The Sandman Runs Again! Bryan Singer Officially Declares LOGAN'S RUN Remake Sanctuary!

Published at:  Mar 05, 2004 7:01:06 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... In 1976, a year before everything changed with STAR WARS, the biggie sci-fi action adventure was here on Earth. It had Robots, aphrodesiac gas, domed cities, Sandmen, cool as hell blasters that flared out the sides in a starburst pattern. And on your 30th Birthday you had to RENEW. For geeks brought up on Michael Anderson's telling of LOGAN'S RUN, we remember Jenny Agutter's nude body swimming, then exclaiming with joy that her crystal was CLEAR. We remember the crazed robot "Box" and his job as the spider to catch any loose flies lest they escape. We remember Logan 5 and Jessica 6 standing at the base of an ivy covered Lincoln Memorial pondering if that was the look of what it was to be... old. Yup, LOGAN'S RUN is one helluva geek movie.

Before that though, it was an even better novel called LOGAN'S RUN by William F Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The book had a life expectancy for its characters of 21, there was no carrousel and the world was described as looking completely different.

Not only that, but there were sequels in the land of pulp... LOGAN'S WORLD and LOGAN'S SEARCH.

Bryan Singer has decided to remake this sci-fi seventies classic, but he's starting with the book as his launching pad, which is good. The issues in the book with youth obsession and the trivialities that youth preoccupies one's self with when faced with death... well, it's a universal theme. What high school kid ever thinks he or she will live to 30?

There's no knowing if Bryan will use any of the cinematic inventions from the York version, but Bryan has already put a great deal of time into this project in terms of design and with cracking the script with Ethan Gross and Paul Todisco (and if that isn't the name of a guy to adapt late seventies material, I don't know who is!)

Meanwhile, if you have to know more about the world of LOGAN'S RUN, check out this FAQ or if you just have to check out old mpegs of teasers for the episodes of the LOGAN'S RUN Tv Series... ahem, which I just *happen* to know where are, click here! That ought to Logan you out, till Bryan gets this film together! With Joel Silver producing, I'm sure it will be quite a lush film with all the technical whiz and bangs to make us go gaga. Though, I wonder who Bryan'll get to play Logan! And there's tons of cool shit on Ebay for you Logan freaks including full costumes, belts, guns, crystals... and even a cup! Wow, wonders never cease!

Here's what Bryan had to say to The Hollywood Reporter about it:

"It's going to be about two best friends who ultimately take different paths because of ideology, circumstances and a woman who comes between them," said Singer, who added that in his version, he may set the age of euthanasia somewhere from 21-30.

The original movie left an impression on the young Singer. "My father took me to see the film, and at the time, it was dazzling and evocative," he said. "It was also the first time I had seen onscreen nudity. I remember being stunned."

I hope they keep the palm crystals, though that had to cut down on masturbation!

it's a good fucking time to be a geek, baby...

    by tommy5tone

'LOTR' wins 11 oscars. 'batman begins' has one of the best casts of recent years, and it's being directed by a guy who aims high and knows his shit. 'harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban' is getting some very positive advance reviews. 'troy' and 'the day after tomorrow' both have kickass new trailers. that recent interview with goyer about 'blade 3' got the blood pumping. and aronofsky's 'the fountain' might be back from the dead. but singer directing 'logan's run' - that's some fucking cool news. casting suggestions as follows: ryan gosling, nick stahl, orlando bloom, aaron stanford, ashton kutcher (c'mon, cast him as a psycho! could be interesting!), jessica alba, amelia warner, henry cavill, ben foster, keira knightley, scarlett johansson, mischa barton.

    this film's new look

    by superpaddy

So this remake will be based principally on the book, and will depart from the look and feel of the original film? Great plan, inspired presumably by Tim Burton's acclaimed interpretation of Planet of the Apes. Singer still hasn't delivered on the promise shown by the Usual Suspects - the X-Men showed me nothing but a journeymand director with some good actors and ashit load of money - so let's not all start jerkin' off with excitement. I haven't seen this one since I was a kid, but isn't it all caught up in 1970's fear of nuclear holocaust etc. Now that all of the nukes are disarmed and gone, our generation no longer fears such catastrophe, and so could not relate to such an envisaged future dystopia.

    by kingofthefools

First off I love the original Logan's Run. I just bought the DVD actually. ($9.99...Gotta love a bargin price) I was also a avid watcher of the TV series. (Well as much of an avid watcher a 8 year old could be at the time.) I'm actually looking forward to Bryan Singer's remake. The Usual Suspects, X-Men, X2, Apt Pupil...hell yeah, I have total faith in him. But didn't I read (or hear maybe...could have been on ET or Access Hollywood), that Matt Damon had signed on to play Logan? Hell I might have even read it here. It just might be a dark horse, sleeper, geek present. And if not....there's always X3. Thank you for your time.

