New HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN trailer hits!

Published at:  Mar 24, 2004 11:38:50 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know... isn't it great... right about now I'm beginning to get that feeling that this year could be great. After watching ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, JERSEY GIRL, THE LADYKILLERS, HELLBOY, BEFORE SUNSET, LOVE ME IF YOU DARE and KILL BILL VOLUME 2... well - the dry heave start of the year is behind me... That's seven films that I absolutely love and hell man... it's still MARCH! Now sure, I've been lucky enough to see films that are beginning in April and May and even July... but still... the knowledge that these films are of this year and are as great as they are... well that's a comfort that is rare. Add to that, the feeling I'm getting from lots of cool trailers out there... even films that scare the piss out of me like ALIEN VS PREDATOR... well... things seem cool. Take a look at the new HARRY POTTER trailer that The Leaky Cauldron links to... Cuaron shows an elegance and emotional resonance that really really shines through even the quickest of trailers. I love it. One reader sent me this link saying, "Thank God For Mexican Directors!" to that, I can only say Amen. Here ya go...

Oh wait, wrong talkback. They should forget the first two movies and call this "Harry Potter 1: We Finally Got A Decent Director". Ok, ok, that's too harsh. They should stop making movies all together, and start calling these things Magic People That Live Inside The Devil Machine.

    Newell??

    by sharpel007

In an article he says this about his directin of GOF(Goblet of Fire)"I won't be churning out a bland studio product." He says: "You find a way to make this stuff your own and you find, wonderfully enough, that that's exactly what the studio want. The studio doesn't want a homogenised thing. They're perfectly happy to have each of the films directed by somebody different, and so should look different and be different. So I'm surprisingly happy."

Im kind of uneasy with Newell at the helm, sure Four Weddings was great, and so was Donnie Brasco. But Mona Lisa?? He has said he wants to follow Alfonsos lead, but will he. At least there will be a British director finally, just not Terry Gilliam.

    by delusionally ret

I love the Lord of the Ring movies but i still have to say that I felt more excited and entertained with the Harry Potter movies. I hated the ending of the first HP movie but it still does take away from the whole picture, the second HP movie rocked!!! I guess it could be because Peter Jackson method to make the LOTRS was in a documentry vien and HP is true story telling at its best not trying to be anything that it is not. anyway let my burning begin.

Home Alone versus A Little Princess

    by jollysleeve

I totally agree with everyone saying that finally, it's nice that these films get the talents of a "real" director. Man, it's not that Chris Columbus is bad. It's just that he's not actually good. I mean, I can't think of one movie he's directed where I can honestly say that it was anything more than mediocre. At least he's consistant. ..........The one thing thoough about the new director that worries me is this: I don't imagine he'll have complete creative freedom to do as he chooses. It's not like he's got Spielberg's power. So I fear that his vision/talents will be slightly compromised for this movie. I mean, he's got the Executive Producer, Chris Columbus looking over his shoulder. And then, right behind Columbus, he's got Warner Bros. as back-seat drivers. And then right behind them, there's JK Rowling. As I say, this Little Princess dude sort of has his hands.

    Re: From Beyond

    by jollysleeve

FromBeyond, you're right that Spielberg isn't as consistent as he used to be. I truly believe that Spielberg has a genius talent for filmmaking, but his movies as of late all seem to have some fatal flaw, or miscalculation in presentation to make them "oh, what could have been" movies. However, I don't believe that his current lackluster track-record is due to his great industry power. I think it's just the natural result of his getting older; his interests and sensibilities have changed. And I also think that maybe settling down with a family has quelled some of the fire in his belly......... Still, whenever Spielberg comes out with a new movie, I still get a little excited, because I know there's a slim chance that it could literally be one of the best movies ever made, just like in the olden days when he'd knock one out of the park nearly every time. And if it's not a great movie, then it will at least have some great elements or scenes in it. Contrast that with the workman-like Chris Columbus. When he comes out with a new movie, not only do I not think it could potentially be a masterpiece, I KNOW that it won't be. Let's cross our fingers that the stars will align for this Mexican dude.

