M Night's THE VILLAGE trailer...

Published at:  Dec 20, 2003 3:44:33 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... below is a link to the first teaser trailer for M. Night's THE VILLAGE trailer. Every trailer he has ever had for a film has instantly grabbed me. Instantly told me that I was going to be seeing the movie. Told me that in fact... I HAD to see the movie. This time, the only thing telling me to see the movie is my faith in M. Night as a filmmaker, but not in what I'm seeing. The script reviews have not been good. Matter of fact, they've been abysmal. I have deliberately not read them, but from conversations with Moriarty, he not only agrees with the consensus that the script sucks, but believes it so bad that it can not possibly be real. After watching the teaser I'm afraid that this film may not be as the other films have been for me. I am not jazzed or pumped after the trailer. BUT... I am just hoping that perhaps this isn't an easy thing to sell... that perhaps it is just not as instantly iconic as his previous ideas. I hope... well, I want to love this film like I have his others, but this isn't looking too promising.

Small world! I dunno - the trailer didn't give me enough to form much of an opinion either way. If M Night is able to create a level of fear and unease with whatever "creatures" lie in those woods anywhere near what he managed in Signs, it could at least end up being a pretty rousing frightfest if nothing else. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until I've got compelling evidence to the contrary.

For everyone not giving this the time of day, I only wonder why. I would guess the majority of people who come to this site enjoy Night's films. I have. Especially Unbreakable. This movie looks decent. The cinematography is gorgeous. The slow pan under the trees, the mist gathering around the village. It all looks great. Indeed, the script may be a steaming pile of crap, but I'll wager my bet on Night.

    by rupee88

M Night was a one trick pony with "The Sixth Sense". "Unbreakable" was OK, but far from good. This movie looks lame and it probably will be lame. I hate that they changed the name of it too. "The Village" doesn't work nearly as well as "The Woods". It's about what it is the damn woods...but I think there's another movie with that name, so I guess they had to change it, but still it's lame.

    by gollum38

    ...this trailer rocks.

I love you Harry, and I love your site, however, I feel like I have to spout off about something for a minute.

I am sick of people making up their minds based on what others have said about scripts or whatever. Who cares if the early draft scripts were "abysmal"? Shyamalan has proven he can spin a good yarn, especially behind a camera, so please quit starting the negative hype, Harry, just based on what you have heard other people say about early drafts of the script and what you see in this teaser. First of all, who cares what they say about the script, make up your own mind when you read it yourself. Second of all, it was early drafts those people were talking about (likely before a lot of character depth, etc, had been fleshed out). Third of all...what the hell are you talking about when you say the teaser doesn't excite you??? This teaser gives just enough away to know it's a monster movie (a sub-genre every geek reading this site appreciates) by a proven film-genius (arguably). I for one can't wait to see this movie. I can wait, however, for the negative hype machine to progress with Harry at the helm (just like it will inevitably progress with Alien Vs Predator, because Harry hates P.Anderson so much - ignoring the fact that he has the potential to make a really exciting movie). My point is...judge it for yourself when you actually have something concrete to judge and in the meantime, enjoy this teaser, because it's not that bad.

M Night has pretty obviously used some of the utopian religious communities of the mid 1800's as his template here, right down to the hooded capes that come across as almost anachronistic. But where does he GO with it? Unless somebody gets arrested for refusing to shave his beard or something.

And this is a definite must-see for me. The trailer worked as far as I am concerned. The production design looks great and it was very creepy. This looks good. I must also say that I liked Signs a lot. It surprises me that so many people don't like it. It's terrific filmmaking much more satisfying then the ultra-loud, CGI'd to death stuff crap that is being made.

The dumb ass "secret" is that this isolated village isn't really in the late 1880's. It's in modern times and these mysterious "creatures" are construction equipment. The red marks on the doors are notes for the construction workers to show which buildings need to come down. They are building a mall or something. Ooooh. Ahhhh. Ooooooh.

Seriously, think about it. This could be a serious dramatization about the town of Nilbog, before the creatures (i.e. the goblins) took over the town. But admit it guys, if anyone can use fear to make you forget how stupid a movie is (i.e. Signs, and all that water and door knob malarky), its M. Nigh. I just think it should be retooled, and retitled Troll 2: Chapter Zero "The Secret of Nilbog." Could definitely be alot of fun.

