am I the only one that Sees THIS!?! Shumacher and his light/comedic approach to the Dark Knight franchise is a STARK contrast to the dim gritty approach that Burton brought to the masses, and unbelievably, made Michael Keaton a star! Now Shumacher is butchering the name of BATMAN and ruining the career of anyone , and I DO mean ANYONE that dons the cape and cowl! Clooney's the best BRUCE Wayne of the litter. And has the charm and macho charisma for the DARK KNIGHT that even VAl (Pretty Boy) Kilmer could'nt pull off!
As for Superman. God help him, for what Nick Cgae is gonna do to the role. Don't get me wrong! Cage is one of the greatest ctors of the modern era.. but he's no SUPERMAN. The characther deserves soo much more than powerful acting behind it.. it deserves the handsome rugged school boy looks, and powerful build that.. and I know the maj. of U hate to admit, Dean Cain brought to the small screen. How many of U realize that the god awful Lois n Clark series was in danger of being canned after season one.. but a ground swell of WOMEN watchers kept the thing alive for another four seasons!? Translate THAT, (The female ticket power) with the millions of comic book watchers who'll flock to the theaters to see it just because it's SUPERMAN.. not to even mention the KIDS.. and U won't have to worry about Box office Drawing power.. as Warner Bros is obviously wanting 2 do! It has always been MY position to just transfer the franchise to the big screen much like Star Trek, X-Files, and soon to happen Highlander series is doing! And SUPES by far, has a much larger fan base! Damned I need to work for Warners.. or Hollywood! As for Burton, I personally don't see his DARK style befitting of Superman.. although perfect for the dark knight! But granted he does do good work. So, we will see. Hope this gets to SOMEBODY's hnads over at Warners. Tip 4 ya!! Listen to the people who buy the product. THEY can tell ya what they'll pay money to go see! Who wants CXourtney Cox as Lois Lane.. over the woman who was made for the role... Terri Hatcher!? Not me. -
Okay, his geniusness Kevin Smith says that he has great dialogue for Superman Lives. I have decided that the script at drew's is not his script. nor will i belive that it is his script until kevin smith tells my to my face that it is THE SCRIPT.
-
The next batman movie should be a year one story. It should start with Warner bros apologize for giving us crappy Batman movies (especially the last two) and they have the obligation of not killing any villains. i also think that Warner shold think about making anew live-action tv. series for bats, it would rock. as for Superman, I've been waiting for a superman movie ever since I first read the death of Superman storyline. If it is never produced I'll have wasted lots of cash buying every magazine with an article about the movie.
And finnaly I have a question, Why in every Dc comics Super-heroes movie do they begin with the character being in his 30, doesn't it in some way dimunish the livespan of the franchise? -
Tim Burton is the greatest director ever!He would make one helluva Superman movie. As for the costume,a suit made out of spandex would look so campy(Lois&Clark)but a suit that was molded would look like Superman lives in the 90's.
-
if i were in charge, it would be tim burton with the smith script (slightly revised by kevin smith), and star ben affleck as superman, cameron diaz or sandra bullock as lois lane, jerry o'connel as jimmy olsen, and kevin spacey as lex luthor. and doomsday would have a better and bigger part in the movie.
-
I know most of y'all are against Scarecrow, but what do you think about the following casting call?
Steve Buscemi as Scarecrow
Nick Cage as Mad Hatter
Elizabeth Shue as Harley Quinn
and just for kicks...
Bruce Cambell as the Dark Knight
whadda ya think??? -
remone- george clooney was the worst batman i have ever seen. adam west would have done better. batman does not need a permanent smirk on his face.
as for schumacher's directing, however, i totally agree. the man is a complete and total moron. if he has anything to do with writing the scripts for these things (correct me on this, guys) he should be shot. how many cliches about ice can you possibly put into a movie? with credits like 'the wiz' and 'car wash' under his writing belt, you can almost hear WB execs getting dumber.
and if tim burton does superman, i don't think it will nessecarily be pitifully dark, just more realistic, and less like a really bad cartoon (i hope schumacher is reading this). -
I have called my topic SUPERMAN 2000 because I believe it will take at
least until then to resolve the MAN OF STEEL/NICOLAS CAGE/TIM BURTON/KEVIN SMITH fiasco!
I would firstly like to say, that I am a big fan of all the above mentioned gentlemen. Superman is the first and still greatest superhero no matter how many VIOLENT vigilantes from hell pop up, and The Man of Steel should be treated with the highest respect by everyone, Warner Brothers, DC and of course the fans.
Nicolas Cage is a brilliant actor, he would make a very entertaining Clark Kent, but as Superman? Mr. Cage is Italian-American, there is nothing with that in itself, but Superman is NOT Italian-American. It would be like casting Jackie Chan as Batman or Naomi Campbell as Wonder Woman! It's just not done!
Tim Burton is a wonderful director, but he dwells in the dark.
That's why he was so perfect for Batman, but Superman is the other side of the coin, it just wouldn't work.
Kevin Smith's script should still be the starting point to the film.
Kevin understands comic books - he writes them, he dwells in them.
WB has to be aware of this.
I have my dream cast and the perfect team to produce and direct, and I will be sharing this with as many SUPERMAN followers as I can, in the near future.
Thanx 4 your time, RonnyRon. -
I hadn't given "Batman 5" much thought until now, I've been busy campaigning for Superman.
My thoughts are, bring Tim Burton back! his Batman movies worked, take him OFF the set of Superman and put him to work where he belongs - BATMAN.
Bring Michael Keaton back, if not, then at least bring back Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale and have her husband Alec Baldwin put the BAT costume on. He's a great voice and, he would make the BEST Bruce Wayne. That's something many people didn't think about, who would portray the suave, handsome millionaire playboy.
NOT Keaton, NOT Kilmer and NOT Clooney, ladies and gentlemen I give you........ALEC BALDWIN!
Just go and rent The Shadow at your local video store and gaze upon him in his tuxedo! He IS Bruce Wayne!
Thank you to all the Superman and Batman who are hanging in there and voicing their collective disconnect.
RonnyRon, Gold Coast, Australia.
