More PUNISHER Reviews Coming In!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Peter Travers seems to have really liked this, but I’ve heard a lot of hardcore PUNISHER fans who don’t seem to think this is a movie for them. They’re unhappy with the particular version of Frank Castle that Jonathan Hensleigh chose to portray in his film. Me, I’ve got very little baggage from the comics, and I liked the film a heck of a lot when I saw it a month or so ago. Let’s see what our first scooper thought:
Hey, Harry
I just got home from an advance screening of Marvel's latest comic-movie, "The PUNISHER" (courtesy of some free passes from "Strange Adventures comic shop in Halifax) . I enjoyed myself, but I think the hard-core PUNISHER fans will have some mixed feelings.
"Was it a good movie?" Yes... The story was there, the acting was there, the pacing was there. Even though there might have been a few plot holes or head scratchers (like, months after the death of Frank Castles family, the crime scene still contains Frank's father's gun collection is a display case), it was still a great movie.
"Was it true to the character?" Yes... and No... If you were to explain to the layman about what the character was about, it' pretty much there. That is, "Frank Castle's family was murdered and gets even by using a lot of guns and explosions while wearing a skull on his chest". In this movie, he wasn't in Vietnam, he isn't totally crazy, and he is/was an FBI agent. Basically, if the main character's name wasn't "Frank Castle", this would have been a great Van Damme movie.
"How were the supporting characters?" Awesome... every character had his/her place. No character was left unturned. From the simplest "yes-man" to the top of the food chain, the supporting characters really help make the movie. In fact, I will be VERY disappointed if the actor who played "Spacker Dave" doesn't get a best supporting actor nomination. You know how we say "Nicholson was born to play the Joker" or "DeVito was born to play the Penguin"? Well, forget it. The actor who played Dave just nailed it. He was born to play Dave. The actor looks, acts, and I bet even smells like Dave. Garth Ennis would be very proud.
"How were the Violent and Bloody parts?" Not bad... Not great either. Some parts were extremely good like the Russian showing up and all hell breaks loose. The torture scene was **snicker** good (I won't give it away). However, you'll notice that the ONLY person who seems to bleed in this movie is the Punisher. Towards the end it gets a little more bloody, but let's just say that when this movie appears on TV, there won't be much editing required. After being totally spoiled (or soiled) by Tarentino's Kill Bill Vol. 1, Punisher seems very weak.
"Would you recommend this movie?" Sure... why not? I enjoyed myself. Even though it wasn't as good as Spider-Man or X-men (even those movies strayed from their source material) it was way, WAY better than "Daredevil" or "HULK" (did those movies refer to any source material?")
As I said, it might disappoint hard-core Punisher fans, but it is a good movie overall (3 out of 5 stars)
Murray C.And another take on it from someone far less in tune with what the filmmakers were doing...
Hi Harry
You’ve posted a couple things from me before. I would write more often but it’s usually enough just to handle my own weekly workload, and some of your spies consistently beat me by a day or two. Anyway I went to a press screening of the Punisher last Friday, or at least that’s what was they called it in the opening credits. What I saw was more like “the adventures of Frank Castle and his wacky neighbors” mixed up with a watered down tropical spin on Death Wish.
I will admit that The Punisher has never been my personal favorite, but I did read both titles fairly regularly in the late eighties/early nineties, and I think I understand what works about the character. I wish I could say the same for director Jonathon Hensleigh, who so badly bungles the very bedrock notions, it gave me a new found appreciation of Ang Lee, and made me thank the movie gods that Hensleigh never got his hacky mitts on the jolly green giant. I can’t really talk about what went wrong without dropping some major spoilers so be advised, they’ll be coming fast and furious.
We start off with Thomas Jane in a bad blond wig, posing as a Euro trash arms dealer in an FBI sting set up to nab some members of the Howard Saint crime family. For reasons that are never clear the bust goes bad and Saint’s youngest son gets gunned down by the feds, leaving a grieving Saint searching for a scapegoat, and with a couple bribes he manages to get the name of an undercover federal agent without the help of Robert Novak. Meanwhile the entire Castle family has gathered in Puerto Rico for a family vacation before Frank moves his wife and son to the relative safety of London. While daddy Roy Schieder is showing off his gun collection to Jane a truck load of goons shows up and starts blasting the bejeezus out of the kinfolk. Frank gets off a few shots but can’t save anyone, and we’re talking twenty or thirty yuppie corpses littering up the veranda. The baddies finally corner Frank on a dock, and instead of putting a bullet in his head, they decide to blow up the dock, giving him a chance to survive and be rescued by a kindly rasta fisherman. A bearded and limping Castle then returns to the unattended crime scene and retrieves his Dad’s guns which of course have been left laying around by the incompetent Puerto Rican cops. The fisherman then tells Frank to “go with god” to which he pithily replies “God’s going to sit this one out” So far so good I suppose. Eventually our boy drags his ass back to Tampa [yes, Tampa! ] where he moves into a warehouse loft full of quirky slackers, paints his GTO black and starts downing bottles of Wild Turkey by the case. Next they lift a pretty funny scene right out of the John Romita JR drawn issue of “War journal” that came with the Marvel legends figure, where a lackey gets tied up and pretend tortured with blowtorch and a Popsicle. After that we are treated to some seemingly endless slapstick shenanigans with Joan [ marvel go to girl Rebecca Stamos] and Mr. Bumpo [funnyman and noted fatso John Pinette] and Spacker Dave[Six feet under's Ben Foster]. Then comes