Herc Gives ANGEL 5.17 Five Stars!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Angel 5.17 FAQ
What’s it called?
“Underneath.”
Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Sarah Fain and Liz Craft (“Harm’s Way”).
When was the last time we saw a new “Angel”?
March 3. Knox died, and there was a flashback to Winifred leaving for California. The first episode of “Wonderfalls” was still nine days in the future!
What did Coax say about this one way back on Feb. 10?
“Those thinking that Lindsey was out of the running as ‘Angel’s’ fifth-season big bad were almost certainly right. After Fred is killed, Team Angel decides it needs to recruit someone who might know more than they do about the senior partners. So guess whom they rescue from a Wolfram-engineered purgatory?”
What does TV Guide say?
“While protecting Eve from a bounty hunter (Adam Baldwin), Angel grills her for info on the Senior Partners' plans and learns that an exiled Lindsey may have all the answers. But first the gang must save him from the torture dimension he currently occupies. Meanwhile, Wes gets to know Illyria better. Lindsey: Christian Kane. Eve: Sarah Thompson.”
Adam Baldwin (of “Firefly” fame) plays a bounty hunter? Wasn’t he supposed to be Team Angel’s new liaison to the senior partners?
He’s the new liason! I’ve little idea where TV Guide gets this "bounty hunter" business.
The big news?
This is easily the best thing Fain & Craft have cobbled together. It may be the best thing they ever do in their lives. Prepare to worship at their dainty TV-scribe toes.
What else is TV Guide not telling us?
You need to tape or TiVo or transcribe this episode. The DVD will never arrive soon enough.
How goes Wes’ bonding with Illyria? Does she make him reach for his hanky?
Not literally.
What’s doing with Spike?
James Marsters confirms his god-like status. I’m not certain he’s had more to work with since bolting the Buffster.
Did we ever find out why TV Guide called Lindsey “Sean” a few weeks ago?
No. This will forever remain a mystery, much like the reason TV Guide described “Buffy’s” evil god Glory as a time-traveler.
What’s doing with Krevlornswath? Did his badass self carry a sell-by date?
Lorne is all kinds of badass this week, in an entirely different way than you’d expect.
Does Amy Acker still look like Fred in the title credits?
Like Fred. But also like Illyria. And after seven years of hard work, the increasingly fabulous Mercedes McNab finally achieves regular staus in the Buffiverse. Is all this new? Because I was in the bathroom during the title sequence in 5.16.
What’s great?
Spike. Krev. Gunn. Wes. Fred. Harmony. Eve. Hamilton. Lindsey. Angel. The Baldwin’s arrival. The ice-cream vendor with the semiautomatic. "Angel's Avengers? That's..." "Beady little rat-snake?" "What I know is I started drinking the moment I found out that a girl I loved was going to die." "Okay, but you know how that never works?" “One world with nothing but shrimp.” “He is well-dressed.” “Didn’t see that coming.” “He’s not so bad!” “I was God to a god.” “Don’t flatter yourself.” “You still happy to see me?” So so so much more.
What’s not so great?
There ain’t nothing not great in this honey. It’s “Kill Bill Vol. 2” great. It’s “Buffy” great. I say, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” great. All of which is saying something! I may have lied about “Gilmore Girls” being the best show in production!
How does it end, spoiler-boy?
“I kinda need it now.”
Herc’s rating for “Angel” 5.17?
*****
The Hercules T. Strong Rating System:
***** better than we deserve
**** better than most motion pictures
*** actually worth your valuable time
** as horrible as most stuff on TV

this episode....the best...!!!!! writing good everything good...well the wes and Illyria scene lagged a bit but damn damn damn......its great to see Mercedes name in the credits.. crying now......
-
I am very happy to be able to watch Angel everyday on TNT. The new episodes have been fantastic on Wednesdays and needless to say, I will miss the show when it is gone.
-
...but still a damn good episode, and it's great to have Angel back.
-
oh my gosh i was actually first.....!!! its been like.. two years!!!!!! monumental moment here..
-
JAYNE!!!!!
-
Ummmmm, Lindsey said team Angel was 2 soldiers down. I gathered he meant Fred and Gunn (seeing as how they both were basically killed or in a hell dimension since Angel joined W&H), but what about Cordelia? She was part of team Angel also. It kills me how they suddenly decided not to mention her but once since she died, but Fred got tons of remorse from the cast. (I guess that's an "executive" decision) Oh well, I miss Fred as well, and I will miss Angel. Great season though!!!!!
