Famous Mortimer's Seen UPN's GAME OVER!!

Published at:  Mar 10, 2004 9:35:35 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Is it “Reboot” crossed with “South Park”? Or something else entirely?

TV Guide says:

“Debut: A family of video-game characters leads a normal life once the game is turned off in this computer-generated comedy. First up: The Smashenburn family gets an ill-mannered pet, which soon causes problems.”

Beloved Coaxial spy “Famous Mortimer” says:

“Saw a few episodes of the new UPN show "Game Over." Mom and dad have day jobs as characters in video games but hey, we've got kids to take care of and bills to pay and you get the idea. The nice thing is that the guys who made the show obviously get and love games. Aside from the expected mom-as-Laura-Croft-character and Dad-as-race-car-driver-guy character, there are plenty of neat little nods to other games in each episode. The world of the show is well built, too it's sorta reminiscent of "Reboot" except a lot more polished. God knows there's enough to make fun of as far as video games go. Hopefully the show will get a chance. ”

Variety says:

“With enough toilet and booty humor to keep anklebiters giggling, toon could serve well as a younger-skewing lead-in to reruns of "The Mullets" on Wednesday nights. … Show would be better to drop the traditional sitcom stylings and instead go for broke with the vulgar humor. If the show veers more toward Fox/Comedy Central's "The Family Guy" and away from the familiar primetime sitcom, look for the critical college aud to make it a cult fave. …”

What does The Hollywood Reporter say?

“represents a clever idea that's executed well yet still isn't very funny. … the comedy feels somehow derivative and blah even as the concept itself plays as generally original. … an almost textbook example of what happens when more attention is paid to the gimmick than to the story. The second-episode teleplay from Sacks is somewhat better but still lacking in terms of humor. …”

8 p.m. Wednesday. UPN.

It’s “Wonderfalls” Week!! Herc says it’s the season’s best new show!! 9 p.m. Friday!! Fox!!

I am – Hercules!!

    What about Tripping the Rift?

    by jtylor

Caught that last night and it's reasonably funny. It's absurdist in all the right ways.

Yeah, tripping the rift wasn't too stupid

    by terry_1978

It kind of had that Johnny Bravo-esque kind of humor...abstract, weird, and so on. I heard about Game Over, and Patrick Warburton and Lucy Liu are the voices of the parents....should be interesting to hear them play off each other.

I like what they have planned for the neighbors (semi-spoilerish

    by frankdrebin

On one side are the Changs, a family of generic ninjas, who spontaneously attack (like Kato in the Pink Panther films, I'm hoping). On the other is FPS Guy ("first person shooter")--you only see him from his point of view: a gun barrel. Also, I read that Lara Croft will make an appearance later in the season but, as you gamers out there know, it's about 2 bad movies and 2 bad games too late for her to help the show.

    Saw it

    by ben dobyns

While the sitcom structure is fairly predictable, the warped situations and nods to classic video games are pretty funny. My favorite is a gag that references Frogger. There's also the strangest version of Fiddler on the Roof that I'ver ever seen in the third or fourth episode. I suspect that this is one of those shows that would really take of if UPN renewed it, as that would give the creators more of a license to go wild with the concept and move away from sitcom tidiness. It's worth checking out.

    It's been censored

    by walker66

It's been censored due to Janet Jackson's breast.

Artie Lange from the Howard Stern is the voice of the dog.
He said UPN was panicking and made them come back and redo some lines of dialog at the last minute because they were afraid of the FCC.

They also had to cut some cartoon (rear) nudity out, even though Homer Simpsons butt is seen regularly on The Simpsons. Even Bart Simpsons butt is shown sometimes. OH MY GOD KIDDY PORN!!! FINE THEM A MILLION DOLLARS!!!

As far as the dialog goes they changed "numbnuts" to "numbnads" and "breaking balls" to "breaking chops".

Pretty soon everything on TV will be like Sesame Street and Mister Rogers. Welcome to America, new home of the Taliban.

Why would they be called the Changs?

  • Before I actually met the ex-girlfriend who was of korean descent, I was in that exact same camp, sad to say...which is ironic, as I would hate someone to say to me "all you black people are the same and interchangeable." The cast for this one seems pretty interesting though, comes on in about 15 min., hope it's worth it.

Game Over = Best Comedy of 2004.

    by zone zero

You've read it here first! I was laughing through most of it. Only the commercials stopped my streak.

First time I've watched TV on Wednesday night, and I liked what I saw.

(And there wasn't any censoring from what I saw.)

    Re: "Chang Family" controversy...

    by frankdrebin

Turns out every reviewer got it wrong: the Changs aren't ninjas, they're Shaolin monks. So they ARE Chinese, not Japanese. (Except, can monks marry?)

GAME OVER might be the most appropriately named show, ever.

    by rufus_t_firefly

Fast overnight ratings placed this one DEAD LAST in a night packed with reruns (a 1.4/2 share). Comparatively, it makes even a Nielsen stink-bomb like ENTERPRISE look like ratings gold. My guess is, UPN won't drop in another quarter.

    Stupid Variety fucks

    by stalking_goat

Whatever happened to fact checking? It would take about 5 seconds to go to the Comedy Central's website and find no mention of Family Guy ever. It would take even less time to go to a Family Guy fan site and find out it aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim segment. But this is the kind of quarter assed attitude the media brings to anything that doesn't have Jackson, J.Lo or Lacy Peterson in the headline.

    sloppy journalism

    by wingnut1a

On my cable system, Comedy Central and Cartoon Network are right next to each other, so it might have been an honest (although careless) mistake. ... And about the ninja/shaolin monk thing, I guess that instead of all Asian cultures being interchangeable in the minds of the ignorant, it is just the legendary Asian warrior types that are interchangeable. =) Ninja, Shaolin, Samurai... whatever.

The ratings were near the botom for Game Over?

Probably alot of people didn't knwo it was on. The ads for the show weren't exactly out there where people coud see them.

    Ratings...

    by mad_radhu

Like they are accurate anyway. I mean how can a show really "win" a timeslot when my wife and I, for example, watched That 70's Show while taping this one. According to Nielson, That 70's Show would have won the timeslot, but my wife and I wound up actually watching both shows. I swear they need to start pulling some of the viewership numbers out of the Tivos now and find some way to statistically average them in to the traditionally measured ratings to get a more accurate result.

    I'd give it another go,

    by duh

I liked it. It sure as hell was better than anything else I've seen on UPN these days . I'd like to see more "video game" touches like life bars,, ppower pellets etc, but having Abe sneak past was a nice nod to the gamers, it didnt feel "advertising" like, so Ill give it a couple more watches. I hope it doesn't become a big commercial but more like Roger Rabbit where all the characters of that genre live happily together.
