27 Live Action Weta Workshop Produced Designs For EVANGELION -- Commence Drooling!
Hey folks, Harry here... Ok, which theater in Austin does this open at... I'm getting in line now. WOW.
Harry, I thought you might be interested in these twenty eight designs that Richard Taylor and crew have come up with in their work on the upcoming live-action Evangelion movie. They’re all screen grabs from an Evangelion DVD extra which interviews Taylor and Ben Wootten about their ideas for the upcoming feature.
I’ve very much liked Weta’s ability to convey weight and mass in their designs and in the finished product on the screen, so I’m very much excited. As for the apparent Anglicization of some character names, I’ll reserve judgement until I see the final product.

This looks amazing. Here's hoping a fraction of this makes it to the screen. It's very faithful to the source material so it looks like they got it right. Why they feel the need to make this into a live action film is another story all together.

OK, I thought most of the production sketches looked damn good. They seem to be going for huge sets most of the stuff on display seems very faithful to the anime. But what in the name of bloody fistfuck was up with those character sketches? Kate Rose? She looks like a 50 year old crack whore. I can see how they had to make the protagonists a little older than in the anime because it would've been tough to film this adaptation with 12 and 14 year olds. But do they really think the masses will flock to see wrinkled hags like "Kate Rose"?
Jan. 16, 2004, 6:57 a.m. CST
I smell another CGI bloated shitfest on the horizon.. GOD I hope im wrong, but I dont see these dickheads puting in the effort or talent to be making anything, sets OR mechs, that will represent the original Anime, which is essentially what all their sketches re-create, with a few changes here and there. Yes, Im afraid this will suck Donkey Balls, but will wait to see them fuck the fanboys in the ass before I start laughing "I TOLD you SO!!!"

And since I hear they're working closely with Gainax anyway (isn't somebody from the original staff writing the script, or at least the treatment?), I'm not surprised that the designs hew closely to the original Evangelion designs. Besides, half this stuff is probably to figure out how to do the damn designs in a medium that's different from 2-D cel animation! As for "Susan" and "Ray": the suits look good, but if anyone is expecting real women to look like the unusually tall and skinny character designs from the anime, you're going to be disappointed from the get-go.

This movie could be AMAZING... However, I COMPLETELY disagree with their decision/plans to change the characters names...I think that's just a HORRIBLE idea...utterly HORRIBLE... If we can have a movie and understand it where there are people with made up names, such as: Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Legolas, et al... I'm fairly CERTAIN that we can understand a movie that uses Japanese names...

Obviously there is way too much storyline, action, etc. from the Eva animated series to fit into one movie; even if they do make it two or three hours long. I think that for this movie to work GAINAX should approach it like a series of movies. This first movie would start with a little pre-history of the Second Impact and NERV. From there it could jump to where the anime series starts with Shinji's first day at NERV and the battle with Sachiel. After that we have the some filler with Toji and Kensuke, and Shinji practicing in Unit 01. Following that is the fight with Shamshel. They could end the movie here or continue on with Shinji wanting to leave NERV. I think that a really good place to end the film would be after Shinji says "I'm home." to Misato after deciding not to get on the train to leave Tokyo-3. I feel this is a good place to end for two reasons. First, if the movie does well they can just pick up from where they left off for the next movie. Second, if the movie doesn't do so well it would end in a spot that isn't quite a killer cliff-hanger for those that did watch it. This would piss some fans off because Asuka wouldn't be in the first movie, and they would have to rely on there being a second movie to see her. Now this is only what I would do with the movie and I am by no means a professional, but I think it does make some sense and would hopefully appease both Eva fans and new fans alike.

While ordinarily I would say "stick to the original" (or better yet "don't live-action stuff that only works as animation") I'm going to have to break policy with Evangelion. The whole original production was, in a nutshell, a mess. You could see them running out of money as they got near the end, with the last two eps forcing the movies/ovas to be made. The director certainly didn't lack passion, but frequently lacked coherence. He alternately pandered to (fan service) and belittled (the endings) his audience. And just because the show is trying to be philosophical doesn't mean it pulls it off. The "philosophy" in Eva was mostly just the usual japanese existentialism with a healthy dose of pseudo-religion and mother/father complex. To top it off I don't see how 12 angels could get crammed into one movie, or even 3. And of course when Hollywood gets involved you just know they're going to screw anything and everything with focus groups and placing style (or at least eyecandy) over substance. I suppose americanizing everything and making the main characters not jailbait was a foregone conclusion, but how do they intend to handle that whiny bitch Shinji (or whatever they want to call him)? Not to mention the blasphemous and oedipal overtones? And for sure, the chances of anyone Japanese, or even Asian, making it into this film in anything but a minor role is slim to none. My suspicion - this will be slightly better than the American Godzilla, but not by much, and it will be just as much of a mess.