I think that author David Gerrold one said that LOGAN'S RUN was one of the dumbest sci-fi novels ever written. I believe it was in a column he used to write for STARLOG. One of the authors took issue with him & wrote a letter to the editor. I read the book years ago...it was okay. The movie is horrible.

    by blok narpin

...X2 was a stupid title. X2. God, how dumd. It was such a good movie, but that title!! Thank God they added the subtitle X-Men United. That was a much better title. And even THAT wasn't a great title, but it was vastly better then X2! Why not call the third one "Uncanny X-Men"? That would be a title that would make the fanboys downright giddy. Just like when the Spider Man sequel was going to be called "Amazing Spider-Man". "Amazing Spider-Man" would have been so much cooler then "Spider-Man 2".

    Why this will work

    by ralphus

Singer is a good director. They'll cast it with young Hollywood talent that will bring in the teeny bops. The theme holds up because of parallels in our current culture: inter-generational conflict between aging Boomers and Gens X and Y, the simultaneous demonization and deification of youth, fear that bio-terroisim or rouge nukes will mean the end of our current way of life, not to mention the creeping fascism of our government (Support Howard Stern). If done right this could be a cool flick with a subtle or not so subtle subversive undertone. Or it could just be another shitty re-make.

    by blok narpin

...then I sure wish there were more no talent hacks like him working today. Seriously, this is Tim Burton -- one of the most visionary and inovative directors of our time. Sure Apes and Sleepy Hollow were sub-par (though niether one sucked!), but everything else he did was great. Especially Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and Ed Wood. I always said they were his 3 best films, but after seeing Big Fish Make that FOUR best.

I remember that article ( which gives you a clue as to how old I am! ) Nolan wrote back and "reviewed" Gerrold's book "The Man Who Folded Himself." Harshly. The difference? Nolan READ Gerrold's book, while Gerrold admitted he did not read "Logan's Run" but passed judgement on it anyway ( a proto-talkbacker :D ) because he thought "the premise was stupid." Later on, Gerrold wrote a red-faced mea culpa ( Kinda like McWeeney did on that Hulk thingie ). It was sweet.

  • "It's going to be about two best friends who ultimately take different paths because of ideology, circumstances and a woman who comes between them". Oh oh! That sounds more like the film than the book. Please Bryan, stick with the book (it has something called a plot) The film is OK (anything with Jenny Agutter naked has got to rate at least "OK") but has plot holes the size of Australia. How, with all the cool technology around (teleportation, holograms, maze cars) has the secret of fuses become lost? And the dopey underground sanctuary "organization". Has nobody ever wondered WHERE the people they supposedly "save" actually GO? If you've never read the Logan's Run book (or even A Book) it is VASTLY different from the movie. No post-apocalyptic setting, no domed city, no carousel, no Old Man (the oldest man in the world is only 42) and no T.S. Elliott cat poetry. What the book does have is a kick-ass, highly dangerous Francis, an Artic penal colony called Hell, a Box who is half-human (and an S&M freak), a Logan who chooses to seek sanctuary (rather than being forced to by a dopey computer), and who wants to destroy it in order to become a world hero. Done properly, Logan's Run could be a huge hit (if only there were some way to incorporate some naked Jenny Agutter again, damn!)

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes should have been awesome but was only OK. The Battlestar Galactica remake sucked donkey balls in pickles. Will Singer's Logan's Run break the pattern? Hmm, his plans for the Galactica continuation sounded fantastic, so maybe this could be good...

Isn't there supposed to be a Special Edition DVD on the way (or already out)? It just made me fall in love with Jenny Agutter all over again. So the most important question about this remake is not whether it will lean more toward the book or the movie, or even who will play Logan...Nope, the most important thing is who will replace Jenny??? I'll go ahead and throw Kate Beckinsale out there. Of course, a big part of the casting will depend on what age the termination date is in the script. Hopefully it's 30, instead of 21, so we don't get Teenybopper actors.