Will Night put himself in this one?

    by renata

Maybe as an Indian sharecropper. M. Night should have quit after SIGNS, when the "signs" (pun intended) of creative fatigue was really showing. That movie only worked for me because the kids were so funny, but it was about as scary and thrilling as an episode of AMERICAN IDOL. Every director needs fresh challenges. Spielberg took it with 1941. He bombed, alright, and needed Lucas to save his career, but he didn't keep repeating himself. Ditto Scorsese with ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE after MEAN STREETS. Night's been pidgeonholed, which makes LIFE OF PI perhaps a good new start. And, if anyone's curious about the twist ending, its type was done as an episode of the original TWILIGHT ZONE many, many times. Think about it.

The only good things I have to say about his movies is that they aren't the typical hollywood shit and that Signs was funny even though it was a complete ripoff of War of the Worlds. I have yet to be suprised or impressed by this man's work to date. He is probably the most overrated director since Spielburg. by movienutz

M.Night Shamalama-dingdong has got to be the most overrated director of all time.

"I see Dead People" - no, I saw a dumb-ass predictable boring movie.

"Unbreakable" another slow, plodding film about "Action-comic-book characters".

"Signs" - another boring, plodding film although riddled with illogic.

He even admits that he never had interest in film until he got accepted into film school - not due to his experience - due to his race.

In today's world, George Lucas would never have been accepted into USC Film School, and Spielberg would have been arrested for tresspassing on the Universal Lot.

M.Night Shamalama-dingdong is an overrated hack.

If it is anything like Signs - it will suck.

    by kraaken

Although signs had a few genuine thrills. Shyamalan obviously has been spared the gift of realistic characterization.
When a little kid says, in deadpan fashion, "Theres a monster outside, can I have adrink of water?", I must ask myself if that kid is an alien herself. No child on this earth would say that...ever. Stupid dialog beyond belief. And yet that is the bit they kept showing in th etrailer as well!!!
I wanted to say "Are you people fucking stupid?"
    Obviously they were.
If this new movie has any of that kind of bullshit dialog, I will rapidly move Shyamalon way down my list of must-see directors.
I loved The Sixth Sense, though. That shows me there is potential here with this guys.
He obviously take the directorial stance that the audience will be more scared by what they don't see than what they do see. So I would not expect to see the creatures until very late in the film.

M Night is the most over rated director next to Spielberg (I think that's already been said). He thinks he is Hitchcock. I mean with all his cameo's like Hitchcock. And did you see the opening credits for signs?! *cough* Hitchcock *cough* *cough* rip off *cough*. Signs was terrible. I was really looking forward to it till I saw it. Sheesh. Not one bit of it was worth my time. I think I'm the only one who HATED The Sixth Sense. I mean it was retarded. The "Twist" was soooo obvious, that I refuse to belive that anyone who has seen as many movies as the general movie buff has, didn't see this end coming. Unbreakable could have been could. The idea had me excited but M Night did nothing with it. This trailer actually dosen't look to bad, and I probaly WILL see this movie. Though I fully expect it to suck. Along with all M Night's other films. M Night is deep for your common man, but not for any one who knows the joys of film. O, and I predict that in "the Village" there will be a scence at the end where M Night walks past walking his pet poodle (Key the Hithcock theme music). Ow, and lastly if that ass up there that posted the Spoiler. If that is REALLY what happens you are an evil piece of shit, and I hope you die in your sleep (Despite the fact that we all woulda guessed it 30 mins before they reveal it).

JS: Don't you think that twist is a bit obvious?

