New I,ROBOT trailer!

Published at:  Apr 14, 2004 4:29:51 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... well that first I,ROBOT trailer was one of those wildly divirgent trailers that seemed to have Fresh Prince moments and Robot Terror Moments interspersed back and forth. Now, FOX is cutting a trailer that makes it look tonally consistent and one thing and one thing only... an action film with evil robots. This trailer definitely feels cooler than the last one, but I still remember the last trailer. I really hope Proyas works his magic on this one! Here ya go...

Hey, Harry -

Just thought you might want to know that for the second trailer for I Robot, they've jettisonned the crappy Will Smith comic dialogue in favor of crappy Will Smith CGI.  Check out the cartoon character he becomes when he jumps through the collaping floor . . . ugh.

    Adaptation?

    by lazarus long

Exactly what Asimov material is this supposed to be based on? I just read I, Robot and it doesn't seem to bear much of a resemblance to anything in there. It seems close to Caves of Steel (the first Bailey/Olivaw novel), so why not just adapt that by itself. I loved Dark City but I'm really afraid of what big studio money and Will Smith (what happened to the brilliant actor who played Ali without the Fresh Prince wisecracks?) is going to do to his vision. Ultimately, this is going to seem like a slight afterthought next to Spielberg's A.I., albiet one with a lot of shit going BOOM.

ALEX PROYAS SPEAKS ABOUT THE TRAILERS

    by biko salamar

"It's actually pretty hard cutting a trailer for a movie like this when so much of it is still incomplete. We have upwards of 900 vfx shots and when one of the main characters is CG it's hard to come up with enough shots at an early stage for trailers. I hated the first trailer more than anyone - it did not accurately represent the tone of the film. The new trailer is far closer to the actual flavor of the movie but is still as far as I'm concerned just scratching the surface. There will be 2 more trailers leading up to release that will give you all a pretty good insight into what the finished film will be like. Hang in there and keep letting me know your thoughts."

I can accept him playing this role seriously. But in the first trailer when he cracked with the jokes and sassy banter, I groaned. It totally ruined the mood that the start of the trailer was implying -- a sort of Minority Report/Blade Runner thriller. The last scene in that first trailer felt like something out of The Klumps. What the hell.

Spiderman 2 CGI top of the line.

    by jimmy_009

If you really think the CG in Spidey 2 is crappy you don't know much about CG. Granted Spiderman 1 wasn't flawless, but it was fantastic for the time. Spiderman 2 is head and shoulders above that, and it's not even finished. The first trailers always make the effects look flawed and poorly done (like in Master and Commander, which had terrible effects in the first trailers.) That said I Robot DOES have terrible effects and crappy production design. I won't even bother downloading it, it's garbage.

    by pjdonnelli

It is an effect, its not going to look real in all films. No one ever complained about the stopmotion effects of yesteryear looking unrealistic. You all seem to think that the people who produce the effects havent put a lot of hard work in and made it look as good as it possibly could. They can only work within the budjet and the power of the software that they have. I for one think the effects in I Robot look amazing, and if any of you think you could do better then im sure that the film companies would only be more than happy to employ you.

    by mansala

I don't know about you, but I'm getting really sick of these trailers all looking the same. Same BAM BAM BAM nondescript orchestral music. Same pace of cutting/splicing meaningless action moments (any one of which could have come from another random action-packed movie) together. Overall, the same tone as any old summer blockbuster. The only thing that seemed mildly interesting were those shots of the public streets and you see robots at work --the cgi there looked the least hammed because the filmmakers weren't trying to SELL A BEAT.

    Reply to Talkback

  • It's attack of the killer robots, one man saw it coming, this kind of end of the world conflict they seem to think has to figure into every science fiction movie they release.

Frankly, I think they would have had better luck sticking to the original robot concept: a human detective pair with a robot one. Asimov has a fascinating universe to explore, and they could launch a nice, Star-Wars like Franchise while they're at it. But no, they have to act like the average viewer wouldn't appreciate just a little coolness that didn't depend on playing out action cliches. This movie will have to be pretty good to overcome that.

    by notchjohnson

I've never read a whole Isaac Asimov book, but I read half of the book "Robot City" (or was it just one in the series?), so I thought that Will Smith in this movie was going to be the "serious" Will Smith, the one from "Six Degrees of Separation." Maybe I just associated Asimov too much with high-brow science fiction. But the first trailer was just God-awful, because my expectation of high-brow sci-fi crashed into lame attempts to resurrect "Men in Black". And I envisioned Fox getting scared and running for the "Yo Yo Yo WILL SMITH" card instead of focusing on the story and theme. I like Will Smith in funny situation when the story is right. This movie doesn't look like the place for TV-cop-show humor. Notch out.

