A Too Brief Report On Cameron Crowe's ELIZABETHTOWN!

Published at:  Jan 08, 2004 10:03:02 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Dobler 75 here apparently has read the script to ELIZABETHTOWN (wish I could) and provides the scantest of tidbits. This one is set to shoot in Kentucky relatively soon and hopefully it'll be released around Christmas so we can get a righteous present of cinematic proportions. Here ya go...

Hey Harry

Just wanted to give ya the skinny on the Crowe Bar's latest.

Apparently due to him sucking, Ashton Kutcher has been booted from this gig.  Cameron apparently fired him, then was like "You've just been PUNK'D", and Ashton started to come back, and CC said "No, seriously, you suck, get off my set."  Cameron has been auditioning new actors for the lead role including Colin Hanks, and a certain Mister Franco from the Spidey series.  If it were me, and I am not Cameron Crowe, though I wish I were since Nancy Wilson is freaking amazing, I would want the best chemistry possilble between my two leads.  The female lead being Kirsten Dunst, leads me to believe a great choice would be her current beau, Maggie G's bro Jake Gyennthahall or however the hell you spell it.  He was great in that Crowe tribute film (Moonlight Mile) and The Good Girl, and it seems like he could be the kind of guy that could bring the emotional depth needed to fill out Crowe's Characters.

As for the script as a whole (don't ask me how I got it), WOW.  CC has done something here that, if it translates well, will knock you over.  The characters are so well developed, and you can feel the Crowe-ness oozing out of it.  This covers the entire emotional spectrum.  From the darkest moments of your life, to feeling a love that ivades your entire being.  Dunst's flight attendant character is a sweet, southern belle, optimistic in her outlook on life, and really Drew's (the male lead's) saving grace.  Dunst should earn some noms if she brings the character justice.

I know that this site is all about the spoilers, and personally, I am too, but there is something about Cameron Crowe's films that hits my sweet spot, and I almost feel guilty about posting this stuff on this site that I've never written to before.  So I will say this, Elizabethtown will not dissapoint the way that Vanilla Sky did.  There are poignant moments througout, and Drew's dark side is REALLY dark.

In closing, I believe that Crowe can (for the most part) do no wrong.  VS was an OK film that had many Crowe moments, but it followed Almost Famous, a REAL amazing Crowe film.  Elizabethtown is a Crowe script, that hopefully, will become another amazing Crowe film.

Has any off-screen couple ever had chemistry on-screen?

    by mortsleam

No. Hire Gyllenhaal (sp?) 'cause he's a good actor. Then fire Dunst, 'cause she's merely mediocre. Get Scarlett Johannsen (sp? again) in there.

A BS scoop? What the suck?!

    by boxclocke

Um... Interesting thing about this article... is that ANYONE COULD HAVE WRITTEN THIS WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING THAT HASNT BEEN PRINTED IN A MILLION PLACES! Wow. Seriously. "Kutcher was fired." Well, no fruggin shee-it. "I have the screenplay, don't ask me how I got it, but its great and I don't wanna tell you anythign about it." BS. And really bad BS at that. Way to be an awesome scooper... except not really.

Get with the program. Where have you been. Harry ignores all the real news and sticks to his "scoops".

Getting rid of Kutcher was a great move.

    by justoneoftheguys

    Obviously, right?

I read this script prior to knowing who was set to play the role. When I found out that it was Punked boy, I was upset. I think he is talented in his own way and good for certain things...but this is not his role. It would have been terrible to waste such great material on an actor that hasn't matured enough for this part.

Anyway, the script is great. What he does in the last ten pages of this script rivals anything Crowe has done. K.D. will be perfect for the female lead.

Any of the names mentioned above would be better than Kutcher.

Apparently my browser decided to post a response before I could write the comment. I actually have read the script, and I must say I disagree with this review. You'll probably all just dismiss this comment, but I was very under-whelmed by the script, and unless there are some serious re-writes going on, Elizabethtown could easily be his worst film.

    I fuckin' LOVE Vanilla Sky

    by 33.3rpm

The teeming throngs still haven't wrapped their minds around it's humor, audacity and incredible performances by Cruise and Kurt Russell. Whatever. More for me.

Elizabethtown will be Crowe doing what he does best, with more wisdom and experience under his belt. It's going to be absolutely wonderful.

Vanilla Sky was pretty great, in my opinion.

    by pumpymcass

I think it is just one of those completely polarizing films for many people. I liked it better than the original because Crowe made it his own with the use of pop culture references within the script that were vital to the story (Dylan album cover, etc). And the soundtrack was incredible (except for McCartney's gay little title song, jeez). It was in my top five of 2001, along with Monster's Ball, In the Bedroom, Mulholland Drive, and Memento. Wow, that was a good year. Too bad this year can't compare...