    by prof. pop-cult

I'm undecided as to whether I want to see this one, especially after the so-so-ness of "Signs". M. Night (I can never spell out his last name right) is a fascinating director, but I agree that he's been doing the same thing over and over again. I look forward to his "Life of Pi" -- because he needs to get out of this twist end/moody atmosphere theme, and grow as an artist, and I believe he can do it. As for the twist end "spoiler" that JS posted above: Maybe he's just joking, people, and a very good writer. Or not. But there does seem to be an unsettling tinge of truth to it, and it does feel like the sort of twist end you'd get from a classic "Twilight Zone" episode. It explains easily the purpose of the whole zoned-off area where the humans must stay within, and the setting and humans' culture (and their very Amishy look) appear very much like opportune means to heavy-handedly explore the concept of God, the Devil, demons, etc.. Thus, "The Village" could be a continuation of the themes that M. Night was playing with in "Signs". This "spoiler" also would tie in with the other poster above who claims to have read the script and said the last third of it becomes outlandish (or whatever words he used to describe it, I forget). I don't know what to make of this. (I'm already imagining that it's only the children who are allowed to live, and the red marks signify who is to be slaughtered for meat -- maybe this speculation, I emphasize SPECULATION, will subject me to being banned. :( ) I don't know which is more unsettling -- the possible themes that this movie might explore, or that someone here may have totally spoiled it already. Maybe we'll know the truth, if JS' spoiler gets deleted within the next day or so. Hmmm.

I don't know; I wouldn't say 'Unbreakable' is a classic, although most "cult" classics aren't, anyway. I like it, and I used to embrace it feverishly and shake my head every time Night said it was too dour and pretentious as if he was repeating to himself, mantralike, a lie that the audience fed to him, and that OF COURSE a man entering a midlife crisis who feels like he doesn't know who he is or why he is is supposed to have a dour and pretentious life. But I'm beginning to understand where he sees the blemishes. A lot of the dialogue and behavior seems like it's a forced sort of awakening, although I guess there aren't many other ways they could have done it. I do think that the scene where the kid almost shoots David gets a bad rap, and I do like it (except for the 'Based On A True Story' bio trivia at the end), but 'Sixth Sense' is the most highly-regarded one for a reason. That movie had problems of its own, but it worked the best.

I'm looking forward to 'The Life of Pi,' as well; it would be a good chance to see Shyamalan test out his "formula" for mainstream audience approval without fantastical revelations to propel the story forward and a twit's (oops...I mean twist) ending, which I'd really like to see him retire. I know that it worked well for both 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Unbreakable,' but they weren't really twists in that they came naturally out of the story. Ummm... the possible twist ending of the village really being a community of people living in the past while the outside world is encroaching upon them, hence the "red" for danger and "yellow" for safety, that people have suggested, makes me kind of mad (people who don't want the movie possibly spoiled for them should not read the previous sentence). If it does good bank but is in fact poorly-conceived, Disney will think that it's okay to give people a story that doesn't mean anything worth two shits as long as it's curious enough to pique and maintain curiosity throughout and has a "twist" that everybody, after hearing about if from either their friends or David Manning, goes to see in order to prove to themselves they can figure it out first or spot the clues. I will see it because I think that Shyamalan's earned my respect as a filmmaker, but I'm hoping it's not the start of another insidious marketing ploy by one of the most insidious companies in showbiz. But yeah, 'Life of Pi' should be good. It was a good book, and if he feels strongly enough about it to actually leave his fingerprints all over it without putting "throwing in some twists and stuff," then it might just restore Harry's faith in the guy. ********** By the way, the trailer in itself does not look bad, but knowing what people have presciently suggested about it, I do cringe a little at the sight of yellow and red. Spray paint, anyone?

Ok, I'll give props to Night for trying to do something different with Unbreakable. It didn't work, but at least he tried. Signs, on the other hand, was pure shit from the script to what ended up on screen...FULL of plot holes and really bad dialogue. by bullet_time

Anyone who doesn't by now see that the twist is the whole constuction worker thing is really stupid.......................................................................................................................

    - The red slashes: I've lived in the city long enough to know what a slash on a door means. Demolition. Also, could those things be ANY more obviously spray painted? Sure, THEY don't know what spray paint looks like but I hope you do.........................................................................................................

    - The yellow as a "good" color. What color do construction workers wear? That's right...yellow. It's to confuse the workers........................................................................................................................................ Finally during the very last part of the trailer where the tagline comes up, you can hear obvious MACHINERY SOUNDS IN THE BACKGROUND. Duhhhh. This movie will be shit. End of story.

    by sexybeast

It is hard for Sci-Fi fans to not getting into the nerd convention nit picking, but when you watch signs you have to forget about the Plot Holes and just enjoy the movie. It isn't a sci-fi movie about aliens. Its a movie about a family in the mid west who re discover their faith. The aliens are just a palatable way for M Night to deliver his movie to people like the ones on AICN.

