VAN HELSING Trailer Coming Friday

Published at:  Jan 13, 2004 8:51:39 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... The trailer for VAN HELSING is gonna hit the web this Friday over at Apple's Trailer site, we'll keep ya posted on that one, but for now... we have a bit of dish about the trailer itself from one who has seen it. I really hope this movie kicks ass, the draft of the script I saw had ludicrous one-liners after every single death in the piece, and the tone was all over the place. I'm hoping that Sommers got a handle on it and that the tone of the artwork we've seen and hopefully this trailer ring true to the promise this project has. Here ya go

I saw the VAN HELSING trailer over the Weekend (it hits theatres this Friday) and let me just say that it's "Indiana Jones" meets "The Tomb of Dracula".  You will wet your pants at the tease this trailer provides. Beautiful, gothic and epic, all at the same time.  The effects, although not yet finished, look fantastic! wait till you see the Wolfman and Hugh go at it in mid-air over pit of fire!  It's only 1 minute 32 seconds.  Boy I wish it was longer.  I would say SPIDER-MAN 2 and VAN HELSING are the top 2 contenders for Summer 2004 box office crown!

Warm regards,

Gene Wolfman

    by frogsfata$$

I'd normally start hurling the insults, but I think Hugh Jackman is too good of an actor for this to be all bad (if we're assuming it will be a la Tomb Raider as opposed to being a la Indiana Jones).

I'm keeping my hopes up here, as the concept has so much promise.

    As for Indiana Jones Comparisons...

    by greatczersghost

Maybe we should wait till the film actually comes out and somebody sees it. I mean, trailers for movies like Gigli and LXG didn't look the suck-fests they turned out to be. Also, having just rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark this weekend, I have to say that it's pretty ballsy to compare anything to Indiana Jones. Those movies stand the test of time, regardless (and maybe even because) of how much filmmaking has changed since the days they were made. My wife had never seen Raiders before, but she was hooked 10 minutes into it. I couldn't say the same thing about half the movies made today, cool FX or otherwise.

    by zinc_chameleon

The one-liners could kill this movie. I just saw "Vampire Hunter D" again after about a ten-year break, and I loved it for its bleakness and somber tone. Nobody should come out clean messing with vampires and werewolves.

    CGI werewolves and vampires suck

    by riskebiz

I'd be more excited if the Wolfman were more Lon Chaney than the CGI
"American Werewolf in Paris"/"Underworld" werewolves they have in films these days. I don't expect much from the director of the Mummy movies except monsters CGI'ed to death. If they were indeed going for the Universal Monster reboot, they should have gone more traditional or at least animatronic. I was not enthused with the look of Dracula in this film. He looked like a poor cousin to Gary Oldman's crazy hairdo Dracula. I hope they don't screw up Frankenstein too much, but I don't think they are going too traditional there either. How I would have loved a revival of the Karloff Frankenstein look. Remember that great old school CGI Frankenstein test that was on this site a few years ago by that got sh!t canned by the powers that be before it got off the ground? That was cool. I swear, if they were serious about reviving the Universal Monsters, they should have named the Wolfman character Lawrence Talbot and Frankenstein should have closely resembled Karloff's version and Dracula ... well they could have gone the Vlad Tepes route there in terms of look instead of Lugosi and it would have been cool. I think Hugh Jackman can pick entertaining films to appear in and so I'm giving this film the benefit of the doubt no matter how much that hack Mummy director can screw things up.

From the writer/director of DEEP RISING!

    by billemic

Other than Hugh Jackman and the Vampire Hunter D-vibe of the production artwork, this film has very little going for it. The Mummy and its sequel work as light, mildly entertaining popcorn movies. However, I doubt that Sommers actually has the ability to truly craft a subtle, somber piece of film akin to Vampire Hunter D. As such, I won't be surprised if Van Helsing does contain cheezy one-liners and goes for a more breezy style. Most audiences seemingly don't want to digest a heavy, tonal, and violent film like Vampire Hunter D...and most fanboys don't want to sit through a light-hearted PG-13 "monster fest". I'd rather watch the 80's classic MONSTER SQUAD.

    by zappaman

C'mon, this is news? "Wait until you see the trailer?" How about posting something after it's actually up? Seriously, how dumb do the studios and Harry think we are? God, it's pathetic how this site is used by the studios. Very sad. I know for a fact the studios do this and I've seen the trailer. Usually, I refrain from commenting on trailers since I create them for a living, but this trailer sucks. Yes, there's fast cutting, shitty music and bad...very bad CGI. ESPECIALLY the fighting over the fire. If this "mole" hadn't pointed that out, it would have been a little less blatant that it came from Universal. Hey, Uni-Publicity...try being a little more sublte next time. And shame on Harry for putting this up. What next...an article from George Lucas saying "wait until you see the next STAR WARS! Man, I can't wait until you guys see it!" Pathetic.

