New THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST Trailer!

Published at:  Jan 16, 2004 4:22:35 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is coming to a theater near you... I'm so glad I can say that. I was so worried that it wouldn't get a wide release. But a subtitled dead language gore film about one of the greatest stories ever told is going to be opening in over 2000 screens nationwide. It is... One of the best films you'll see this year, because it was one of the best I saw last year, had it been complete it would have been at #3 on my list of 2003 films. An Extraordinary film. Here's the final trailer. Enjoy...

This sets the new standard on biblical films.

    by labluegundam

Now you can't afford to make biblical films that are either cheesy or sucky or both. Mel Gibson raised the bar into the Nth degree. It will be funny to see biblical movies with the scenes like God and Satan kung-fu fighting in Matrix-style. :)

    by halo1982

I thought the movie wasn't going to have subtitles....when did they decide to add them? Or is that just for the trailer? Subtitles kinda take away some cool points...I was looking forward to the experience of not knowing the language and trying to figure out whats going on...ah well I'll probably still go see it.

Let me just say that I am a christian and am sick and tired of so many crap movies coming out with our "lable" on it. It's such a relief to see Mel Gibson portray, what is the most meaningful thing in my life and countless others, in a great way that is accesable to the masses. I can't stand TBN and all the garbage they pump out. Maybe they can see that a movie with a spiritual message doesn't have to be cheesy and non-realisic. Way to go Mel!

The international trailer is much better ...

    by godoffireinhell

It's the same as the one that was "leaked" long before the film had distribution and a rating. The one where you actually see blood and the nail places in the palm. But this second theatrical trailer is still much, much better than the first one which was just week and made the film look like a movie-of-the-week. I, too, am worried about the sepia tones in the trailer. There's this scene in which Mary looks into the camera with an outstretched hand that is in sepia in this trailer but is in full color in the international trailer. I thought it had much more power as an image in full color. I hope Gibson did not change it.

    by vermifax

No one's 'bent' and yes, black people are mentioned throughtout the Bible (Jesus, of course, being one of them). I'm just wondering why they are not in this movie or any other movie about Jesus. Wait.........I'm wrong. A Black guy DID play Judas Escariot in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. He sang badly and then he hung himself (as if we needed MORE images of Black people hanging from trees). Hollywood can keep the King James lie up and running if it wants to.

I remember it had the brilliant music from Rabbit Proof Fence by Peter Gabriel (i think) which just seemed to fit into every scene so well.
Also someone who has seen the film tells me that whilst most actors used are fairly light skinned the actor who plays Judas is a dark skinned arab, anyone know if this is really true ?...i hope not.