    by cineman

SPOILERS AHEAD although it has already been said many times before. The creatures are just modern civilization (i.e. BULLDOZERS!!) coming in to wreck this quaint little town. While I admit the idea is clever, it is also so clever to the point of just being stupid. But that is the ending as of now unless it is changed but it obviously won't be because M. Night has too much clout at this point. For tose of you who know the ending the trailer practically screams it out. Red spray paint on the doors? The yellow flags? Come on! William Hurt's line about the village being "untouched?" If you listen closely at the end of the trailer, after the title card and bit with Joaquin walking in the woods, you can actually hear a bulldozer sound effect, I shit you not! Listen!

    by twatto

    ** MILD SPOILERS **

I hate to break it to you Ribbons, but there is a twist at the end of 'Life of Pi'. It may not be as spelled out or concrete like the twists of M.Night's other films, but I would still call it a twist. Basically, the author presents two possible versions of what happened, but then leaves it to the reader to determine which one actually took place, based on his/her own personal convinctions. The ending is very loosely tied, and in any other book would have left me unfulfilled. But since the author reiterates throughout the idea of faith and belief in God, the ending actually made sense. As for that story having "mainstream" appeal, I just don't see it. Think about it. It's about a 16 year-old Indian boy's relationship with God told through journey across the Pacific Ocean in a life boat with some zoo animals on board. Don't get me wrong, it's an damn good, uplifting book, but I envision plenty of "mainstream" moviegoers walking out of the theatre saying to themselves, "What the hell was that?" Of course that all depends on how true M.Night will stay to the story.

First of all who said it was the real script. Half of the time people who have nothing better to do make up scripts so people will go to their website. M Night is an excellent director and he doesn't make shit. Wake until the friggin movie comes out before you start smashing it. Anyway, who reads a script review from a website called "aint it cool news?" I like this website just like all of you but stop bashing a movie you know nothing about! Thanks my opinion on this and I personally cannot wait to see "The Village." by spyguy

Okay, I quite enjoyed THE SIXTH SENSE, even if I did figure out "The Twist," which earned me considerable scorn from my wife and our friends. I also enjoyed UNBREAKABLE, which I personally feel is a highly-underrated movie only because people don't want to feel like they were "tricked" into watching a comic book film disguised as a thriller. SIGNS, meanwhile, was great...for the first two-thirds. Then it abruptly starts sucking and you know the exact spot...when the alien is suddenly in full view and is threatening to kill the kid. All the suspense is flushed right down the toilet along with every bit of credibility the film had until that point. And now, THE VILLAGE...which will indeed be lame if that "construction crews are the monsters" premise comes to pass. M...M, M, M...Please do us all a favor and direct a SILVER SURFER, DOCTOR STRANGE, or SPECTRE movie instead of these pseudo-TWILIGHT ZONE/HITCHCOCK projects. Comic book movies need more capable directors than just Sam Raimi, Bryan Singer and Christopher Nolan, so channel your talents into something positive for a change...

    M. Night is a kickass director and writer. Take a look at Signs. Oh yeah, a lot of you bash it, but just take a fucking look at it as a movie! There wasn't a scene in there that didn't advance the story or the characters, something that a lot of the recycled Hollywood shit these days forgoes in the name of action and comic relief. Some of the camera shots and timing in Signs were just incredible. The whole fucking theater jumped when the alien walked by in the home video on the news. It was just an alien walking by, but Shamalan timed it PERFECTLY to get the desired reaction. Also, the scene in the end when we see the alien reflected in the TV screen was a real jump for the audience, when, if you think about it, it shouldn't have been, but Shamalan got another great reaction. He also used special effects ONLY WHEN NECCESSARY. There's something that Hollywood should learn. Shamalan focuses on STORY, on CHARACTERS, on SUBSTANCE. Generally, the rest of Hollywood doesn't give a bloody shit. They just crank out recycled garbage to pump you for cash. Shamalan actually cares about making a good movie.

I suppose I could see how a lot of cult movie fans would like it. Unbreakable was good. A lot of cult fans loved it. Come on, it was about comic books! The pimply faced fanboys livin' in their mama's basement went to see it in droves! Signs was good, but a lot of the cult fanboys didn't like it, probably because it was Shamalan's first really mass-marketed movie, and thus they couldn't give it cult status. Fuck that. You guys must expect a certain formula or something. Signs was an excellent example of good writing and even better directing. See my above post. You Signs bashers must have your dicks in a bowl of cashews, cuz you're fucking nuts.

