Trailer for ALIEN VS PREDATOR Goes Online And It Looks Cool!'!

Published at:  Mar 09, 2004 9:01:36 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here - just saw the trailer and I'm not above saying... Damn this looks cool! I may not be a fan of Paul W.S. Anderson... Hell, I might have a strong dose of hatred for his films, but I like this trailer. I just hope the film delivers the atmosphere shown here and that they have a score instead of loud clangy industrial junk that usually seems to permeate his films. This looks possibly cool... let's hope!

Harry,

Just a quick FYI, Apple has posted a new Internet-only trailer for AVP

Sanaa Lathan in a tank top....hurt me, baby

    by terry_1978

I like how they're going somewhat old school with most of the creature effects being animatronic, but CGI I would have no qualms with, either. That last shot of the drooling alien solider facing the predator in dangerously close proximity...classic comic book cover.

    by cellardoor

I don't like that it's set in the present and I'm worried about them pussifying the Predators. I don't want them to be 'good guys', as such. The notion of Weyland being the Machine face for future Synthetics is pretty cool though, and well, dammit, its Aliens...Versus Predators. Now if only we could get a mega-budget comics crossover movie going, Spidey joins the x-men, Batman & Hellboy take on the Cthulu cult, Mystery men vs narrative structure. Oh, I'm SO funny.

Maybe it still there, last time i checked, anyway :

And by the way, for that we see, I think it still to early to talk about it, we saw eggs, face-eggers, ans a few predator, including one with a new "bone-head" facial armour...
Still looking to me like a small budget b-movie , ripp-off of both Alien and The Thing, for the antartic part...
No SF...No "big guns", nor big effects, just a few scientist in a ancient temple lost in the ice...

Don't get me wrong, I love that kind of stuff, but not when they're pretending to be big budget ot event or anything...
    Just a good old B-Z-Movie...
With monster, people trapped with it, and no script...

It's edited like the very first trailers for Alien were (they're on the Quadrilogy DVD set), just with the annoying electronic noises replaced with Predator growls. And I surprised that no fanboys have complained yet about how far the Alien's jaw opens(it makes them look like dinosaur's from Jurassic Park, and it's totally ruined the whole movie for me now. I'm never going to see it, ever. It's obviously an abomination to the Alien and Predator franchises and all the people involved should be shot. Why do they have to disrespect the mythology... did I miss any of them?)

And low and behold, harry is cautiously optimistic... who'd a thunk it? Well he fuckin well should be. He's done so many fuckin backflips and bullshit stories lately he cant afford anymore fuckups ( constantine, batman begins promo work, T3 anyone?) After all the good press AvsP has been getting by people who have actually visited the Set, and That totally bogus "silver aliens, midget predators going CGI" slander campaign rumour harry posted here, that was completely debunked at Chud and various PROPER movie news sites, harry has had to pull his fat fingers out of his fat ass and give this movie some benefit of the doubt, to maintain some form of credibility. Well I have to say: good on harry for swallowing all that fuckin pride and getting over that massive ego to say that this movie might actually be good. good on ya harry! Now If you can acutally admit you've read and reviewed a FAKE AvsP script on this site just to take a pot shot at anderson... all will be well..

    Resident Evil with Aliens?

    by the outlander

I'm a bit concerned that this is just going to have the same storyline as Resident Evil. In the trailer you see a number of entrances closing. So I am assuming that the humans will get trapped inside the pyramid with the aliens and get nocked off one by one. Which is far to close to Resident Evil where the humans are trapped in the complex with the zombies. This at least looks like an Alien movie unlike Alien 3 and 4.

This looks like it was put together for the fans to tide them over until the full trailer hits next month (a recent set report mentioned a second theatrical trailer in April), similar to the Comic-Con footage of X2 that appeared online in the summer of '02. The little footage that was shown looks very cool and it appears that Paul Anderson has put a lot of work into making this look incredible. I loved that shot of the scientist shining his flashlight at the egg so that we see the silhouette of a moving Facehugger inside. Very cool.

Watch it again, and pay attention this time. It's a trailer relying more on suggestion and subtle creepiness than in your face shots of big set-pieces (that I wouldn't want spoiling anyway), but there is cool stuff in there. I watched it a couple of times, then frame by framed it (god bless QuickTime!), and there are some corkers, the best being the Alien leaning over the Predator near the end, animatronics have really come far, haven't they?

'No "big guns", nor big effects, just a few scientist in a ancient temple lost in the ice' ----- Alien Resurrection had big guns, and big efects, and an exciting trailer full of both. Alien was a low budget, tense, claustrophobic film with 'just a few crew members in a grungy ship deep in space', where more was suggested than actually shown. I know which film I'd rather see, but you're welcome to you own opinion of course.

