George Romero commands your attention to DIAMOND DEAD!

Published at:  Jan 13, 2004 8:30:30 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Every now and again you check out a project that you haven't heard much about and you become obsessive about wanting to see the film. That's what happened to me after I got a phone call about THE DIAMOND DEAD today. #1 - George Romero directing will always speak to me as a film loving geek. #2 - Richard Hartley composing a new genre rock film... well that gets me excited as well. Then I went and checked out their site: DiamondDead.Com and reading their letters to folks like Christopher Lee and David Bowie... their intent in trying to secure Johnny Depp for this... Romero's musings... And the promise to do this through the entire process... well, I can't wait! Here's what they sent me...

Producer Andrew Gaty (Heart of Midnight), Director George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and Composer Richard Hartley (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) are working to bring The Diamond Dead (a rock/horror/comedy) to the screen. What makes this project any different from any other project in the works right now? It's simple; their foresight to involve Cameron Multimedia, Inc. to launch what is becoming a tremendous internet success story.

Visitors to the site will have the opportunity to see and be a part of the entire filmmaking process. Regularly updated diary entries from the makers, live chats. Q&A along with contests and downloadable goodies will help to make this open forum style of filmmaking a success.

DiamondDead.com went live with their first revision on Dec. 1, 2003 and received such overwhelming attention that an entirely new engine had to be built to accommodate the traffic. A.G. Productions and Cameron Multimedia are offering viewers of the website the opportunity to see the REAL process of getting a film made by allowing fans to cast their votes for casting decisions, read excerpts from the screenplay as well as director and producer script notes and even read actual production emails via the "Mail Crypt."

Team Xbox has also gotten involved in the project and is helping to drive the Open Source development of the Diamond Dead video game for major gaming platforms. This project will be open to the same types of suggestive development ideas via the official DiamondDead.com site as well as TeamXbox.com.

In addition, Final Draft is going to be an official sponsor of "The Script" (a portion of the site dedicated to screenwriting and the process of writing a movie).

In short, DiamondDead.com may stand up and be counted as one of the most unique entertainment projects to ever go online!

Of particular "News" interest is Romero's Diary entry from the 7th, where he discusses his other film projects in addition to this one. Check it out!

  • The only was this could be better is if he jumped on Twilight of the Dead immediately afterward, before of course kicking the ass of everyone involved with greenlighting the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Woo hoo!

This is a bunch of horseshit!

    by guerillatokyo

Romero is a lazy ass burnout. He makes up bullshit stories about how studios won't back a 4th dead flick because of 9/11, and then turns around and tries to make bullshit like this. If this even gets made, it will be awful, and it will be a direct to video job. I used to be a big Romero fan, now he's just dead to me.

    music in "trailer"

    by 81666

the art looks awful so does the premise, but does anyone know the name of the song that plays during the offensively bad "trailer" for the movie...
i'm guessing, it's an original tune for the movie though...

    Dog Meat or Dog Crap?

    by joey_the_t

Some people would prefer to refer to Diamond Dead as "dog meat". I prefer to refer to Diamond Dead as "dog crap". I would like to meet Romero to try and figure him out. His last "epic" was Bruiser. The first half was entertaining. Then it got really stupid, really fast. Bruiser was dog crap. Any sane person can look at Diamond Dead's script and know that it and all other Romero flicks - will be dog crap. I liked the Dead trilogy. I own them. Diamond Dead seems to be as rediculous as John Russo's 30th Anniversary Edition of Night. My message to Romero, pull your head out of your rear or hang it up! If you were smart, you'd make another zombie sequel or re-make your own damn movies. Hollywood caught onto the fact that zombies can sell! Buy a clue! Stick to the Knitting! (God forgive me, I quoted Tom Peters [Satan]) Talk to a Fan!

    Romero, Cronemberg, Verhoeven...

    by genericgeek

...are some of the precious few who still want to express ideas with the movies they make. Unfortunately, most people can't see past the gore and guts. Yes, maybe "Bruiser" was a bit slight, but it still made me think. Over the Xmas vacation I watched the "Day of the Dead" DVD, and it reminded me that Romero is one of the most intelligent filmmakers working today. So, even if "Diamond Dead" is a zombie musical comedy and not the dream-project "Dead Reckoning", my butt will still be in the seat on opening day. So there, philistines.

Dare I say that Romero's time has passed....

    by manaqua

this looks gay as fuck. The website they link you too is just an eyesore. If this is what we can expect then no thanks. WTF were they thinking? unbelievable. Fuck, i could make a site that rocks that shit outta the water. It pains me to say this, but, just like John Carpentar, Romero has not evolved with the time. There was a day when their voices did not fall on deaf ears, but alas the world has passed them by. If a filmamaker does not evolve with the medium, they get left in the dust.

    doesn't seem THAT gay...

    by duanejones

...and anything that distracts GAR from _dusk of my long-shot reputation_ (see the commentary here and elsewhere -- george gets no love from even fanboys at this point) (& the consensus on _bruiser_ is startlingly accurate for aicn -- first half rocks, second half cocks) has to be a good thing. d-doesn't it? george making an unqualified excellent film for the first time in a generation (!!! can you believe it?) would be unexpected good news. let's find out -- always thought george had a for-real comedy in him, as opposed (include _creepshow_ here) to the inadvertant variety he's been responsible for over the past, oh, 20-odd years...