perhaps the single stupidest scene in this history of a comic book movies, where Frank walks right up to the cops the feds and the press, and in front of everyone announces his plan to turn Saint and his boys into hamburger helper. This bit is unforgivably brainless, as is the complete absence of any member of the Tampa police force or F.B.I or even the fire department for the remainder of the fucking movie. This one scene tainted everything else for me, being completely and heinously out of character. The Punisher is in the line of The Lone Ranger and the Spirit, guys who gain their power through resurrection, who can act out side the system because they are as good as dead, guys who scare criminals by becoming myths and rumors. This Punisher has his goddamn face all over the nightly news. He then raids Saint’s downtown office building in costume and tosses several million dollars into the street for the pedestrians to fight over. A nice touch for Robin Hood populism, but probably not something a wrathful spirit of vengeance would fuck around with. Meanwhile John Travolta tries hard to look disinterested and ends up sleepwalking through, which I suppose is better than his over the top non kosher bombast like in shit like Swordfish. There’s a lot of time devoted to the internecine squabbling of the crime family, and Frank develops an elaborate scam [involving a fake fire hydrant, don’t ask] to get them fighting amongst each other, instead of just blowing their damn heads off.
When not drinking and brooding Castle fends off the occasional hit man, including one yutz who actually serenades him with a country/folk song. The fight with Kevin Nash has a cool retro brutality to it, and Nash takes more convincing bumps in two minutes than in the last two years of his WCW contract. Enjoyable yes, but it seemed more like something that would happen to Martin Riggs or John McClane, not as snake eating black ops shit kicker like Castle, who would have gouged out the big asshole’s eyeballs and been done with it. Basically the Punisher as we know him doesn’t show up until the last reel when he really starts dishing out the pain, before that he spends most of the picture conflicted and sad, and aside from the jet black Fonzie haircut pretty much unrecognizable. Taken on it’s own this film is an entertaining, if flawed and deeply logic impaired revenge yarn, but for the fan boys it’s not their Punisher, despite the attempted nods to Garth Ennis. A decade ago this would have been good enough for a movie from “the house of ideas“ but now the bar has been raised too high.
Throw me a steel banana, cause I’m Mechakong. And one last one...
Hey guys,
If you choose to run this review, call me "Cohete"
Who of you out there are looking forward to seeing [b]The Punisher[/b]? Judging from the hands raised it looks like there's a handful of you... but all of you appear doubtful on whether or not this film can deliver the goods.
Let me just tell you, having seen it this evening, this film is truly unforgettable. ...Unforgettably BAD. My word, I went in expecting a drama with a lot of comic book action. What I got was a comedy...and not purposely so! In the film's defense, the group I saw this with was a comedic bunch so it was almost like mystery science theater (it was a private screening so don't worry... we didn't screw up someone else's experience). The events that occur in this film are so rediculously stupid you can't take this movie seriously. And I'm not saying you can enjoy it like Kill Bill or anything... it is OBSURD. Not even Arnold Schwarzenegger can make this film work, and to be perfectly honest, I REALLY did want this film to work. If I tell you how Frank Castle comes across his skull t-shirt in the film, you'll probably nod in agreement "yah, that's pretty stupid."
So what's my background with The Punisher you ask? Well, I never really read any of the comics but I believe I know enough about the character from reading Spider-Man and collecting Marvel cards as a kid. With that said, I went in to witness the story of Frank Castle with an open mind. Whatever changes were made to the comic, I really wouldn't be able to tell. I went in to enjoy a movie, and boy did I ever. I swear we were snickering and laughing early into the movie. I can tell that we were all TRYING to hold it in for the life of us, but once someone broke the silence, it was over.
I'm going to save you from any spoiler info but there really isn't anything to spoil. But I'm sure you all are wondering about John Travolta's character of Howard Saints. If you hated Travolta before, you're going to hate him still, and perhaps even more so. Yup, this is another lousy performance that makes him that much creepier. I gotta say though, Travolta's last scene in the movie has got to be one of the funniest things ever. I don't want to give it away, but it's worth seeing again just for that alone.
Onto the rest: Thomas Jane is actually decent as the lead but his character and the entire film, for that matter lacks focus. Well it actually doesn't lack focus, just everything else. We follow the events unfold from scene to scene without any real emotion. It just happens. The film is pretty much on auto-pilot the entire two hours, which makes it that much easier to crack jokes during the movie.
Many people have asked me the question: how violent is it? Pretty disgustingly violent. It's not so much the blood but the acts depicted are so incredibly brutal that it's far more painful to watch than Passion of the Christ! I'm not talking about a long torture sequence here but rather about horrible and rediculous ways to kill another being, one right after another. There are other hideous acts of violence but I won't spoil them here.
Wrapping things up, is The Punisher worth your time? Only if it's "bad movie night" with a bunch of your drinking buddies. Otherwise, this movie is a horrible piece of garbage. I definitely felt like I was punished for sitting in on this one. So the question now is this: who should be punished for making this crappy movie in the first place? And what about a sequel you ask? The end is perfectly set up for one...
Go see Kill Bill vol 2 instead.
Grade: 4/10 :thumbdown:Thanks, guys. Just one more week till everyone gets to check it out for themselves...
"Moriarty" out.

