Munchausen watches Emmerich's vision of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW!
Hey folks, Harry here... Fox sent me the "Limited Edition" dvd for INDEPENDENCE DAY today. There's not really anything new on it, save for a micro-glimpse of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW - of about 5 minutes of behind the scenes stuff - Completely not worth checking out. You'll be seeing everything on the preview on websites and on Entertainment Tonight in the coming weeks anyways - and there's nothing there that really makes you go, "HOLY SHIT" the way that most recent trailer does. I'm looking forward to this one... nobody destroys the world with more beautiful mayhem than Roland Emmerich. He was definitely a "card board box" kid growing up. You know, the kid that pretends cardboard boxes are cities for him to destroy, set afire, stomp, destroy with the water hose... However, the water hose he wields now... COOL!
Hey Harry.
Long time reader first time writer and so on.
I´ve just seen "The Day After Tomorrow" and since you don´t have ane reviews, I thought I´d give you one.
I went in really wanting to like this one. I´m not a big Emmerich fan. Godzilla and The Patriot both sucked. I kinda liked Independence day and really dug Universal Soldier.
I won´t get into the plot, because I guess everyone already knows what´s going on.
Positive things first:
The CGI in the film is fantastic. Some of the pictures in the film look like art work. Really beautiful.
The acting is ok. It´s always good to see Dennis Quaid, and Gyllenhal plays the shy look once again and it works. All the supporting actors also do a good job. The film also has some great one liners.
The negative things:
When the shit hits the fan and we think the whole world is fucked, we don´t see a lot of it. We see L.A. And New York get smashed, but that´s it. Then we see a lot of snow, but no more smashing. That really ruined it for me. I´m european and had hoped to see The Eiffel tower or something like that get ripped apart. But no. Emmerich concentrates on those 2 cities and for a disaster movie in the year of 2004 that´s not much.
It also seems that Emmerich tries to make this one a Character driven drama. But I never felt anything for anybody. Gyllenhal and his nerd posse hide out in N Y public library and they just wait for Daddy Quaid to come rescue them. There´s some wolves that mess with them but that´s it. I never got to know any of the characters so I didn´t care if they lived og died. I missed the feeling from the old disaster movies in the seventies. An extra 30 minutes (its 124 minutes) of character development had made my day.
In conclusion: It could have been a lot worse. They could have asked Stephen Sommers to direct it. I´m just joking. NO I´m not. Van Helsing sucks! Buy a ticket and go see it. It´s worth the dollars and you have to see it on a big screen.
Munchausen.

This is not a fucking review. I could have written it based on the minimal idiotic references in it.

I mean, c'mon, Harry. Concede that it sucks and maybe I'll send you a birthday card this year.

And he uses the verb "dig" as a synonym for "like". Thank you, that was all I needed to know about that "person", and I stopped reading right there and then. I suspect he praised Punisher, Charlie's Angels and Van Helsing later on.

... and it's called Last Days of Planet Earth. It is a japanese film with a lot of impressive special effects and a really great story where you actually care for the characters. don't bother to waste your money with that Roland Emmerich crap

by frankdrebin
Sounds like the movie is nothing but images of recognizable monuments frozen over. The real disaster would be billions rioting, then starving, from crop failures and declining fish populations. But I guess those images wouldn't be as pretty as an ice-encased Statue Of Liberty.

on apple.com trailer page for the second "Day after tomorroiw" trailer - there's a big picture of the Opera House getting fucked up by a tidal wave - from what I'm hearing that's not even in the fucken movie! besides - what are all you fat 30 year old script-downloading living with your mom in the basment NERDS getting pissed about how only the U.S get's destroyed? big deal - it's cool any way. i couldn't give a shit about the rest of the world frankly - it's more fun to watch BIG MONUMENTS of the world get destroyed with cool CGI than any 3rd world country. however - when i'm older and a filmmaker - i will have a go at a disaster flick and include a lot of things this movie apparently leaves out because the less nobby ones of you former posters actually have a few good points.

It really would be the end of the world for you whiny bitches if a tornedo ripped through Hollywood as it does in the trailer for this movie. No more movies! No more of the directors you love to hate! No more axes to grind! What would you do with your empty lives? Lighten up will ya! Movies like this and geniuses like Stephen Sommers are the only worthwhile thing to come out the good old US of A. Apart from war-mongering, baiting the entire Arab world and trying to bring the world to a hasty end, Movies are your one saving grace. It isn't your large stock-pile OF NUKES, or the warm sincerity of your Bush that endears you to the rest of the world, it's the likes of Stephen Segal and Bruce Willis; these are your true ambassadors. So stop burning your own flag and get in touch with that 9 year old boy - after he's done suing Michael Jackson that is.

Roland Emmerich makes cheesy movies period. I haven't liked any of his so-called fact based films and probably will dislike this load of dreck. I've got his first movie The Noah's Ark Principle on dvd and it's also a bomb. Further more there appears to be similarities between DAT and NAP, if the trailer is anything to go by. Both feature a high-tech space lab, except in the Noah's Ark flick the hich-tech research station is in charge of global weather forecasts and climate control. Both appear to revell in the end of civilization as we know it. The only difference is that his first film has the worst special effects seen since Flash Gordon, and I'm talking the old Buster Crabb stuff. So he has money for great CGI, still it seems this poor excuse for a director can't work up a decent story. I just hope this film isn't too succesful or we're going to get more of this eye-candy with no originalty or gravitas. Stephen Sommers are you listening?

Concur with want for global destruction visuals: Petronas and le
by ainm
Off the top my head, the things I'd like to see SGI processors working to destroy:
First thing, MacMurdo Station loses communications. Then the devastation begins, in a pretty, white wash.
A close up of the Taj Mahal reflecting pool flooding up and over into all the surrounding land.
Waters rising precariously around Gibratar, then winds from above tear the rock barren.
The Petronas Towers' sky bridge crashing to the ground and one tower twisting off and down.
The statue of Christ at Corcovado pulled high and then thrown down.
A tower (CN, Seattle Needle) just flipped and flung into the ocean.
Anything but the tired old conventions.
I've probably seen New York beaten and battered on the screen more than two dozen times (and once with my own eyes). Though the execution generally gets better, the salesmenship of such images gets poorer and poorer with each incarnation.