    Crowe is very overrated

    by beamish13

FAST TIMES and SAY ANYTHING are very good, and SINGLES has some great moments, but his other films aren't much to talk about. JERRY MAGUIRE isn't very funny at all.

    by bostonjh

Is this movie ACTUALLY going to be set in that town and film there? That's going to be a little much for me to handle; seeing the strip-mall glory of that town on the big screen could be overwhelming.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. Though I may have to make a special trip home during the filming so Kirsten Dunst can bask in my overall hotness.

    Something to look forward to

    by oompacabra

I picked up three days of background work on VS just so I could watch Crowe at work. What a delight! He was sometimes an active participant in the scene, acting almost as an emotional conductor just out of camera's view. This I found very effective. Many directors go to the back of the room and watch a monitor during every take. Crowe would do that, too, but on several occasions I saw him leap from his seat like a giddy youngster and head right back over to the actors. He really loves the process. It's quite apparent. After it all, I approached him and told him it was the best class I've had in years. I believe his reaction was "wow." Anyway, glad to know that he's doing an original story again(his strong suit) On another sad note. I had a copy of a book about Crowe that was a promo item when ALMOST FAMOUS came out. It perished by an open window in the recent L.A. rains. poosticks.

This 'story' is not even worth putting up...

    by sk909

I agree that Crowe is way overrated, but not because of Vanilla Sky. I think Almost Famous is glossy shit. Vanilla Sky is really good glossy shit. It's a turd that's frozen AND THEN polished. But who cares about my opinion, what the fuck is up with this 'story'? Seriously, if nobody else thinks so, I'll quietly exit and stick to CHUD's message boards, but does ANYONE else think this site is total bullshit since ROTK? This non-scoop is a perfect example of trying to pull the wool over our eyes. All the recent bits have been about nothing. Does anyone agree? Anyone else thinking of organizing a mass exit if the quality doesn't improve?

Just like those last 2 guys said: Vanilla sky was a great film... I mean, in my opinion, of course. I'm chuffed to hear he's finally got a new project going on. I haven't heard fuck-all about it, so it was nice to get a general idea; ie. thank the stars he got rid of Kutcher. If it wasn't for Kirsten Dunst, I'd say James (?) Franco is the guy for the lead. Otherwise, my vote is for Casey Affleck. No, I mean really. Out.

    The Kutcher rumors are false.

    by ribbons

I know a lot of people would probably like to "punk" him right now, or to see him punked (That's why people who normally have common sense are hoping against hope that Demi Moore is playing a joke on him), but scheduling conflicts were apparently what drove him away from Elizabethtown. Now, that may be a lie as well, but since it's not exactly too crazy to have been concocted by a bored college student, and we're talking about the Internet here, and I have no idea from where this other "info" came from (both Crowe's and Kutcher's agents deny the story), the PR release is the more credible one. Franco is a much better actor, but don't buy into the news that Crowe went "badass" and "punk'd" the "little bastard." Seriously, don't you think it would've been all over ET by now?

  • Howdy, everyone. My name's Scott, and I'm yet another amateur film critic operating out of Dallas on the internet. I've finally corralled a section of a friend's webpage to post my online reviews (which are sent out to people on my mailing list; Heretofor, I was too lazy to set up a website, someone offered to give me the space), and I'm sending out word to all my fellow film geeks: Please stop by and read some of my stuff! We writers need ample feedback, and I figure my fellow bitter, cynical film geeks are the best people to ask for support! The friend who set up the pseudo-page for me is the director of FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS, which is a student-film/comedy set in an unnamed college, which you can find at friendswithbenefits.com. It's a pretty entertaining little flick, so feel free to check that out after reading some of my reviews! The address is http://fwb.proboards18.com, and my stuff is under "The Doctor's..." If you don't have time, don't worry about it. Just trying to spread the word. I have faith in you, fellow film geeks. Thanks! Dr.Scott

Vanilla Sky Was Good, But An Acquired Taste

    by barron34

It was a good movie nonetheless. I am a fan of most of Crowe's films (excepting JERRY MACGUIRE, which was a little too mainstream for my taste). I especially love ALMOST FAMOUS, a little gem of a movie from the end of the 90's. So, Crowe is good, and I always look forward to seeing his films.

    by lino

    ...the ending sucked. Period.

It was a great movie but the ending was slapped together like a kindergartner's cut-n-paste project. Yay, it was all a dream. What a copout ending and a shitty way to end your movie. -Lino-

    by st.buggering

At that moment, he magically transformed into a complete moron whose thoughts I do not care to hear. It also didn't help that he submitted a "scoop" that contains no information whatsoever. Is this all it takes now? I guess I could write in claiming I've read the script to the new Batman movie, offer no proof, insult "Memento", and see my name up there too.
