this footage cleared up A LOT

    by david dunn

Of course, Bryce Howard's character is reaching out for Lucius, just like earlier in the seven and a half minutes when she was at the party and they heard the screams. What was more interesting to me was the hunched over, red-cloak covered figure in the background, not in focus, coming up to her as Lucius grabbed her hand.

After seeing this footage, I think it's entirely unlikely that the script Moriarty and other reviewed is accurate. I mean, first of all, I doubt construction workers work all night. Secondly, why on earth would they wear bright red cloaks? Third, when Kitty is closing the underground door next to Adrien Brody, why on earth would the construction workers be banging on the walls? Seriously. Fourth, one of the kids says to William Hurt's character that they saw the creatures ... don't you think if they saw humans like themselves they would be like, ok what the fuck is going on? Or at least say "they looked like us". Fifth, if you watched the interviews, every major actor was RAVING about how powerful of a script it was and how that was why they came onto the project. I doubt some scary flick with an ending that slaps the audience in the face would have garnered that kind of admiration, not to mention, talent.

    M. Night will come through with this one, mark my words.

    The twist ending...

    by just plain steve

They decide to travel through the forest only to discover they were living in the forbitten zone and apes really rule the planet. So they travel back in the past and become the "creatures" they were originally afraid of so they do not make the same mistake twice. See I can write a movie too!

    Agree -- twist is BS

    by gudlyf

I just cannot see how that twist ending revealed here not long ago can be the real thing after watching those 7.5 mins tonight, for all the reasons already posted here. If it *is* the true ending, then I will say it'll be quite lame and utterly confusing to viewers. That hunched over figure creeping up on Ivy is enough to make anyone seriously doubt that "crazy white people" ending.

    by psyclops

I'm sure the twist ending will be just as lousy as Moriarty described but the rest of the movie still looks pretty good. Maybe it was due to low expectations but I actually liked what I saw. There's some great actors in this and Night has a strong track record. It could still turn out to be decent regardless of how disappointing the ending may be. Oh, and am I the only one who thinks Bryce Howard is damn cute?

    howling beast sounds WERE machinery

    by silver shamrock

just slowed down. The growing sound resembled a chainsaw sound slowed down to sound like a roar. we're hearing the sounds from the crazy fucking white people's perspective, not objectively, so it will come across distorted. Same thing with the witnessing of the "beasts". And Charles Darwin already pulled this stunt on pygmies when he pulled up in his Beagle. They couldn't beleiev what they were seeing. The Village all about modes of perception: forbidden colors, forbidden sounds, and trusting your senses. Is seeing really believing? The movie will be from their point of view until the end.

    by delwin

    Possible Spoilers****
Its impossible to avoid the stupid spoilers! I just don't see why construction workers, bulldozers and other equipment runs around at night with red cloaks on, killing cats, scaring the hell out of people. Wouldn't they leave notices or have the cops come, not leave red marks. Just doesn't make sense. I'm not going to pre-judge a movie before I see it. Even if I know the ending I'm still going to see it because no matter what MNS can successfully scare the shit out of me.

***Spoilers***The twist you've heard is correct...

    by future-boy

The reason why is that it isn't construction workers that are running around in the red cloak and killing cats...it's the village elders. They're aware of the time they're living in and are trying to scare the inquisitive members of the village from venturing out and finding out the secret. I read about it on a German website.

    by studio planter

it's not the construction workers that are running around in red cloaks....and honestly, i can't see why everyone is shitting on the ending if it is in fact, the correct ending. if the movie is done well, and the ending can be pulled off then it would be pretty damn cool. you guys should stop making judgement on the ending of a movie that you haven't seen. if somebody told me that in planet of the apes, they were on earth, i would say thats a fucking stupid idea...but was it? no, they pulled it off well, and i don't see how it's a slap in the face to the audience and i think shyamalan is going for the same kind of effect. people are going to walk out of the movie in a state of shock, not because the ending invalidates the movie but because what you've just seen makes you think about the film in a different context.

The twist is clever, there's no denying it

    by cineman

The problem is its just too damn clever and once you're done thinking about how clever it is, you realize you just sat through a two-hour joke to get to the punchline. The actual idea of the creatures being modern-day civilization is intriguing although the elders motivation for playing along sounds contrived. As Moriarty said, its just cheats the audience too much. If this had been a Twilight Zone it would have been much more effective in half-hour length. And if M. Night S. resorts to putting a title on the screen that says "1879" or whatever year it is supposed to be at the beginning, than that is outright lying to the audience and is not playing fair.

    you're right

    by studio planter

i've thought about that 1879 thing and i remember reading something about how in the earlier teaser it actually said "1879" or whatever on the screen but now in the newer teaser/trailer it doesn't show that. or maybe i just missed it. either way, i think people should reserve judgement until they see the preceding 90-110 minutes to the film and then the ending unveiled before attacking it. and people need to stop jumping on the "ending sucks
bandwagon, night makes pretty damn good movies, even if you didn't like the ending to signs....that movie i think, had a good ending on paper(the religious undertones and hidden meanings) and in theory but didn't fare too well in the translation to the screen....and i'm think that, HOPING that the village is the opposite of that, rejected on paper but works out perfectly on the big screen.

