French Trailers for ONG BAK hit! If you love Martial Arts Cinema - Hate Wire-Work - You Must See!

Published at:  Mar 04, 2004 8:47:04 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... ONG BAK MUAY THAI WARRIOR is the nuclear bomb of cool that the martial arts film needed to get grounded yet again in the art of just pure unadulterated ass-kicking, holy shit, how the hell did they do that - film making! This is a no wire film. This man does the things you see him do in this film. He exhibits a dexterity that perhaps only Jackie Chan exhibited at the height of his body's elasticity and prowess. He exhibits a lethal quickness and freshness and charisma that I have not seen since Bruce Lee. This guy is the real deal. The reviews from last year's Toronto Film Festival announced it, then when I saw it, I flipped the hell out. Luc Besson has bought the worldwide rights to the film, and this April it hits in France. God and Fox willing, it will hit the United States later this year. These trailers are cool, but only hint at the sheer exhiliration that this film creates in audiences. Going under the title, ONG BAK - this film will own everyone that sees it. Amazing martial arts film that many claim is the best since or even before DRUNKEN MASTER 2! I shit you not.

For any fans of ass kicking this movie is the next coming, enough of never ending flips and running on walls, wires were cool-when they first came out, and its even worse when wire work is done badly, as is more common than not.

the film sucks. It reminded me of 'Blood sport'. Only with a shittier scenario.Havin said that, i'll admit that Ong bak showcases some of the most impressive fight scenes in film history! I've never seen anything like it. No Bruce Lee,jet Lee or jckie chang can top what the lead actor of this film is capable of doing.

boo-yeah. This is like my favorite fighting-action film of all-time: Bloodsport, come to life with a really talented action star. This guy is gonna be huge!! "Hey, yo, earth to Frankie, this is ground control. You better stop doing that. You might wanna have kids one of these days."

    Great action, soso story

    by harosa

Yes, the fight scenes are the best thing in the movie but if you watch the specials on the DVD, this movie was basically done as a highlight reel for the Thai action market so they can show off what they can do. Let's be honest, the majority of action/fighting movies are not remembered for their storylines. And the fighting is all real, there's a bunch of Making Ofs showing you them do the stunts over and over.

What a guy will do for a little head.

    by triflic

Should be the tagline for this film (hehe...stole this from someones comment at the Toronto Film Festival. This movie is worth the effort of the 'simple, slightly overlong story' for the great action sequences. I have a great bootleg, however, without the good english subs (the ones on the DVD are the worst ever...making me pray for the days of "All your base are belong to us") the movie feels overlong and less enjoyable. This demands to be seen on the big screen (seeing with 1000 screaming action/horrok/cult cinemaphreaks does hurt either) with good subtitles. Don't get the bootlegs, it will tarnish your 'first' experience of the film and believe me you will want to check it out again. He is hoping that this young guy makes as many movies as Chan or Kasugi or Chiba.

    by toby___wong

Ong Bak might be cool. I am gonna check it out for sure . However, Drive is the ultimate martial arts movie. I have yet to see a movie that can rival the fighting scenes in Drive. And as for wire-fu. When is it gonna die ? When Hong Kong did it it was cool. When Hollywood did it it was not.

You have to see it to believe it. I've seen it a least 10 times and, even as a big Bruce Lee fan, he's the new guy around and could beat the Shit outta Jet li. Drive is also one of my fave's (along with Drunken Master 2 and Fist of Legend).
Ong Bak is really up there as far as fight scenes go. Story's kinda' bland but if you're SE Asian...it's kinda not.
I ordered the VCD a few months back and honestly don't know where it's at anymore. Too many people wanted to borrow or burn a copy. The star of the movie is amazing with what he's able to do sans wires. Hard to believe only maybe at first, but amazed after realization.

    Slightly flawed, but very cool.

    by fudgewrangler

As mentioned before the replays are lame and take away some of the coolness from the film. It really works against the movie because it removes incentive to see the entire film more than once thus generating a lesser boxoffice.
It is also pretty lengthy and could use some trimming to avoid pacing problems.
But I still gladly recommend it. That kid kicks some serious ass!

Movies with wire-fu are still martial arts movies! Funny how everybody now says that wire-fu sucks! It just prove you don't know a lot about these movies!
I love both good martial art movies, wire-fu or no wire-fu doesn't matter, as long as the movie is good!
I'm just tired of wire-fu in AMERICAN movies, not in Chinese movies, that's all!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, this isn't the original, it's just another fuckin' "international version" (thank you, Mr. Luc Besson, pitiful writer and director!)!