    by industrykiller

To put it simply the guy sucks. The Mummy movies were terrible. TERRIBLE. The lowest filth of film. After teh second one I swore I would never pay money to see another one and that still stands. There is no way someone of his low level of talent is going to rise above bad source material. No way. He's a studio puppet and nothing more. Also Hugh Jackman has no edge whatsoever. He's a talented actor and he's got a ton of charisma but I question whether he can play dark characters. I find his Wolverine unconvincing at best. He doesn't come off anything like the brooding been through hell and back Wolverine of the comics. He's just not right for that role. And if you think Sommers is going to direct a dark atmospheric film your out of your mind. The studios won't allow quality unless a director fight for it and Sommer's is not that director.

just look at the furor Moriarty's Superman script review on this site created. The bad publicity it created made the studio completely rethink the project thank God. Also many people who work in the industry have written in saying that some very high level people read the site including the talkbacks. Internet film geeks like us are the first ones to call foul over a terrible project and that kind of publicity snowballs creating bad word of mouth. So yes Blok, Universal does care what we think.

    by st.buggering

The guy has a serious problem with restraint. He has the self-control of a two-year-old. Just because you can afford to blanket the screen with CGI creatures, it doesn't mean that it's the best approach. Of course, since it made gobs of money, I doubt he's learned anything I'd like him to.

The danger of movie studios reading talkbacks...

    by magilla gorilla

who do you believe? Do you believe everyone on this talkback is a real fan airing his/her real opinion. Or are there studio agents among us, spewing negative buzz about rival studios projects? Sounds preposterous? Return of the King is headed to make over a billion dollars worldwide. There are HUGE sums to be won or lost with most any major studio release. With so much money at stake, is it such a far-fetched notion that studios would commandeer internet forums in order to promote their own product and try to redirect the audience away from the competition? Sony resorted to conjuring up a phony movie reviewer (at a real newspaper!) to promote its films just a few years back. And don't forget the Blair Witch phenomenon. I don't trust anything I read on the internet when it comes to opinions about a film's quality (or lack thereof). Film studios would be foolhardy to place much stock in internet ramblings, as well.

    by gere's assgerbil

Deep Rising was silly and stupid, but also a lot of fun. The Mummy was great. A perfect summer blockbuster. Mummy Returns: still good but not as memorable, and with a terrible CG monster in the climax. If Sommers puts the same effort into Van Helsing that he showed in The Mummy, it should be a good time. And enough with all the Vampire Hunter D comparisons! Vampire Hunter D stole his schtick from the Shadow who probably ripped it off of somebody else. Nothing is original anymore, get over it.

    by gere's assgerbil

In a fistfight? Spider-Man, hands down. At the box office? Again, Spider-Man. In the battle of which movie has worse CGI? SPIDER-MAN. That's what happens when the first movie takes in US$800M worldwide. Sony had no incentive to fix the ridiculous cartoon Spider-Man. The real contest for bad CGI looks to be between Spider-Man 2 and Hellboy. That last scene in the Hellboy trailer with the squid arms. Whew, just awful, awful stuff.

What the fuck? Who the hell writes "Boy I wish it had gone on longer" ??!! Again, I repeat, What the fuck? Secondly, Stephen Summers is a total joke. The mummy feels are not "fun" as people keep saying. They sucked, lacking any quality or realism, or anything remotely tangible to a good film. The art for Van Helsing was so promising, as was the casting of Hugh Jackman, but if this is as bad as LXG (I didn't Tomb Raider 2, since the first was a debacle), then we have this scary phenomenon: For every X2, or the first X-men, or Spiderman, we literally have 4-5 piece of shit 100 million half-assed efforts. Jesus Christ, this is depressing...

I'm so with St. Buggering on Sommers. Deep Rising was cool and goofy and The Mummy was pretty enjoyable (despite Balsa Boy Fraser in the lead), but he really lost the plot on The Mummy Returns. Woeful CGI trying to cover over the fact that the flick was just heated over remains. Sommers seems to have Lucas-itis: drown the screen in gaudy eye-rape and hope for the best. Still, I hope I'm wrong with Van Helsing as the concept is kinda cool. But, hey, I'm just a fag that'll pitch up to any Jackman flick, so just color me happy right from the getgo. Oh, and Gere's AssGerbil - even from the trailer you can tell that the CGI Spidey is all-improved over the cartoony original. And Hugh as Van Helsing or not, the web-slinger is gonna rule come this Sommer(s). (Hey! See what I did there?)

