Bombay Gives DEADWOOD 1.2 Four Stars!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Young "Dr. Bombay" only gave last week’s series debut three stars. This week’s may be so good we’ll forget about Mia Kirshner and the many other beautiful, nakedly cavorting lesbians molesting each other over on Showtime. But then again, maybe not!
Deadwood 1.2 FAQ
What's it called?
What's it called?
"Deep Water" Last week you suggested that the series really gets going with this
episode. Do you stand by that, Bombay?
Absolutely, on every level. Dramatically, things really come to a head
this week as super villain Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) fights to
protect his evil empire. First, he gets wind that a little girl has survived
the robbery and massacre of her family, which occurred last week. She's
in bad shape, and the Doc (Brad Dourif) says he hasn't got much hope
for her. But Swearengen fears that if the child awakens she'll tell
people that it was not the Sioux who murdered her people, but "road agents"
(aka robbers) who can be traced back to him. Second, an explosive
encounter with Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) - all steely eyes and coiled
fury - firmly establishes this series' chief dramatic conflict going
forward. As Bill O'Reilly might say, who's lookin' out for the little girl?
Doc and Bullock, but especially Calamity Jane. Her character is one of
my favorite things about this show. The occassion of the child's peril
puts Jane through all sorts of turmoil. Listen carefully to her
dialogue. Over the course of the hour we get a clear sense of why she's become
as tough-shelled as she has, and we also gain insight into why she's so
protective of the child. This is a great character among great
characters. Man, if only most of the movies I see had this much subtext. Sounds compelling. But what about those of us who watch a show like
this just for the sick stuff you can't see in most TV series?
This week you will see things no eye was meant to see. Any more spoilers?
Nothing specific from this episode. However I have gleaned what are
probably some future spoilers from the history books. Huh?
Getting interested in this show has caused me to read-up on the real
Deadwood and these characters. Wild Bill Hickok was murdered in Deadwood
and shortly thereafter Seth Bullock became the area's first sheriff.
I've heard someone say that Hickok is killed in the fourth episode or so,
but then sticks around - not as a ghost (God forbid) but as a sort of
imaginary moral compass for Bullock. I also read that Calamity Jane
later came to be regarded as something of a saint in Deadwood for taking
care of many people during a smallpox plague . In this week's episode,
Doc compliments her nursing of the little girl, saying she's got a gift.
Nice George Lucas-style foreshadowing. Another cool example is the
doofy guy who plays cards across the table from Hickok, a seemingly minor
character who annoys him constantly and talks crap behind his back. In
the show his name is Jack McCall. In real life Wild Bill was murdered by
a guy named Jack McCall. Hmmm.

If HBO uses even half of the real shit that went down in Deadwood,we're in for a damn fine treat with this series.

this is getting more and more interesting, but then again I'm a sucker for gritty western shit.

A long time ago, my father, a consumate western fan, brought home our first VCR. He had a few tapes with him, Raiders, Firefox and Silverado. Honestley, I never saw what got my Dad so energized about westerns...'till I saw that movie. It was funny, dirty, action packed and had charachters posessed of that spooky cool so few actors (Eastwood and Glenn being two)can draw forth. Later, I saw Lonesome Dove, The Long Riders, The Searchers and a few others that proved one thing: You can get a feeling with a GOOD western that no other genre can produce. I didn't grow up with Gunsmoke, Bonanza and The Rifleman (among others-but I grew to love them all)- I had to learn from other people in the industry that felt that pure love of the old west and what could be done with it. Before anyone accuses me of Being Harry with an alias (btw...I can't fault the man for depending on his childhood for inspiration-everyone should be so lucky)I come to my point-
Deadwood is AWESOME. It is an unflinching, true look at that time. It works the was The Unforgiven did, in that the actors LOOK like they are there. The Hobbits in Middle Earth? Jackson insisted there be dirt under their fingernails...because there SHOULD be. Here, everyone looks at least two days removed from their last bath (In Calamity Jane's case, maybe two weeks)and the coarse language is as real as the grey wood everything is built from. They have some great actors here who either have been waiting for the right vehicle (Olyphant), are on the verge of a Tarantino-esque revival (Carradine)or are just plain brilliant (McShane).
thing is...I just killed a half bottle of Jack watching the first episode (you need to drink whiskey with this show, that's my own oppinion) and I looooooved it. For anybody looking for a quality drama-see this. For anybody looking for a GOOD western-see this, For anybody looking for something that is just plain f%$#kin' good, see this. You can practically taste the dust... -
By the way...I have no idea why the word "vehicle" came up as a link in my previous post. I didn't intend that, and am as confused as you might be irritated. Also, the work was should obviously be way.
gimme a break, it was a shitload o' whiskey. -
Is it advertised as a mini-series and then HBO's gonna pull some kind of Carnivale shit and extend it until perpetuity and boredom? Or is it straight-up a new show? Anyone? Anyone?
-
Kudos to AICN for giving some column inches to this new program. And I did not realize until I read this synopsis that the events taking place are (presumably) historically-accurate. Just makes me appreciate the show that much more.
-
...this is why I've abandoned network television. Carnivale, Oz, Deadwood...they're all too awesome for words. HBO produces damn fine television (or "produced" in the case of Oz). Can't wait for next week's episode. Also SPOILER SPACE An upcoming episode is called "The Trial of Jack McCall". Could he be on trial for killing Bill? END SPOILER SPACE
-
That's exactly what it's about, though it'll be interesting to see if they let it play out like it really did or condense it to save time since it was a drawn out process. To check out Jack McCall's story try this: http://www.adamsmuseumandhouse.org/answers/jackmccall.html

Yeah, seriously...was it plot necessary to see the greasy drippin danglin dingus of the soon to be dead doofus brother of a a social misfit mental retard who drew down on Bill Hickock despite the fact he was sitting on the equestrian equivalent of a 1860's gettaway car.
This Show Rocks. The calm demeanor and matter of fact way that Hickock and Bullock discuss law enforcement related matters with each other is straight up legit cop banter. The scene where Hickock asks Bullock to cover the friend....SWEEEEET.
I guess that's the direction this thing is going....establishment of law and order and cultural morality in development of modern American society...yadda yadda yadda.......I'm all for that, but let's see more shootin and dirty labia majoras!! -
Thank the Lord for HBO. I wonder if anyone is actually watching this show or will the ratings be as non existent as the numbers for the equally great The Wire and Carnivale. Deadwood will be the first TV-series-on-DVD set I'll ever own.
