UPDATED!! Werner Herzog faces off with Nessie! Footage here!!!

Published at:  May 10, 2004 1:01:48 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts. Quint here with a little look at Werner Herzog's (yes, THAT Warner Herzog) next project, a documentary (fake? probably, but maybe not...) about the myth surrounding the Loch Ness monster called THE ENIGMA OF LOCH NESS. I grew up in California and got to spend one winter vacation up at Lake Tahoe, which is known for three things: Snow, gambling and Tahoe Tessie, its own local myth/water monster. As a child that wasn't a blackjack addict (like the adult currently typing this is), only two of those three things held any interest to me. Since then I've been in love with the mystery surrounding both Tahoe Tessie and the grandaddy of them all, the Loch Ness monster. So, is this for real or total bullshit? I'd guess by the footage found at the below site it's bullshit, but if it isn't then Holy shit! Check it out!

Hey Harry,

Have you seen this site? It seems Werner Herzog is trying to develop a Blair Witch- type of hype.

Look specially at the footage of the monster. My!!!!!! It's looks gorgeous!!!!! (QUINT NOTE: make sure to click on the video option at the top of the page) In fact being shot at Loch Nees it can pass for the real deal.
Check it out! You wont regret it.

The Spaniard

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here.

I've actually been tracking this one for a while. Zak Penn and I are friendly, and he told me about this when he was preparing to leave for Loch Ness. Werner Herzog is one of his life-long idols, and the idea of working on a documentary with him was one of Zak's dreams. By the time he came back, though, he had a completely different attitude about things. I know this guy who e-mailed us dismissed this as a hoax, but the dispute that's arisen between the filmmakers and some of the tragedy and chaos surrounding the film is no hoax at all. Far from it. I'm hoping I can get in touch with Zak soon to talk to him about this, and I've sort of been waiting to mention it until I could get him to go on the record about what he says was a very difficult and terrifying experience.

There's a lot more to this story than the above e-mail would suggest, and hopefully we'll have more about it for you soon.

That footage is as fake as it comes. Those people's response to the thing in the water is hilarious. Still might be a fun little docu-drama.

    It's bullshit

    by stanley spector

But that doesn't make Herzog any less of a genius. I love the fact that much of his career has been spent trying to demolish the line between "fiction" and "non-fiction" filmmaking, an effort to consolidate documentary and traditional narrative forms.

    I don't get it...

    by fabfunk

Why must we be left hanging as AICN "investigates" things? What's going on between Werner Herzog and the crew? What's going on between Zak Penn and Herzog? What's going on between Penn and the crew? And how does this Loch ness footage fit in to all this? Is all this "controversy" meant to suggest that Penn thought it was going to be a serious documentary and it isn't? Or is there really a Loch ness monster? I want the truth!!!!!!!!! And this stuff about Zak Penn helping to finance it... does he have that much cash?

    "...tragedy...?"

    by miracleman

I recommend that everyone here do some basic Internet research on the individual who is listed as "missing" and the individual who is listed as "dead" on that website, as well as investigative stories done on the film itself. It's all very interesting... I wonder why the filmmakers went through all this online tomfoolery in the first place.

"Look specially at the footage of the monster. My!!!!!! It's looks gorgeous!!!!!"

i can't decide what was more "gorgeous" - the incredibly convincing delivery of the "is that a shark?" line from the toolbox on deck, or the very apparent remains of a wake still dissipating in front of said shark. you'd think if those clowns couldn't go any more hi-tech than dragging a painted buoy through the water, they'd at least wait for the for the 1st take's wake to completely dissipate. the only myth involved here, is that some goober fancies himself a director.

    Definite hoax, see this story:

    by kcmosher

    http://www.paranormalnews.com/eyefriendly.asp?articleID=934

I wrote this one up after legendary monster hunter Loren Coleman dissed this as a fraud over on Paranormal News. Just a few minutes of research showed the connection between the 'crytozoologist' Karnow and Penn.

Moriarty: I know you may be trying to keep the cat in the bag for your buddy Penn, but the jig is definitely up. By using Karnow's real name on the website, they effectively outed the whole deal.

A better question is this: was Herzog a victim here? Was this an attempt by Penn and a film crew to shoot a comedy/documentary leading Herzog to believe he was capturing Nessie for a real film? THAT could cause no small amount of conflict, I think.

Is this real, though? Absolutely, positively not.

    by allmightytallest

    Two reasons:

    1. His "Nosferatu" remake

    2. He dealt with Kinski for all those years. That has to count for something.

    right on

    by horseloverfat723

Under normal circumstances for a film with this subject matter, I can't say I'd give it the time of day, but DUDE---it's Werner frikkin' Herzog, the man behind Aguirre the Wrath of God. So, it's without a doubt a must see occasion.

didn't even know Herzog was still alive

    by blacklist

Guess that makes sense though. The Oberhausen statement was only what twenty years ago? Petersen's the only one of them you really hear about in any great length nowadays. Anyway this sounds fantastic and I'll be looking out for it.