    SOUL PLANE v I ROBOT

    by montypigeon

Can this beat SOUL PLANE as the worst film of the year? To people who don't know, Soul Plane is this amazing film where Racism is allowed in film. Its hilarious without having any jokes, story or acting. I ROBOT vs SOUL PLANE the battle has begun. If anyone on this site enjoys Soul Plane then we know the atom bomb was made for a purpose and a good one at that. If anyone involved in SOUL PLANE is reading anything here, then a few words for you......GO F**K YOUR F*****G SELVES AND LEARN TO MAKE A FILM OR GET A F*****G EDUCATION. ITS THE BIGGEST WANK EVER MADE AND IS NOT ONLY RACIST BUT A DISGRACE TO THE BLACK PEOPLE AS A WHOLE. WHOEVER GAVE THE GO AHEAD FOR SOUL PLANE TO BE MADE, SHOULD BE F*****G KILLED. SADDAM IS NOT OUR ENEMY, THE MAKERS OF SOUL PLANE ARE. IN 25 YEARS TIME, THEY WILL BE SHOWING SOUL PLANE AS PUNISHMENT TO CONVICTS. SO EVERYONE INVOLVED KILL YOURSELVES NOW.........I ROBOT on the otherhand could work but sadly WILL SMITH = BOX OFFICE DISASTER. Without even seeing it, I know its better than Soul Plane which I had the unfortunate pleasure of watching. Snoop Dogg, you would think is a Oscar winnning actor in the film. The rest of the actors and the creators just dont deserve to live. Crucify them all and show it live on tv. Now that would be justice.

I think we should have all our citizens join the millitary for a couple of years. It doesn't mean that college will be out of the question, or that they MUST stay in the millitary, but it WILL force citizens to care for their country. I've lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in the 25 years i've been alive I see more immigrants than locals. I'm not opposed to immigration, but all of them seem to be from countries that are much worse off than ours. It's not like brittains are fleeing here in the masses. Anyway, by requiring americans to join the millitary, well, it might just explain to us how much we should care for this country. I don't know about other countries but Israel has been doing this successfully for years.

    Killer Robots?

    by hairy nutsack

Here's the problem with calling this film an Asimov film in a nutshell. ALL of Asimov's robot stories were written in protest of all the old sci-fi stories and movies that had killer robots in them. In his stories robots would often "die" just from the very thought of a human coming to harm. So what does Hollywood give us in his name? Killer fucking robots?!?!?!..................As for the Bush bashing, anyone opposed the war is a fucking cowardly Ted Kennedy's dick sucking moron who chooses to blind themselves to the realities of the world we live in today. You guys hate Bush because he's not Bill Clinton nevermind that Billy Boy fired cruise missiles into Iraq based on THE SAME FUCKING INTELLIGENCE that Bush had when he chose to go to war, based on THE SAME FUCKING INTELLIGENCE that the U.N. used to drop 17 U.N. sanctions on Iraq. Fucking gutless cowards.

Monty, I'm glad to hear someone say something about this. I saw the trailer for SOUL PLANE and was embarrassed, but in the same way that a lot of "black culture" is embarrassing to me, the same way a lot of "feminist culture" embarrasses me: it still looks an awful lot like a white male fantasy to me, except, this time, you're basically doing it to yourselves. So that's what liberation gives us? This gangsta stuff or SOUL PLANE stuff doesn't look all that far from the cotton patch, to me. Shame on them. by birdyspoon

