Bombay
SPOILER ALERT !!
Last Sunday’s installment hooked me, but good. All these strangers – Doc Cochran, Seth Bullock, Jane Canary and Bill Hickock – pulling together like an Old West Justice League to outmanuever Swearengen and save yet another stranger? And this week Swearengen’s got a wary new rival setting up right across the street? Between HBO’s “Deadwood,” Showtime’s “The L Word” and ABC’s resurgent “The Practice” (whose plotline is now, suddenly and inexplicably, more compelling to me than that of “Alias”!), Sunday at 10 p.m. is suddenly jammed up with the fun!
Here’s “Dr. Bombay” with the “Deadwood” details:
Deadwood 1.3 FAQ
What's it called?
Deadwood 1.3 FAQ
What's it called?
"Reconnoitering the Rim." What’s the title mean?
It's got something to do with Brom, the rich guy from back east, taking
another crack at drawing something of value from the apparantly
worthless gold claim he purchased in episode 1. In light of this week's
events, however, it might just as well mean "let's see how long it takes Al
Swearengen to murder Brom now that the rich guy's threatening to bring
in muscle in order to recover his money."
Ouch. So what else happens this week?
It's sort of a set-up episode, highlighted by the arrival of the great
Powers Boothe. He joins the cast as Cy Tolliver, owner of a fancy new
saloon/casino/cathouse located directly across the street from
Swearengen's entertainment complex. Tolliver's a cool customer, and he's quick
to recognize a potential enemy in Swearengen. It will be interesting to
see how this develops.
Does Tolliver have the muscle to take on Swearengen?
It isn't clear in this episode, however Tolliver does have a partner
played by legendary actor/writer/illusionist/etc. Ricky Jay. You may know
him as the guy who can throw playing cards like Ninja stars. I don't
think he'll be doing much of that that in this show, though it would be
fun to see him just fire one at some liquored-up goon.
Last week's encounter between Swearengen and Calamity Jane was
memorable. What's the big takeaway moment this week?
An uncomfortable encounter between Wild Bill Hickok and a drunken
loudmouth, who offers the aging legend a chilling preview of his future.Dr. Bombay’s rating for “Deadwood” 1.3?

I say we'll hear 6.

...because I pay for HBO and it's on after the Soprano's. But honestly - it's not doing much for me. And I LOVE westerns! The language is just ridiculous. I'm sorry - but not every person in the old west cursed like an ADD afflicted sailor. Cursing in something like Pulp Fiction fit the vibe - it felt right. About 80% of the cursing in this show makes me either laugh, cringe or wonder what grade vocabulary the writers have (they haven't passed Jr. High yet in the show). It looks nice though and the new characters do intrigue me.
-
Ricky Jay,hell yeah! Seeing how they managed to get this kind of casting depth in place before the show even aired, every decent character actor's gonna be clamoring to get into the second season. Can anyone out there think of another series (non-reality) that got renewed for a second season after airing only 2 episodes?
-
With a few exceptions, the acting in this show is atrocious -- I can't decide if it's the language or not, but almost everyone's delivery seems off. I understand that these characters all have secrets and things that set them off, but there's something to be said for consistency in a character's demeanor. These people are all over the place, and it's making it very hard to sympathize with anyone. (This is especially true of Brad Dourif's character, who seems to act differently every time he appears on-screen.) Right now, I'm more interested in the development of the Jack McCall character. Anyone who knows the history of Deadwood and has kept up with the names of the characters knows that Jack (the doofus at the poker table) eventually kills Wild Bill. I was hoping that the writers would use that as a surprise ending, separate from the rest of the show's events (i.e., establish Jack as cocky but harmless, only to shoot Bill in the back of the head after the heroes had prevailed in the final episode), but it looks like that won't be the case.
-
Six in each episode, going for a total of twelve in the first two weeks. I say we'll hear about that many this week.
-
Despite what many people may believe about things being better in the past, the old west was filled with people using "foul" language. Mark Twain was traveling the old west one time, with a reverand friend. They met a stable hand who used cuss words as adjectives in almost every sentence. This positivly floored Twain, as he witness the stable hand describe the weather to a woman and her young daughter...with neither of them showing shock or contempt. The reverend laughed, because as funny as the situation was, Twain would never have been alowed to publish the conversation at all.

