Images from IRON GIANT and confirmation of Animated Willy Wonka

Published at:  Jul 30, 1998 2:35:40 AM CDT

Geez, seems animators and artistic types have really been digging the reports from the animation studios of late, because they keep coming back with more updates. This time it's Sir Spirograph, and he's brought these here images to prove from whence he speaks. All I can say is ol Brad Bird and crew are doing a damn fine job, and if this last pic don't get ya... well... are ya a geek or what?

Well Harry I'm here to tell ya that there is work being done on WILLY WONKA here at the Warner Brothers Animation Studio. Some pretty nice looking work, I'll try to sneak ya a look or two at what's going on, that is if the big gorilla in the tux doesn't kill me first. But tonight I wanted to bring you a look at a project that has everyone here at the Dubba U B doing that damn Michigan Frog dance.... THE IRON GIANT

This is a project that is just completely coated with love. The animators working on it are just pleased as can be. They walk around with goofy smiles as they animate and create their bedroom from the long ago. A comic book thrown around, etc. The story is fantastic and it's a toon that everyone should love.

If you notice the aspect ratio of these images I'm sending you... well that's what we're shooting in. W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N!!!!! Don't ya just love it? Always gave Sleeping Beauty that extra bit of scope (giggle giggle) This kid is every little boy ya ever did see. Going out on an adventure. A part of me believes this is what happened to a kid like Asimov or Bradbury. Surely they had some wild adventure back in the youngun age!

Now this image of the big guy, well that's a computer model test. And it's fantastic, no? Well I love it. Hopefully we'll get some good toys made, though knowing WB we'll get stuck with that crap Kenner turns out. Shit! Oh well, at least we have a brilliant movie. If I don't say so myself, and I will too! Listen up Harry, I'm gonna be doing some digging here, and personally I challenge Sir Etch A Sketch to pull out something from Fantasia 2000. But I bet he's run his course!

I like it, but you have pictures obscuring text in some places - e.g. the iron giant news item.

Good thing I have a slow net connection. The images displayed over top the text, obscuring four fifths of the wordage.

    Later.

The site is your world and I won't be too loud about the actual design Harry. Me, I think it' too busy. So, there you go.

What I will comment on is the load time. Which seems to have dramatically increased. Boy I am glad for the T1 I have at work because I am not sure I would be able to wait at home. As it is, I time out more often than not.

I shall return for the info . . . I just may not enjoy the stay as much.

    When I find something to contribute . . . I'll expect more pull. 8-)

Nice layout you got, Harry. I just hope I can download it faster like the old presentation.

    Keep up the good work.

    new site design/load time

    by monkey

well, it's certainly more pleasing to the eye. but it takes forever to load AT WORK, on a fast connection, and i know it'll be even worse at home on my measley modem connection. in addition, some of the links don't seem to work right, such as hitting the "next" button and going to the FIRST article instead of the next article.

i miss the fast-loading, simple, "just the facts" page.

    by wes

Well the site design certainly is better, but everyone else is right, Harry...Load times have like quadrupled. It took me forever, and I mean FOREVER, to load pages on my creaky at-home modem. You might want to work on that.

    by whiplash

Well I finally got on to your site after trying and trying. The new design will have to grow on me but the load time I can't hang with. I've read a few of the other postings and there right! I'm at work and I'm timeing out now! when I get home, I will simply never get on. Harry if you do read this help us how can we\I survive without our daily dose of cool on the weekends!!!

    Iron Giant

    by buddy

Oh GEEZ!! This looks VERY cool. I don't think they'll be rendering the Giant in 3D. Instead, they'll be rendering it so that it fits in the style of the rest of the film (yay!). The character design is VERY simple (Thank GOD) and really fun. I'm in line already.

    The New Design/ Load Time

    by luca brasi

Well, Harry's new site is kinda funky, what with his beaming smile and the nice earth tones, but while the brown colors are easy on the eyes, it's still...brown.
And as for the loading time, well, this could be opening-day flukes, high number of users, but it's still much slower than the old page.
In conclusion, the old page had a sort of homegrown, folksy style that no doubt appealed to the eclectic nature of both Harry and his readers. The new site may look a bit cooler, but it has that "stuffy corporation trying to disguise itself" look, like all those Microsoft ads featuring the Rolling Stones, and those newer ones from the company I can't remember with Elton John singing "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting."
Whatever. It's Harry's site to do what he wants with it.