This will probably be my only post but u nerds (yes nerds) need lives. Movie and Tech nerds are not the only audience that the studios try to attract. This movie will be PG-13. Therefore, do u think that the same audience who loves LizzyMcguire and Spiderman would go watch a dark movie almost similar to the tone of The Crow? Most likely not. So many of u complain about this not being close enough to Minority Report. Well, if u want to see Minority Report go rent it! The CGI here looks good enough to me. Spiderman's CGI sucked (and don't make excuses about when it was made) Independence Day, Star Wars, Jurrasic Park were made years before Spiderman and they all looked better. U guys need to stop bitching about movies, get lives, and start getting more concerned about reality. Alex Proyas has also said himself in his official website (mysteryclock.com) that the tone of the movie was misrepresented. This is indeed a darker, smarter movie. Go visit his site and ask questions. He answers back. Stop being hypocrites defending shit like Spiderman and dissing a movie that hasn't even come out yet

    Why Will Smith?

    by stalking_goat

I don't understand why he got this role. Smith has basically typecast himslef as an action/comedy protagonist. (MIB, Bad Boys, Wild Wild West etc.) Now, Smith is a decent actor (see Six Degrees of Seperation) but he insists on doing this "comedic" roles. Now if this isn't what the film was supposed to be then why pick Smith? Judging from the first trailer he doesn't seem to be attempting to play it straight, and off the top of my head I can think of a dozen other actors who could do this role better and probably cost less. This then leads me to the inevitable conclusion that Smith was the studio's idea, and despite what the director would like to believe they are pushing this as MIB 3, and need to the big name to draw in Summer crowds. They might as well call the movie, WILL SMITH in i, robot. Either way I'll go see it and find out.

    by bigeyeddevil

I can't believe it, but someone named Hairy Nutsack is the only post containing the root of the problem. Obviously Proyas is a great director, obviously the movie would have been better darker, and obviously Will can do a decent job playing it straight or crooked. However, even if the plot turns out to be engaging and interesting, it will NEVER by Asimov. An emotionally-charged army of killer robots!?!? Asimov's books were great (among many other reasons) because he used the 3 LAWS to explain each of his mysteries, while at the same time
providing us with a little commentary on the human condition (ala Data or Spock). Instead here, we see the 3 LAWS thrown out the windown in the first installment of what could have been a great scifi epic. There is a reason why he is the #1 scifi writer of all time, why can't Hollywood understand that?

Teddy could so take these namby-pamby I Robots

    by funmazer

Will Smith would be surrounded by robots, then look up and see this helicopter coming down. CUT TO: Teddy, in door of copter, with full battle gear on. Opens up with the 50 cal, mowing down row after row of plastic Susie-Q Easy-Bake-Oven-Bots. Once it's dry, he whips out his sword and does this triple ninja backflip out of the copter and lands on the ground, slashing past the Main Bad Robot as he goes. Main Bad Robot laughs, says "You missed" or such. Teddy looks at him and says "You WILL Break!" Then - just like in Underworld - the Main Bad Robot slides in half, see, Teddy actually DIDN'T miss! Clever, huh? Will Smiths looks at Teddy and says "Damn, brother - not bad for a toy!" Teddy turns, gives him a Clint Eastwood glare and says "I am not a toy." If someone made a film about a strictly white arline with a black family onboard, only to take the complete piss out of them then there would be uproar. The film is the worst I have seen for a long time, nevermind the racist story behind it. If someone offered me cyanide or to watch the film again, it would be a hard choice to make. Anyone spends their money on seeing this, you will feel as if you just murdered someone by the end. The makers are racist and the film goes to show this.

  • Anybody remember the Lexus in Minority Report? The Minis in the Italian Job? Can a movie be made anymore without an 'official' car to drive? I've got nothing against the car companies, but the studios are really taking this too far. It kills faith in "artistic vision". Suspension of disbelief doesn't refer to enjoying the diegetic on-screen world anymore, it refers to walking into the theatre trying to believe that you're going to see a movie, not a 100 minute commercial... and it's getting harder day by day.

This could be a good movie. Could suck donkey balls too, but nothing I saw tells me it absolutely, certainly will. Sure, the story will be dumbed down and Will Smith will play Will Smith. I just want to see an attempt at giving me a believable world that is internally coherant, something that Minority Report, or AI, or any number of other stabs in this direction tried. And the bots look totally reasonable to me, OF COURSE you'd want kinda cartoony faces on them. Too damn creepy otherwise and they might "pass" for human. You'd keep the facial 'ware as cheap as possible to do the very basic job -- convey non-verbal info to humans in a clear manner.

    by nerdboy1423

The robots were CGI, Will Smith just acts like he was made in a computer. That Will Smith was real Will Smith, the floor obviously has some after market work done though. You can tell if something is CG or not, and with this movie it would be pretty hard to not tell, unless you were intentionally trying to give this movie flak for some dumb reason, oh I remember, the first trailer is like the worst thing released ever, besides Passion of the Christ. Hmm...Lasagna Jesus. What a dumb movie.

    by theseeker7

Ok, well 2 main points come to mind after viewing this trailer: First, as is typical with a trailer (especially the "big summer action pictures") pretty much the whole plot arc has been given away. Whether the robot actually killed the man in the 1st place or not (& probably did), we absolutely know already that the robots revolt and want to overrule the humans. Which leads me right to sunny point #2 - Anybody remember a series of films with "Terminator" in their title? Ya know, about the human race's arrogance in building hi-tech machines for their own purposes, only then for the machines (who were conceived TOO well) became self-aware and decided they weren't meant to cater to our needs? So they.... uh.... (ahem)... revolted? And tried to take over the world...?

    by smurfeus maximus

It still looks pretty good. It seems like the only thing they really borrowed from I, Robot is the Three Laws of Robotics. I like that they made the robots look more humanoid and less like the walking trash-cans that the books described. Maybe they should just change the title to "Robots Gone Wild" or something.

    by krylite

How come not Jeff Goldblum as a robot scientist. Why does it have to be Will Smith the fart prince of BelAir who said "Star Wars is passe." No character in I, Robot approaches any of Will Smith's over the top roles. Natalie Portman better be serious about acting this time but she seems to be a good choice. I personally thought I Robot were Asimov's best stories. The later Foundation and Olivaw books were just about sex with space ladies of germ-free colonies and that stupid Gaea planet. Larry Niven's detectives were better than Asimov's. Still hope they show the "hyperspace experiment" story and the "Brain", plus the scenes of the afterlife going to hell/heaven etc.

Yeah, it's diverged from Asimov's seminal work. But all things considered, it doesn't look bad at all. The only real problem I had with the trailer was the end. It almost seems like some sort of conspiracy theorist's blank check to spy on his Arab neighbors.

    CHANGE THE TITLE!!!

    by drath

Because I still want the Harlan Ellison screenplay to be made with this title--and starring Francis McDormand as Susan Calvin and John Cusack as Robert Bratenahl. Bruce Greenwood would have been an excellent Stephen Byerley too. More's the pity that he's in this action movie that holds not one fucking resemblance to the book of the same name. And if you're going to bitch about me not giving the movie a chance, you don't get it. I'm sure it'll be fine as an action movie, but it doesn't have the right to use the name since it has rewritten the story and violated its principles by making the robots into evil killers in a take over the world scheme.

Did somebody say Will Smith equals Box Office disaster??? WTF

    by man w no name

Will Smith a box office disaster??? Yeah, I guess you could say MIB, MIB 2, Independence Day, Enemy of the State, and Bad Boys 1 and 2 were horrible disasters. Wild Wild West was a big pile of shit. But don't blame Smith...well, I guess you can blame him, he's the idiot that signed on to do the movie. But even WWW had a pretty big opening weekend. I myself will be seeing this day 1 as pretty much every talk backer here hates Will Smith and doesn't even have a concept of this movie. They see a trailer and they automatically assume the movie is going to suck. How many times have you guys been disappointed w/ the movie after seeing how much the trailer kicked ass?? Probably quite a few. In other words, talk shit about the movie once you've seen the movie, until then just shut the fuck up and wait til the movie comes out. And one more thing. Please don't use crappy CGI as why a movie sucks or doesn't. Look at some of the classics like Blade Runner. The CGI was excellent for back then, but not very good by todays standards. Does that mean if you guys saw the movie today you would say it sucked because of bad CGI??? If that's the case, wouldn't a lot of people hate LOTR because of the really suspect CGI? Except for Gollum i thought the CGI in LOTR was very very average. Didn't take away from the movies though. Except Legolas surfing down an elephant trunk has gotta be the single most awful scene in CGI history. Maybe Jackson ran out of money and had the makers of the Atari 2600 do that particular shot. Man, that shit was horrible. And it was really a freakin' gay scene to begin with. What the hell were they thinking??? Here's to hoping a character getting played by Orlando Bloom dies a horrible death in one of his next movies.