Actually, I thought Daredevil was pretty true to the comics, whether you loked it or not. Back off first posters.
-
i meant "...liked it or not". As far as the Punisher goes, Thomas Jane made one hell of a Mickey Mantle.
-
So is it violent or not, some reviews make it out like its all guns blazing and people falling down with no holes in 'em and some act like its all blood and guts. What gives?
-
Love that Spider-Man 2 trailer! Definitely not obsurd!

Who's bright idea was it to open this the same day as Kill Bill
by osmosis jones
Okay, let's release OUR R-rated revenge movie the same day as Tarantino's highly-anticipated R-rated revenge movie. The only difference is that one has a chick killing people, and the other has a dude (with a silly skull on his chest). I *may* see this, but I'll need a lot of good reviews.
-
Now matter how "good" they could have made a The Punisher movie, it'll always be seen as derivative of previous revenge/action movies, besides having the skull symbol on his chest, by the general movie audience. So it's probaly best going in and realizing that there will be nothing new under the sun. It looks like this movie will only appeal to fans of the comics... in particular fans of Garth Ennis's take on him... and who can swallow the switch from N.Y. to Florida. Being a fan of The Punisher comics since the mid-80's, I'm definitely giving it a chance. Garth Ennis's vision of The Punisher is entertaining and at least there won't be any bad CGI.
-
oh look, someone who doesnt like the movie whores out KillBill in the last sentence, how fucking predictable fanboy ass eater

Clearly planted reviwe. this guy never even saw the Punisher. "I don't want to give away any spoilers??!!" Why doesn't someone who saw this movie give him some spoilers so he could actually review it? Say hi to Harvey for me dipshit.