Jan. 16, 2004, 3:48 p.m. CST
dammit Harry fix the friggin server already...fack! I'm a huge Eva monkey and I believe that they could pull this off. OBVIOUSLY with changes. Anyone see Wizard's anime insider casting? Some of it was pretty friggin good. Selma Blair as Misato, and that killer japanese schoolgirl from kill bill as Rei? SWEET. Having everyone be american except for Rei would heighten her mystery and enigmatic nature. Anyway, these images are good...sure, they are paintings of Evas taken straight from the series....BUT this is an incredibly FAR cry from a film actually being made. You need things like a script, director, producers, cast, production schedules...any word on the stuff that really needs to happen in order for it to get done?

Funny how things work out. Kate Rose is the costume designer for Asuka's suit. Here is her IMDB listing: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0741507/ It is also possible, but not proven that Ray could also be a person who worked on her design, art designer. Just thought I'd let you all know.

Not giving the characters their proper is just plain wrong. Thats like making Batman without Bruce Wayne or Superman with Clark Kent. Sure the characters may be there, but could you imagine Batmans secret identity being Roger Weatherby or Willam Haverbrook or some other nonsense? No! The last time I checked, WETA was a special effects company; so why are some of you freaking out over the names? A director hasn't even be assigned to this movie (that we know of) and I do believe he will make all the important decisions like if everybody's names will remain the same as in the anime or not. Someone even mentioned "Kate Rose" as one of the clothing designers or something, so there's your proof right there that these are just preliminary names. Also, I read on some site that the plan is not to squeeze all the episodes into a 2 hour movie but that it will only involve around the first half of the episodes (I don't know if this web site if legit or not, so take this as rumor). If this is true, that just screams sequel if it's successful.I think what everyone needs to be worrying about the most is who the director will be. My wish is James Cameron (I can dream, can't I?). I can't tell you how badly I want this movie to blow my pants off, but I just can't help but get the feeling it's gonna suck. Anyways, here's to hoping!

I love the Evangelion series more than anything to come out of Japan in the past 12 years. Aside from sexy anime characters and giant robots Evangelion is a great story build on a biblical script. Dealing with God, Adam, Eve, Apostles, and real in-depth Controversial Christian content. I seriously don't think any big Hollywood studio would invest in this movie unless is was severely gutted and rewritten for a more passive over protective American audience. Take Kevin Smith's Dogma, Miramax had to drop it due to protests, and death threats by Christian activists. They ended up giving it to Lions Gate for the theater release and Sony for DVD and video release. If Evangelion is made into a major film I sure the look of the film will be right but the whole back story and setting with be all new. Character name changes are the least of our worries, if you ask me.

I love Japan, and I used to like anime, but this is getting sad and stupid. At least when the Australian fad hit, it only lasted a couple years. This Japanese entertainment fad is getting sad, and the otaku are quickly earning the literal translation of their title. PLEASE give us some original animation or science fiction from someplace else in the world!!!
Jan. 16, 2004, 11:56 p.m. CST
Evangelion ranks in the top 2 greatest anime ever made. In its essence it is THE "Holy Bible" of anime against which all other animes pail in comparision. It not only has strong religious undertones, its uniquely organic "mecha" and angels are some of the most remarkable creations ever to be placed in anime. Evangelion is to Anime what The Lord Of The Rings is to Fantasy. If they screw this movie up then they will all burn in the pits of Tarturus.

Sure, it's a decent anime, but wouldn't work as a movie. Now, let me ask: do you people know the difference between a mech and a mecha? ........................................ Japanese series and cartoons usually have MECHAS - that is, human-shaped robots, that move and fight like humans. Sometimes they even use giant swords! Examples: EVANGELION, POWER RANGERS, GUNDAM. ........................................ But Americans design their robots differently. They do MECHS. They are not a hero's giant toys, but military weapons, like a tank. They don't look or move much human-like, if at all. You can see them on videogames like STEEL BATTALLION and the MECHWARRIOR series, or the BATTLETECH role-playing game. ........................................ My point? Otakus sure are going to hate me for saying this, but... MECHS ARE WAY COOLER THAN MECHAS! There, said it. Sure, Evangelion is kinda neat, but it's a really crazy story, too mystical... ........................................ I prefer MechWarrior's far more realistic plot: in a distant future, genetically engineered soldiers of opposing factions battle with mechs at various planets, and only when the war ends the victors will be given the right to return to Earth. ........................................ Think "STARSHIP TROOPERS with giant robots". I'd love to see such a movie!

I'm not surprised that WETA were fans of Evangelion. A bunch of computer nerds who do CGI, who would be? What surprises me is that they're actually pushing such an incredibly difficult project!!! This is the first case I can think of where a special effects studio is trying to find a director and not the other way around. I'm impressed. That means everyone on this project is there for the heart, which will make the end product all the better. For those of you not in the know, EVA is a deeply personal story about a young boy, Shinji, and his experience as a pilot for a mech that was built to save the world Angels. Angels and Humans are in a race to the next step of evolution and God will only choose one side. The angels are gigantic monsters and the only thing humans have are the Eva units. Shinji starts the series as a scared, shy, and troubled boy and we travel with him as he comes to grips with himself. That is the bare skeleton of the story. Wait till you find out Unit 01 is possessed by the ghost of Shinji's mother and the reason why the angels always attack NERV HQ. The EVA anime is a hallmark of anime. Do yourself a favor, anyone remotely interested and intrigued by these production sketches, and pick up DISC 6 of the EVA series. You'll be straight in the twilight of the anime, but this is the best that EVA has to offer. The part where UNIT 01 goes berserk has to be the pinnacle of robot anime, if not all anime. It's like what would have happened if Walt Disney had been a satanist. All the episodes on this disc are bone-chilling. There's no way they can make this into a franchise. The very nature of the source material dismisses that. It'd take ten years just to get half-way through the series if they go the Harry Potter route, and by then the actors playing the kids would be unmistakably adults. That's the best-case scenario. How the hell would you do a sequel if the first movie is about the first few episodes? The middle of the series has such a "monster of the week" feel to it that doesn't easily lend itself to a three act story structure. If I were the director, I'd do a FULL METAL JACKET/ CATCHER IN THE RYE approach and go through Shinji's breakdown. Fuck it, just show scenes of robot destruction and mental breakdown. That's the jyst of the series, anyway.
Steel Battalion was made by the japanese, Blake. Nice analogy there, son.
Jan. 17, 2004, 4:22 a.m. CST
And that Kate Rose being Asuka's fashion designer is pure bullshit. They don't assign one person to do one character's suit. Especially when they're all matching ensamble numbers. Just by looking at the pic you can see that it's a prelim concept design by Ben Wootten, a major designer for LOTR. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1399603/ He did the final design for Aragorn's kingly armor at the end of ROTK for example. You can see much of his work in the three LOTR Artbooks out there.
Jan. 17, 2004, 4:24 a.m. CST
WTF? They look the same as the anime, but the feet and the skull features are hideous. What the fuck are they doing when they open their mouths and have teeth? Bollocks. That ruins it! 01 looks like a damn dinosaur! Wondering just what the eva is is one of the cool parts about the anime. Here they just spill it out and spoil it!
Jan. 17, 2004, 4:25 a.m. CST
Steel Battalion was done by a Japanese developement team. And if you were familiar with more anime or manga, particularly a lot of Masamune Shirow stuff and its subsequent adaptations, you'd know that military "mecha" are very prevalent in the artform. One has only to read Ghost in the Shell and see how in depth the mechanical designs are to see that non-humanoid mechs are not unique to or superior in American creations. I'm not saying "OMFG U SUXXX ANMEE ROXXX!!!!1!!1oneone!1", I just thought it was odd that you would see it like you do.

Kate Rose ? wtf ? THIS WILL SUCK! and you know why? not because they've bastardized the main character's names. No. IT'LL SUCK BIG TIME because there's no way in hell that WETA (and whomever is in charge of this project) will adapt "the end of evangelion". It won't be as graphic , as emotional as the anime. Nor will it have fucked up dream sequences, no instrumentality , no intelligence nothing. It'll be a huge success for sure!. ( cause obviously the average crowd likes shit and is always satisfied with mediocrity). In the end I bet it'll be rated Pg-13 , and all the david lynchianesque sequences won't even be part of this new mega budgeted insult.
Jan. 17, 2004, 12:49 p.m. CST
I'm new to the whole Evangelion scene, so I don't know the story or the characters, but the designs look cool, although I find it rather curious that the robots have tongues. Anyhoo, I do hope that they don't just arbitrarily Anglicize (or in this case Auklandize) all the characters for Hollywood consumption, although being a white male ages 18-49 and hating my foreigners as I do, I might spontaneously combust upon seeing international or multi-ethnic (close enough... mwahahaha) stars in a blockbuster motion picture, so I guess I should thank them for allowing me to see this movie without having to deal with that.

If this film gets made, its gonna suck. The special effects will probably be sub-par. And how the hell are they gonna cram such a complex plot into a two hour movie. Not to mention all of the religious people that will be offended by it, so they'll probably tone it down. The thing that was so great about Evangelion was that it was a great ANIMATION, not a mediocre film.
Jan. 17, 2004, 5:59 p.m. CST
First off, let me just say that Evangelion KICKS ASS, especially End f Evangelion. This movie could easily be made into a trilogy, and I hope that they don't let fans down like the Warchowskis did with the Matrix sequels. And I hope that they get actors that fit the animated characters. Please don't let this movie suck!
Jan. 17, 2004, 6:44 p.m. CST
While I think the point of ADV releasing all of the preliminary production concept art is to build up buzz within the anime fandom niche to use as a card to play when they're trying to convince the suits in various studios to greenlight this, the fact is, as it stands, they don't have a studio attached to this thing, and they estimate the budget will go well over $100 million, which the studio suits may balk at for a franchise with an extremely limited fanbase in North America.
Jan. 17, 2004, 8:52 p.m. CST
Chris Cunningham would own on this. He can do anime type material (Squarepusher's "Come on My Selector"), his editing, lighting and cinematography are better than all feature film director's combined. The man is a genius and he would definitely be able to do the disturbing aspects of this very well. Cunningham is the greatest director of all time, and he hasn't even made a feature yet.