-
Sweet deal! Too bad it only lasts for 6 more fucking episodes. Anyway, this episode was good. Not cum in my pants good, but almost.
-
Not counting the many other outstanding episodes in this increasingly kick ass show, this ep shows that TV is a dying art form. Angel, Spike, Wes, and the rest of the "Fang Gang" continue to impress. Their emotions, their jokes, and their steadfast refusal to go quietly into that good night all make a show that will forever be an example of great television. Now, I won't bother talking about how much the WB sucks, thousands of others have already done that for me and there's no point in treading on ground that's already been covered. Still, I think it needs to be said that once this show leaves, TV is going to need an 11th Hour miracle to save it from reality programming. To all who may be reading, enjoy the final five episodes. For a little while at least, it's all we have left.
-
Best line of tonights show. Lorne>Other high points> Lorn,Harm, and Dana Poole screaming when Agent Smith went through that dudes chest>Gunn staying in "Hell">Revelation by Lindsay>Mercedes being thrown a "Bone" in the credits>Guard at all entry points "Never Working"
-
(This may be a couple words off; I'm transcribing from memory.)
"Tell me a joke."
"Two men walk into a bar. The first man orders a scotch and soda. The second man remembers something he'd forgotten, and doubles over in pain. He falls through the floor and into the earth. He looks up at the first man, but he doesn't call for help. They aren't that close." -
That's it! Somehow back around Valentine's Day we all slipped into a Hell dimension where an evil demon cancels the BEST show on TV. I have been looking for my talismon to sweep me back through the portal into the world that makes sense again. But alas, I think my new puppy chewed it up and swallowed it and we are forever stuck in this hell dimension where The exec's at The WB are HELL GODS that torture us with reality TV and horny teenagers on parade.
DAMN THE WB, DAMN THEM TO ETERNAL TORMENT! How dare they take away our savior of television. If all the pleas, hard work, and efforts made by the fans are in vain, I want to to thank Whedon and his remarkably talented cast for 8 GREAT years of Buffyverse. An extra thank you for Angel, which in my mind was always a more enjoyable and interesting show. And that's saying a lot, because I absolutely LOVED Buffy! -
Damn near flawless, just the Fred/Wes scenes were a little off. They weren't bad, just a little disjointed, but that may have been on purpose. The pure dripping sarcasm Wes has in the face of a thing (?) that could literally rip him to shreds speaks VOLUMES about the character. Fred and Wes will save the day, I'm betting a hot pocket on it. Also, Lindsey's speech was pure Whedon. He love's to have the bad guy being the one who speaks the truth. If he didn't write the words, JW let the writers know where they should come from. Fucking A this episode rocked. Thank God I got home in time to tape this puppy. I've watched it twice and will see it again before I hit the sack. To think we have only 5 eps left is possibly suckiest thing I can think of right now. The funny thing is, I've read what shows are staying and a little about what's new for next season and there is literally NOTHING that I want to watch. EVERYTHING sucks or is at best mediocre with no originality. Naturally, I'm the 25 to 35 white male demographic that has magically gone poof from the land of TV watchers. I case you're wondering why you execs out there in TV land, re-read this post. I guess I'll just play Final Fantasy online.
-
Since Spike's presence made Angel once again watchable, maybe the WB should make a Spike spin off. Like the original Kung Fu, but with witty retorts and a sharp dressed undead guy.
-
So I'm channel surfing tonight looking for something to watch until Angel starts and who do I see sitting at the table with the Judges on American Idol? Quentin MOTHERFUCKING Tarantino. I shit you not. I swear part of my soul died tonight. What the fuck is going on??

and that ladies and gentlemen is why we've enjoyed it for 5 year
by atomheartbrother
and didn't i read on this here board that that episode was written before angel's cancellation was announced? jesus. consider: every line out of spike's mouth was brilliant. they out matrix'd the matrix (how perverse and wonderful was it to see that kid going rambo). they added yet another firefly alum seamlessly. and they manage to yet again show an uncanny ability to twist the paradigm so that new possibilities open up while simultaneously setting up what could a final storyline just in case the unthinkable happens. which is happening, unfortunatley.
