Pics from Linklater's BEFORE SUNSET + News on A SCANNER DARKLY!

Published at:  Feb 05, 2004 9:23:27 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... well you lucky Germans seem to be getting BEFORE SUNSET first! So unfair. Heh, well... We're Austin, and the good money has it that perhaps this flick will get a big tadoo at the fabulous Paramount Theater pretty soon. I have faith. I believe! Can't wait to see if I fall in love with these two's passionate spillings again. Here ya go...

Hi Harry...I'm a huge fan of your site and I'm glad to be
contributing. Since I'm totally crazy about Linklater and
BEFORE SUNRISE (being that one of the top five movies of my
life)I got desperate when I read here there was a sequel
coming. Well, it seems that now it is official that it
is gonna be called BEFORE SUNSET (IF NOT NOW was like a beer
ad tagline) because it's goin' to be shown at the Berlin Film
Festival with that name. Since I haven't seen any photos of
the movie on this site, here are some. C ya around

Tadzio Visconti

And now we hear what may be coming next from Linklater. I've also heard that he's working on a college film, in the variety of film like DAZED & CONFUSED. But A SCANNER DARKLY would kick ass too!

Harry,

I saw Richard Linklater speak at UT yesterday and he let slip an interesting tidbit about his next film. As you know, his next film, Before Sunset is coming out relatively soon (SXSW perhaps?), and he mentioned some cool news about his next one.

He said he is going to use the animation techniques from Waking Life to do another film.  He has adapted Philip K. Dick’s novel “A Scanner Darkly” and he is looking to put it to film. A Philip K. Dick novel about drugs done in Waking Life form… could be pretty interesting.

Thought this would help.

    by junior frenger

I thought I saw a script somewhere floating around the net with Charlie Kaufmans name on it? Didn't he write a version? Hmmm...I wonder if Linklater has taken a look at it or if he started from scratch.

did Philip K. Dick write just so his novels and stories could be adapted into movies??? I actually read in one of my REALLY old Wizards that there was gonna be a sequel to TOTAL RECALL and it was gonna be called MINORITY REPORT...weirdest fucking thing.

    Someone Look at this Animation!!

    by rustmonkey

My company did an animation inspired by A Scanner Darkly that is a demo piece of ours.

Check out www.rustmonkey.com , go to the 'portfolio' section, and click on the quicktime.

Hope you folks enjoy -- let us know what you think!

I've seen your demo before... I think I followed a link from Being Charlie Kaufman a few months ago... I can't remember most of it, but the middle section (meeting the "brother") was brilliant. The reading of "I'm going to college" is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

    Waking Life animation

    by jwfreebird

Hey, if anyone is a big fan of the animation in "Waking Life" (I am), you should check out this new flick by Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Jorgen Leth called "The Five Obstructions." Excellent experiment in film that features animation by the same people. I just caught this movie at Sundance so I don't know when it will be around.

    A scanner Darkly

    by mr_ant

Just because Linklater did a drug movie, doesn't mean he's right to do every fucking drug movie. Rambling, incoherant sprawling narratives like Waking Life is exactly what a scanner darkly does NOT need. Or average quality animation like the Rustmonkey demo (no offense guys, it's not that its bad or anything, it's just not A Scanner Darkly) Kaufmans Scanner Darkly screenplay is superb - Why don't they just fucking shoot that? Live action, 35mm anamorphic, William Dafoe as Barris and Sam Rockwell as Arctor. Christ I'd rather see Chris Cunningham shoot it, if I'll never get to...

They should make the Kaufman version.

That script has been on the net for ages, and its excellent. I dont want some rubbishy non-kaufman version, just film his BETTER script.

Glad you dug the animation! The crew here are all PKDick freaks; Scanner and Man in the High Castle are big favorites (though Scanner is infinitley more adaptable, I think).

I liked the Kaufman script quite a lot, as well; did a nice job capturing the bleak irony of the book. Thanks for taking a look!

    PKD

    by footy

A "Scanner Darkly" will be only the 2nd full length PKD book book to get made. The other 2 that I think would make good transitions to movies are "Time Out Of Joint" and "Ubik"

I only just found out from this thread that Kaufman had written a script - how cool would that have been. Although it looks like it's not going to happen :(

"A Scanner Darkly" is one of my top 5 Dick books. Shold be interesting one way or the other.

Philip K Dick died around 1981, before any of his books or stories were made into movies (including Blade Runner, I think). Blade Runner was based on a novel, Total Recall, Screamers, and Minority Report on separate short stories.
I doubt the guy ever thought about making his stories into movies. Back when he was writing, people actually read books instead of just adapting them into screenplays.

I'd rather eat my own shit

    by drunken rage

than see another stinky version of a PKD novel/novella/short story. Regardless of R.Linklater's abilities (which, although I really enjoyed "Dazed and Confused") are minimal, the idea of him doing a version of "A Scanner Darkly" of all things, is ridiculous. #1, it's unfilmable, #2, WTF? Who would finance such a disaster? And, equally, despite the merits of RL's previous, stupid, animated thing, where's the audience for this movie? And yes, PKD fans, I'm with you-- "Man in the High Tower" could be interesting, cinematically, as would the one about the class differences in the apt building.

I was just joking cause it seems like there has been so many of them. Although I would have to admit I've never read his stuff, I'm sure the source material outshines most of the films...
    electric sheep rule...wait....that sounded bad.

before sunset the ending in waking life...

    by 81666

well i guess you will know the ending of before sunset in "waking life" there's a scene of these two actors in it, and they get specific about a sequence that happens within before sunset.. though delphy's accent flip flops between french and american between both movies.

another hopelessly overrated filmmaker. SLACKER and WAKING LIFE are nifty, but DAZED AND CONFUSED has to be one of the most boring "comedies" I've ever seen. I still want to read Richard LaGravenese's script of SCANNER...
