Real News About A SIMPSONS Movie Finally'!

Published at:  Feb 10, 2004 7:28:51 AM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

There have been rumors about this film forever. We ran a story back in February of 2000, but that was hardly the first time we’d heard the mumblings about a possible leap to the bigscreen for the characters.

Now, check this out. I got this e-mail from "fabfunk," along with a heads-up from the News Staff over at DVDFanatic.com, where the news originally ran:

Found this interview with Mike Reiss in which a potential SIMPSONS movie is discussed...

Tom: What can you tell us about the movie? We've heard that there was supposed to be a "Simpsons" movie for the past several years but you don't want to just simply put three episodes together, so how are you creating something new that's not been done before?

Mike: That's been the biggest challenge. They've wanted to do this since season two. It's been 13 years of wanting to do "The Simpsons" Movie. Finally FOX said, "Let's just do it!" We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but FOX said, "Maybe if we start paying you, you'll get inspired." And sure enough it worked! We've got a very good and interesting idea and it's different from the show. You know, it's like the "South Park" movie where it's just a bigger, longer, amplified version of the show. I can't tell you anything specific about it. My wife doesn't even know the secret.

Tom: When do you think "The Simpsons" movie will come out?

Mike: I will say two years from this summer. I think it's going to be Summer 2006 or maybe Christmas 2006. It's a reality after being just sort of this phantom idea. I think it is really gonna happen.

-fabfunk

Man, I hope that’s true. These are some of the most durable characters in American pop culture, and if they’ve got the right idea, a SIMPSONS movie could be something special. Let’s hope they turn the form on its ear as much as SOUTH PARK did. We could only be so lucky.

"Moriarty" out.

They could go old-school; it would be great! Homer would be a bad father instead of just the idiot we love. Bart could spout catch phrases circa his "Eat my shorts" days. Lisa would cry a lot, Marge would mumble. They could even do a 'Bart Simpson vs. the Space Mutants" thing like they did with Nintendo all those years ago. It all worked so well. I love the Simpsons, but this sounds like a bad idea. I fear it. Out.

    FAMILY GUY...

    by fidelio17

I don't know how else to say this... FAMILY GUY IS A MISERABLE DICK-CHOKING KNOCK-OFF! Anyone who is anyone who is not of bionic origin can see that! I will hear no more FAMILY GUYS ROCKS nonsense because, let me tell you, I tried watching that show and the only thought that crossed my mind (besides "This is a miserable dick-choking knock-off") was that it was simply un-funny. Why do you think it was cancelled from FOX? Because no one was watching it! SIMPSON's was good because for all of its Homer idiocy, it was always more subtle. It's like people of our generation just want to be rapped over the head with blatancy. Shit! I hate in the show when they go off into one of the father's fantasy-tangents and the lame joke (which is usually a parody of some movie, etc) is just carried on and on and on, and you're like "Jesus!! How long are they going to carry out this one fucking joke!" Bad writing. Shit! You'll never see a FAMILY GUY movie, cause the only people who would see it are some scattered geeks on this site here...and, pardon my saying so, faithful nerds, but that does not an audience make.

    THE SIMPSONS IS SHIT

    by sepulchrave

And I WAS one of its greatest fans. The show is a pile of shit now, face it. We've had nearly four years of the most ridiculous. risible, 'here's a terget for ya' Presidents of all time and this so-called 'satire' has yet to make one single joke. Rupert Murdoch's whores, and a few weak prods at FOX and Murdoch cannot save the show from accusations of weakness, slipping into The Simpson's Go To(insert country here)territory and handing out corporate ('ironic')cameos to the likes of N'Sync and Tony Blair. And The Simpsons IS a satire, it's job is to ridicule society, power, privilege, fame, celebrity, religion, family life and the status quo. That's what satire's for.

    idea for the movie

    by porco_rossi

what do you guys think of this idea for a simpson's movie?: have you ever seen "my neighbors the yamadas"? it is sort of the anime equivalent to the simpsons. anyway the movie is kinda a bunch of short skits that are loosely tied together by an overall story arc. imagine the original tracey ullman shorts of the show, really hilarious and so true, but all tied together by a loose story that gets resolved in the end. the story is only there for the resolution, the focus is on damn funny skits - observations of life in suburbia. for example in yamadas, there is a funny bit with the husband and wife fighting over the tv remote. y'know, but keep the characters the same as they are and make it american of course. the idea is that everything has been done and outdone on the tv show, they can't possibly make the movie bigger, so why not go back to how it all started and aim small, but ingeniously funny. like the life in hell strips. think it's possible?

    How to do satire

    by mbaker

The irony of "The Simpsons" unable to do satire anymore is evident in the "Family Guy" episode, "Viewer Mail #1" where they viciously tear apart N*SYNC. Presenting them as the girly-man phonies they really are. Yet on "The Simpsons, the actually have these no talent losers on as "special guests". That's what satire is all about. Rediculing the opposition, not becoming it.

... sorry to tell you this, but they ARE making a Family Guy movie. Its been *confirmed*. A simple search on Google will prove that to you. It'll be a straight to DVD thing though, apparently, because the high sales of the season DVDs are whaat merited its commissioning. And, to further add salt into your wounds, if the movie sells well, the series will almost certainly be back on the air. And it'll be funnier than the Simpsons, because whereas you complain about a 20 second long fantasy sequence joke in Family Guy being 'too long', its nothing compared with the Simpsons, where they drag out a LAME joke for the whole episode and produce a grin or chuckle AT BEST. YAAAAAAAAAY for Family Guy! (And goddamn the AICN servers are slow this morning so if this is a double post please for give me).

and even I think that The Simpsons are pretty much through. The jokes on the show are still pretty good, but the story quality has sucked for about the last four years. This movie probably shouldn't be done because there is no possible way it will please fans. None.

    by focusonthechart

...Sorry to tell you this, but it's the other way around. McFarlane is in talks with Fox over doing another season of Family Guy in addition to his American Dad pilot, which probably won't leave time for a straight to DVD movie.

"If the show does return, it will likely put off a planned "Family Guy" movie, says MacFarlane. To do an original movie directly for DVD and the series at the same time would be a little difficult," he says."

    That's a month ago from
    http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/15460.htm

"In addition to beginning production on "Family Guy," he is in the middle of casting for a new cartoon series pilot for Fox titled "American Dad." [He] could also be working on a new feature film and DVD project for "Family Guy" in the near future. "A 'Family Guy' movie for the big screen is something that is coming up at Fox in the feature department and my guess is that it will happen at some point," MacFarlane said."

    That's recently from
    http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/archives/2004/02/05/arts/9500.shtml

So, before you start throwing salt into the wounds of Simpsons' fans, remember that a simple search on google will prove otherwise. But hey, that means new season is a go! Yeah!

Downhill Slide for the Simpsons. A movie would hopefully be the

    by jethrobodine

The Simpsons used to be clever, subtle, and entertaining. Now it's trite and bawdy in your face toilet humor only panders to the lowest common denominator. Die hard fans defend it, but South Park caught the Simpsons sleeping on the job a few years back and the show hasn't been the same since. It's complete and total lack of respect for the characters and the viewers has turned more than a few fans away in recent years. My advice to Team Groening; Clean up your act.

    by shad0wfax

However I am puzzled by the repeated use of "subtlety" in regards to The Simpsons. In fact, there isn't a single comedy that I can think of from America that could ever be termed as subtle (although my memory oculd be failing me). The Simpsons has always been about catchphrases, silly slapstick and dumbass jokes - and it did it superbly; no one can touch it on that. There were touches of satire but to call them subtle is almost parody. Still, The Simpsons has had its heyday and although the "subtle" satire may be absent from the show, along with the good storytelling (mostly), there is still the occasional episode that shines. It is definitely true that a movie will either be a swan song or a final nail. I'm hoping swan song. Oh, and Family Guy is pretty damn funny but it's crude and a lot of the jokes are hit/miss overseas due to highly Americanised content.

    by womb2doom

Family Guy rocks harder then anything the Simpsons could hope to limp toward in it's past 5 Years. Fuck it; 10 years. Anyone who disses Family Guy as being unfunny is a quivering pathetic humerlous little brat. People like that are the reason Family Guy was cancelled, coz the MORONS on this planet out number idea hungry couch potatoes 10-1. I challange any 'comedy fan' to read this Family guy quote (where Lois tells Peter she wants to buy a car from the newspaper)and not piss your pants laughing; Peter: "Whoa, Lois, A friend of mine once bought a car from the newspaper. Ten years later, BAM! ... Herpes." Those of you not laughing, pick up your ragged carcus and dump it in a coffin.

    by osmosis jones

Face it...The Simpsons, as a creative entity, died years ago, and has been coasting on the goodwill of fans still hopelessly pining away for a return to the show's Golden Age (92/98). Give the show *another* two or three years, and even *that* won't be able to sustain it's top-20 ratings, and hopefully Groening will stop rolling around on that big pile of money (with many beautiful ladies) and put a bullet in this rotting corpse. Futurama died far too young, but the current run of The Simpsons is in mortal danger of jeopardizing the series' place in television history as one of the great comedies of all time.