i just want to go on record saying that i read the adapted book, and if this movie plays out at all like it, then we are all in for a treat. sure there were changes made to the punisher mythos, but reasonably so. first of all, who wants to see some crusty old man playing the part of a man with a young son. it's almost gross to think about. this i san origin story, and some liberties must be taken to make it modern. as for the movie not being set in new york? who cares! don't we have anough comic book hero, anti hero, whatever stories that clutter up the new york landscape? too many people put too much stock in what critics say anyway. if i made a movie that got 2 thumbs down from ebert roeper, i would proudly display it on the cover of the dvd. also, how many times did you read what the naysayers abover were saying. "i'm not really a punisher fan" i never really read the punisher before". you are taking the word of a bunch of people who wouldn't know how closely the source material was being followed. don't listen to these naysayers. i recall many critics saying how much they hated hellboy. they had never read the comics so they must be the experts right? i fucking dug that movie a lot! all i am saying is watch it for yourself, and make your own conclusions. i refuse to be dissappointed by it even though i hate john travolta and his scientology spewing retardedness. and another thing, when are people going to realize that tarantino isn't as great as everyone thinks he is? can't you see that he is taking other peoples ideas and twisting them so it looks original. kill bill for instance. it's the punisher story with a girl instead of frank castle. wow, how cutting edge and original. the hulk was a shit burger with flies. mostly due to ang lee. i knew from the start that i would hate it(which i did.) i loved daredevil, and one talk backer said it perfectly. it followed the source material quite closely. there were a few shitty cgi moments, but whatever. it didn't drag the movie down. x-men was way overrated. i liked it, i didn't love it, i liked it. spider-man, despite the obvious changes, was an excellent movie. so to all of you negative nit wits out there, give it a chance. you might be surprised at how stupid critics really are. you may also realize that they need to go back to licking the balls of those who make crappy indie movies and foreign fan fare shit. quit your bitching. testicleez out.

The last couple of years have been filled with shitty pg-13 rated pussy ass action films, and they all sucked. This comes along with brutal violence and lots of gun action. Well then I am set and I'll see it when it comes out because the better it does the studios may make more R rated action movies. So this up coming April I will see Punisher, KB vol. 2, and Man on Fire... Support R rated movies before we all become mindless pussies with pg and pg-13 rated movies!!!

I get so depressed when I read people trashing "The Hulk". Bobody wants stories or characters anymore, they just want action. However much they strayed from the source material (even Peter Jackson did this, guys - have you ever tried to write an adaptation of something? It's not as easy as you might thing), for me Ang Lee captured the spirit of "The Hulk", which has always been a personal favorite of mine. So, to each his own, but I loved "The Hulk."

C'mon, Frank is suppossed to be scary looking. A guy that if you come across him you'll know he'll beat your ass and send your head to your mom via FEDEX. Oh yeah, I do have a problem with the Florida location also. Fuck it! I will go as far as to say that Sly should have been The Punisher. He's got the look and still buff. He's old enough to be a Nam Vet. I'll still see it though...I agree that we need more R rated action flicks.
-
Yah, that's pretty stupid. I don't know how this movie will turn out. Although for someone who sure likes sticking it to bad movies, an example of these scenes that were so incredibly stupid that you and your sarcastic friends had an awesome time trying not to laugh at them would have been nice.

oh boo hoo the films not set in new york ... boo hoo the punisher isnt 7 feet tall .. boo hoo he's not a vietnam veteran. GET THE FUCK OVER IT. It seems like the film makers have crafted a nice little revenge flick that stays true to the punisher, and I for one cant wait to watch it. any film maker than can actually make john travolta "act" (there are only a notorious few) is all right by me. See you naysayer shmucks at the movies cuz even tho u've bitched and moaned for the last 7 months your sill gonna watch the movie. So just shut the fuck up and watch it when it comes out

and I'm there. On Friday. At 11:00am. I am a HUGE Punisher fan and have been since the 80s. I don't care if it's in NY or FL, I perfectly understand WHY it had to be updated. A doddering Frank Castle from Vietnam hobbling after the bad guys just doesn't sound scary. I love that it's based on Ennis's Punisher. Can't wait to see Spacker Dave, Bumpo and Joan the mouse (although Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is hardly mousy). Ennis reinvented the character in bad need of updating. I have the comic version of the movie; I thought it was great. I bought the novelization today and will read it tonight.

