VAN HELSING featurette thingee with more stuff snarling and leaping about!
Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know, I think VAN HELSING is gonna be a whole helluvalot of fun. The sets and design look lavish and detailed. Hugh looks absolutely cool. Kate looks scrumdiddliumptious. All the CG... well, it is what it is. It certainly looks better those ol Doug McClure monsters in the ol Samuel Z. Arkoff flicks of yesteryear. There's something kinda funky cool about Sommers' new brand of kitchen sink horror adventure. It's fun. Do I wish it was less spazzy looking and more atmospheric and tonally dark and icky? Absolutely. Do I wish it wasn't up to the umpteenth level and more threatening and deadly? Sure. But it isn't that... I'll get that from HELLBOY and from foreign horror. From Sommers, it's going to be "to the max" and well... I certainly and you should certainly understand what you'll be getting into this May when you see this. Watch the featurette - it's more extensive than anything else we've seen. If it looks fun, enjoy, if not - gripe about the CG, that's a grand pasttime.

That's what Van Helsing is. And that's how I'm gonna treat it. A cool script idea and a fun movie. For this one I vote we don't gice a shit about canon and even let the cgi slide a bit. Anyone who's childhood is getting raped died before we were born.

I STILL hold that any film that features Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, a Mummy, and Werewolves that does NOT star Abbot & Costello is a very bad, bad idea.

This film gets an automatic letter upgrade and peaks my interest.

This film is gonna suck soooooooooo much. Gone are the glory days of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, the definative Dracula and Van Helsing. Instead we get a pumped up aussie with the worst accent since Sean Connery in Highlander and a poor man's Carrie Anne Moss with no screen presence to speak off let alone talent. Why the fuck does this look like a poor mans blade for the kids only with a much bigger budget. And why the holy fuck is van helsing using Wesley Snipes's cast off weapons. God I fucking hate Sommers for this but even worse are the thick soleless clueless cunts who come up with this popcorn shit. The cgi is gonna be right down there with godzilla and the mummy returns. Dracula looks shit....lots of pointy teeth???? Wolfman....he looks fucking cuddly, have these pricks never seen Dog Soldiers? Those beasts were made from the loose change in Sommers pockets but they still fuckin rocked! As for Frank....Those dickheads need a fucking history lesson. They could have made a franchise here but nooooo, stick all yer best monsters in one god almighty cgi shit fest and hope for a good opening weekend. Jackman is great, as wolverine but he's not a never will be seen as our generations van helsing. That honour goes to the great peter cushing, an intelligent regular guy who fought the bad guys not with shiny super futuristic weaponary but with that thing which hollywood lost along time ago...a brain!!!!!

I'm just sayin'...
-
. . . oh yeah and where can I get one of those evil-killing crossbows?
-
This could be the best action film in a long time...or it could be Underworld. Don't SCREW THIS UP!!! Dammit.
-
A great movie, and the similarities to Castlevania are pretty substantial. I would give anything for a badass live action Castlevania. I would be just as happy with Van Helsing as a replacement if it didnt look horrible. And im not just talking about the shitty CG. Im talking about a shitty TONE. Why can't they make a serious dark gothic vampire movie? It sucks to say it, but there hasnt been a good one since Interview with the Vampire (that I can think of off hand).
-
The entire game series is more than enough fodder for a decent storyline, as Dracula has hated the Belmont family for centuries...got your motive right there. I'm still waiting on my live action Metroid so I can see who fills out that curvy ass body armor of Samus Aran.
-
You saw that Metroid Prime commercial that Alex Proyas directed, right? That was fucking awesome. The live-action Samus suit looked pretty badass.
I've wanted a metroid movie since the NES days! -
You speak some truths there. It doesn't have the feel of an Arch Rival/Nemesis battle with two charismatic leads squaring off. More like a live action Vampire Hunter D.
-
...I'm probably one of the most forgiving movie-watchers on the planet, based on what other people say distracts them that doesn't bother me at all. But the effects on the Super Bowl trailer for this looked absolutely awful to me. Perhaps they'll be tuned a bit before the release.

