Another fan is bitten... erm... I mean smitten with SHAUN OF THE DEAD!!!

Published at:  May 13, 2004 4:36:12 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an enthusiastic ("this movie will kick your fucking scrotum inside you. it's awesome.") review of the wonderful SHAUN OF THE DEAD from a recent Kansas City test screening. You folks are not ready for this movie. Hopefully Focus Features will release this bad boy in the US soon and take advantage of all the buzz this thing is picking up... I heard a recent NYC test screening of SHAUN went through the roof. Beware of spoilers below!!! "We're not saying the zedword!!!" Ha! Simon Pegg and Nick Frost already own all your asses and you don't even know it yet! I can't wait for you folks to see this bloody movie!!! Damn you lucky UKers!!!

what's up harry?

There are a few times in peoples's lives when a movie rocks their
world up and down. Shaun of the Dead is definitly one of those movies
that makes you have a better day because you know the characters in
the movie have a really shit-pissy day.

So I am in Kansas city with a friend and we roll up to the
theater all hyped to see this movie we have been hearing soo much
about. we end up getting to the movie about two hours before start
time....(what, we had nothing else to do.) the people let us in and
everyone who has to pass through the door gets a metal detactor waved
up and down their body in case someone brings in a bombcamera. the
audience as a whole was really mixed. all races and ages were in
attendance. most of the audience did not know a single thing about
the movie. they were in for a surprise. i personally sat 5 rows up
in the center.

so the movie begins and the opening titles are great. it
depicts normal day life and people waling in their normal routine as
if they were zombies doing the same thing over and over again. then
we get the character introductions which are the survivors, which are
simon pegg (shaun), nick frost (ed), kate ashfield (liz), dylan moran
(david), Lucy Davis (Dianne), Bill Nighy (Philip), Penelope Wilton
(Barbara). All these actors/actressess are wonderful in this movie.

we see that shaun has a girlfriend that he is fucking things up
with by him being a total loveable lazy asshole; and his best friend,
ed, who is a fat drug dealing likeable funny man. Signs of zombie
like behavior pop up after shaun's girl dumps him. finally shaun and
ed figure out there our zombies after they throw what they think is
a drunk chick on a sharp pole sticking out if the ground and she
gets back up tand tries to eat them.

then we follow shaun and ed rescuing shaun's parents and
girlfriend and her friends. there are many great sequences of head
bashing and blood spewing going on in this part of the movie. one
wonderful memorable scene was where shaun and ed were throwing record
albums at zombies and they were fighting with each other on which
album to throw. also running over zombies in a jaguar is always a
plus for any movie. holy shit, if only 13 going on 30 had some
zombies being run over by cars.

then we arrive to the plan of setting up shop at the trusty old bar
the winchester. we start to see david become a real pain in the royal
ass. more and more zombies are trying to get in and the owner of the
bar turns into a zombie and tries to eat everyone and as a result
shaun gets a throwing dart stuck in his skull by acciddent. funny ass
shit.

i am going to leave yall with that, because i do not want to spoil
the ending for any of yall. but the ending is perfection. this movie
is pretty much perfection. there are a lot of guy richie type shots
in this movie. if you could compare this to any film, it would have
to be a cross breed between night of the living dead, the big
lebowski, and snatch. i love that the zombies walk like the orignal
normal zombies do, which is not flash speed fast. this movie has
original story, great physical comedy, many laugh out loud scenes, and
a couple dramatic clips. this movie will kick your fucking scrotum
inside you. it's awesome. the audience responded well to it and
cheered and clapped in several scenes and at the end gave it a round
of applause.

oh yah, and the gore is wonderful. it just keeps on coming,
especially when david gets eaten by zombies ripping his stomache open
and eatingall the gooey insides. this definitly a date movie and
definitly a movie you want to bring your third cousin to. watch out
for a couple of cameos and movie references.

when this movie is released, you will see it andthen see it
again, and again. you just have to ask yourself..W.W.B.C.D. (what
would bruce campbell do?)

call me dvd4040! thank you!

peace and collard greens!

    SotD is hilarious

    by irishjoe

Some times the movies that Harry et al recommend on this site can be weighed down by the heavy burden of expectation that you carry in with you but Shaun of the Dead easily matches then exceeds your expectations. Pegg and Edgar Wright know how to write and score comedy, but they also show a good grasp of cool horror beats and tough action scenes.I saw this a couple of weeks ago in Ireland and my friends and I are continually quoting from it.It is an instant fan geek cult classic, whatever that is.All i know any fan worth their salt will own this dvd and stash it beside their Dog Soldiers and Wickerman DVDs as cool British horror/humour. Also I got to say it is nice to get a novie before you guys in the US.I dont begrudge you that but movie companies really drop the ball scheduling movies way after their US release.Hellboy aint coming for months and I already ordered the Club Dread US DVD and it hasnt even been out theatrically here. All the great internet buzz that was built up has been lost for these movies.

Honestly. Well written, some sentences were even partially coherent. Although, a zombie movie doesn't need a whole lot of intricacies I guess. Hope it makes it over here soon.