    No One Ever Said...

    by therealmoriarty

... that this had anything to do with construction workers. I've never said that. I've never implied that. I've never mentioned construction workers in any regard. That was something you TalkBackers created. The twist reveal was outlined quite clearly in the TalkBack under the last article we ran about this film, so I'm not going to bother doing it again. If your security blanket that you need to cling to in order to convince yourself that I'm "wrong" is that there are no construction workers in the film, congratulations. You're hung up on the wrong thing.

    by studio planter

i think the construction worker thing stems from another early guess at the plot outline from the teaser which was due mainly from the chainsaw noises and references to the forest and trees, especially the "marking" of the houses with the red paint. and thinking back to when that small teaser was all they had to go on i can't blame them for making that connection and now, i doubt that there are many people using the fact there there are no construction workers/lumberjacks as a security blanket that you're wrong and the movies going to be good. and if there are...let them believe what they want, nobody knows how it's going to be, even if you know the script, because that's only half of it.

Thankfully finally moving beyond this stupid ending deal...

    by thirdeyeh

Ok, two big developments afer watching the clips last night. First off I was able to slow down the actual footage and get a great glimpse of the creature that we see a brief flash of in the opening credits sequence. All I gotta say about that beast is this... It is one wicked looking mamajama. And surprise, not a human, and if they can make masks that drool and have lfexible jaws like this beast, I'll tip my hat off to the village elders for seeing well enough to get Stan Winston to make their creature costumes. Secondly, I read an interview with Judy Greer today in which she states that even the actors were only allowed to read an early draft of the script that then changed quite a lot. Stating later that [only people necessary] to the scene which is our coveted ending we so excitedly talk about were allowed to be a part of viewing. So for this camper, I have my own new theory on what the creatures are and the ending... none of which are even related to the leaked script reviews. It's a fake people, moving on.

That's the going story on the net....

    by delwin

The construction thing, and I try my best to avoid any spoilers, but that's what I've read by accident. And I've also read the whole Elders thing also. That idea makes more sense, but the Elders seem to be present at the big party when the little kids are telling them about the "creatures". I don't know, and at this point I don't care, I just hope the finished product keeps me in suspense. The Sixth Sense, it was about ghosts, and the ghosts were real. Signs was a story with a back drop of aliens and, they were in fact aliens. What makes this any different I don't know, but if they are really ,evil creatures, I won't be surprised.

    by truthseekr1488

It would be weird if it had been set in the same patch of farmland that Gibson's farm in _Signs_ is located, a hundred years prior to the setting of that film. I'm wondering if Shyamalan is developing his own "Visitor" mythos, a la Whitley Strieber. (For those who don't know, Strieber is a UFO writer, supposedly nonfiction though that's arguable, who suggests that the 'aliens' may in fact originate on our own world, or in an alternate dimension parallel to our world. See also the work of Jacques Vallee.)

    And a comment about Unbreakable...

    by truthseekr1488

I didn't realize it so much in the cinema, but on t.v. I just couldn't help but notice how incredibly slow-paced _Unbreakable_ is and how freakin' depressed the main characters seem. It's a superhero take-off, but done with the deliberately portentious pacing of a horror flick -- clearly intended by Shyamalan. Still, the characters all seem as if they're on Prozac or have been suffering through a decade-long clinical depression. I mean, I know Bruce Willis plays a middle-aged security guard, but fer cryin' out loud, would it have killed him to crack a joke once or twice? He did survive a train wreck after all. Oh well, beating a dead horse I guess...

    by truthseekr1488

Notice how near the end when they're all barricading themselves in the basement and the Visitors are trying to bust in, the little girls asks Gibson, "Is this a dream?" -- twice --- but nothing else comes of it. Seemed kinda weird to me at the time. Eh.

The REAL reason it can't be modern times...

    by hagadaga

I can suspend disbelief about the villagers getting away from modern society and tricking their kids it's the olden days...

I can even get past the "no fly zone" crap that people are spewing....

but there's no F'n way those villagers are getting away from the IRS! (or from Publishers Clearing House) At some point the taxes or the "you may already be a winner" would come in the mail, right? surely someone living their entire lives in this village would have seen 1 postal worker if it really were modern times.

1 more reason I don't believe the crazy fuckin white people ending.. there's no way that the big twist is going to be unairable on network tv.

    duh!!!

Death and Taxes in the Village

    by ghastly

I don't know about the taxe/IRS t hing. The Amish don't pay taxes, right? And, I think the only reason we get publisher's clearing house shit is because we've signed up for so much shit and they all swap/sell name lists.

Why do you guys rag on M. Night's movies? I totally dug SIGNS and UNBREAKABLE. We bitch that all we see is the same shit over and over and then somebody does something a little left of center and we pounce on it. If you want a "real" superhero movie rent "Spider-man" or if you want a "real" alien movie rent "Aliens". I prefer the suspense, the build-up and the dare-I-say thought provoking nature of M. Night's work. He is the Stephen King of movies.

    by koomoreborn

The creatures as depicted in the preview allow us to see strangely dressed men as the frightened villagers see them. Also, it could be guys from Wal-Mart trying to scare them off so they could build a regional supercenter. Or it might be the crew from next season's The Apprentice competing against each other to see who can clear the land for a heartland gambling empire.

Like Mr. Spock's, it's probably unpronouncable to normal humans. Oh well, I like his variety: a ghost story, a super-hero movie, a UFO picture, now a fairy tale. I can't wait for his spy picture or his cowboy story or his rock group movie.

I don't understand how all you folks have fallen under this guy's spell. He thinks he's the second coming of Hitchcock, and all he's been doing is coming up with two hours of mildly entertaining movie and then five minutes of THE SHOCKER ENDING! And doesn't this guy just LOVE seeing himself on film? His "cameos" have now become complete roles so he can watch himself rubbing shoulders on the big screen with superstars like Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson. A failed actor does not a great writer, producer, or director make. He'd be better off starting his own website and calling it Ain't I Cool News.