-
I gotta say, for me, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season was Craft and Fain's first episode, "Unleashed"(5.3). But tonight's episode more than made up for it. I think 5 stars is a bit much, especially after the masterpiece that was "A Hole in the World" (the new standard for 5 star episodes). Lots of Buffy references tonight, I'm thinking that's one of the reason Herc loved this episode so much. Anyway, even though I can't give it 5 stars, I still liked every bit of this episode. Eve, for once, wasn't annoying. Wes and Spike, my two favorite characters, both had some great lines (Wes's joke, Spike's Knight Rider reference). Then there's the 10-year old mowing the gang down with an uzi, you can't beat that. And just to echo everyone else's sentiments, the decision to cancel ANGEL was insane. Especially, now that the WB has decided to renew ever other drama on the network. So much for that "need to make room for new shows and repeats" crap the WB was pedelling. The only satisfaction I can draw from the whole situation is knowing that whatever show the WB puts in that slot will fail miserably. ANGEL has one of the most loyal audiences out there, they'd watch it no matter what it's scheduled against. I don't know how the WB expects to launch a new "teen" show against the behemoth known as "The OC". I can't wait to see what show the WB is going to put in that slot to be smacked about mightily.
-
Just saw a commericial for Las Vegas on Monday and Christian Kane is in it!
-
Where can I find it? Kazaa dosen't have it yet, and I need an Angel (firefly?) fix!!
-
That line makes sense since Cordelia was never a "soldier" this season, remember? She was in a freakin' coma. She didn't even wake up! SHE DIED! Died before the shit started hitting the fan. It wouldnt make sense. Kinda like if he said "four soldiers down" and he was talking about Doyle as #4.
-
Wishing they played that in the background the first time we saw Adam Baldwin. I miss Anya and her shrimp references. "Sure, alternate realities. You could have, like, a world without shrimp. Or with, you know, nothing but shrimp."
-
(my first post though I have been a lurker for ages)
This episode was just fantastic. Finally, this season Team Angel has learned how to mine all of the HUGE ENORMOUS amounts of potential I have been seeing get wasted in every other season. The brought back Lindsey--something I have been championing since he left.
Connor is coming back, YES!
And who knew that Wesley Wydham-Price knew what a Smurf was? Look at the layers on *that* man.
Now if only they could somehow work out bringing back Groo. (I mean romance novel hotness Groo, not 'I am an Angel wannabe' Groo.) -
My IQ seems to have dipped for a few hours (Angel fucked me up that much) and I can't think of any references to buffy... besides the shrimp one. Anyone wanna try and list any of the ones they noticed?
Pleeeeease... -
...well he came from the ether to Wolfram and Hart/punched a guy through the chest faster than I can fart/Our love for him now still ain't hard to explain/The return of our hero, the man they call Jayne!
-
JAR was outstanding tonight. Gunn again proves to be the man. Funniest line would have to be the Eve,Harm,Lorne scream in tandem after seeing Hamilton put his fist through that guys chest. Pure badass. A close second would have to be Spike's fricken briefcase of beer. God I love this show, eat a dick Levin.
-
It was an OK episode, Herc -- but 5 stars? Please. It was very comic book-y, especially the very draggy Illyria/Wes scenes -- lots of world-weary, portentious single lines, moody staring off into space, very Frank Milleresque. Lindsey looks awful (get a haircut, guy), Eve is just as whiny and annoying as ever (and boy was I pissed at being cheated out of watching her die painfully), and Wes has GOT to get over it, because I really wanted Illyria to toss him off that rooftop just to SHUT HIM UP. And this is that I used to worship Wes. The Angel/Spike stuff was good (although I still want them to kiss), J. August Richards is doing miraculous things with Gunn, and Lorne is very affecting as a deeply depressed demon -- but five stars? Three at best, maybe. Craft and Fain are still the worst writers in the ME pit. We'll see what goes down next week next week.
-
Great episode. Can't wait to see what happens next. Fuck you network assholes!
