A Judge Dredd movie that doesn't suck in the works'

Published at:  May 01, 2004 12:09:31 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts. Quint here with a little bit of news on the possible movement of another Judge Dredd film. Good idea? Well, it looks like the new film will be more true to the comics with original publisher 2000 A.D. taking an active role in preproduction. "The film will be dark, more like 'The Crow' with the look of 'Blade Runner,' but dark comedy must have a role in Dredd's world." Sounds like they're on the right track. No matter what it can't be worse than the deadly combo of Stallone and Schneider... Here's Noisybast:

Hi Harry,

Thought you might be interested in this story over at Comic Book
Resources. Apparently there's still hope that the new Judge Dredd
movies could turn out well. Hopefully they'll have more news soon...

Judge Dredd was totally like the comic book and it didn't work for most people. Why try to make it again? It will just tank like the original adaptation.

    by burnhollywood

I say, play it safe: no Americans should be allowed anywhere near this production. They utterly don't get British humor, let alone black comedy, and the one's who do are too quick to fall into tedious fanboy adulation, a la the tedious s***head who thinks he's really something because he memorized every Monty Python or Blackadder script...

    Ummm.....No

    by zombie buffet

@Louis P: No, the Stallone film was not faithful to the original comic at all beyond superficial aspects. First and foremost: Dredd NEVER REMOVES HIS HELMET. But since Stallone's ego was more important than the integrity of the character, the film switched from "Judge Dredd" to becoming "Stallone In Mega-City One" as soon as he showed his heavily-paid face to the audience. 'Fergie' (Rob Schneider) was originally (in the comics) a mentally-impaired neanderthal who was transformed (by "Hollywood magic") into a by-the-numbers comic companion in the flick. The Angel Gang suddenly became religious cannibals....why? They were perfectly fine in the comics (infact they were some of the best Dredd villains, period). Not to mention that the writers managed to kill off half of the core characters of the comics within 96 miinutes, whereas they took years to come and go in the comics. The movie COULD have been decent, but ultimately stunk because of Stallone.

I'd actually be hard-pressed to say much good about the old film. The Mega-City sets were nice, but lost their impact due to having been done before in other films like Bladerunner. And this was yet another movie supposedly made by a 'big fan of the comics'. Just goes to prove that, in Hollywood, that's not a guarantee of ANYTHING.

    I loved the first Dredd

    by blok narpin

Yeah, Stallone's Dredd was a pretty good film that was pretty faithful to the comic. A lot of hardcore Dredd fans were angry that Stallone took off the helmet where as Dredd in the comics NEVER took it off. He was even shown sleeping with it on. I think that is taking nit-pickiness to the extreme. So he took the helmet off...so what? Comic-to-film adaptations will never be 100%. Getting upset over that is as absurd as getting upset over organic webshooters, or Wolverine's claws coming out from between his knuckles.

    Eh?

    by zombie buffet

How is it 'nit-picking'? It's the unwritten 'golden rule' of Judge Dredd: the helmet never comes off. It's been an established 'rule' since the inception of the character back in the Seventies. Yet the film-makers have that helmet off within the first 10 minutes of the film. The fact that Dredd's face is never shown in the comics enables him to retain an element of mystery - he's the cold impersonal face of the Law. In the films, he just becomes Rambo in a sci-fi setting.

The FIRST Dredd flick didn't suck.

    by salvatoregravano

It may have been bland and Schneider should be killed with a can opener, but compared to puke like "Texas Chainsaw 2003", "Charlie's Angels" or "Punisher 2004", it was brilliant and Oscarworthy.

  • I had only occasionally read the comics when I was younger. I always wished I could read them more, but they were not very much available to me. Having said that, when I heard that a Judge Dredd movie was out I went and saw it and enjoyed it. So I guess you could say that non-comics fans may find the movie quite acceptable (I was one of the three people who actually bought the DVD). I can understand why the comics fans would be upset, though. The comics did strike me as very well crafted and the character of Dredd was extremely tight and strong. But at the end of the day a movie is not a comic and does not only aim at fans of the comic. Even though the movie did not make a decent amount of money (not enough to warrant a second attempt - $35 mil.), plenty of Stallone fans were quite happy (the prequel - "Demolition Man" was also quite entertaining :-). I will go and watch any kind of sequel or remake just because I am a sci-fi fan. Why can't sci-fi fans just enjoy movies without worrying about a stupid helmet?

    Reply to Talkback

  • The first 20 minutes of Judge Dread was acceptable -- when the comic sidekick comes in he fucks the movie. And when they end up in that desert shack with the hills have eyes hillbilly types, the film scored a new low.

I saw the Judge Dread costume in the window at the Planet Hollywood in London in 1985, that outfit came with like 5 inch heels that would have made Prince proud. Ridiculous. And why make a JD movie if you gonna take a helmet off. If only that film was directed by someone with balls like Verhoeven. Can you imagine Robocop without the helmet -- the movie would have been ridiculous.

    by spacesheik

Stallone started the 90s with a bang, a solid thriller, a bih hit CLIFFHANGER but then he fucked himself over with shit like DEMOLITION MAN, THE SPECIALIST, ASSASINS, etc etc -- now he's doing direct to video trash and some reality show about boxing...He is shit at judging scripts and picking directors. Now its too late to salvage his career, no one will greenlight ROCKY or another RAMBO.