This has gotten old, the constant claiming of Jesus as one race

    by jasondkeldar

Saying something loud enough and long enough does not change history. The assumption that there were Ethiopian Jews is based solely on the claims by Ethiopian holy men that they are the lost tribes of Israel, which dates back centuries before Jesus' time. Are we saying that the Ethiopian Jews "Weren't" lost after all?? Then there is the argument people make regarding Ham, Noah's cursed son, who was turned black by God to shame he and his seed and curse them to hewers of wood and bearers of blah-de-blah. Picking and choosing verses and text from the Bible to support your political beliefs is a tactic that worked well for fascists and others who seeked to misuse messages. The Ham verse was popular with racist groups, and the "hair like White wool" verse from Revelations was used by Nation of Islam arguers even before Malcolm X. Ask a Hassidic acolyte how soft, bouncy and bodywaved his hair is before you assume that means African. Nubian, Bantu, Watusi, and other tribes are African-American related. The loors are those of Arabic-Turrkish-Plaestinian descent. Semitic refers to Judean area residents, former and current. Tribal shifts did not flow that far as to bring entire regions of Judea under Numbian or others' sway. The presence of Nubian kings in Egypt is a given, but so was the presence of Egyptian kings in Egypt. As for Cleopatra, she was Greek, and no amont of arguing will convince the world that Greeks are African-tribe related. Be proud of your heritage as so few Americans are brave enough to be. Entire segments of the population call themselves white with little or no claim to it, including my family. Passsing white is only effective with persons of mixed white blood. Racist whites are quick to exclude you if your Prussian, Saxon, Nordic blood is polluted with even Franco-or Italian blood, and heaven forbid you are such as me with Gaelic, Celtic, and Amerindian blood diluting the Welsh/English and German in me. The point I am making is simply this. Jesus was Jewish, born of a Jewish mother and Jewish father. Claiming otherwise without any documentation is fruitless, petty, and grasping. As a non-Jew, as all Caucasian raced people, Asian-raced people, and variants of African races, be they tribal, North African, or Asia Minor-peopled lands, I am Gentile(outside the chosen). However, according to the doctrine of every Christian faith, Jesus mistered to all who came to him, and his followers were told to do the same. As Jewish men in a world controlled by Roman citizenry, they were slow to spread the message to non-Jewish peoples in the beginning, but they gained numbers eventually until they could expand to other peoples, sacrificing themselves according to Roman records, who made light of this "cult" and dismissed them until citizens began to believe and adopt the faith. Roman records also bear witness to he havoc they wreaked with slave trades, due to humanitarian shifts in the populace and the lessening of emperor-worship due to the strictures on false-gods inherent in a monotheistic religion. They paid the price in blood of their faith, martyring themselves in the cause as Christ himself, their Messiah, had done decades before. They did not grow weaker, only stronger, til Constantine, needing soldiers and citizens adopted the faith after a vision, and established the religion as safe to practice. Jesus was Jewish, his followers mostly non-Jewish by then. Still the early iconic images of him were not altered to reflect Italian, French or more Caucasian features. They still represented him as Jewish, nor did they alter the Bible to say he was otherwise, which a deceptive conspiracy could easily have done in those early years. Insistin on casting a non-Jewish appearing Jesus to assuage African-American activists and militants is akin to the changing of historical events wanted by factions in New York regarding 9/11 and the raising of the flag. Truth is indelible. Political maneuvering lends less credence to your cause. Ask Strom Thurmond's racist supporters how they feel knowing he kept a black mistress and has a bi-racial daughter. Living a lie, even if only in your own mind, does not make the lie true or right. He spouted off rhetoric dripping racism because it suited his constituency for him to do so. Spouting off about a black Jesus to promote worship of a man--Elijah Muhammad--is futile as well. Malcolm's arguments, illustrated well by Spike Lee as Denzel's "red" confronts Christopher Plummer's prison chaplain are the same soapbox pipe dreams spouted off by militant little MIchael on "Good Times". Does that mean they are accurate, true, or even well-intentioned? No. In my home city, local religious groups even said in a recent paper, promoting their poorly attended "Black Santa" were arguing that black parents should not take their kids to a white Santa with comments like, "How does anyone know Santa Claus is white anyway?" and "If all you show Black Children is a Black Santa Claus, then they won't assume he is white." This revisionistic attitude is what gave us court decisions that claim God as a word is a violation of the separation of Church and State. The very document this argument is based on mentions God several times and was even sworn to by its signees on God. Going one step further the states that ratified the Constitution, agreeing to bind themselves and further admitted states to this Constitution and its rights, guarantees and protections were also making oaths and law by "the Grace of God", "God the Creator", and "Our Almighty Father". Failing to go through legal channels to have the rebel flag removed from Mississippi's state flag, an activist sued in federal court for religious grounds, stating that the flag sported St Andrew's Cross, with stars and bars overlaying it. Fortunately heraldic intentions are not deemed religious and the "X" of the flag was termed a slatier, even though the cross is mentioned in our original battle flag, designed by George Washington when referecing it away from it being the symbol of Imperial Britain. Away from the point I have gotten, yes, but allow my Yoda speech to finish this argument--Trashing this movie based on a lack of racial sensitivity is a misleading attack by those who cannot stand to see any sort of religious film get any approval whatsoever. Granted, "Left Behind" and Omega Code were poor movies with shaky foundations, but this is not a religious film as it is a direct representation of what over 1/3 of the world views as an ancient historical document. True, the scientific and pseudo-scientific community would have many believing that noone in the world believes in the Bible these days, over half of Americans profess Christian beliefs, and there are over One Billion Catholics on the planet, not to mention the other denominations and faiths related to Christianity. Muslims believe in a martyr named Jesus but reserve divine providence for Muhammad, Mohamet, Mohammed. This does tend to indicate more do acknolwedge a higher power than don't. Some may lapse from, fight against, or just outwardly deny the existence of a Creator, but the majority of peoples believe in a higher existence, with a guiding force behind it. Physicists are even claiming that the order of the Universe is too easy to be random, that the cause of existence, matter, energy, time, and the fabric of space itself is at its mst basic level possibly just simply willed into being. If believing Jesus is Black gets you through the night, then more power to you. Consider it your doctrine as Catholics have catechism and Baptists, Chruch of Christ' members, Pentecostals, Methodists, and Episcopalians have their own professions of faith. Simply add this to your statement: "I profess to believe that, all provable evidence to the contrary, Jesus--Immanuel, Christ, the Son of God--is not of Jewish descent as I am Anti-semitic enough to believe that African tribes usurped the Israelites' homes and populated Judea with African tribesmen, taking on Jewish tribal identities and representing themselves not as black but as copperskinned. This I believe and espouse wholeheartedly." Good luck with that.

    Amazing

    by flim

When I first heard about this project, I thought that Mel had forfeit his entire career on the basis of one (for lack of a better term) vanity project. Then I heard that all the dialogue would be in Aramaic, with no subtitles. That sealed the deal for me. Months later, I see the first trailer; and I'm completely flabbergasted at the genius of the film. It looks to me like a film that celebrates Jesus as a man, not as the son of God, much like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST did. As blasphemous as most Christian peoples say that flick was, I honestly consider it the greatest passion play ever put on film, from a man who was in training to be a Catholic priest - Martin Scorsese - and a man raised as a Calvinist - Paul Schrader. Now, here comes this film, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, which once again threatens my dislike of anything Christian. Now, I consider myself to be a Christian, in that I believe that there was a man named Jesus Christ who lived 2 000 years ago and changed the world as it was then. As for believing in God or any word in the Bible, no, I can't say as I do. But I digress, I think that this film is visual storytelling in it's most pure form, and it's brave, and it's striking. My only hope is that it does decent business (most likely better overseas than domestically) so that it can act as a catalyst in giving other filmmakers the courage to do what they feel in their heart must be done. There's much too much pablum being fed to film audiences these days, and I hope for an end to it, soon.

This looks like its going to be a powerful film. After the success of Braveheart, and its ground breaking battle scenes, which have set the standard for the recent epics, including LOTR, one probably shouldn't expect anything but greatness with Gibson's direction. Makes you wish he had directed more films since winning the oscar. Being a devout Catholic, I'm curious to what he what have done with Tolkien's Catholic myth, The Lord of the Rings.