-
After such a long layoff, I thought the episode was a little weak in plotting but made up with witty dialogue. After reading some of the above comments my appreciation of the episode has grown. It's still hard to believe that it will soon be gone. I'm ready for 'Star Trek' to finally come to a now merciful end but there's still too much happening in the 'Buffyverse' for it to just vanish forever. At least we live in a world that includes DVD sets. Some slight comfort
-
why is Angel getting cancelled while fucking Charmed is still crapping up the airwaves?
-
Really nice ep. Confirmed my beliefs that the WB are the stupidest fucks on God's green earth for cancelling this show . All we need now is for Angel is go all Angelus again and this season will be the best ever and once again HARRY YOUR ANIMATION IS GROSS !!!

Whatever show WB puts in Angel's slot (Dark Shadows) won't last until December. Te 9:00 Wednesday slotholder will be a miserable failure and we will all be able to send "I told you so" postcards.

Ok... Joss can't let everyone survive (i.e. Buffy Finale: see Anya) so who ever dies has to die dramatically and make us feel it as true fans.
The senior Partners help bring about the apocalypse, waiting to see which side Angel truly chooses. That was the whole reason they never wanted him dead, incase he wound up on their side.
At some point Lindsey finds a way to remove Angel's soul and bring Angelus into play again. Lindsey acts arrogant toward Angelus, cause he has scored big points with the Partners for ridding Angel of his soul. Angelus then turns and kills Lindsey very nonchalantly, draining him dry, Angelus then decides his role in the apocalypse is to kill the senior partners and be the Apocalypse, so he starts eliminating them one by one. He is taking over W&H all for himself.
Angelus and crew, (a new W&H who aren -
Why is Angel being cancelled? Don't give me the "WB sucks" stuff, cause I know it does. But what is the actual reason? Plus, does anyone think that Angel will be saved at the last minute? I sure hope so. I've been watching the season 3 boxset that I picked up over Easter, and its absolute gold! Awesome stuff.
-
Wasn't during the day when I would have noticed it. Cuntrag. sk
-
Haha, I loved the shrimp comment. As soon as she started talking about the other dimentions I thought to myself "a world without shrimp"
-
I've taped it but so far I only got to see the pre-credits openning. I think TV Guide called him a bounty hunter because at first glance he looks like Brian Thompson from the X-Files, who was also called a bounty hunter, although I don't remember any bounty being involved with him in the episodes I saw. Ah well, JAYNE IS BACK!
-
The WB executives are not morons. Their job is to make money. They do not make money by airing a low-rated show like Angel. This isn't like Fox canning a critical darling after 5 episodes. WB gave this show 5 seasons to find an audience. Its tiny, devoted fan base doesn't impress advertisers. Maybe it would be a prestige thing if Angel actually, say, got Emmy nominations or other awards, but it doesn't, and that's a different can of worms. Will WB replace it with a show of higher quality? It doesn't seem likely. Will WB replace it with a show that gets better ratings? I don't know, but the execs won't know either until they try.
-
Fred's dead. Gunn's in a sort of hell. Wes is an alcholic. Shit, so is Lorne. THE apocolypse is coming. I think this will be like DS9's ending which made up for the entire series. Here's to a strong ending to Angel.
-
the shrimp reference was actually from the special buffy episode "Superstar" featuring Jonathon as the hero of an alternate reality in season 5 -- not the willow episode.
-
What the heck happened in the last five minutes? I was watching my Maple Leafs getting spanked by the Sens and I missed the last five minutes. What the heck did Lindsay say to Angel? Okay, considering the crap that is on TV right now shows like this is being cancelled? Losing the 25-35 male demographic. Try this...let's see some hot women on this show!!! Amy Acker (in terms of being on TV, not in real life) is a seventh round draft pick at most. Mercedes...late third round-early fourth. Dana Poole...Early second rounder. Charisma...first rounder and yah boneheads kill her off. Why I started to watch Buffy was because of SMG and CC...then I realized that it's a really good and clever show which is rare on TV these days so I got into it. Faith came in the third season and was awesome. So much in fact that I was willing to sacrafice the first quarter of MNF (Buffy was on Mondays up here). WB think about that for a minute. Let's get this show on FX and give it what it truly deserves...A really hot new female co-star who loves to take off her clothes, get some sex and swearing and keep the violence and...Hello ratings!
-
...and you called me a smurf.