While I do agree that Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing were the definitive Dracula and Van Helsing in the classic Hammer film series, I must say that I am eagerly looking forward to seeing this movie. The sets, costumes and monsters look terrific, Hugh Jackman is always great, and you can tell that the very talented director, Stephen Sommers, had a blast making this! I'm not asking myself, "Am I going to go see this movie?", but rather, "How MANY TIMES am I going to go see this?" Between this movie and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, the summer is looking good!

This film looks ace- the only thing that bothers me is the Wolf Man- it seems that in recent horror fliks Werewolves have been depicted as more Wolf Man than Man Wolf- with the face and legs and body of a wolf- Hell, the whole thing actually just looks like a giant wolf that stands up straight. Wouldnt it be great to go back to the Lon Chaney Man Wolf look where the Wolf looks more like a man- to me that looks more frightening- to be able to still see the Man in the Beast while hes in Wolf like form. Besides, it looks cooler too. Hopefully theyll stick to that idea for Werewolf By Night!!! ARWOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!
-
Movie might be good, but the trailer falls flat. "The Village" trailer, however, is a work of art.

That tells me where 5secondfuse is coming from. Kate Beckinsdale might not be the greatest actress who ever lived but she's no poor man's Carrie Anne Moss.

Nothing I've seen from Van Helsing looks terribly original. Comparisons to Castelvania and Vampire Hunter D aside (although they are valid, as it seems that the Van Helsing crew 'borrowed' liberally from both), the CGI looks God awful for a movie this big, and I'm so over kung fu weapons and bad ass posing after being bombarded by it for the last three to four years in every action movie that's come out. The only thing Van Helsing has going for it is some big name baddies and Hugh Jackman's rising star... which seems to sink a little bit every time he does something that isn't called X-Men. I'll check out the DVD this fall, but at least Harry gets his vampire/werewolf fix.

...sure, Schmeigal was good CGI and so was Jurassic Park, but I'd like all those who rag on the CGI in Van Helsing to name me five other movies with really good CGI. My point is most CGI can only do so much... it's still more realistic than the best stop-motion animation of the past (no insult to Harryhausen, whom I admire, but let's face facts) but it ain't the real thing. Therefore, the Wolf Man won't look "exactly" like a nine-foot werewolf might if it was real flesh and blood. By the way, I agree with the talkbacker who said he' like to see a return to the more human looking werewolves of the 40's and 50's. I commented on that a while ago too. They looked scarier... more demon-like. I really have no beef with the trailers except perhaps I feel that Dracula looks a little too Eurotrash for me. He looks more like he belongs on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" or something. I guess I can live with that though... I'm looking forward to checking this one out. By the way, is House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula available on DVD?

demi moore or catherine zeta jones... either way, she would be yummy in live action. nothing sexier than a hot evil chick with a foreign accent. oh oh, elizabeth hurley would be an excellent baroness....(fap fap fap fap fap).......

by tango fett
I hope this movie is good, and not just disposible entertainment like Sommer's previous THE MUMMY RETURNS. I have issues with the cg (like everyone else) and Dracula really bugs me with that teeth thing he does. The Wolf Man, though obviously cgi, is awesome. Frankenstein looks pretty screwed up, but I guess that is the point. While I'm here, I must ask: I am one of those few who love the Matrix franchise (all of it) and am wondering, am I the only one here who liked Revolutions? The orangutan (spelled right?) dosen't count, just because of his stupid explanation of it all. The American government=evil machines? Bin Laden is Neo? Let Mori run the site, and let Harry make his supposed movie. Here's hoping he screws it up the best way he can...any takers? This site is kind of going down the tubes anyway. Not much news here interests me anymore. I suggest www.comingsoon.net, it's a better more reliable site anyway. Hellboy looks awesome.