R.C.'s opinion on Harry Potter III

    by r.c. the "wise"

I've never read the books but I was pleasantly surprised and entertained by the first two films. Simple put, they were terrific.

This new film looks phenomenal! The director may have very well created a Masterpiece.

It's sort of peculiar to me that I'm this anxious to see a film intended for an audience ten years younger than me, but who cares I'm down! Word!

By the way, several of you fools seriously, need help. My suggestion is to step away from the computer, step outside, breathe fresh air for a change, and.....gasp!....talk to a member of the opposite sex.

I'm sure it will be nerve-racking but I assure you it's extremely refreshing and invigorating. Those who dare accept this challenge should try and go for the next step...asking a girl for her number. Perhaps I'm asking to much. Baby steps.

Trailer Change in Tone & Werewolf Sighting!

    by rowsby

The first HP trailer for this film seemed quite dark and mysterious. I liked it a lot and clicked my thumbs joyfully in expectation. But this second one feels completely different and verges on pure slapstick. It makes me feel anxious and concerned. The thumb clicking had stopped. I read the book and don't recall the bus scenes being this goofy. Hopefully the actual film is better balanced than this newest trailer leads me to think.

The third book was much darker over all then the first two. I hated the first one; it's pure Cinderella. This movie should hopefully reflect the progression twards more serious matters as the kids continue to age.

Also, I caught a glimpse of the (hopefully unfinished) CG Werewolf with Ron cut into the 'roar' for comedic effect. The CG creature appeared to have little to no hair, so perhaps the render times are killing them, or they went cheap like they did in "Underworld"? Buckbeak, Moony, the Stag and Padfoot will be eating up a fair chunk of screen time if they follow the book, so I hope the involved production studios can pull off all these character effects believably.

Fluffy the three headed dog from the first film had a nice sense of presence and even though the werewolf in this new clip had ears that reminded me a lot of Doby (ick), I hope to see work that surpasses what we've already seen in the previous 2 HP films. LOTR and WETA proved it was possible to take a CG character and raise it beyond a mere effect, into the realm of being a legitimate actor. So, I'm still looking forward to seeing what this film brings, dispite this new trailer.

The bar has been raised, can you limbo?

    by robe

Here we go again, Tim Hunter is hardly original. Writer Terry Pratchett created a character called Ponder Stibbons who is a dark haired, glasses wearing wizard (Discworld Moving Pictures). Also both Tim Hunter (DC Books of Magic) and Ponder Stibbons are predated by boy wizard Luke Kirby in the (published 1988) 2000AD story Summer Magic. Boy wizards are nothing new. If JKR had copied Tim Hunter the obvious thing for her to do would be drop the glasses and give Harry Potter blonde hair, then nobody would notice a thing.

As for the trailer I love it, as for Alfonso Cuaron the sooner he is gone the better unfortunately Mike Newell has made comments that have got me worried. On the bright side Newell's comments have really got all the Alfonso Cuaron lovers really really worried as well, so that is one plus point for him anyway.

    Emma Watson ...

    by itchy

guys, fess up - she's hot now. You just can't touch it for a few years. Independant of that fact, I'm somewhat impressed with how well she pulls off the role - very centered and very determined.

Well guess what fuckwits considering teh fucking films are both in the top 10 grossing, I said he did a bang up job.

They don't want a re-imagining, or the directors vision, trhe material is there, a template ah la LOTR on how to film based upon a book is there.

We don't need Potter for the MTV/RAP 10 second attention span generation.

Now please fuck off, becuase I cane feel my IQ dropping repeating myself to you fucking Cretins!!

    Potter trailer

    by treadhead

Good trailer-- I watched it three times just to see Hermione punch out Malfoy. And, yes, Emma Watson is growing up-- but it's one thing to notice it, and it's another to drool over it, guys. (And if anybody over here in the US of A is contemplating that 16-is-the-age-of-consent in Britain business, remember, you can be prosecuted in the States for things like that that you do overseas, even if it's legal there).