    T'wasn't that great.

    by crimsonrage

One of the biggest problems with the film is the completely lackluster sound effects. Sound is one of the most vital aspects of action cinema, and this film has some of the lamest 'thuds' you'll ever hear. It ruins much of the action. And yes, many of the stunts are mind blowing, but the director's tendency to show us the same thing 5 times in slow motion really bogs down the excitement. Also, the choreography is nowhere near as complex or exciting as 'Drunken Master 2' or 'Duel to the Death' or 'Fist of Legend' or 'Eastern Condors' or just about anything from the golden boys of Hong Kong cinema (Chan, Hung, Biao). Don't get your hopes up boys.

and it was incredible. this guy does techniques i've never ever seen before. not only these bizarre spinning elbow strikes but kicks that defy the imagination. the stunts are incredible and like the guy before me said, all the punches/kicks DO seem to be actually connecting. the best part is when he is thrown into a "bloodsport" type fight and virtually finishes two of the fights with one kick. he uses these weird kicks you don't see in traditional karate: one is a front kick, but it has to be seen to be believed: he brings his knee up to neck level then heaves it forward. the effect is devastating. the flying knee strikes are out of control. he has these weird punching combos too where his elbows don't bend (!). i especially liked his fight with the jap, TOSHIRO. out of this world.

Who says "no wire-work?" I saw at least four wire-work moments. If you believe that the guy was nimbly able to leap and walk on peoples' heads on his own, then I know where Bush can find WMDs in Iraq.

It's refreshing to see, but as a martial arts movie... it's nothing new. Better than Bruce Lee? Better than Jackie Chan? Any of you believe that, then I know you're only exposure to martial arts movies have been the Americanized versions of their movies. Jackie doing a fight with a guy with both standing on their knees is awesome!

    Reply to Talkback

  • Ong Bak is great because the action is quite different. The Thai style of fighting makes use of plenty of knee and elbow action. And it looks painful too! Hey,we're used to the Steven Seagal,Jackie Chan,Jet Li style of ass-kicking.Van Damme? His moves are mandatory. You know he's going to split, jump around and kick and scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
If you loved American Beauty, don't watch this. It's just a movie with plenty of unique action sequences. In fact, insert Jackie Chan in it instead of the Thai action guy and you'll say : "Hey, I saw this in the 80s!"

BRUCE LEE, JACKIE CHAN... THIS GUY IS NOT!!! FUCK YOU GUYS...

    by eternal76

Usually I don't say shit... But NO ONE is comparable to Bruce Lee... Not yet... The man was a true martial artist, not just an actor. He lived his life by that code, with honor. We are fortunate of the fact that we got to see him portray his art on the screen, with the passion and love that he had for his craft. This is a pretty movie, but this is just a movie. Bruce Lee dedicated his life to martial arts, it was his life. I find it a great injustice for anyone to try to compare what he did to those who try to do what he has done. American martial art films have sucked in recent years. Asian cinema still has the market as far as I'm concerned on martial arts films. I don't bad mouth wire work, Jackie and Jet Li both have utilized it incredibly well. The over use of it in American films have taken it to a rediculous level, but it still has its place. But Jackie is incredible, Jet Li is incredible, Bruce is God... This movie just looks nice. But it is not comparable to these greats. Oh and one more thing, there hasn't been a great fight scene since Drunken Master 2, besides anything that Chan has done.

    by cranialleak

Not that I have, mind you. That would just be silly. I'd never do that. Really. Oh, and bought this Ong-Bak movie when the last wave of reviews came in several months ago. Was it fresh? Yes. Was it original? Not really. Was it annoying at times? Yes. The moves were, in fact, amazing! But they didn't need to replay it over and over again. That's where the beauty of the "rewind" button comes into play on dvd's and VCR's. That's what made me thoroughly enjoy the old HK films, when I'd say, "What the eff was THAT? ". They were spectacular moves, but I want to be in control and in awe of these moves on my own number of viewings, not force-fed the replays. As for the story, I didn't catch much because the version I bought didn't have English subtitles. And you non-English speakers know how stupid we can be. We don't mean to be, it's just our arrogance gets in the way.

NO wirework during Muay Thai sequences ...

    by emacs72

i saw this film at the Toronto International Film Festival last year (Sept. 4 - 13, 2003) and spoke with the director Prachya Pinkaew. the /only/ instance of wirework was to suspend one of the tuk-tuks (a three-wheeled motor vehicle common in Thailand) in a chase sequence.

those you claim wirework was used for Panom Yeerum (Tony Ja)never met nor spoke with anyone associated with the film.

    by unclesam

The director was lying to to you and everyone who believes it. If not wire-work, then some other contraption. Just like Jacque Arnaud told everyone Jane March really did have sex with her co-star in The Lover. It's bull to promote a movie. I guess we're all suppose to believe Thais are superhumans. If the director didn't make that claim, then his movie is no different from a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie because that's what it looks like. Like I said before... this boards smells of hacks!

Panom Yeerum shown his own trick in front of people during the movie premier in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong such as running over the group of people, jumping, etc. as you have seen in the movie.
Many people have witness his ability and they were crazy about his stunt in front of the theater.
He done it by himself, If you doubt about it, you can check the making of Ong Bak at this website:
