TheOneManGang checks out coolness on DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and HELLBOY!!!

Published at:  Feb 09, 2004 10:34:42 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with the latest from this weekend's LA Comic Convention - which had special guests galore with info to feast upon. In addition, expect the new HELLBOY trailer attached to DAWN OF THE DEAD when it gets released! Here ya go...

Harry/Moriarty

I attended day one of a two day comic con in LA being held at the Pasadena
Civic Center. I'm pretty sure you've been E-mailed about this already, but I
thought I weigh-in as well.

Day one had a pretty good line up; I won't get into too much but I will say
that the "Dawn of the Dead" and "HellBoy" panels were quit a treat. We were
also shown trailers that left you very much interested in these particular
movies. So here's a lil taste:

Trailers:

The about 30 minutes of trailers which included a 10 min. featurette
of "Van Helsing," which I believe is the one available online. Very cool and
entertaining; makes me want to see this movie. Besides that, the trailers
that seemed quit interesting were: "The Ladykillers" with Tom Hanks (very
funny), "The Village" MNS's next flick (very atmospheric), "Walt Disney's Home On
The Range" (has the old school style of animation and humor of Disney's
"Aladdin" & "Little Mermaid" days), Pixar's "The Incredibles" (nuff said), and
finally "The Polar Express" with Tom Hanks (looks cool, but I didn't know it was an
animated movie).

Dawn of the Dead Segment

The MC comes out and announces that prior to the panel, we will be
treated to an exclusive 10 minute scene, and that parents with kids in the audience
may want to remove their children because we would be seeing some zombie
moments (which really got the crowd going). Don't know if you guys have seen it so
I'll keep the moments you'd consider spoilers out of this description.

We start out with an overhead shot of a beautiful neighborhood (the
inclosed type) and I guess our female lead (not familiar with her) driving home.
She stops to talk to her neighbor (a 12yr old girl) who shows her she's learned
to skate backwards. She pulls up to her driveway, goes inside and sees her
man watching TV (some kind of American idol bullshit), they end up in the
shower together at which point the regular television program is interrupted by an
emergency announcement. From the shower they end up in bed and next thing you
know it's 6:36 in the morning and their bedroom door slowly opens. We see
the silhouette of a small girl. They both wake up to see her there and
boyfriend gets up to see what's wrong with her. She opens her arms, he goes to her to
pick her up and we see that her face is covered with blood and her whole left
side of her lips have been ripped off (or bitten off). She lunges forward and
literally goes for the jugular. Girlfriend jumps on her as she rips a chunk
of neck off. She tosses her into the hallway and we see the scene in the
trailer where she pops up to her feet and charges the bedroom. Girlfriend slams
the door on her, runs to boyfriend and puts pressure to his wound, which is
gushing lots of blood. As he dies and lil girl is slamming on the door,
girlfriend tries to call 911 but all lines are busy. At this point, boyfriend stands,
looks around and rushes our leading lady. She manages to escape through the
bathroom window and we get a disturbing shot of the chaos that is consuming
her once quite neighborhood. The camera pans to show some homes on fire,
neighbors confused and in fear, cars driving recklessly and some burning, and people
(or zombies) running in and out of homes. At this point she makes it to her
car when she is accosted by a neighbor with a gun. She's trying to calm him
down when something cool, but terrible, happens. As she gets in her car and
speeds away, her man runs after her. He's caught up to her when his attention
is now set on a family that's just walk out of their home. He runs and jumps
on the fresh meat and next we're with our heroine as she's driving out of her
neighborhood. We see more chaos, more destruction then we get a helicopter
view of the city and I kid you not, it reminded me of the sky shots of LA during
the riots (quit cool yet very terrifying). During this shot you get that end
of the world feeling, especially when you see the craziness of the reckless
traffic. After this is an additional two minutes that end with her crashing.