by gere's assgerbil
It may indeed suck, but to me The Punisher is the only superhero-type movie coming out this year that actually looks interesting. No silly red make-up or bad CGI. Just a trademark T-shirt and a shitload of guns. How refreshing.
-
...That's a pretty good fuckin shake. I will see BOTH Punisher AND Kill Bill II opening weekend.
-
It's you fuckers who keep Roland Emmerich employed...
-
is that Ang Lee took what is considered the most simplistic character in the Marvel U and made a quite complex film out of him. Is that a bad thing?? I must be confused or something cause I loved it.

In Hollywood, ... the Punisher story is kind of "old hat", so-to-speak. But in any case, it should be a compelling one. There is enough Punisher comic book history to develop a very good movie, if not a great one. (I loved the Mike Baron stuff. And "Microchip" is one of my favorite supporting characters in comics, ... at least, when Mike Baron was writing.) Anyway, ... I really don't know how Hollywood could make a movie like this without cool visual style, ... or to be better said, why would they? -- (Exaggerated tone) Oh, ... I get it. They're trying to pull us fan-boys in. -- It makes you want to grab Hollywood around the noggin and knock, "Hello, McFly??? HEEELLLLOOOOOOO, ... is ANYONE in there???" -- The Punisher, as a character, has a small bit of similarity to Batman (my favorite). And just as EVERY Batman movie should, every Punisher movie should ALSO have interesting visuals. There should be a true artistry to complement (hopefully) a good story. -- ARE YOU LISTENING, HOLLYWOOD??? -- I understand that "THE PUNISHER" movie was made for a fairly low budget (it LOOKS like it) ... but other than the fact that they shot this in Miami (of ALL places for a Punisher film), I don't see how it kept them from gaining "SEVEN" style of cinematography (at night). I haven't seen the film, ... but it appears that too much happens during daylight hours. -- Where is the interesting (or "cool") use of shadow and silloutte, with the Skull showing on the Punisher's chest)??? Can SOMEBODY tell me why Hollywood continues to "not GET it" way too often??? -- GOD, ... I've ALWAYS wanted to be a filmmaker, believing myself to be a true visionary. I could do this. -- HHHHeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyy, ... hey, hey, hey, ... wouldn't it be cool if some Hollywood studio decided that they wanted to give some lucky "TALKBACK" person here a REAL shot at making a superhero flick, ... to "put-up or shut-up" ... to see if he (or she) REALLY seems to grasp what it takes to "do it right", ... under a studio's watchful (but hopefully, not wrongful) eye??? Imagine, ... giving a comic book geek (like myself) a chance to show Hollywood up, ... to show that YES, maybe we ARE worth listening to. Imagine some Hollywood studio giving one of "us" a DREAM project. Could you imagine the publicity on this thing??? I'm one of the most introverted people you could ever meet. But you know what??? I say, "Pick me!!! Pick me!!! Pick ME!!!!!" I would do it in a heartbeat (...after confirming with my wife). But the studio would have to allow me to shy away from the news media, as I hate being in front of cameras. (Only "behind the camera", for me.) How I would be so proud to represent us so-called "NERDS". Yeah, ... my nerves would be SHOT, ... but still, ... I'd be proud to represent us. Now THAT would be "aintitCOOLnews". (If a Studio had the balls to do it, I'd come forward, if chosen.)

it's not like Batman or Daredevil where the city they live in is an integral part of the character. Take Batman out of Gotham and something is missing. Take Punisher out of New York and he's still the Punisher. he used to live in Jersey anyway