People read your posts, don't worry. Probably no one who has any control over the property of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion,' but people read nonetheless. It's certainly apparent that you care about the franchise and you want to see its translation (or adaptation) molded into a worthwhile filmgoing experience, and while I don't know anything about it besides for what's now available for consumption on these talkbacks, I feel the need for this to be good for all of you guys and gals who are into it. Here's hoping that whoever picks it up finds a creative team as passionate about the material as you all are. I imagine getting backing for a movie/movie series that would cost upwards of $200 million and require an elegant construction requires a lightning rod of some sort. Now what's the deal with Man-Hattan? *********************** *********************** P.S.: J_D, why don't you lay off 'Lord of the Rings?'
Jan. 18, 2004, 1:19 a.m. CST
Only if you're on crack. It's a "been there, done that" anime. Little boys piloting giant robots has BEEN DONE. MANY TIMES. IT IS BOORING. "Wings of Some hard to Spell Engrish" is better. "Akira" of course is better. "Anything by Hayao Miyazaki" is better. Even the original "Iczer" fliks are better. "Dirty Pair?" Better. "Nadia?" Better. And still, WTF is an "Evangelion?"
Jan. 18, 2004, 1:23 a.m. CST
A friend urged me to watch the entire "Evangelion" series on DVD about a year ago. And I did. The animation is top-notch by anime standards, though I still think "Ghost in the Shell" is the best. I'm not much of an anime freak, but I do appreciated hardcore battle sequences with hi-tech weapons. "Evangelion" definitely delivers in this department. Serious fucking carnage when the Evas fight the Angels. That said, I thought the plot could've been tightened and reconsidered in many places. I'm not talking about the complexity of it - I understood every plot twist as it was unveiled. I just felt the show needed some...how can I say this...updating? Some Western influence? Fewer sequences with penguins and wailing, overacting youngsters in their Eva suits? A little more hard-boiled, cold-killin' attitude would've served the show well, in my opinion. That said, I'm very glad WETA is pushing to make this film. They'll probably make the changes I was hoping to see when I first watched the series, so I'm very happy they're behind the production. Also, Gainax himself is writing the teleplay for this film, and he's setting it up to augment the already-existing story, not retell the series in two hours. This also makes me happy. Go WETA.

by Smeg For Brains
For one thing the term "mecha" is short for "mechanical", or in other words ANYTHING MECHANICAL (the japanese like shortening things this way, like anime is short for animation, and it doesn't just mean Japanese animation). A Japanese "mecha" designer designs everything from the giant robot to the coffee maker in the heros apartment. "Mecha" doesn't just mean "big humanoid robots". Mech on the other hand is a term created by FASA for the Battletech game, and has been taken by ignorant Americans and used in place of what they think the term "mecha" means. Your descriptions of the terms could not be more wrong, unless you had said that "mecha" meant Hello Kitty, and "mech" meant My Little Pony. Also, another sign of your ignorance, Starship Troopers HAD BIG ROBOTS. Oh but that was only in the BOOK that was written nearly 50 years ago and probably influenced most of the piloted robot/power armor sci fi around the world. There was even a Japanese animated version of Starship Troopers in the eighties. So basically take it from me, a 19 year anime fan, and life long sci fi fan, you really don't know what you are talking about.

But I beg to differ on the label "Big", since the 'bots' in the book were large bulky exo-suits that probably looked more like deep-diving metal 'suits' (ala jacques cousteau) carrying rocket packs and heavy ordnance. So far not the anime series, the movie, or the american cgi series all bearing the book's name have hit the right mark. Shame what a little 'artistic interpretation' can do to a great concept. But keeping on-topic, I hope they do this film right and keep the international profiles inline with the anime series.

WTF!!!! You know this film (IF made) would have western actors in it...."Hi my names shinji & im from the U.S of A!....Get real. On a Final note Evangelion is THE worst anime of all time. Many anime fans try soooooo hard to find subplots that they fail to realise Gainax & the team were making it all up as they went along. A peice of SHIT anime....there are MANY better shows out there! But hey each to your own!

There was never any chance of this having Japanese actors to play all the characters. So, why the hoopla about the names? Would you rather have some American chick walking up to the camera saying "Hi, I'm Me-saw-toe Cat-sue-raw-gee"? Or that they just change the names and can have a proper go at not making this fell like a dubbed live-action anime? And as for them never dealing with any of the "deep" things of Eva. At least the boys at Weta are huge fans of Evangelion, and will try and stay as faithful as possible. Don't know about ADV, though. And as for the eva's having teeth, I think you should watch NGE again, because they do.

Hey call me culturally illiterate if you will but what the hell is Evangelion because I got into this page just because Weta Workshop is brilliant. Those designs are really fucking incredible so why do I not know what they're from?