Now I know about the anger over the title, but if you disregard that
you'll agree with Harry in that this will probably be a good zombie movie. The
crowd sure gave its approval at the end of the teaser. As for the panel, the
director, producer, three of the lead actors and the crowd pleaser, Ken Foree,
were present. Typical stuff was said most notably Ken Foree saying that his
cameo in the film is as a televangelist (so if you've read the script, I guess
you know his role), and the whole panels admiration for G. A. Romero and his
original trilogy and their hope that if their movie is successful, it will
prompt a studio to finance Romero's fourth installment.

HellBoy Segment

I'll make this one short and sweet. Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, and
Guillermo del Toro kicked ass. They answered every question thoroughly and with
great enthusiasm, especially del Toro. The man is a funny motherfucker. They
showed us a trailer that will soon be released exclusively on the Best Buy Coming
Soon dvd they release once a month at their stores. A cool scene in this
trailer that I've never seen before is HellBoy ripping his own horns off. They
also showed a 12 min. featurette that showed us among other things, baby
HellBoy, killer action scenes (HellBoy kicking ass, HellBoy getting his ass kicked),
and some Rick Baker monster models. Thing of note, when asked what future
projects he has in mind he mention that he was in cahoots with James Cameron on
a project based on "The Coffin" comic book and was interested in making it in
3-D, also mentioned a comic book property he has been wanting to obtain for quit
sometime. I'm just sorry I can't name it because although Guillermo spoke
loud and clear, at this point we in the back were getting some loud feedback.
This is also why I can't name his dream project. All I can say is that it is
based on a HP Lovecraft story. AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

Well, that's it except to say that the one and only David Carridine was also
there, but he was just their to sign autographs and that was the only time you
could get to him and I didn't get that chance. Other than that it was a
great Convention.

Other notable news: It was mentioned that at the April edition of the LA
Sci-Fi Comic Con which will be held at the Shrine Auditorium on the 25th the
guest of honor will be the one & only great Ray Harryhausen. He'll be present for
a book signing. Maybe the LA crowd will get to see you guys there.

As a die hard Romero fan (and zombie movies in genereral) I am looking forward to this remake more than I did the LOTR trilogy.

You whiners and "purists" are gonna miss out on good times if you snub this one.

Or it could suck, but I don't think it will.

Has anybody else seen "Comic Book: the Movie" yet? If you haven't, please take my advice and STAY AWAY - it is one of the most boring, unfunny, amateurish pieces of crap I have ever seen. Moriarty's positive review was no doubt influenced by his meeting with Hamill, whether it was conscious or not.

Ok. Last time I was told to see a horror movie I ended up watching 28 days later. Call me a purist but i'll stick to the originals dead movies. What the world needs now is Love...craft to show us the true meaning of horror. NOT MONSTERS! But the fallibility of faith and the insignificance of human endeavour when cast against the eternal cosmos. I need to be scared again and, frankly, I've watched The Ring too much. Go Guillermo!!

    The thing about Romero's zombies....

    by boris the blade

...was their inconsistency in speed. Sometimes they would lurch along, then all of a sudden they'd speed up like someone jammed a cherrybomb up their darkstar. If the remake can be consistent in that the newly zombied are fast and the more decrepit ones are slower, I'll buy that.

Reading Harrys script review of "Dawn" remake

    by brian bialy

He said he would prefer the title "Hell is full". WTF Harry? Nobody BUT Romero purists are even gonna know what that MEANS. Should they have renamed the Psycho Remake "Don't check in"? Or the Thing remake as "Warmest Place to hide"?

I hope this movie will have the feel of both a kick ass zombie flick and epic disaster film.

We need this. 28 days later was a pretty good time, but I want this to play out like the original script of Day of the Dead: Bigger scale, good characterization and interaction.

If it HADN'T been named Dawn of the Dead, you would be complaining of it being a "Rip off"!

Check out Brian Keene's first full length novel: The Rising. Absolutely kick-ass zombie story, although you may not like the ending. This would make for a killer flick and I believe something is in the works along those lines. Gore up the ass and nobody, but nobody is safe in this one.