  • I loved the movie so much as a kid I found all of the books in the series and read them incessantly. (and the comics adaptation of the movie, too!) The books were much more edgy, violent and erotic than the film. Truly great pulp sci-fi! The big differences? (that I can remember) When you're retired, you don't go to carrousel, but are placed into some type of sleep/disposal drawers, which are found all over the world. The whole world still exists in the novels, there is no dead and abandoned past society/culture ala Washington D.C. as in the film. Sanctuary is real, it's an abandoned space colony on the moon, as I recall, and runners take a rocketship to reach it! And the biggest difference:

    (MAJOR SPOILER!)

Ballard, the old man in the film version, is really Logan's sandman buddy, Francis in an old man disguise. Who better to guide runners to sanctuary than a sandman working against the system while still inside it. After I read the books I always wanted a new film version made that more closely resembled what I read; hopefully, Singer will do just that...

Both versions have their plusses and minuses

    by st.buggering

I think making the cutoff 30 was a good choice, since it was evocative of the late 60's/early 70's culture from which the catch phrase "never trust anyone over 30" emerged. Yes, I'm old. Secondly, the ending, in which it turns out that there is, in fact, no sanctuary after all, is more satisfying to me. Maybe because I was a bitter kid. The book's world, however, was much more detailed and rich. Also, the Sandmen kicked holy ass in the book. The Grammaton Clerics in "Equilibrium" actually reminded me a lot of the way Sandmen are described in the book. And I didn't get to see it in the theater, by the way. I saw it on network TV. I didn't even know there was nudity until I was an adult, and rented the videotape. That was quite a shock. And by the way, I think the time is right for a remake. With Hollywood endlessly courting the youth demographic, obsession with youth seems like a great theme for today.

...and even owned that "Farrah Fawcett-Majors as Holly" t-shirt. Although it holds a special place in my heart, the film really is terrible. The most infuriating part of the whole film is Peter Ustinov. I usually enjoy him in just about anything, but his performance in Logan's Run is excrutiatingly self-indulgent and attention-grabbing for the sake of selfish thespian whimsy. Absolute shit. I Wish Singer Luck

    by barron38

*****This sounds like a great project for him. I loved the Logan's Run movie as a kid (Jenny Agutter: hot; palm crystals, Sandmen, and killer robots: cool). I never read the books, though.*****Anyway, I love the X-Men movies, but I think that Singer needs to make something other than an X-Men movie right now. He is a really cool filmmaker who has done an excellent job pleasing fans of the X-Men (I am a major X-Fan, having grown up with the Claremont and Byrne/Austin comics; I wanted to be Wolverine when I was 13). He is an SF/Fantasy fan, and has made cool movies other than the X-Men films (Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil). Its good for fans AND good for Singer that he takes a break from X-Men and makes other cool movies; otherwise, Singer might get "typecast" as only a superhero director, which would be a shame. I think, given Singer's track record and interests, that Bryan might turn out to be a very major genre film director. I hope he has a long and diverse career.*****Anyhow, Logan's Run is a great project for him (and fans), and I am sure that Singer will return immediately to X-Men 3 once he is done with Logan's Run. I think it is in our interest that Singer diversifies and mixes up other films with his work as the Maestro of the X-Films. So, good luck to him. Barron out.

The state of the movie industry today...