I swear I remember in the 80's some of the mech designs were taken from the battroid (but didn't transform) and Khyron's hind-legged mech.
Jan. 18, 2004, 12:27 p.m. CST
I saw this and did a Google search for Evangelion. After reading the plot synopsis on a few different sites, I still have no fucking clue what this is supposed to be about! Giant robots that are really alive with people's souls built into them, fighting alien robots that seem to have been the blueprint for our robots? And the 20-foot-tall robots can look like ordinary people in the later episodes? Wha...? It seems like even the plot synopsis was translated from Japanese.

OK, in summary Eva is: Impossible to Describe. NGE is, as you may know, Neon Genesis Evangelion, the name of a Anime TV Serie of 26 episodes created by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax. Since the last episode is a psycologycal-phylosophical ending for the serie, after the production it was made two movies: Evangelion, Death & Rebirth wich is a synapsis of the greater moments in the serie accompained with incredible music; and The End of Evangelion a movie wich leaves the highly-science-fiction-phylosophical-psycologycal supocicions done by every fan of the movie like a planet in the cosmos. God! If you havent seen the serie, do not, I repeat, do not see the movies. Rent it, buy it, or kill for it. It worths it. And believe me, its a privilege to have seen the serie first...

i hate the fact that this anime, which was made in japan with japanese characters, has to be have many of its important main characters turned white because studio heads think people won't accept a film with asian actors. i know that america is still a racist country not in creed but in casual thinking, but changing the main characters' race to pander to that thinking is insulting. this film isn't even with a major studio and already this has to be done because they think money can't be made. crouching tiger made over 100 mil in america a few years back, the bad boys films do well even if they suck, and even if you can't get american dollars this would more than make its money back in japan if its any good. i'd like to think that their are people in the movie biz that feel that people would see a blockbuster film without white main characters if the film is good. international BO is where its at anyway. on that note, evangelion is a hard sell as a 100 mil+ blockbuster in the first place. they have to find a way to have all the psychosexual stuff streamlined into something coherent, and if they have any of the religious stuff in it, it'll have to be super-abstract to prevent outrage from the religious groups. weta will probably make the mecha fights amazing, but if they can't find a way to deal with the weirder aspects of the series in a 2 or 3 hour movie, then this will flop hard, no matter how much whiteness you cram into it.

They should consider films like uh, say the new "Catwoman". We all know how impressed everyone is with that particular project. The first lesson in adaptation is that don't piss off the main fans. They are your first target audience before the general joe average out there who may gander a look at the film but will in no way line up first time to see the film. So if you start changing name, you already lose those hardcore fans who like the original show to begin with. What you have left is then the average mass who may or may not like the film. If they don't, then you'll be left with nothing but a box office failure. So don't ignore the original fans of this series that's all that I ask. Keep the character Japanese and cast Japanese actors. It's not like there's a dry spell of talented Japanese actors. In fact, I can think more of talented teenage actors in Japan than in the US.

With LOTR, Evangelion (if it does'nt suck), and King Kong (that will not suck), WETA's gonna be the downfall of the evil Inustrial Light & Magic. The minds at ILM have become too narrow to overcome WETA's very own brand of CGI/conventional FX, that has the advantage to concentrate on cost-effectiveness and TRULY grandiose and artistic imagery. ***By the way, Robofag is getting really horny at those pictures gigantic gay robots unleashed in city-smashing hardcore sex!!!***

When Battletech first came out many "mech" designs were taken directly from various anime series. From Macross they used both battlepod designs, pretty much every Destroid, and both the Battroid and Gerwalk versions of the Valkyrie were used as different nontransformable mechs. One mech was from Crusher Joe. There were more from other series I believe. This was shortly before Robotech made those design thefts so obvious. This is the main reason they shifted the timeline ahead and dumped all those ripped off designs so as not to get sued big time. On another note, Why would anyone complain that these EVA designs are very close to the original? What the hell is wrong with you people? So you would be happy if they didn't look at all like the original series designs? Anyone who complains about these designs is just a moron who could never be pleased. Also where did the idea come from that they were changing the ethnicity of any characters? Just because some people are too dumb to realize that the designers name was on the drawing, and NOT the characters name? Also Asuka was German, not Japanese. It would be totally within the spirit of the series to have an international group of characters from many countries. That is really what NERV was all about anyway.

I did an image search for Crusher Joe and I recognize the mech from a model kit. Dang I just remembered that the old Transformers series sold a toy of the Valkyrie, particularly Roy Fokker's design! Damn wish I didn't break that thing when I was a kid. Well I guess we can say that about a lot of toys from back then.

i just read the report that not only are they going to be changing the names of the charcters but they are also moving the entire base over to the USA and most of the principal charcters arent going to be in the final film. (pen pen and Hikari) although i dont agree with the names and the location move i do like the way the plug suits are done and MISATO's (or susan) suit. Does anyone whos seen the series agree with me on this?