Heres what's wrong with The Hulk, Dare-Devil, and eventually The
by dokkalvar
The Hulk wasn't the simplest character in the Marvel Universe, that title goes to the Punisher. That's what makes Garth Ennis's run so damn interesting. We've seen the revenge story time and time again. We do NOT NEED TO SEE THIS AGAIN!!! Instead Ennis focuses on the man at the end of revenge who is unable to stop. To take it from there is more fresh and ballsy then what's presented in the film adaptation. Here's my beef with the Hulk. Where was this character development everyone is talking about? Betty Ross still overtly loves him, he's still getting funded. So he's surrounded by assholes? He doesn't seem that unstable. There's no motivation for becoming the Hulk other then his genes were tinkered with. Sorry folks, Bruce Banner wasn't ... geeky enough.. wasn't emotionally stunted enough.. wasn't riddiculed enough to necessitate becoming the Jolly Green Giant. As an audience member, I should have been able to internalize the pain felt by Banner as a social outcast and understood his need for emotional release - If I were a genetic mutant maybe I could have felt something for the character presented in Ang Lee's version.
And now DareDevil. It had some of the moves, but where was the motivation here? Was Kingpin supposed to be menacing? Was I supposed to feel something when Electra died? Was this supposed to be anything more then a shameless, Batman rip-off? My problem with both and eventually the Punisher is that they are all made with the best of intentions but eventually get watered down. I blame the studios and the producers... If they can't get it right, hire the comic writers who are trying something new with the characters - -- Or just show some fucking Balls!
Thankfully, hopefully, Chris Nolan has done this. -
The only connections to Garth Ennis in this film are several supporting characters. That does not mean this has captured the spirit of Garth Ennis's Punisher in any way, shape, or form. Garth Ennis understands that Frank Castle is a psychotic serial killer who was fucked in the head well before his family was killed. Hensleigh, on the other hand, has given us a character who's 100% heroic before his family gets iced by people who are clearly bad. As a result, there's no reason for the audience to question what Castle's doing. It gives them all the information they need to to simply root for him. He's really a good guy, and the bad guys deserve it. Which renders an adaptation of the character irrelevant. I believe that, years down the road, people will realize that the spirit of The Punisher was better captured in the admittedly extremely flawed Dolph Lundgren version. At least THAT film recognized that The Punisher is a heartless, sociopathic killer who is beyond redemption. They demonstrated this by having a real good guy - his best friend, Lou Gossett, whom he continually abuses - trying to bring him in. Trying to save him. The message? Revenge is destructive path, both to you and the people around you, should you take it. This new Punisher film has completely missed this. The new Frank Castle is ultimately acting out of "true" righteousness - or, Hollywood righteousness, like we previously
saw in the morally odious GLADIATOR - and that's NOT The Punisher. The Punisher is a question mark. That's why he's best observed next to characters like Daredevil and Spider-Man, who understand that killing in any form is wrong, no matter who the target is. If you don't have that kind of moral compass to provide contrast, you need a writer who GETS The Punisher. Garth Ennis does. Jonathan Hensleigh does not. He's made a standard revenge film that doesn't require you to think about it. In that case, why bother making it? -
Good post, man. You made some salient points. I think that , if any Marvel honchos are browsing the dungeons of AICN at this ungodly hour, they might do well to listen to what you just said. Not to take this and run with it, but I feel like this all comes from the fact that they simply do not take the adequate amount of time to realize their properties. It almost seems like a yard sale gone horribly wrong. I do admire the fact that Avi wants to develop 'Captain America' slowly and surely, but once their foot is firmly in the door, he and Marvel Enterprises might want to consider the same ethic for the rest of their movies.
-
I don't necessarily think that they should paralyze themselves in that regard. 'The Punisher' is set to be an origin story, and for a look at the depths of "punishment" and bitterness one can sink to, it might be well worth a watch. If they take an essence (not THE essence) of a character and use it to make a good movie, then I'm okay with it. Almost all comic book movies tend to feel a little truncated, however.

Can't wait to see it after Hellboy. Over here, seeing a movie costs only $2 or more. And you can stay in the theater all day if you want to. Hahahahaha !

Maybe I will pass on this. And not because of the extra negative reviews provided by these guys who saw it and hated it as well as Harry. It's because of what they told us about it that gives me reason to doubt its worth. Thanks a lot, Harry, but you didn't help by being too general in your criticism and not citing examples we could put our fingers on. THANK YOU, Mechakong, for doing exactly that. Criminy, guess I'll wait one more week for Man on Fire if I want an extra fix of revenge cinema (besides Kill Bill, Vol. 2.) WELL DONE revenge cinema, that is, NOT The Pyoonisher.