    The Helmet Issue

    by zombie buffet

Quote: "Why can't sci-fi fans just enjoy movies without worrying about a stupid helmet?"....I do enjoy sci-fi films without 'worrying about a stupid helmet'. But if someone is going to make a Judge Dredd movie, I'd expect it to at least stick to the basic character of *Judge Dredd*. Otherwise they might as well not bother and just go make some other sci-fi lawman movie. Surely it's not a difficult concept to fathom? I acknowledge that it wasn't just made to please the comic fans, but if they are going to use the Dredd character and introduce him to a new audience, wouldn't it make more sense to present him as he was originally conceived? Surely it's not that difficult. People say it's not a big deal, but it's not much different from the notion of someone making a Spiderman movie in which he wears pink and green instead of red & blue, or Superman with a Hispanic or Afro-American actor as the Man Of Steel. Or if you want a good recent example - the upcoming Catwoman movie.

    by daddylonghead

With the exception of him taking off his helmet (I'm not even a fan of the Dredd comics, but some things are SACRILEGE) nothing about the movie was unforgivable (even Schneider, who was awful). It had a decent feel and Stallone did a good job.

    by mansep

maybe after 2010. but not soon. the fact that the first 2 scripts have already been abandoned (they had crap titles) just shows how vulnerable this wannabe franchise is. after the Stallone fiasco not many studios will want to take a chance on this. and seeing as how crap Rebellion's 2000AD is, personally i'm not sad about it. if thuis film had been made in the early 80s then it would have been sublime. but it's too late and there aren't people around who know how to make a good dredd movie anymore.

First you don't hire a star (at that point) like Stallone to do a movie; where the guy keeps his helmet on all through the movie. If you want to do that, get a B-grade actor like Peter Weller. Second I've never read the comic, but the movie was bad bad bad. I am the law...! Ugh. I am surprised that it is not on the Action channel more often. Third if its roots and humor are British, then why did not someone there do it first....?

  • As bad as the original was, I own it on dvd. There were a few elements that managed to come through in the original, ... perhaps a glimmer of hope for what is to come in this NEW Judge Dredd film. -- Imagine Harrison Ford in "Blade Runner" being replaced with "Judge Dredd", ... add some intense action and a bit of humor (in the right spots) along with cool special/visual effects ... and already you can see the different (and cool) ways the character (and movie) can be interpreted to film. -- Costume design is very important. Look at "BATMAN BEGINS" ... as there are a number of "talkbackers" debating the design of Batman's costume (see recently released pictures) with quite a variety of opinion. What matters most is how it works within the context of the film. ...But I can tell you that Batman's costume is supposed to instill fear in the guilty, ... and it's my opinion that Bruce's first attempt would be better than that design, especially form such a wealthy person. (I just hope it gets the reaction of genuine laughter, as it would in real life, which will give Bruce Wayne the focus this great task requires.) Batman's costume should eventually be something incredibly scary to look at, even without anyone inside it. -- Even as a kid, I desired comic books that were believable (as believable as the fantasy could be). -- Some say, "Let's see YOU design something better". Heh, heh ... oh, how I'd love to. As a person who knows quite a bit about design, I know I could (for a fact) improve on past designs, ... while being faithful to the character of Batman. -- With all that said, my first instinct for the Judge Dredd costume (and for other Judges) is to give the costumes some wear, ... to appear used over time, ... not so shiny and new looking as in the original film. (Remember seeing some "stormtroopers" in the Star Wars films where they've gotten dirty and even some wear from battle?) And I'd use less shiny materials, ... leather-like, ... a toughness to the look. Make the Judge costumes cool looking, ... while giving the characters some variation in look, ... with futuristic prostetics, etc... (See later comic book art of Travis Charest, whom appears to love to draw tech stuff.) -- I hope the best for the makers of this new Judge Dredd film, ... you lucky bastards.

    by pjdonnelli

I want it to be a spin off of the first film with Schneider's character as a Judge, just imagine how great the trailer would be. 'ROB SCHNEIDER WAS JUST AN ORDINARY PUNK UNTIL ONE DAY HE BECAME: A JUDGE. NOW HE'S GOING TO DISCOVER THAT BEING THE LAW CAN BE A MAJOR PROBLEM' (cue shot of Schneider running away from street punks). You all know this makes sense, does anyone really want to see a serious judge dred movie or do we want another 'halarious' Schneider romp.

He grew up in the Bronx. He moved to England after he was already making films because he didn't like dealing with the bullshit assholes in the Hollywood system and liked it there where he could make the movies he wanted the way he wanted. CAN SUCK A FAT DICK AND SWALLOW. The man has done some good work with NightHawks, First Blood, Copland, Lock Up. I don't care what any body says but Assassins was cool as fuck. He held his own in Oscar which was funny by the way in that 1920's type of comedy and who can forget the BAD ASS ROCKY. What about your guilty pleasures like Rambo 2 and 3, Tango & Cash, Cobra had The Punisher look. What about when you were cheering in Over The Top?! Demolition Man was pure fun and Cliffhanger was the shiznit. Get Carter was cool in its own way. The man has done bad movies and nobody can deny it, but who hasn't? Stallone takes flack because he was one of the biggest stars in the late 70's, 80's until mid 90's. THAT'S A PRETTY FUCKING GOOD RUN. THE MAN IS PURE BAD ASS. Oh!, and before I forget his movie Shade is suppossed to be real cool and it's getting good reviews.