Deadwood has already been renewed for a 2nd season.
-
11 usages, 9 of them by Swearengen. Total so far: 23.
-
HUH?!?!?
-
1) If you don't like it, watch Bonanza on TVLand.
2) It IS historically accurate. As a scholar of Frontier history, many primary accounts (letters, journals, some newspaper articles, penny novels) use exactly this language. Further, it wasn't even related to education; it had more to do with region. The fact was that less "civilized" areas tend to have coarser language as a part of everyday life. I personally give kudos to the producers of Deadwood for not sugar coating a less than pleasant part of reality. -

The first one had me lost, the second one came together a little better, and now this one has got me. People die in every one so far. You COCKSUCKERS! LOL! HBO cares about real entertainment and their fans.
-
I'll catch the replay, because I think this show already rocks and has mad potential....but the sopranos was just too good tonight for a hydrated sopranos enthusiast to handle
-
We've heard them say 'pussy' and 'twat' a bunch of times, but they never used 'cock' as synonym for penis; no other homophobic remarks either...Maybe applying suction to a rooster was frowned upon back then :) I don't think they'd publish the foul language on the newspapers, but of couse I belive abused it; it's not like it's a fucking court or something (and notice how the city dude doesn't curse as much (or at all) as the others). Anyway, I liked the first episode better, because it had a duel.. that was a cool duel.. 2nd ep was kinda lame, the guy was drunk, and Bill just shot him from the seat.. What cocksuckers.
-
you cocksucker. I made sure to do a memory wipe before getting into this show - but i guess that doesnt matter now.........damn you AICN.......you bunch of cocksuckers.
-
This show is progressing awesomely. Lots of stuff happens in every episode, quite the opposite of HBO's other period piece "Carnivale" (which I also love) in pacing. Sucks to see Dapper Dan with the gold claim get his head smashy-smashied, but it means we'll get more Molly Parker involvement, so yay to that. This show bordered on 4 stars for me -- it built a bunch of new story possibilities (what with the gold strike discovery, and the Bella Whatever). Oh yeah, I think there were only two "cocksucker" uttered tonight (both Swearengen). Bunch of "cunt" talk to compensate.
-
why? is it just for the 'first!' posts?
-
People did NOT speak like that, I'm sorry. They may have used curse words - even abundantly - but they did not speak how they are portraying them in the show. EH! Wrong answer!
-
Is this program worth the time of day? Haven't really bothered with it yet. Big fan of Sopranos, Six Ft Under, Shield, etc...

Oh yeah, Herc has run out of free previews. Pretty fucking lame you quit posting about Sopranos after the free ride has dried up. Pathetic.
-
Go fuck yourself. I guess the Pinkertons had quite a rep as Swearengen just about pissed his pants when Garrett brought them up. I don't like the witness to the murder thou. Would have been better if Mrs. Garrett just thought Swearengen did it rather than knowing he did. I wonder how she solicites Bullock to get her revenge... sex or money?
-
...on Friday. Gonna have to watch all three back-to-back and see how it feels. Still hasn't hooked me.

This is the best show to fly outta the boob tube in a long time, and to find out that Deadwood is a real place in history and that AL Swear and the hardware dudes were real people makes it more interesting...What was Clam-ity Jane's function other than being a loud mouth cunt??....For trivia sake, Keith Carradine(Wild Bill) and the dude that owns the Bella Union (Powers Booth)both appeared in a movie called Southern Comfort back in the 80's.........later, you dirty cocksuckers