    New Layout

    by jwc1138

    Hey, Harry!
Long time listener, first time caller. I love the design of the new page, it shows that you've put a lot of hard work and effort into it, Good Job!

    But two quick things:

    1. Often the new page doesn't fit into my window, and I'll have to scroll left and right to see it all. I believe I saw a fix for this on www.webpagesthatsuck.com, you may want to check it out.

    2. I hope as the days go on, we'll be able to access previous stories just as easily as on the old page, this was truly a benefit when I come back into town, of I haven't been on the comp in a while.

Anyway, once again, keep up the great work!
    Jason

    What happened here?

    by sickboy

Harry - Your transfer rate is AWFUL and I'm on a dual ISDN connection. If you want opinions on the new layout, it's too busy. Would you PLEASE offer the news in the old-school layout for those of us who just don't have time for all this business? Does the new layout mean you'll update more often in between your globe-trotting and schmoozing? Don't forget the readers who made you famous.

The new layout is pretty slick. But the LOAD TIME is TERRIBLE! I'm on a T1 connection and I time out almost everytime I try to load a new page. Do you HAVE to use cgi programs for evrything? Harry, it's a bitchin' car, but it's got no gas! A CAR WITHOUT GAS, Harry!

    new site

    by ben

Groovy colour scheme, however as most people have mentioned its all a bit slow and fussy, I'm sure it was another top tip bit concerning animation but we couldn't read it, I presume the Wild West poster was fly as well, well the bottom portion of it I could see was funky. Keep up the good work , but remember just the facts Harry. That's how we quaint Brits like it.

    load time

    by brad

I agree with everyone else who is at work on a fast connection like me: this thing loads way too slow. Just give me the facts and nothin' but the facts. Can you continue to give us just the news the old way for users who just want to read it and then go elsewhere? I don't use the forums anymore, and I don't care about this talk back thing, except for the fact that it's giving me a chance to let you know about my problems here.

    Thanks.

    y'all's crazy!

    by tonic

maybe the load time problems everybody else is talking about have been fixed already. in my opinion, your new site loads FASTER than than your old one did. right now i'm using my dad's lap top computer with a 56k modem & i was able to connect to my provider at 46k. it took like 2 or 3, maybe 5 seconds at the most to load your main page & the rest of the pages loaded even faster. if this it too long for everybody else to wait to view your site than they are a pretty spoiled bunch.

ps. our home computer (the dad only brings home the lap top on the weekends) only has a 14.4 modem. (i think it must be worth a lot of dough as it is the only 14.4 modem still in operation in the world!) even on that shitty modem, your page loaded considerably quicker than normal. everybody's talking about how graphic-intensive your site is now & how that's slowing down the site, but the old site had that photo background & all those huge banners. those things took way longer to load than your dinky little cartoon doppleganger. get a life people. i view harry's site 7 days a week, 5 of those days with a frickin' 14.4 modem, for Christ's sake! i think you guys with your T1 connections need to stop complaining & realize that speed isn't everything.

pss. oh, i also wanted to say that i used to timeout on your site with my 14.4 quite often. i haven't timed out once since you changed over. GREAT JOB, HARRY. THANKS FOR DEVOTING MOST OF YOUR LIFE TO THIS SITE FOR FREE! some people still appreciate your hard work.

Very nice design ! I have only one comment: I think, it is better not to use the "Continue"-Button ! Because, when I want to print an article, I have to print the first site, then press continue, and then print the second page.

    by hels

You people suck! What a bunch of crap! These images are so shitty you are totally giving the wrong impression of the film. The giant looks nothing like the image you have presented for the masses. While I appreciate the enthusiasm you show for the film itself, presenting such horrible quality images hurts. If you really want to help promote Iron Giant you should remove all the images from your site immediately. Let people have a surprise when they go see the film.