    I was there, man!

    by the real mccoy

Yeah, I live near Kansas City and was fortunate enough to be able to see it. Although I was anticipating watching the film, I never really bought into the hype this site was generating for the film. I mean, how can a film be that damn good? Well, after seeing Shaun of the Dead, I've realized a film can be that damn good. Anyway, I could praise the movie up and down but I think everybody gets the idea.***The Kansas City Screening was pretty interesting due to the fact that there was a disproportiate share of older people there. And I mean older. I was in line about an hour and a half before the film started. In front of me were about five women over the age of 45 or 50. So when the reviewer mentioned how the audience was mixed, he wasn't kidding. Yeah, and everybody who showed up to the screening should post here.

So just where the Hell can I see this?

    by led gopher

I live in Michigan, west Michigan near Grand Rapids. I have been looking, but I can't find anything about where I can see this movie, in my area. Anyone know if there is a site online that actually carries info about US showtimes for this particular film? I checked Moviefone.com and they didn't even have it in their database.
What gives? Am I gonna just have to wait for the DVD and pray a local rental place carries a copy?

Hate to break it to you, brother, but I don't think you're going to be seeing this anytime soon. Unless, of course, you have no qualms about bootleggers and pirates. Those of us who saw the film in Kansas City were just lucky. A woman spoke before the screening and told us we were one of the first American audiences to see the film. I was also told that there currently was no release date attached to the film but there was a Universal logo so they do have an American distributor. The last I heard, October was a possible release date. We all filled out a questionaire and I sort of got the impression that the company was testing whether any scenes needed to be cut before release

What a killer movie (oun intended). Shaun of the Dead is the most fun flick I've seen in a while. Funny, scary, suspensful, dramatic, great dialog, dusgusting gore, and the best use of Queen's music in a mover EVER! The last scene is really the best. I hope this gets a decent release here in the US, 'cause eveyone needs to see this. Screw the remake of Dawn of the Dead, this kicks the crap out it. I liked it even more than Bubba Ho-Tep. Shaun of the Dead is a true cult-classic.

I saw it and while its pretty enjoyable on the whole, there are plenty of crap bits in it - especially at the end. The laughs dry up and it a has a stab at being serious with some really AWFUL dialoue. That whole shit about whether to kill his Mum or not went on forever. All i'm saying is tone down those expectations kids.

Mike myers, this is how you use a queen song.

    by logansden

Shaun of the dead.......where to start? How about with "THE" ultimate opening line (and one which will surely enter the national vocabulary in the UK for buying a round of drinks)or the best use of a Queen song ever. Its got something for everyone to relate to, be you a film buff trying to spot references (and their are some great ones. Evil dead, night of the living dead etc.) a fan of british alternative comedy/actors (pretty much got appearances from the entire cast of both spaced and black books, alas no Bill Bailey)or those just out to see a kick ass movie. Bit of a let down to hear about the delayed U.S. release date, they got you (ugh) love actually pretty sharpish didnt they? (someone doesn't like you) The beauty of this film is that its a genuinely good film about genuinely believable characters. Every man whose ever had a "GROW UP OR GET OUT" girlfriend can relate to Simon pegg's shaun. As for Nick frosts Ed....... if only Kevin smith could've got him for Mallrats. The epitome of men, laughs at farts, likes fast cars, sits around playing an X-box. And thats just the tip of the iceberg. top notch irish comedian Dylan (black books) moran is great as the dead pan straight. Do yourself a favour, if you cant see this film legally i implore you go against the grain and get a bootleg. they are availiable. their floating around the UK in droves and have been for sometime. Ignore the MILK MAID. See this movie. If you are sick of spoilt basterd teenage bullshit psycho thrillers passing themselves of as horror this movies just for you. Cracking dialogue, brilliant casting. the most undead fun since Bruce campbell uttererd those immortal words. "GROOVY"

    Shaun of the Dead

    by sd canis

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Shaun of the Dead I must say I prefer the team's work on Spaced. Maybe it's the lack of Jessica Stevensons input or because they are also using a lot more emotional and scary scenes (which worked). SotD was a very funny film but I'd say Spaced was consistantly hilarious.

My friends don't believe me that this movie exists. I tell them: "Hey guys there's this cool movie called Shaun of the dead coming out!" And they say, "Don't you mean Dawn of the dead?" At which point we get into a big arguement as to whether or not the movie exists. I think need newer friends............

    Shaun sucks other comedies ass

    by garlicwithbread

Not very often does a film come out that gets funnier the more times you watch it classics such as airplane 1 & 2 and austin powers, also 1 & 2, with many more to mention. Shaun of the dead is one of these. It is finally a good british film comedy that does not have some fop who likes LA hookers having a will they or won't they relationship crisis.

Shauns' only failure if it is a failure is that there are too many jokes, so many in fact that after watching this i concluded that there was about 10 traditional comedies worth of humour.

Watch it, beg for it or if you in the know release it on the other side of the pond - you will make crap loads of cash.