How's Indy gonna get out of this one!" You never think that about Brendan Fraser's character in "The Mummy". You just think "that's a pretty cool giant-sand-face effect". They design these films from the explosions down instead of from the characters up. And that's why I worry about "Van Helsing". sk

    by industrykiller

"If you think you can do any better, get in the business and lets see if you can pull off some quality stuff." Every once and a while some fool will come along and utter a phrase similar to that and it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many times I read it it never stops being asinine. So unless you are a big time Hollywood director you shouldn't be allowed to criticise films? You must understand how retarded that sounds. If that were the case we would be fed nothing but studio dreck like The Mummy. Its because of criticism that good films are allowed to be made. And I'm sure there are alot of people on this site who are trying to get into the business or are already there. Just because they aren't working with a studio doesn't mean their talent isn't twice that of a hack like Sommers. And about Jackman's Wolverine, sorry he lacks grit. Never did I believe that he is a ruthless killing machine or that he had the weight of an incredibly harsh life hanging on his shoulders. He is undeniably a softer characters than he is when he is written by the best in the comics. Simple as that. To say no one in the world could have done it better is stupidity. I'm sure there is some unknown somewhere who could have gotten it just right.

    by mr. high

Honestly, I loathe Hugh Jackman, because he had the poor taste to bring Wolverine to the screen, thus completing my every qualification for hating an actor. (It's #12 if you're wondering. It reads: BRINGING AN OVEREXPOSED, NEEDLESSLY PRESENT IN EVERYTHING, BADLY WRITTEN, AND FUCKINFANBOY FAVORITE COMIC CHARACTER TO THE SCREEN WILL INSTANTLY INVALIDATE RULES 1-11 AND WILL SKIP STRAIGHT TO UTTER HATRED IN ANY FORM, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE FILM IS!) Irrational? Definitely, but justified whenever someone goes on and on about how fucking great Wolverine is. He sucks. He has claws and a healing factor and that's all. Plus he's FUCKING CANADIAN!!!!!! He has no memory, most fights he gets into, he can't remember why he's fighting in the first place and basically, just a character that has run rampant through the Marvel universe and has been allowed to garner a much bigger fan following than he ever deserved. So Fuck Wolverine. Fuck him right in his stupid, inbred (how else do you explain the nose, too close together eyes and excessive body hair?), and yes, GODDAMNED CANADIAN ASS!

That said, if I happen to see this flick, it will probably be either total shit, or lots o' fun, "Mummy"-style. Who cares about this fucking movie anyway? The banner I saw over the weekend looked like what you'd see inside fat goth's rectum. All green, bit of leather and lots of sharp things and a couple of bats who look as they'd rather be anywhere but there.

GIVE A MOVIE WITH POTENTIAL A FUCKING CHANCE!!!! christ sakes, Van Helsing is a super kick-ass character, as are frankenstein, wolfman, dracula, as for doing wolfman as live action, who ever said that deserves 2 b carstrated, that would a diabolical....thats like saying "jeez, i saw those stop-go anamations on the jurassic park dvd, and they look awesome". fellas, it's about progression, the passage of time, dennis murien (cant spell his last name) bit the bullet, he saw CGI's potential and went with it, a the dinosaurs in JP still look great, and that was 11 years ago- in the mummy films, imothep looks fantastic when hes decomposed....the point is, doing the villians as live action, as were done in the 1930's and 1940's is just NOT GONNA WORK, like yoda in SW2, for what they need these characters 2 do, live action just isn't possible. i hope this film is great, it deserves 2 do it's characters justice, and more importently, i hope it SHUTS U FUCKERS RIGHT UP

    good fun

The trailer looks like a lot of fun. Good multiplex popcorn stuff...
No academy awards here (maybe technical) but I bet it will be entertaining. I like arthouse cinema as much as the next guy but somtimes escapist stuff like this is as good as a short holiday.

    Just watched trailer

I thought visually, it looks like quite a spectacular film. Lots of interesting sets, costume design, and the vampire vixens look more convincing in the trailer than those lame still shots we got. HOWEVER, I *hated* nearly every line of dialogue that Hugh spoke and whatever it was that threw Hugh off the building (was that Frankenstein) looked atrocious, worse than the Hulk and Mr. Hyde from The League. I just wish they could have taken this serious, played Hugh as the tormented, reluctant but determined hero (like Vampire Hunter D). It's not that hard! You don't HAVE to deliver the by-the-numbers popcorn flick that people are expecting, Sommers! Argh.

You're a fucking asshole. But I guess you must be really smart because you didn't like The Mummy.

    Van Helsing trailer

    by danger mouse

Who would want a totaly serious po-faced movie about Dracula, Frankenstien and the wolfman!?! That would suck as much as the HULK. This stuff realy can't take itself too seriously (though of course it shouldn't be farcical, just a little tonge in cheek). I think the thing throwing him off the building is Mr. Hyde from the opening sequence...

    Frankenstein

Did anyone read the book? Frankenstein is the name of the doctor. The monster was never named.

    we know

    by danger mouse

Yes we know the Dr. is Frankenstien but it has become usual to name the monster after the maker like he is his son... BTW Dr. Frankenstien was a real guy! i guess all the great stories have at least some truth behind them!

    Serious

    by billemic

Hmm, well, if I can't get a "serious" take on the character, I'd at least settle for a complete lack of one-liners. That's all I ask.

    original stories

    by danger mouse

I think if you want serious versions of these characters you need to look to versions of the original single character stories - not cross-overs that are done purely for fun. I agree though that the cheesy one liners are too much...There is a fine balance with this kind of thing.