It could definitely work as a movie, but I keep hearing that line from 'Blade II,' slightly modified (which Goyer probably wrote, but): "You thought you controlled the apartments. But now there's someone new on the streets. Someone worse than you" [.....shudder]. Ah, but it's good stuff. I recommend reading the whole thing if you can, and you're right, it lends itself to a cool movie.

why do the zombies haul ass like they're looting in L.A.?

    by theprophecy

Gotta say that this trailer definatly caught my attention. Especially when the little girl comes through the door, I was like "ahh dude!" I don't know about the rest of you, but spooky kids never fail to freak me the fuck out! I liked what I saw though. When she props up from the floor, I would've of kicked the shit outta her. I'm talkin' New England Patriots field goal! I hope this movie does kick ass cause 28 days later had so much potential but didn't deliver. Resident Evil was a let down as well. All they had to do was literally use Resident Evil:2 (the game) as the source and it could have been the best modern horror movie to date, yet not to anyone's surprise, they were still able to fuck that up as well. I just hope the zombies look believable running as fast as fuckin' Barry Allen. I always felt it was scary as shit when a horde of zombies just over power you in number rather than being able to out run a living, breathing, healthy human being. I never heard of zombies developing superhuman speed as a side-effect of being DEAD! All in all, it looks like it just might have what it takes to be the heir apparent to it's predessor, the original "Dawn of the Dead". Then again,"Resident Evil: Apocolypse" just might own the zombie horror genre. This is getting interesting...but with my luck, they'll both suck big, hairy, sweaty, musky, brown and bitter KING KONG BALLS!!!

    Verus and Scariest Movie

    by dukedemondo

The most recent shit-myself bout of bladder-quivering brought on by a movie would be the original TV movie of Ju-on. The theatrical one scared me a bit too, but nothing like the creepy fucking sadisticly scary TV original. On, Versus, it was fun for a while, and some of the characters were reasonably entertaining. But overall, it was just too long. So we must ponder, then, on the thinking behind the directors decision to take his cast out into the woods again to shoot a further ten minutes of scenes to be cut into the original. It's like a drunk guest at a party who can do cool tricks with his fork. After the eleventh time, you just wanna tell him to stick the fork up his ass and get the fuck off your property.

  • it was an OK zombie flick (just barely). But as a movie as a whole, it was terrible.
yes technically it looked like 10 million dollar movie even tho it was made with about 1 million but that doesnt make it a good movie.
the premise itself is pretty original but if it was actually done properly then it would have come across as a good story and movie too. The main problem are the characters. THEY ARE FUCKING ANNOYING AND I COULDNT FUCKIN WAIT TILL EACH OF THEM GOT SLAUGHTERED. with repetitive, retarded dialogue and just plain annoying stereotyping (that hill billy dude was the worst .. what a fuckin piss poor accent)
House of the dead was a superior movie to this. Seriously Im not joking.. house of the dead had prolly the same amount of zombie goodness, a more cohesive story for this sort of zombie flick(yes I shit u not, undead's premise is good, the way its directed and cut together IS NOT.. it feels like a spastic was cutting stuff with the avid)
and the characters (no matter how bad their dialogue in HOTD was) werent half as annoying as Undead's characters.
Zombie fans should check this movie out and then watch HOTD back to back, u'll see what I mean... www.suprnova.org
Undead doesnt touch Braindead (movie it tries to emulate), Romero trilogy or resident evil with a ten foot zombie blood drenched pole.
When it got released in its homeland (australia) it got panned by all the critics .. the only good thing everyone said about it was that it looked like an expensive movie.

If it's well-executed and atmospheric enough, I can see it becoming a cult hit. 'Nightmare Before Christmas' has done pretty well for itself, after all, and I don't think it's just because of its pedigree. I can see college kids wearing Hellboy or B.P.R.D. patches on their backpacks.
