Denny Crane!!!! The Very Last PRACTICE Ever!!

Published at:  May 16, 2004 9:47:24 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

"Denny Crane cannot have sicko friends! You're an evildoer!"

“The Practice,” once a great show about lawyers who defend psychotics and drug dealers, is kinda great again. It also ends tonight, to be replaced by “Practice II” or “Denny Crane!” or "Fleet Street" or whatever ABC decides to call David Kelley’s new Spader-centric spinoff.

End of last season, a lot of us couldn’t care less about “The Practice.” Too many friends of Bobby, Lindsay and Eleanor on trial for murder. Too many cases of the “Law & Order”-type ripped-from-the-headlines variety.

This season, the married couple and their marrieds woes vanished, and we got crazy lawyer James Spader, and Rhona Mitra, and William Shatner, as a lawyer perhaps crazier than Spader’s.

Tonight Bobby Donnell's back. And I even like the Jimmy and Big Pussy in the old neighborhood storyline. Jimmy's secretary hands out baseball bats!

Bandwidth. Predictions. Reactions.

10 p.m. Sunday. ABC.

    Denny Crane

    by playhouse

Denny Crane carries on the proud tradition of David E. Kelley's other eccentric lawyer John Cage. Peter MacNichol's performance was outstanding and memorable. I tell ya, though, it's damn entertaining to watch William Shatner in this part. Quite a surprise, as a matter of fact.

  • Speaking of fine pieces of ass, I watched that pretentious piece of shit Strip Search on HBO. I hate the Patriot Act and the Department of Fatherland Security as much as anyone, but that show was lame, except for a lot of scenes of Maggie Gylenhaal naked! I know, it's supposed to be "degrading", but she's so goddamned cute, I couldn't help but get a chubby. Great natural tits, pretty good ass for a white chick and a genuine bush instead of a fucking landing strip. That's the problem: This movie was intended as liberal agitprop and had me saying "More BUSH!". Sydney Lumet should be ashamed.

    Secretary

If you like Spader and love Maggie Gylenhaal, you just have to see this movie. In fact, I think it is pretty much what got Spader on the Practice in the first place. All through this season I wondered if Spader would eventually give Rhona Mitra's character a spanking. And speaking of Rhona, don't you think she'd have made a LOT better Helen in "Troy" than the rather plain woman picked to play? How can her face launch a thousand ships when Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom both are frankly prettier than her? Rhona, on the other hand, she is worthy to play the woman who a war was fought over.

Man, this couldn't have ended any worse..

I really dug this show and even watch reruns every day of the F/X channel, but these last few episodes featured not an inkling of what became a good series... Denny Crane??? The first time Shatner appeared, I knew how the character would be played; over the top... I mean, the main cast appeared like in maybe 15% of this final episode... Bobby appears in like 87 seconds of the final episode and I'm supposed to give a shit? I dunno... Rhona Mitra is hot as hell though and I wish she'd get more work.. When does Highwaymen hit DVD??

Fleet Street floogie with a floy floy

    by napoleon park

I enjoyed the finale. Kelley admits "The Practice" really ended a year ago and this year was basically one long set-up for the spin-off, but I think they did a good job of tying up Eugene and Jimmy's stories. Camryn Manheim is rumored to be in negotiations to play Ellenor Frutt in a sit-com spin-off in which she's a college professor somewhere not Boston. Jamie (Jessica "chipmonk cheeks" Capshaw is an odd fit at Berlutti's new firm, but she was also rumored to be going to the Spader show at one time. Looks that that fell through, or just hasn't been worked out yet. I'm sure Fleet Street will have a larger ensemble than the four actors named in the commercial, but Spader, Shatner, Mitra and that sexy wench, Lake something, are a good start. I'm hoping they keep DeMornay and that Kevin Spacey look-alike guy that was on a few episodes back. I wouldn't mind seeing more of Jimmy Berlutti's neighbor-hood firm either; it was like they set up a whole 'nother spin-off where none exists. "Fleet Street" will take time to grow on me as a title, but I'm so glad they didn't go with "Practice II; Electric Bugaloo". Nice seeing Eugene on the bench, if only for the brief gag of having Alan Shore be his first case. And I loved the ending, with Bobby sitting alone, crying, realizing The Practice he founded was now officially disbanded. - Denny Crane! (Oh, and I can't believe how long it took me to realize that Cage & Fish was a pun.)

This show could give birth to a spin off for every day of the week right now.

    I liked it, but...

    by symphy

... I do hope Fleet Street doesn't have the one glaring, stupidly written, out-of-nowhere anti-bush line each episode like the Practice did ALL YEAR. We watch it with friends and every Sunday this entire season, there was one bizarre out of place anti-Bush line EVERY SINGLE SHOW, like the writers were required in their contracts to fit one in. It just takes you out of the show and pisses you off, even if you agree with the comment.

I never saw a single episode before this season. The only reason why I started watching was because Shatner was going to be on it. I really believe that "Denny Crane" is the character he was born to play. He should be thanking David E. Kelley for the rest of his life.

    Denny Crane!!!

Bill Shatner, you're our only hope!

    by silver shamrock

He actually made that show watchable for me. With all the self important types I've seen on that show, Bill carved out a personality and delivery that transcends the stale genre that is the Lawyer Show. He just owns every scene he's in. Spader is great as well. Looking forward to Fleet Street.

    Never watched 'til this season

    by donnadarko

I'm another one who never paid attention to Lara Flynn anorexic Boyle and the other guy with dark hair who I think was engaged to Julia Roberts. I liked the fat chick (Carmyn something or other) punching out Rebecca too. James Spader made me change the channel after my Vincent D'Onofrio fix 9-10 on NBC. I love his 'morally-ambiguous' and fucked up character and Shatner is just the cherry on the sundae. Kelly had better give these characters something other than his bland Ally McBeal style writing, and make them fun and sleazy and totally fucked so they are interesting to watch! Sunday Nights - LO:CI (sorry, I don't jerk off over Jeniffer G.). Fleet Street, Cirque du Soleil and Farscape. PERFECT!