-
Angel's ratings were UP this year. There's a snowball's chance in hell that its replacement, Dark Shadows, will do better. But guess which one is cheaper to produce, and is "new" (and thus has the potential to expand to new audiences, whereas an established show likely won't)? Yet the WB is short-sighted: Dark Shadows will fail. Fans will see it for the cheap clone it is. The plan to air episodes twice a week - once in a repeat slot - won't do shit all for them. Fuck em. Fuck the WB. Fuck them up their stupid asses. I'll be removing their lame-ass excuse for a network from my preset channels once Angel is over. As for this episode, it was one of the best of the series. Illyria's scenes were incredible - I'm now officially an Amy Acker fan. As Fred, she was simply ok, but she's really showing some range here. "You called me a smurf" should be up there as one of the best lines.
-
Maybe he's called the bounty hunter since Bladwin was on The X-Files as an alient super-soldier of sorts, who pretty much filled in for Brian Thompson's Alien Bounty Hunter. And TV-Guide just got confused... yeah... mmm... shrimp!
-
We have begun contacting our local cable company, requesting that the WB network be dropped from the channel listings. So far, they've been polite and seem interested in hearing us out about the lousy programming on the WB (except Angel of course). Just a suggestion for those as disappointed as we are about Angel being cancelled ( and Charmed stays? huh?). Great episode last night. Everyone before me as said why, no need to give anymore reasons. If the WB doesn't agree to Angel movies at the very least, call your tv provider and request the WB gets taken off.
-
Can someone help a brother out? I'm an IDIOT and forgot to set my VCR for last night's Angel. I would be more than willing to pay for dubbing and shipping of a clean copy of the episode. Please drop me a note if you can help me. Many thanks. e-mail me at camhill@comcast.net
-
First of all, hey, Downtown393, I like your fantasy ending. Second of all, this was another solid episode for me. It wasn't a 5 star ep if you ask me but it was solid nonetheless. Lots of great scenes. The hell dimension Lindsey was in was definitely hell. There was good humor as always. Jayne is there. Illyria is scorching hot. Angel and Spike teaming up is always a laugh. Danny Glover en Mel Who ? Jackie Chan en Chris Who ? I can't wait for the final episode. I am sad to see it go. WB isn't Warner Brothers for me anymore. I don't know if I should call them Warner Bitches or Warner Bastards, but both names fit them well. The way I see it they can burn in hell. I will never e-e-ever spend money on anything from the Warner Bastards again, unless it's Angel related. Any of their movies I will boycot. They let us down big time and that stab in the back can never be forgiven.
They don't owe us a gazillion seasons, but at least they owed us closure at the right pace (i.e. a 6th season). If WB cancelled Angel for the money WB should have spent less money on coke, hookers, booze and sports cars. FN pricks. Fuck WB and their inbred families. I spit on them and on the pigs that brought them to this world. -
It was important enough to expend dialogue in Cordy's last episode that Gunn had grown out his hair. Why don't we mention that Gunn's head is shaven again in this episode? Or should we infer that Gunn is returning to his roots in the face of what has happened?
-
I knew I'd seen that somewhere. Oh, and I really want a The Wrath action figure, oh yeah....
-
Since Herc brought this project up on a TV talkback once or twice before I just thought I'd mention that they are going down in flames already: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-040414airamerica,1,1031586.story
-
This was the episode that they were filming when they got the news of cancellation. They were in the middle of the basement fight with the demon when the producer announced it to everyone.
-
Its the fastest hour on tv.
and we only have 300 minutes left.
but we are enjoying every last drop.
And Once again I find myself alone,I enjoyed the Fred/Il. and WES. segments..just because its amazing that go back and look at near the first eps of buffy when wes first appeard..to what it is today...Fantastic. well anyway thats my two cents,,,,Peace
-
It boils down to this. Good stories that have action, drama, and humor. The emphasis on long-term storylines is more interesting for us and demonstrates that the producers have some respect for the intelligence of the viewers. Good acting. Well written characters; that enables the viewers to give a damn about what happens next. Finding all of those things in one show is becoming increasingly rare. Personally, after Angel goes off the air there will only be one show on network that I think is worth watching, and nothing left on cable either.
-
i really hate the wb right now, this weeks angel was so cool, and as a whole this season has been so great, but now it's sorta like winning the big game and getting kicked in the nuts in the process. i really hope we get some kinda reprise from the cancellation, but i kinda doubt it.