by smarkjobber
I mean, lookit at this dude. He's exactly how I pictured the director of "The Mummies." Like a no-edge-havin', gee-whizy, upper-class suburbanite. Not exactly the type I want creating horror (if anyone considers his tripe as 'horror'). Who even wants to see these monster in a goofy PG-13 setting? Waste waste waste waste waste.
-
No thanks. I suffered through "The Mummy". GREAT trailer got me into the theater, then jokey execution, flat characters and mindless action for mindless action's sake disappointed me. I was bored throughout, and this looks like more of the same. Big, noisy, summer shit. Now I like big summer popcorn movies (or I wouldn't be at this site), just not BAD ones. And Sommers is indeed a hack. (Hoo boy, seen DEEP RISING?? Man oh man, is it bad.) More excited for SKY CAPTAIN which looks like a geek's delight and SPIDEY 2. Will pass on VH and watch on DVD some year.
-
Hey, thanks, that *was* fun.
-
What's with the crossbow and blades and shit that he whips out? Is he a time travelling demon hunter? Sure, he can come up with some creative ways to destroy these things, but the expectation that we are to believe he made such smooth and shiny toys is a bit much. They should LOOK home-made, (wooden, rusty, dented and USED looking) like he's been living on the road, hunting these things for years, piecing together what he can scavenge in order to give him and edge. That's really my only gripe about what I've seen, since there are a million different versions of vampires and werewolves and such I don't really care as long as they can be identified as such.
-
Ah, fuck off already! 40 or 50 years from now, someone is gonna remake "The Breakfast Club" + "Die Hard." + yeah, I'll probably be on here (or somewhere else) bitching to anyone who will listen about "Gone are the glory days of..." + someone who actually UNDERSTANDS will have the good sense to tell me to shut the hell up. As I am having the good sense to tell you now. VH will be brill- another summer movie to look forward to. Out.
-
Van Helsing WILL turn you all into fuckmeat. Search your feelings, you knowww it to be true....
-
Y'know, Harry does not get any kkind of check from the studios to give great buzz about a movie. Otherwise he would have given Batman and Robin a good review. He even said that in his book, which you all should read instead of bitching about who should play Hugh Jackman's penis in the remake of Tromeo and Juliet, you illiterate fuckwits. The movie will be good for what it is. If you want something intelligent and sophisticated, wait until December and Oscar Season, otherwise, shut the fuck up, go to the fucking movies, and shut your fucking brains off and enjoy the fucking flick for the fun movie that it is. Besides, Van Helsing can't possibly be worse than Gigli.
-
I'm almost gonna pee my pants! Isn't that what you meant to say? Nothing like reviewing a movie without even seeing it. But that has never stopped the intrepid AICN "reporters" before.
-
I happened to like Deep Rising and The Mummy for what they were: action flicks with a bit of goofiness thrown in. They weren't great movies, but were fun movies, and for that I can appreciate them. The Mummy Returns felt too forced, however... they should have ended with the original. I have hopes for Van Helsing, and hopefully there won't be a Van Helsing 2 to spoil it later.
-
One of the initial draws of Van Helsing was the "reimagining" of classic Universal monsters. I thought that was true, until this featurette of course. I thought the whole "werewolf sheds its human skin to transform" was an old belief. I thought it was dropped like the whole "vampires can walk about in daylight", and "Frankenstien's monster can move quickly" were dropped through movie history. What next? Talbot has joining eyebrows? I could have sworn that was done before, The Company of Wolves perhaps. I'm not annoyed that it has probably been done before, most movies take from others. I'm annoyed that they told us these were new legends for a new century. Oh, and by the way, on the issue of the Baroness, I nominate Monica Bellucci. Sure, its a little cliche by now to nominate her on this site but I just can't get enough of that cleavage! (Thinks about her all too short part in Matrix Revolutions) MMMMMMmmmmmm.