    STOP BULLYING PAUL ANDERSON!

    by paulakoski

He does his best. I read an interview in fangoria a while ago that he wasnt that happy with all his movies himself either and that the studio keeps fucking him over. Especially with that soldier movie where he practically was a gun for hire and the studio controlled all his creative desisions. And resident evil and event horizons where the studio forced him to reedit the film.

In resident evil the rights to the film was going out, so he had to work really fast and with little money rewriting one of his older screenplays. Paul atleast got the chance to make a better ending to Res "undead".

So please be a little nicer to the dude. Hes trying the best he can, and it looks like hes in a more controllable position than hes been before with AvP.

The trailer looks good, much more athmosperich than his previous movies. Hes turning 40 now i dont think that his interest in techno musik and fast cutting is as relevant as before. I think hes giving alot of himself to this movie.

The idea of releasing an internet trailer whiffs of sucking up to the fanboys to me... "let's keep the geeks happy by drip-feeding them the few cool shots we have. The we get a fairly good opening weekend till word of mouth spreads amongst the real people..."
I cant say I'm a fan of Paul blah, blah at all but this trailer is aimed purely at the flamers above (and probably below soon) Show them a 2 second shot of a dribbling alien and they're yours....apparently.

    Come one, Guys !
You can't redo Rydley Scott's Alien ! You can't Surprise the audience the same way ! Everybody Knows whats an Alien and a Predator look like ! You can't make it work like it were the very first time !
If they spend an hour before show a blink of a creature in the shadow, well, in the original movie, thay was creepy, there, we will feel spoiled !
And, on the other hand, I'm one of the only complete Paul Anderson Fan, since "Shopping"...I only find Resident Evil a little dissopointing...Why ?
Because, let's face it, What is Paul Anderson good at ? An horror movie, see "Event Horizon"...He is good at visual, and I find in rythm, too...(You could disagree with me on that, everybody's taste...)
Resident Evil was disopointing 'cause we feel we miss the gore, the blood, and the violence...I'm not saying that gore is the only way to terror, I'm saying that, for them, in their heart, it seems to be...
And they try to stop themself, to be politicly correct...To please everyone and to don't chock...

    by man who rafts

Bless the hard of thinking... for they are resident here.

Doc Mcoy, just to explain the Descartian complexity of the tagline 'Whoever wins, we lose" to you:
The movie is called "Alien Vs Predator", right? You got that? Good. Now what they're saying is that whoever out of the Aliens and the Predators wins, we (humans) lose.

Now, that wasn't too hard, now was it.
Or perhaps it F***ing well was. God save us all from morons.

    It will be massive suckage

    by atari

  • But it's still got to be better to try at a bit of 'ambience, suspense and suggestion' that just churn out another mediocre action film like Alien Resurection. Personally, the trailers are working very well for me, building anticipation quite well by only offering teasing glimpses (a little more with each one) to help build anticipation, and not spoiling the action or story too much, and I only hope this reflects the nature of the film, as well. It's always more effective when the filmmaker manages to curb the urge to show too much too soon, it's much more effective to leave a lot to the imagination, even if the audience does have a good idea what is just off-screen because they've seen the previous films. We already knew what the Alien looked like when we saw Aliens, but James Cameron still knew how to rack up the tension even though the Aliens were rarely on screen (the motion sensors worked well at that). Think about it, he convincingly made us believe there were more than a hundred Aliens, a terrifying horde of nightmare creatures just outside the compound where our characters were, even though there were only SIX Alien costumes made, and only ONE shot where you saw them all at once!

    Reply to Talkback

  • Oh well, ATARI must know what he's talking about (I've heard his opinions are well-respected in most circles), so I guess I'll just have to resign myself to the fact that "It will be massive suckage". Thanks for the warning ATARI, I guess I'm lucky I didn't just ignore you and form my own opinion, there's no way I could have thought it through as well as you obviously have. :)

    by r h s c

This trailer looks like the same ol, same ol to me. Paul Water Sports Anderson is a shitty director, and this preview promises to be another subpar effort. I felt this preview was weak, and did nothing to inspire confidence in this project. Also, there was no dialogue, and it looked to be cut mostly from one sequence which probably occurs late in the film. Face it, this is going to be lame. I own the Alien box-sets, and saw the theatrical re-release last fall. This is definitely going to be one I wait for in the bargain theatres, if not on DVD. Too bad.

  • No dialogue? Great, leads to a nice, atmospheric and creepy trailer. Unless, that is, there's no dialogue in the film at all, that wouldn't be so good..... As for "cut mostly from one sequence which probably occurs late in the film", whuh? Most of it was surely from quite EARLY in the film, judging from the creepy "Oh my God what's going on here?"-ness of the shots. Doubtless most of the Alien and Predator action (wisely used sparingly in the trailer) is of course from later in the film; it wouldn't do for the film to shoot it's load too early. As for all being from one sequence, ??? No idea where you're coming from with that. I don't see how you can write it off when we've seen so little of it and heard so little about it so far (although at least you justified your position *slightly* better than ATARI, but not much).