Beautiful production art. I don't know how much better ILM could do, but as their efforts have shown, great FX don't make a movie great if it's got no heart. Shinji is the heart of the Eva series, if he's a bad actor the whole thing is lost. Heck, even if he's a good actor it'll be tough. Rei and Asuka are the fan favorites, but it's Shinji's story. Actually, there are a lot of obstacles for the movie before you even get to the casting, so maybe it's premature to mention it now. I'll hope for the best. But you KNOW the fans of the anime won't like it, no matter what happens.

First: I love Neno Genesis Evangelion. Second: This movie may be a good action movie. Third: It'll never be Evangelion!!! There are a lot of problems that are destructing the greatest anime series ever! First, what the f*** is New City? Common. I know that americans think that they're the best, but destruct a story that no american will ever be able to produce, that's ridiculous! The city's name IS, and WILL EVER BE TOKYO 3. Second, what the f*** r those names? Where is Shinji Ikari, or Asuka Langley, or Rei Ayanami? DON'T DESTRUCT A LEGEND OF THE ANIMATION!!! Third: The characters r 14 YEARS OLD CHILDREN!!! They r not those f****** hot american draws that destruct the original japanese animation!!! Fourth: The new Eva design is terrible. I've never seen anything worse before!!! The original is a lot better!!! Fifth: THIS SHOULD BE A JAPANESE MOVIE!!! WHY THE FUCKING AMERICANS MUST BE THE HEROES OF THE WORLD ALWAYS??? THAT'S JUST RIDICULOUS!!! Sixth: What happened with NERV? That's too SciFi! The original is a lot more real, a lot more dirt, a lot more human!!! And where is the MAGI computer? I mean, Balthasar, Casper and Melchior r some of the most important things on the original anime, so why Weta Works didn't show them? Seventh: Where is REI's (not Ray!!! This is a man name!!!) blue hair? That's something really important to the series (if somebody read the original manga or watch the original anime will understand) and they just took it away! Well, well. What can the world expect? After the destruction of Saint Seiya's (Knights of the Zodiac) series with one of the most terrible dubbing ever made and the exchange of the original music and sounds effects, transforming the series into a "child stupid thing". That's just expected. If God is good, no american will put the hands at the Akira's movie! Have u ever imagined? Kaneda been called Jack or something like that? Well... As I said, ridiculous... PS: Sorry for the "american" thing. I'm just too furious with all this. I mean, that's just getting out of the control! Just respect what is good and don't destruct! Peace for all people in the world!

Give the movie a chance, it hasn't even been made yet. And really, they have no excuse to censor the story, there's no such thing as controversy anymore, because people whine about EVERYTHING. Like how movies that haven't been made yet are gonna suck. The designs for the Evas look good, exept it cheapens then to have their mouths open all the time like frig'n dinosaurs, unit 02 shouldn't even be able to open it's mouth. The idea is to keep what they are sort of a mystery until later on.
Jan. 25, 2004, 3:52 p.m. CST
Really.. Why are these people trying to make a Live Action Film of Eva?! Eva is What it is.. Eva achieved the peak of what it could be.. It Cannot be made better, so why bother remake it? If it was 2040 and new revolutionary 3d animation could be applied ok, but it's not 2040. This is just the usual scam to take advantage of the numerus evangelion fans. It's useless.. what really makes me mad though, is that after the movie is out every single idiot will brag about and state his opinion about it thinking he knows what he's talking about.
Jan. 26, 2004, 5:40 p.m. CST
Alright... so WETA and other companies etc. is going to make a live action movie of evangelion? I'm not exactly having high hopes for this movie, considering the Final Fantasy Spirits within (which was all computer graphics) was already bad enough to watch, and now eva is going live action? I wonder how this will turn out... The sketches for this doesn't look bad at all... but, the sketches of the actresses??? Now that's a scary sight... I agree with a comment I read earlier... fans of eva don't want 30 year old women playing characters such as Asuka, Rei, and Misato, and please people... stick to the origional names!! We don't need any more generic names such as joe or bob (sorry if any of you have those names...), but come now, these characters from the anime are from Japan!! (Asuka is a different matter, but she's still Japanese) If you can't cast REAL Japanese actors/actresses for these characters then at least cast someone who is Asian to act as them! ^.^ This movie better be good...

I honestly think WETA must have their heads far enough up their asses to perform their own dentistry if they think this "Kate Rose" bullshit is gonna fly; however, this has no bearing on whether or not the movie's story will be good. The story could be just fine, even if the script was written by ADV who can't even do a goddamn dub without mispronouncing the show's fucking NAME. Amanda Winn Lee is a fucking moron who can't do a single fucking thing without so completely fucking it up that... I'm sorry, let me start over. The point that I'm trying to make is that even if the movie turns out okay despite all the horrible things that ADV and WETA will do to it, it still can never be as good as the original series. Even if they did a trilogy, it couldn't be as good, because you'd have to cram like 5 Angels into each movie and there wouldn't be anywhere near enough time for the REAL story to be developed... and that's not counting EOE. Now, if I was in charge of this project, I'd make it a TV series with a multi-racial cast, and the dialogue would be 40% Japanese, 40% English, and 20% German. Yui would be Japanese, Gendo (after changing his last name) would be white, Toji would be japanese, Kensuke (after changing his last name) would be American, Rei would look white (but her name can stay because she's "adopted"), etc.
Feb. 11, 2004, 9:52 p.m. CST
These are pretty awesome looking pictures, but my god the characters are Fukin ugly Who the hell is Kate Rose? Holy shit She makes be wanan puke... also there is some sort of mystery girl in there to, but she dosn't look so bad i guess. I'm all for it, just change up the characters a bit, I mean for christs sakes a eva movie without asuka is like penut butter without jam.