One question I have-- is it a different actor playing Malfoy? If it is he seems to have gone through a major growth spurt.

And look on the bright side-- if you don't like Chris Columbus, it could have been worse. The first two films could have been directed by Michael Bay (in which case I would have had to blind myself in despair).

    fevruil is a moron

    by maniack

Excuse me, fevruil. The way you're ranting on it is a wonder that you can even string an understandable sentence together. Just what is all this "...Harry Potter for the hip-hop/MTV generation that you seem to have seen. Did you even watch the trailer or did your blind, drunk uncle just describe to you what he thought it might be. I actually did watch the trailer and loved it. I must have missed the part you saw where Harry, decked out in gold, pulls up to Hogwarts in his magical pimp-mobile and says, "Yo yo yo. I got the bling-bling fo' yo ass! Fo-shizzle!" Dumbass.

it is the same actor playing Malfoy. He is older, yes, but that hair is what threw me off guard at first. He looks a lot different without it all slicked back like before.

    So excited

    by ribbons

It's okay if you think less of me, but that trailer makes me as giddy as a schoolgirl. The swelling music and the "Expecto Patronum" thing at the end, mwah. And please, let's not compare this movie to others. It's not worth all the drama. And Cuaron had a lot of creative control, I'd say; he got rid of robes and modernized the clothes without any public objections from Chris Columbus. By the way, I've come around on that issue. I still hold that it will date the movie, no matter how careful you think they were in choosing chronologically ambiguous "cool clothes" (to which I say "impossible"), but I think that it helps underscore the fact that these kids are maturing and getting older more than another round of Dockers khakis and red-knit sweaters could. And Rowling was obviously (relatively) okay with it, so any book thumpers concerned about sacrilege might wanna let that one drop. By the way, is there any word on whether or not Naomi Watts is really set to play a character in the series? If so it would be a controversial move, since it would contradict Rowling's credo that actors were to be mined exclusively from Britain. I'm sure a lot of American actors who think they can affect good British accents will be steamed.

    Columbus

    by robe

Sorry to upset all you Chris Columbus haters but he is the producer of POA and will be producing GOF, both his HP movies grossed nearly 2 billion Dollars worldwide in cinemas alone. Alfonso Cuaron did this one movie and turned down the chance to direct GOF (or so he says). While I like a lot of what he has done for this movie for example the dementors rock, I for one will be glad to see the back of him. This is going to upset the Cuaron Cult members who seem to think HP can't exist without Cuaron, strange all five novels and the two previous movies did fine without him. Some of them want Newell sacked and Cuaron brought back not only to do GOF but remake the previous movies (a bit difficult as the teenage cast have all hit puberty).

    Professor Trelawney

    by treadhead

Ok, you guys can start throwing things and calling me names, but it took several viewings of the trailer for me realize that Prof. Trelawney is played by Emma Thompson. She's practically buried under the (very effective) makeup. And now I'm in trouble-- reading the books, I never thought of Telawney as an object of desire, but now, with Emma Thompson (certifiably one of the 10 most gorgeous women on the planet) in the part, I'm suddenly having all these thoughts....

I still don't get where the hell this mtv/rap thing comes from, makes no sense. And what's with the comments about wanting to see Cuaron go? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you haven't even seen the damn movie yet. (and so far everything we've seen has blown away the first two)

    fevriul the town idiot

    by maniack

You can always tell when someone has been truly insulted and doesn't know what the hell their going to do now. fevriul couldn't believe someone would be able to point out the exact reasons he was an idiot so when it actually happened his mind shut down and all he could retort with was saying he'd fuck my mother. Hmmmm. You know, that stings. Oh, yes. I feel the pain. Ow ow ow. I have been burned by the master of comebacks: fevriul. His witty and oh so original reply really put me in my place. I shall never make fun of him again. Of course fevriul is such a moron that I bet he won't even be able to see that this post was dripping with any more saurcasim, it'd be classified as a tropical storm.
