New Shot from VAN HELSING' + The One Sheet Appears Online!

Published at:  Dec 20, 2003 8:03:02 PM CST

Here's The One-Sheet!

Hey folks, Harry here... A reader named Marcus sent in the following shot of Hugh Jackman from VAN HELSING... I don't think I've seen it online before, and I've been surfing around trying to find it, to no avail... It might just be that it's essentially the same shot/pose we've seen a zillion times before to promote stuff like CROW, UNDERWORLD and on and on and on... Looks nice, but frankly, I really want to see the trailer for this sucker. I hear they plan to hold it for a SUPER BOWL reveal, which should be packed with other jewels as well. Anyway gals... begin drooling... Saffy... both on hands on the keyboard please!

Stephen Sommers can't handle these characters. Granted, the Mummy was an action movie and this is obviously in the smae vein, but those vampires look like they've got something to prove. For my money, the scariest vampire to ever grace the screen was the "old Gary Oldman" in the Coppolla flick. That trailer scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

    by godoffireinhell

Which is not necessarily a bad thing because I love VHD to death but the filmmakers really should pay their respect where it is due. I hope they'll at least acknowledge the influence in interviews ... And I'm still not sold on the film itself. Every single piece of artwork that has come out has looked awesomely kick-ass but I simply cannot get over the fact that this will be a friggin PG-13 flick from the same director who raped my soul with his MUMMY flicks. If it'd come from anyone else I'd already be exstatic about seeing this but with Sommers at the helm I'll wait for the trailer and make my mind up then. For now, consider me cautiously optimistic.

    Jackman Needs Better Representation...

    by barron34

...and better projects. I like Jackman and think that he could be a good leading actor and major movie star, but he keeps getting involved in half-baked projects that are going to kill any chance he has of getting into the big leagues with the Tom Cruises and Russell Crowes (and he DOES have that potential, in my opinion). He needs to be in solid genre pictures, mainstream action-adventure, drama, whatever. He needs to work with the ABSOLUTE BEST directors and co-stars. DEMAND THE BEST, NOT THE OLD, THE SECOND-TIER, THE HACKNEYED, THE PLAYED OUT. I know the guy likes Broadway and musicals and such, but save playing Peter Allen AFTER you've established yourself as a major star. Crap like that can kill any chance you have to be a major star. Nobody but Gay guys and Broadway fans want to see that stuff. It retards any movie career. It's a distraction at best. Kate and Leopold was a fucked project. No offense, Meg Ryan is still cute, but she is honestly on the downslope of her career. Jackman needs to be cast opposite the current crop of hot young actresses, not the big stars of yesterday. Kate and Leopold might have played 10 years ago; nobody wants to see it today; it's a stale idea. Van Helsing sounds good in theory, but it looks rather cheesy in the ways others have pointed out. What's with the weird, anachronistic high-tech weaponry? Is this supposed to be set in the modern age, or is this supposed to pseudo-historical? It looks like hack-work. I hope that Jackman doesn't fall into Mark Hamill-dom,, as another poster pointed out. Jackman has the rare potential to be a major star, in my opinion. He needs to start making better career moves, demand to work with the best directors and hottest co-stars, and not get involved in anything that seems hackneyed and unoriginal. Better scripts, better projects. Anyway, I wish him luck, and hope that he and his reps get their act together there is a lot of potential there that seems to be unused and undeveloped.

    Van Helsing's Cool Look

    by profgriffin

First of all, on the topic of the LOOK of Van Helsing himself...

I actually DO NOT instantly think of Edward Van Sloan (1931) when I think of
the famous vampire hunter. Van Sloan's Van Helsing was strong, and
determined, and it was his KNOWLEDGE that guided the others in their
quest to destroy evil. He was methodical and studious and was guided
    by a greater good.

As powerful and classic as his interpretation
was, it's Peter Cushing that leaps to mind for me. Swashbuckling,
dashing...his London Fog coat flowing behind him as he chases Count
Dracula. That's Van Helsing to me, and in that sense, Hugh Jackman
    is perfect.

However, I do hope that they do not neglect to grant Van Helsing his greatest
weapon. His FAITH. He is the ultimate force of good and warrior of
God. I mean, let's be honest, Dracula is evil and to combat evil, you
need a power of good. There was majesty and sacred reverence to Van
Helsing as he destroyed "shells, possessed and corrupted by the evil
    of Dracula"

His religious zeal almost bordered on fanaticism and that's what
makes him interesting. He is NOT Indiana Jones, and he is not a
bitter revenge filled fighter of demonic powers...he is our last
hope. A man given the power and knowledge by the grace of God to
stand-alone against overwhelming evil. THAT'S Van Helsing. There is
a trend to remove belief systems and religious orientations when
    making

Why is anyone even DOUBTING the financial prospects for this?

    by commando cody

I really don't see why anyone's bitching about this one. First off, how can you "tell" if it's going to be good or bad based around the relatively FEW stills that have even been released so far? Before pronouncing judgment, at least wait till we see SOME footage (ideally, a trailer during the Super Bowl.) Secondly, on paper this looks golden anyway. You have Hugh Jackman who has already made himself a geek favorite through Wolverine and you have Kate Beckingsdale who is a total hottie and you have not one... not two... but THREE core Universal monsters tossed in, making younger kids go ape shit. Plus, Stephen Sommers has proved he can make mainstream crowd pleasers with the MUMMY movies. So all the elements are in place on the creative end. Then on the BUSINESS end you have Universal handling it, a major studio making it a tentpole summer flick, so you know it'll have wide distribution, there'll be plenty of prints flooding the theaters, it has a prime early opening date ala MUMMY RETURNS so crowds will see it simply to get out of the house and start the summer movie season. Bottom line, it'll probably open big and go on to make a solid $150 million, maybe even get up to 175 or cross $200 in the US if it turns out to be a shit cool adventure movie with enough "eye candy" onscreen to make people come back for seconds. So take that money and calculate that it'll probably do THAT over again worldwide (if not a slight bit more), thus raising it's world wide box office to at least $400 million. Toss in eventual DVDs sales (figure $15 on sale, moving at least 10 million units) and you're loooking at ANOTHER $150 million in the kitty. So all told, this thing is looking at probably a HALF BILLION DOLLAR RETURN to start (and that doesn't even begin to tabulate any side licensing deals -- like toys -- that a property like this is clearly going to have.) So I'll predict this: barring an asteriod hitting the Earth and destroying all our multiplexes, this thing is ALREADY money in the bank. So quit harping about it before you've seen it or saying Jackman was wrong to do it, or he needs better representation. Most actors should be so lucky to land a potential franchise like this one has the chance to be. So quit whining and just enjoy it for the fun it'll probably be. Will it be high cinematic art and THE GODFATHER? No. But will it probably be a fun summer popcorn flick to get out of the heat and enjoy an old style monster movie with tons of actions and cool shit plastered all over the screen? Hell yeah -- I'm counting on it! Bring it on, Hugh!!!
