In the Windy City' Want to meet George Romero, Jack Hill and... CAPONE'

Published at:  May 11, 2004 2:29:36 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a note from our main man in Chi-town, Capone. Sounds like a sweet event. All you lucky Chicago geeks enjoy!!!

Hey, all. Capone in Chicago here. The Windy City will be a heaven for geeks of all types this coming weekend with a couple of events scheduled. Last week, I wrote about the Buffy/Angel fan events taking place in the Chicago burbs. Now I've gotten word of another weekend festival that is a must-attend for all fans of exploitation and horror fans. Here are the details:

MOVIESIDE FILM FESTIVAL and mpshows.com Presents: George Romero & Jack Hill May 14-16 Biograph Theater (2433 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago)

Basically, it's one night with Jack Hill and his films; two nights with Romero. Check www.movieside.com for schedule details, but here are the highlights:

Friday, May 14 Jack Hill introduces SPIDER BABY, plus the short THE HOST. After the screening, Hill will be interviewed and do a Q&A, followed by screenings of SWITCHBLADE SISTERS and COFFY

Saturday, May 15 screening of ACNE by festival organizer Rusty Nails, plus the Misfits' video "Scream", directed by George Romero.

A screening of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD will be followed by a talk and Q&A with Romero. Following this will be yet another NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD screening introduced by Romero.

I've also just been told that Mark Borchardt (AMERICAN MOVIE) will be hanging around the theater around 11 pm just to update us on the latest goings on in his life.

Sunday, May 16 Screenings of DAY OF THE DEAD, THE CRAZIES and CREEPSHOW, with a Q&A with Romero after DAY OF THE DEAD. The organizers have also gathered a bunch of trailers of Romero's films and commercials he's directed. Those will be tossed in during the screenings.

I'll be on hand to introduce one or more of these films and just chat up all of the insane attendees. Again, check the movieside web site for exact times. There are also going to be a bunch of bands playing all three nights. It's going to be a madhouse. And the price is right. Something like $12 per day at the door or $25 for a festival pass.

See you there.

Capone

    Romero is God

    by pants malone

I can't wait to ask him when the new DEAD film is coming (like every other person over the last 20 years). But in all seriousness, I can't wait, and am glad Capone told me about this one. Otherwise it would have snuck right by me.

    Dead Reckoning Confirmed?

    by tobe_romero

    today from http://www.creature-corner.com/news4/may11deadreckoning.php3

    QUOTE
If all is true, then today is truly the day of the dead.

Zombies are in. That's as far as Hollywood is concerned. Dawn of the Dead's success helped. Before that, Resident Evil lent a guiding hand too. Lions Gate is at work on developing a script called Flight of the Dead. Screen Gems has Resident Evil: Apocalypse opening this Fall. And, as we all know, George A. Romero is in the early stages of a project entitled Diamond Dead while he attempts to stir up interesting in his fourth Dead film Dead Reckoning.

Well we've got a status report on both, actually.

Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Productions recently climbed aboard Diamond Dead to back up the rock 'n roll-themed project. Nothing new there. According to a source (who claims this has appeared in the trades too), however, Fox Searchlight has picked up Diamond Dead for development. Searchlight ushered 28 Days Later onto U.S. shores last year.

But here's the big rumor that I'm, at the moment, trying to confirm:

Fox has greenlit Dead Reckoning. That's what Horror-Web's "reliable source" has told them adding that location scouting is underway.

We've got a few contacts of our own within Fox's walls and we're just waiting for word from them on this. Keep checking this page, as it'll probably be updated very soon!

    and

also, over at http://dayofthedeadmovie.net , DJ says ...

"I just got this Email today from avery reliable source.

Just got off the phone with a VERY reliable source and am happy to announce [and pissed that our News/Rumors is down] that Romero's newest zombie movie has been given the green light - and we got the scoop!!

After word/rumors of this installment have floated around for how long, Fox gave the green light just today [5.10.04] and this 4th zombie/dead installment, still being called 'Dead Reconing' is now actively looking at locations for shooting. 'Reconing' is said to take place after the events of Day of the Dead.

George and several cast members from the original installments - Night of the Living Dead [Kyra Schon, Russ Streiner, and John Russo], Dawn of the Dead [Ken Foree, David Emge, Scott Reiniger, Sharon Ceccatti, and Clayton Hill], and Day of the Dead [Lori Cardille, Joe Pilato, Gary Klar, and Anthony DiLeo] - will also be at the Horrorfind Convention this August in Baltimore - can you smell a theme?"

there is a DAY OF THE DEAD remake being made

    by kid joker

I read right here on AICN a while back from Harry I think that there is a DAY OF THE DEAD remake being RUSHED INTO apparently - I hate it when people rush into making films. Byt the way - I'm inAustralia and DAWN OF THE DEAD [remake] isn't out yety (i know, it's gay) - is it worth seeing? i've seen those clips on that kidjokerreview.cjb.net website and it dsoesn't even look like a HORROR - more an action/thriller.

Hey, George! Can't you come to the UK?

    by charlie & tex

Seriously, it'd be cool if Romero could come over here, as he has a legion of fans in the UK.

Speaking personally, it would be nice to meet him as we has the pleasure of playing a couple of zombies in that love-letter to Mr Romero, Shaun of the Dead.

Had it, but has he really lost it?

    by duanejones

hope not, but like m. chainsaw, i scarcely relish the prospect of dead IV. honestly, as bad as his recent work has been (i actually sorta like the first half of _bruiser_, and it's well-directed, generally...yet...), i see much more potential for a comeback in a darkly-comic musical than another attempt to revive the dead franchise, ESPECIALLY if it's this lame "beyond thunderdome" zombie-killer-car scenario discussed here a while back. george, you made your bones with _night_ and _dawn_, began seriously losoing it with _day_...for the love of g-d, make _diamond dead_, make _turn of the screw_, make the olsen twins in a remake of _beyond the green door, times two_...ANYTHING but _dead wreckoning_!!!!

    Romero in Chicago!

    by chuck_schick

I bought tickets for Sunday...Day of the Dead, Crazies and Creepshow. Can't wait! Expect to see the geeks out in full force here in Chicago. And it's at the Biograph! Hopefully Dillinger's zombie will make an appearance. My parent's took me to see Creepshow when I was 4 and I hid under the seats shaking and whimpering the whole time. Maybe I'll revert back to that experience and embarrass myself again.