    by cranialleak

My feeling is that due to this new age of auto-information, we, the movie fans, have become too critical and have become overexposed to upcoming movies before we even see them. I have personally lost the excitement in movies that I once had. Could it be because today's movies are crappier than those in the past? Yes and no. I've been more selective of what I see because I get a chance to see more than I'd want to on the internet -- reviews, trailers, clips, interviews, etc. It has come to the point where, if I'm excited about a movie, I am given the opportunity to get as much detail as possible before even setting foot in the theater. For a movie that I thought would be bad, this exposure can get me to NOT see it, and save me ten bucks. FOr movies that I am excited to see, it also has a negative effect. I've seen the promotional 'good scenes', and it loses overall excitement for me, dampening the impact of those scenes, when put into the context of the film (because I've already seen this scene!). There are many factors involved in my lack of interest in movies today, and I will never have that excitement again because I am a sucker for information. Yes, I do get out, but who can't spend 5 minutes reading an article now and again? Take this article, for example: Logan's Run! I am interested. I want to see the trailer. I hope that it is a good movie and does well. Do I care that Bryan Singer is the director? Somewhat, it means that it may be in good hands. But I have a feeling that between now and the release date, I will have seen everything that would make the movie "fresh" and "original" to me personally, either through reading articles, or seeing promo pics, or watching the trailers online repeatedly. Not to mention, media exposure. I told myself that I didn't want to see anything about the LOTR series or the Star Wars series until the movies came out -- wishful thinking, my friend. If it ain't on the headline news of the internet, it's on TV ads for entertainment news shows, it's on local news channels, it's on national news. I can't avoid it! The movie-going "experience" is practically dead to me. I've lost touch. This is not a crack at anybody here in this forum, or the movie industry, or providers of information like Harry. This is merely my own observations. So where does it go from here, people? What can be done about this? I only say this for the benefit of you and me! Cheers.

    Why remake perfection?

    by sexybeast

Logan's Run isn't a good movie in the same way RotK or Godfather is a good movie, but its perfect for what it is. There is not one aspect of logan's run i think could be done better. Everything just works perfectly, and its a great Sat afternoon movie.

  • Also, in the remainder bin of your local bookstore, look for THE ALBUM COVER ART OF SOUNDTRACKS by Frank Jastfelder & Stepfan Kassel. For $5, it's got all these great old Saul Bass and Jack Davis (MAD) illustrations. It's the size of a vinyl record album (like those Roger Dean books of album covers). Also, there's a series of books called FILM POSTERS OF THE 70's, 80's, 90's, etc. that you can probably find cheap. And another website to check out is www.artofjamesbond.com for those cool Robert McGinnis/Frank McCarthy 007 posters (like the one where bond is walking on the side of Blofeld's volcano lair--it's so ridiculous that it's great).

  • none of this three-hours padded LOTR stuff. Just balls to the walls in the action, but lots of brief character sketches that actually evolved over the course of the movie (Iceman, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, the bad guy - whatever his name was). The reason it gets so much praise is cuz it managed to cram a hell of alot of movie into that. Defintely got your money's worth on that one. Great little gem of a sequel.

    Matrix rips-off Logan's Run

    by some dude

Seriously. Logan's Run presented a sci-fi reworking of Plato's Allegory of the Cave before the Wachowski clowns were out of preschool. "Oh, the Matrix. It's so smart. You have to be a genius to like it. You just don't understand philosophy."

PG movies with orgies and boobies...

    by some dude

The ratings system sucks today. You can't make a PG movie like Logan's Run anymore. You can't even make a decent R movie without the MPAA cutting all the goodies. Unless you want to make a homoerotic S&M movie and your name is Mel Gibson.

    Could be Visually Spectacular

    by ktak

Reading this Talkback it's easy to identify those who have read the book and those who have only seen the movie. Readers of the book know that, if done right, the remake could show us some amazing action set-pieces. The story literally takes place around the world. The fight at the huge (completed) Crazy Horse monument, the undersea aqua-farming facility (which was combined with the Box sequence in the 1976 film) are just two examples. I remember reading an interview with some of the original moviemakers where they explained that the reason for having the domed city in the first place was because the scale of the book was just too big to attempt at the time. With the FX technology we have now, all of these "money" shots can be done properly. I've been waiting for a "faithful" remake of Logan's Run since I read the book in high school. I hope Singer does it justice.

    Being a kid

    by radio1_mike

I was 9 at the time Logan's Run came out. I did not see the movie until I was 12 or 13. I loved the movie. It was simple and perfect for what it was. I also watched the show, you know when Heather Menzies was still a POA. I really would like to see a remake of it, it can't be as bad the 'new' Planet of the Apes was... I do hope the age limit is over 25, so we can see some more somewhat mature actors in the movie. And how 'bout Tara Reid as Holly?

  • Logan's run needed a unbelievably hot piece of ass like Jenny Agutter just to bring it up to mediocre. I agree that Katie Holmes is hot, too. She also has one of the most amazing racks to be shown in a major motion picture in the last five years. God bless Sam Raimi!

  • It only would have been better if Hawk was played by Hulk Hogan, so he could say "Brother, you will die by my hand, brother!"