When i speak of N.G.E (Neon Genesis Evangelion, for those who wouldn't know what it means i'd suggest a realy fast search in the web in mangas and anime sites) i speak of one of the japanese masterpieces of sci-fi, mecha, and adventure anime. N.G.E. is one of the pillars of the kind and all the others that come after are in a way inspired by it ( for example there is another japanese manga called rahxephon which was inspired by some features of N.G.E.). Well then... jumping to the middle of the problem without delaying myself too much in useless descriptions for the true fans of this creation when i first read about this news i was a bit surprised and curious; i mean who wouldn't be curious to know what they are trying to do, and i even though that it migh be cool to look after such idea. the problem is that when i opened this page and i saw the captures of the city, robots and people i froze... i found the base and the environment well done even though its just a sketch and its not a definitive piece. Then my eyes focused on the eva units: on one side id say dreadfull, because they have nothing to do with the original anime and manga BUT in these pictures u do understand well that these units are not robots (as the true conaisseurs know) but humanoid fighting units with mechanical inserts, as for the armor in the anime u dont understand very well that the robot is wearing a restrictive armor (and not protective, even though it doesn't make difference for my reasonment) and is not a robot himself. in the second picture u see well that the eva 02 is wearing a helm and is not a robot. but as for the other units they have too many details and they drawn the essence of the existance of it... aside from these mere filosofical idiocy what shellshocked me were the characters. To change the names to make them more audible for the mass is not a sign of globalisation, but is a sign of sheer RACISM!!! yes ladies and gentlemens... at the present day all people have equal rights so why in this cursed world does a japanese name sound bad and an english one sound better... (i just gave the reason... sigh) plus if we see the character design i am quite disgusted with them... i mean : ray (rei) doesn't look at all special she is just an ordinary girl without any particular trait (no red eyes, no slim feature, doesn't express the lack of a soul ( wich initialy rei does not posses and after starting to know shinji something wakes up in her heart and mind she starts feeling something which are sentiments and she starts possesing a soul and changes slowly expression ... now tell me how the producer are supposed to push this in a 2 hours film...) rose (asuka ..... aaaaaargh that was traumatizing just having a look at her... i mean she can be ma grandma, she's an old crack who probably would excite some old 99 years old folks but the normal people would like some decent looking person) aside from the judgments i made just by looking and reading the stuff i must say 1 thing which in general hit all the movies if we see the big movies as final fantasy (loved the drawings but too boring), or some transformations from cartoon to reality (example dragonball, GTO [great teacher onizuka], etc...) were ridiculous, if i'd meet the guys who made it id laugh in their faces for quite some time... how can u have the guts to make something like that... and this is the same thing i say to those who are makeing this evangelion anime movie or how you would like to call it... for these reasons i believe that if such movie get out with the same name of the great master piece NGE then it would be the annihilation of a myth.

First of, the idea of a EVA movie is dum! They should make a following movie to Gsavior, cuz it was neet! And they should make Lucas Arts to do all the working, because ILM r00lz! Episodes One and Too were the best yet, visually stunning n everything! A EVA movie would be just plane stupid, the show was stupid, the actul plot was stupid. Not like Gundam, it's cool, is the best japanime ever! Oh, and I like Hero, cuz he's MY hero! ;) If they were did make a EVA flick, they should deffinitly make those changes, it wood be an American movie, this is America people! Be proud of your country! It woold be much more easier to understand, and more entertaning! Becuz yeah, Gundam is so awesum, it totally blows off EVA. Who do you think would win? A EVA or a Zaku II? THe Zaku, it doesn't run out of power after a minute! THat's just stupid to even try to think how the EVA would win, it cudnt, no way! To conclue, Gundam is way radder, they shud scrap the project now and restart with Gundam: Gsavior The Second!