No-one was more disappointed to hear that Will Smith was in this flick...I signed on to work on the VFX quite early on. And believe me, seeing the first trailer really made alot of us groan and question what the hell we were doing here. But honestly we've seen more of the film and it's surprised us...Will is not as bad as the trailers show...the robots look much better on film...the QT's suck...these trailers are ass...but the film won't be as bad as alot of you think...I've been surprised the more I see of it.

Forget the CGI, forget Will Smith, let's talk about what matters here....the absolute corruption of the genius work of Isaac Asimov. This movie could win 10000 Academy Awards and it will still be a crime against humanity. ISAAC ASIMOV HATED KILLER ROBOT STORIES!!! You guys are the same people screaming bloody murder about how they fucked up Catwoman but now that they're fucking up some of the foundational(pardon the pun) works of science fiction you guys only care about the goddam CGI or Will Smith? This is like taking LOTR and making it a romantic comedy. This is like creating a First Person Shooter videogame based on Citizen Kane. This is like masturbating while looking at pictures of Bea Arthur. It's wrong, wrong, WRONG!!!! One more time, ISAAC ASIMOV HATED KILLER ROBOT STORIES!!!!

I'd have nothing against the film (although I'd still be unlikely to go see it) if it didn't have the title 'I, Robot'. --------- Still, this TB brought a smile to my face at least: the image of the wind falling out of UPS_SandEagle's sails as everyone failed to pay him even the slightest bit of the attention he was after. :^D Hopefully he's not still around to get any gratification out of this mention of him here.

Those were some of the first books I read as a kid,and nothing in these trailers reminds me of those ( except for mentioning the 3 laws of robotics).
I mean,if they're trying to appeal to teenagers with this, how many of that target audience will know what the hell I,robot is,or who Dr.Asimov is?
So why even use the title of one of the best sci fi books made for it's generation.
Bah,fuck it,I must be old.I remember when sci fi movies had interesting ideas along with the special effects. Now it's all about "the shiny".
And for the person who said maybe this movie will improve the chances of there being a movie or series of movies based on "Foundation",I really hope this thing tanks.

No but seriously only a few seconds from this movie is enough to show that the CGI work is TERRIBLE! Feels like going back to 1996, or something... have you seen Will`s car being thrown at a tunnel`s wall like in a fucking Bugs Bunny cartoon??? Ugh! With that moronic, totally useless Spiderman sequel (the trailer sucks major ass by the way!), summer 2004 will be a total catastrophe in terms of blockbusters. But then again who cares? We all gonna have 9/11 part 2 -or, if we`re lucky, World War 3- on FOXnews this summer, so i think we`ll still have something to blow our brains off.

Sorry about the "hatred of all things LoTR" bit. That was uncalled for and I apologize. Still, I think the way this TB has turned out rather proves my point. Oh yes, the CGI in RoTK really "sucked." Legolas wasting the oliphaunt and crew was one of the most awesome action scenes ever. It looks great and is right up there with the best Errol Flynn action scene. Of course, that's only my opinion so don't you haters get your Under-roo's in a twist. I think this movie trailer has decent graphics though it's rather hard to qualify a statement like that since I'm seeing in in "postcard" size format. ** Waves to raw_bean from the back of the room.

    I, Robot

    by u1

Looks like one thing from the book exists, the law of robotics. That's it. When I heard Will Smith was the lead I knew hollywood was getting ready to bastardize another story. Look these guys wanted to make another WESTWORLD (Directed by Michael Crichton in 1973!). I love WESTWORLD but it isn't I, Robot! By the way Yul Brynner plays a better creeped out robot anyway. Who ever designed these robots needs some design theory classes. They look freakish and I doubt anyone would want something that freakish in their living room. Remember, it's the things you don't think will harm you that will make your skin crawl and give you trust issues.

I think there is reason this is being made after Asimov has passed away. I hope hollyweird never touches Foundation or the other Robot novels. From what I've seen of the trailers this exactly the type of hysteria that Asimov was trying to PREVENT.