-
Just a question: Doesn't Fox get all the DVD revenues from Buffy and Angel? And the syndication money from TNT and FX? It will be funny when Fox makes continues to make a bundle off these shows. Dark Shadows will be Birds of Prey II. At that point everybody who sent the WB pinheads postcards should send "I told you so" postcards.

Deac Speaks... the first season i start to watch, is of course t
by deacon
i always hated Buffy the vampire slayer... the movie (Luke Fucking Perry) and the show... i watched 3 episodes in the first season, thatw as it, i disliked it greatly. then after it blew up and got super popular, i was convinced to watch another 2 or 3 episodes of the third season....and i still thought it sucked and i didn't wanna watch it at all, when Angel came out i never even bothered, it seemed lame just like Buffy was lame... but then something happened, theWB put Angel on right after Smallville on wednesdays (a show i've watched and loved since the pilot)... i watched it... i remember the first episode i saw, it was the one where Spike becomes Corporeal(sp?) i liked it...i didn't love it but it interested me, i watched the very next episode and i liked what i saw more, and every week i loved what i saw until i LOVED it, more then Smallville... i would watch some eps of Smallville and just say to myself "man... i can't wait to see Angel!" i read up on Angels history from buffy and Spikes (i was very displeased that Spike was not a regular for any other Angel seasons, he's quickly become my favorite character) i bought the first seasn of Angel on DVD and freakin LOVED it, i downloaded a bunch of episodes from Season 4(the whole BEAST storyline and Jasmine...) and i'm officially hooked..... if your wondering, yes i gave Buffy another try after my love for Angel took hold.. i watched a couple "key" episodes of Buffy involving Angel and SPike, and yes i still don't like it, i don't know why, i just can't watch it, it's crap to me... Angel is different. in any case.. i can't fucking believe it's canceled, i mean i can see why it's cancelled (it's GOOD) but i wish it wasn't, it's not gonna get on another network... it's just not gonna happen. and no matter what theWB probably isn't gonna renew it, not this late in the game anyway. i still have the 2nd and 3rd and 4th seasons to watch... i just wanted to say how this show is just awesome ... it's second only to 24 and Sopranos on my best TV shows list (i guess it's third then) Futurama, Firefly, Action!, Andy Richter, wonderfalls, and now Angel gets added to the great shows cancelled before their time list.... and man that Cordelia? fine as a mother fucker... her ass is sexy as hell! i wanna bend her over a kitchen table and just fuck her up her tight ass while i cup her lucious breasts!
-
First time I've ever heard a Smallville fan becoming an Angel fan but hey its cool to see your digging ATS. I'd say give Buffy a second try though, watch seasons 2 or three to get you started.
-
fascinating ep, really made you think, like whoa.
considering nothing else currently on the wb remotely makes you think, i don't get it. actually i do, it's network television. -
Can somebody explain Wes' joke to me? I don't get it. Yes, I'm stupid.
-
Unless you're wondering (in a literal way) who the images in the joke are supposed to refer to (I mean, assuming that Wes is the one falling through the floor, etc., who would the other one be) I think all we were supposed to get out of the "joke" was that Wes was (and is) so desolate that that image was the most amusing thing he could come up with.
-
This episode was so great, i'm in shock. I've missed Angel the past few weeks, so i re-watched all three seasons of 24. I was convinced that 24's breakneck pace and brilliant twists made it the best show, then I saw this episode. It's like the Matrix crossed between the Lord of the Rings crossed between Kill Bill. This is one brilliant hour of television. Here's how you get Angel renewed, show this episode, "Underneath" and "A Hole in the World" to every major TV network's CEO, and ask them to name one show better than it. If you showed this episode and "AHitW" to movie producers and ask them to name three movies that have come out in the past year better than those two hours, they would beable to name max 2. A sad, sad day for TV when this show ends.
-
I too will stop watching the WB after ANGEL ends. Screw them. Do they honestly think that after 5 years of intelligence, brilliance, and creativity that we will accept some warmed-over third-rate knock-off teenybopper soap? No f***ing way. I am not only NEVER watching the WB ever again, I'm unplugging the damn TV. I'm sick of the s*** the networks shovel at us and call "entertainment." I've had it. I'm done.