    Creature Corner Review

    by charles martel

I just went back and re-read the Creature Corner Review, in which something about black boxes in everyone's house is mentioned. Could this be a purposefully isolated community under some univeristy study? The black boxes could be like those nature boxes that are camoflaged to record the activities of animals. I mean, it seems pretty clear that one of the 3 twists is that they are surrounded by modernity. But the establishment of the boundaries of the village, etc., would seem to me to indicate it was, at some point, set up like this. Especially when the people all hide underground when the bell is rung (like the Eloi). Just an idea.

It was well-marketed, it had the suspenseful trailer that happened to draw in $60+ million opening weekend (you didn't see it? You must be too cool to be at this site!), and it had great pacing and character development throughout the movie. You complain about the ending, and I totally understand, I thought the ending was a letdown as well. But M. Night made a masterfully directed movie up to that point. You jumped when you should have, and you wanted to know more of what was really going on as the story unfolded. So yeah, bash the movie all you want. I'll stick with entertaining movies like Signs any day over the next Mask sequel. Oh yeah, and if you don't like what he does, make an oath right now to never see any of his movies again. Unbreakable > Signs > 6th sense

    by vizzini

I think he is an great director, his stories though, particularly with signs, just lack reality and logic sometimes. I also think he tends to insult the intelligence of the viewer a lot, like "isn't this amazing" "wow look at this, bet you didn't see this coming." I worked out sixth sense early, and when you do, its just a dull monotonous film. The dialogue was BEYOND monotonous.

"every line is so meaninglful, and im going to say it as if im holding back from crying or juddering my lip, of wailing in despair"

The lightheartedness of signs in points really brightened up the film, he is getting better in this sense.

He is a fucking excellent suspense and shock director, you CANNOT argue that. Signs made me jump a lot.

We're capable of many advanced things, such as driving cars for great distances (cars that we pilot yet didn't invent; our species did), but if a door is bolted, boarded up and barricaded with heavy furniture, I imagine it would take us a couple of tries to open it. As for the water thing, I'm afraid you're going to have to get over it. Much worse movies have much greater plot holes that do much less to service the story and the world never seems to stop upon their notice.

I've been trying for the past 3 days to get this fucking trailer to play, an effort which will no doubt end up being inversely proportional to the charge I will get out of the teaser. I mean, Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were solid films, but Signs was on the lame side thanks to its huge plot holes. The alien on the video was scary, though.

    All Right You Smack Monkeys

Ok I am waiting for the trailer to dowlonad and I was just checking out the posts. Ok so here is my Beef.

    1. the 6th sense...totally awesome movie...maybe it's not groundbreaking...but it was good...

    2. Unbreakable...figured it out in like 15 minutes...still a totally great movie...only reason some of you "critics" like it is because it's about comics...big freaking deal...I loved it because of Samuel L Jackson...

    3. Signs...I am still having trouble deciding if signs or 6th sense was better...it was so great...there are aliens in it...but it's not an alien movie...granted Mel is slipping a little but it was about a man struggles andhow he copes with them...and bout that stuff about the kids...you know they had lost their mother...their wierdness is attributed to that...I lost a parent in a wierd freak accident and it does affect your behavior...I felt that their roles were written and acted out well...not perfect but well written

Ok so my point stated...not that it matters what a few people think and you guys that have read the "script" that all of you have your hands on but only talk about the stuff that is shown in the trailer...cause it dosent matter...there are some pretty basic almost crap stories out there that when they are put into movies with the right director can be really amazing movies...take fight club and seven...fincher made those movies great...come on seven was another serial killer story...woo hoo...right...wrong it was a great film...unbreakable a film about some guy that is a little too serious with his comics...but you guys still ove it right...so can it till the village comes out

    Maybe it's a zoo?

    by catfor6

I don't see the construction workers as monsters thing here. I see a bunch of humans kidnapped by a long time ago by aliens and set up in a zoo that recreates the Earth. The alien families bring their little alien kids to the zoo to see the strange Earth animals who have no idea they are in a zoo and stay in this small little area for some reason. Anyway, that could be kind of cool. Maybe I'm just nuts.