The movie is dogshit. It was dogshit when it was released and it will be dogshit until the end of time. Any attempts to make it seem like some kind of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (a legitimate cult masterpiece) will only reveal yourself to be a poser of the highest (or lowest, if Stephen Sommers in in the equation) calibre.

...looks like at any second his arms are going to extend and his fingerknives are going to staart screeching along the walls. ............ That last picture has a gun that looks like it came outta' LXG. I agree with Silverhour that the weaponry should look rustic, but servicable. ................ I hope this turns out to better than I expect, but either way I'll be there and try to enjoy the dumb fun of it. I was really hoping for a darker film, instead of an "exciting adventure romp". The only thing that will piss me completely off is if they refer to the monster as "Frankenstein" in the actual film. Years of correcting people down the drain! ............... Can't wait for the marketing genius who decides to combine the live-action Scooby Doo with Time-travelin' Van Helsing. ...."Ruh-Ro...Ran Relsing....Hee-hee-he-he-he".
-
Come on, lets face the facts here: Apart from the crappy cg and the ridiculous costumes (I've said it once and I'll say it again: Wolverine looks goddamn stupid with that hat!) and the cheap sets (everything more than ten steps away from the camera is a matte painting - a fucking over the top fantasy kitsch matte painting, by the way)and the utter uncoolness of the weaponry (it used to be kinda cool, but hell, nowadays everybody has stuff like that! Bet there is some kind of a bad ass superhero home ordering service...)a MOVIE THAT HAS 3 MAJOR MONSTER VILLIANS IN IT CAN'T BE ANY GOOD! Just have a look at the mummy. It was just one monster, and they ruined the storyline anyway. So how on earth are they gonna make up satsifying plotlines for all of these monster? I'll tell ya something: It just can't be done, not even if they had payed 20 million to the screenwriting dream team that is Boyens/Walsh/Jackson (though it could have been interesting to see how they had handled it) Oh, did I mention that none of these monsters looks anything like cool or even scary? It's defenitly the poorest Dracula I've seen in ages (I've avoided Dracula 2000, though).
So to sum this up: The movie looks like shit, the story will suck big time, so why the hell should anyone in his right mind pay any money to see it?
Did you see the shot of that vampire babe? That's why. -
PLEASE stop ragging on Bish

If anyone was lucky enough to watch the japanese anime called Vampire Hunter D, this film is right up in relation to plot.
Only thing that in the flick - D the protagonist was half vampire (a vampeire) like Blade (Wesley Snipes)
The anime was tight! -
This looks very cool.
-
money...there is only so much of it to go around. a movie like Van Helsing, you have to do the math...we know Jackman is gonna be fairly costly, being as hot as he is right now, we know the CGI, as shitty as it looks, is going to be very prominent, and that costs lotsa moolah, beckingsale makes a decent wage, it's probably over 2 hours, that adds up, superbowl spot, extensive ads, yada yada yada...big $$$!! so what gets throw by the wayside is ANY attempt (screenwriting, direction) at making this anything besides a run of the mill, and therefore shitty, monster kiddie action special effects bad one liner movie...even though I love beckingsale's cheekbones and frankenstein (seperately guys) I can't see how this will be anything but shitty...remember me when it comes out and you waste your CASH on it...
-
It seems like the producers read every criticism about the movie and then made a trailer to counter every argument. The only problem is that their discussion of each aspect of the movie is the same.
Hugh? Great!
Stunts? Great!
Effects? Great!
Story? Great!
If they babbled on about how one more aspect of this film was "great" or "epic" I was gonna puke. The original idea sounded good but the more I see of the execution the more I agree with the naysayers...and normally I don't like to do that. I truly believe that if you have to put out a trailer that has every person involved with the production of the film yammering about how "great" the film is it must, of necessity be a bomb. I'm staying home.