Good Lord, man. In all my years of reading internet posts, of which there are more than a few, you are without a doubt the most inept, boorish, undereducated, inarticulate, buffoon I have e'er had the mispleasure of crossing paths with. To quote the pop-culture movie, "Billy Madison", "Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to you." In order that I might sleep a grin on my face tonight, I will demonstrate why you are a gibbering idiot. Reason One: Gundam is a no-plot piece of excrement cooked up by the fat-cats at Bandai to sell model kits to those less aware of their fiscal situation and reading level than I. Reason Two: All of your arguments against Neon Genesis Evangelion (hereafter NGE) were unfounded. They lacked proof, evidence, and any sort of a shred or reason. Reason Three: Star Wars: Episodes I and II pale in comparison to the Holy Trilogy. James Earl Jones knew how to voice-act, thus creating the legen of Darth Vader, and Alex Guinnes was, is, and always shall be Obi Wan. This, however, is neither here nor there. The simple fact of the matter is that not you, I, nor any of the other idiots on this thread should be able to determine whether foreseeable NGA movie in the future will be good, bad, or ugly based on twenty seven pre-production sketches. on one side for the gundam lover i would suggest him to stop reading gundam and interest himself at transformers or of superman. the point is that if japanese thing are not of our taste and you want to make them american (or english as you please) then stop reading and looking at gundam stuff since you hate japan so much... on the other side for the stink under nose lad i'd suggest to keep a more human tone... we are not in an english tea room! we are as if we were in a pub taking a drink and arguing about different things. i'd find dreadful to criticise someone not on his ideas but on how he exposes them... its not because you use nice little words that your argumentation is worthier than his (this doesn't mean that i am not of your same opinion, BUT at least i dont gibber about how someone writes bad). oh and by the way, i dont care how many errors i made writing this and how my vocabulary can be poor; it's not for that reason that my reasoning is less worthy than yours

Nowhere in either of my posts did I knock Gundam's reasoning for his grammar/spelling skills, or the lack thereof. I merely pointed out a deficiency of his, that he may endeavor in the future to better learn the language in which he both speaks and types. In this day and age, it has become increasingly hard to understand our fellow man with the onset of increasing "dialects" and slang, such as ebonics and 1337-speak. English needs not be tortured any further. If you don't have a large vocabulary, buy a thesaurus, if you can't spell well, buy a dictionary, if you can't make readable sentences, buy an English primer. While you might have something worthwhile to say, most people won't know so if you can't say it well. Thank you.

my my my... how entertaining that you have pointed the finger at me now. You see my dear absent minded fellow, it seems you might have forgotten some basic survival rules. These rules are called "Evolution". Oh but do not misunderstand my lack of courtesy by a direct offense to your intelligence, it's not in my intentions to do so; the only purpose of the words "absent minded" were to recall you the importance of the evolution in our history. If we had not evolved then it would appear to me that we'd still live on trees (you'll say that now we still live in caves, i might accept that reasoning if you had a realy particular point of view of the life), or maybe we would still try to move our arms waving them without understanding why we cant fly and the birds can... Altough i might accept that in some cases we must keep some aspects of our past life. I dont think that slang dialects as you please to call them are the future of speach, but to eradicate them means to stop evolution (which you might know doesn't mean only progress, in history you might see a clear example of what i mean just by looking at the dark age after the fall of the roman empire) and those who usualy try to stop evolution usualy get trampled by it. Dont worry yourself, i wont come during the night and stomp on you until you have understood the meaning of evolution and accepted it, it would be far from my approach to life. Aside from this petty bickering i was a bit suprised to see your answer just 3 hours after mine, it would appear you just live to answer to the people that post low english messages and to teach them the correct use of the great english. Oh sorry i think i'm running too fast with my immagination, i guess it's just a coincidence! righ? just to make the conversation more interesting: is english your first language? if not which is it? i'd be curious to know.

This post is presented in numerical factoid format. First: You commented on my posting three hours after your post and called me petty. You replied to me two minutes and eleven seconds afterwards. Judge not, lest ye be judged. Second: I dare not argue with the principle of evolution in most cases. However, letting a language decay into increasingly separated grunts and noises is not evolution, it's separation. At this time, were I to go to Chicago, much like I do every summer, I might encounter an African-American gentleman whom I've met in the past who speaks almost completely unintelligible English. Note: I have nothing against African-Americans or any other socio-economic and/or ethnic class, but I do have something against someone who is allegedly speaking my language in such a way that I can't understand them. Third: As you may have gathered from the second point, my first language is English, my second is French, and my third is Japanese. Fourth: How can I be "absent-minded" by "forgetting" about evolution when that was never even mentioned, much less the topic of any of the posts on this thread? Now, since I seem to be percieved as a self-inflated giver of unwanted opinion and advice, I leave you with this: Think out what you say, and watch what you type.

NGE was a great anime with such a fantastic storyline, if made into a live action leave it up to the one that made it, only the manga drawer can depict exactly what needs to be in the movie, as like changing the names, the age, the fucking storyline. Dont even do it, i think that Holywood should not even bother trying to make this a live action, due to the fact that i think Holywood can't make good live action from an anime, its good making live action from books but not anime, if it wants to get viewers stick to the storyline, stick with the japanese(and one german) cast, and the multi-cultural NERV workers. I think Japanese Live actions are better(Kamen Rider The first(soon the be The Next), DeathNote, Zebraman, Honey and Clover, etc)as for American movies, i already most americans would watch it only because it has sick too much CG and meaningless fighting. Rather than stick to the biblical-ish, psychological storyline.