U can't compare it to Aliens nor any others...

    by darkcowboy

First, believe that I do want to be convinced that this film could be great, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna see it anyway, 'cause I'm a true Paul Anderson Fan, so I excepect there'll be something to be saved...(Feeling alone on this...)I love Aliens, but You can't compare the way you did, 'cause even if they didn't have the budget of the CGI to make army of aliens (that would have been a bad thing, anyway, we agree on that....), the point in James Cameron's Aliens were first "no more what is this, I didn't expected that, I don't even have a gun", that would seem stupid, and that were stupid in Jurassic Park 2 & 3...The second point in James Cameron's Aliens, after the heavely armed space marines, (that we would have dreamed to see back there, the only ones that could survive more than a few seconds in front of such creatures) , there were the strong character, Ripley, and more than anyother Newt, we care about them...When they're no more the fascination of the unknown that's coming, the point is to care about the characters, to be scared for them, no to wanting them to be slaughtered just to see the monster in action !
They may tried to give us a fake-Ripley, wich I'm not sure is a good idea, but no other characters that we could truly cares about, everyone but the heroine and Lance Henricksen chararacter are unknown to make the "you never know who's gonna die next" trick....
Problem with that trick, is when the audience said "Who cares ?"

I love the complete absence of human voices, screams, or anything. Shit, they didn't even do the Blair-Witch-heavy-breathing thing. Loved the Predator's breathing in the background though- wicked SFX. Doesn't this just PROVE, however, that having humans in this movie is a complete waste? Before we saw 'Aliens', we didn't know or care about any of the characters in it except Ripley. Through the course of the film, we got to know the characters, and then we DID care about whether they died or not (one reason why the beginning of 'Alien 3' always annoyed me so much, when the deaths of Newt, Hicks and Bishop more or less made 'Aliens' pointless). The only question is whether AvP is gonna take the time to let us get to know (and care about) the characters before they start dieing, and this little trailer doesn't answer that one either way, so we'll just have to wait.

In fact, why bother with the victims in slasher flicks either, they only annoy! And cop films don't really need criminals, we can just watch the two mismatched partners learn to trust each other. In fact, why do we bother having any people in any films at all, why don't we just film cool looking sets with big explosions happening on them. -------- Joking aside, it's not that bad an idea, but not for a full length film, maybe something shorter.

    Comments, Criticism, and the Trailer

    by ivan_mtl

My first reaction upon viewing the internet-exclusive trailer was that it was obviously slapped together pretty quickly to satiate the fans with whatever little footage was available at the time. Still, I must say that I do like what I see - from a visual standpoint, anyway. Paul W.S. Anderson has definitely created an interesting atmospheric mood, and I think I can even spot a few hommages to the previous Alien films in the series (the bodies on the slabs are arranged in a circle much like the opening scene from Alien... the flashlight shining through the egg and revealing a facehugger's movement inside... an alien leering over the predator is reminiscent of Alien 3's trailer, as is the heiroglyphic of the alien on the wall which made me think of that film's poster). My only concern is that some of Mr. Anderson's films are sorely lacking in exposition (dialogue) and characterization, and I hope this isn't the case here. I mean, this isn't a video game or comic book we are dealing with here (uh... on second thought, strike that). Unlike a few other posters, I think that any sequel, or prequel (whether direct or indirect) should not automatically assume that everyone is familiar with the material. In fact, I think the opposite approach works best. This will be the first Alien or Predator film for many (in theatres, anyway), so I think they should not be left to feel like they are missing something. Oh, and the few of you that claim you will not be going to see this... you're all liars (you probably haven't masturbated either, right?).

    by carbon unit

The music from the Predator films is so distinctive, it should be Alan Silvestri composing the score (although a James Horner/Alan Silvestri collaboration would be ideal). Unfortunately, it looks like Mr. Anderson is going to use Marco Beltrami, the same guy who couldn't even do justice to Brad Fiedel's themes in T3.

...I know it's a minor detail, but "xenomorph" is not a term exclusively for use with the aliens of the tetralogy. The word refers to any kind of non-terrestrial organism. Gorman said in Aliens: "All we know is that a xenomorph may be involved." At that point, only Ripley and some higher-ups in Weyland-Yutani know about the creatures, which is why the marines use the general term "xenomorph." A Predator is as much of a xenomorph as an Alien is.

    In fact...

... I think the Aliens actually have a latin name - at least according to Dark Horse Comics. No doubt I'm remembering the name wrong, but I seem to recall it being along the lines of "linguafoeda acheronsis" or some such. Alas, my comics are in transit at the moment and I am unable to look it up properly.
