FIREFLY's_Whedon, Minear, Edlund & More Do It Live!!

Published at:  Dec 19, 2003 11:57:34 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

So many sci-fi geeks are situated in Los Angeles we actually have to have sci-fi conventions here at least once a month. The December edition of The Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention happens this Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Shrine Auditorium Expo Center, 700 West 32nd St. in Los Angeles.

And Joss Whedon, who created “Firefly,” “Angel” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” is going to be there at 1 p.m. to flog his absurdly hilarious, moving and life-affirming “Firefly” DVD.

Aaaaaand … he’s bringing two of the other greatest writer-producer-directors of all time, Tim Minear and Ben Edlund, with him!!

Aaaaaand … he’s bringing most of the “Firefly” regulars, including Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Ron Glass, Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres, with him!!

Yikes!! Find more details here.

Maybe they’ll drop some hints about that new “Firefly” movie they’re planning to shoot for Universal early next year! (Our most reliable sources, by the way, suggest that rumors of the movie being “grounded” or “delayed” are way way way wrong; “Firefly,” at least for the moment, continues to move forward toward the certain glory of its motion picture rebirth!)

Lung fluid buildup permitting, I’ll see you there. No power in the ‘verse …

I am – Hercules!!

    Quality on TV

    by skitch

Just watched the pilot of Firefly on the DVD set and I was most impressed. I missed it when it aired as Fox triumphantly scheduled it on one of the 2 barren wastelands of TV--Fri (the other being Sat)...it's really sad when shows that have so much heart, class and intellect are tossed out like garbage and reality shows prevail...the nation's imagination and creativity aren't being challenged but they don't seem to care...have we become that complacent?...I suppose the viewing audience gets what it deserves...hopefully, shows like Angel, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sopranos and the like will show the TV execs that there is a market for exceptional programming all the time...but I won't hold my breath

    Firefly: BEST SHOW EVER. Period.

    by serious black

I just watched the pilot for the first time on my new, spiffy Firefly DVD box set. It was awesome. It's really weird how much I love this show, but I do. It's been about a year since I last saw it on TV, but I still think about it often. This story MUST continue which is why I'm so excited about the prospect of a feature film. Maybe we'll get to see some hardcore Reaver action. In a way, though, I really just want the TV show back. On the bottom of the box set are the words "The Complete Series." I can't express my frustration at reading that. 17 episodes? It's not nearly enough. But if Firefly does fly again it has to have the same captain and crew. Those actors are simply amazing.
    Take care, Herc.

I agree. I love this show alot too. The best sci-fi Tv in a loooong time. I don't dig every episode, but 90% of them are awesome and just plain fun. The characters are likable, the women are hot, ( The woman from "our ms Reynolds and trash......DAAAAAMNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!....SHE COULD SEDUCE THE CELL PHONE OUT OF A THEATRE PATRON!!!
I hope for the best as far as a movie with the original cast...and I hope even more for said movie to be so succesful, that the show comes back on a station who will support it....Fox!!!!! you are truly idiots.

And I blame it all on the fact that they didn't invent high-powered, indoor lighting for motion picture production fast enough. (Thomas Edison you jackass!) If they had, the silent film industry would never had moved out to California and cool things like this would be happening within easy access for me. ;) Anyways, sounds like a great time for those lucky enough to go. Please convey best wishes from those of us who can't. And let's hope that Joss has an announcement for us that will make one great holiday present.

Firefly is the best hour-long TV show ever (can't really compare hour-long dramas to half-hour comedies, too many differences)... it's a damn shame this show couldn't stick. I'm really hoping they're announcing a movie...

    by randyzimm

Just finished the DVD's last night. They really make you want to curse the gorrum Fox Network evecs for their short sightedness! Some of the best television I've EVER seen, and it better now that when I first watched! I'm looking for more copies of the DVD to give out as presents. Bravo to all the Firefly folks, they certainly got shafted out of an opportunity of being in a huge hit series. I can't wait to see it return in whatever form.

Also, Adam Baldwin is pretty funny.

    by recognizer

To be precise, BTO, the show leaned on Adam Baldwin's comedy talents, which are considerable. It's not much to say that a show is funnier than "Voyager", has better acting than "Babylon 5", and better special effects than "Blake's Seven", but Firefly didn't have any big fucking holes in its likeability like most Sci-Fi television does. Also, it's really damn good. And stop calling yourself anything to do with Bruce Timm. The man is an excellent writer. You're, as stated, a retarded c*nt.

    by simongarth2001

If you have not actually sit down and WATCHED the complete series on dvd, in the actual order they were MEANT to play in, then don't even give us your opinions, because they mean SQUAT. This is QUALITY stuff.I am sure, if given another season, Firefly would be the show to watch and would have already been made into a film of some sort. My favorite episodes being, "out of gas", "war stories", "objects in space", "shindig", "our Mrs. Reynolds", and the first two parter. a great CAST. intelligently written, fun....what more do you want?

To BTO: You're a pussy. FACT.

    by magilla gorilla

There are areas to make legitimate criticisms of any TV show, but you're criticism that the Firefly actors have no talent is utter bullshit. The acting in Firefly, unlike many other sci-fi dramas, is the one area where the show was dead solid perfect right from the start. Which leads me to conclude that either you're a moron who is not able to recognize quality acting or that you have an agenda against the show. If you do have an agenda, such as you're one of those Farscape fans who is unable to appreciate TWO different sci-fi series, you should be upfront about it and not hide behind absurd assertions about a show that you obviously no nothing about. That makes you a pussy. I suppose it's possible that you're just looking to get a rise out of people, in which case I took the bait. But only pussies go looking for trouble in an internet forum, where they think they're safe from bodily harm. Either own up to why you really don't like the show, offer some VALID critiques, or shut the fuck up.

    Saw it again last night...

    by cap'n chaos!

I got my friend to watch it and he ended up going through the entire series in one night. Not too shabby, I figure. I love this show. And I want to gorrum know what happens next! This is even more frustrating than Farscape. At least, aside from that last five minutes, they'd managed to wrap up a lot of plot lines in the final episode. Firefly didn't even GET a final episode. Sure Objects in Space is one of the series' finest hours, but it doesn't provide ANY kind of resolution.

I've read the Cinescape article (and the excellent Cinefantastique series) and I'd say Joss sounds more guarded than pessimistic regarding the possibility of a Firefly movie. If he's working as hard at a script as he says he is, it's a matter of laying low until the deals get finalized. I can wait.

    by dyslexicheart

This would be very sweet news if there is an announcement of the motion picture happening, especially after Joss had downplayed that talk recently in interviews. And Morena Baccarin had the part of Eve on "Angel" written for her but she was too busy with Marti Noxon's wonderful mid-season replacement series for Fox - "Still Life". I hate the fact that I have to wait for Christmas eve to watch the Firefly DVD my mom bought for me. It's sitting under the tree but those damn holiday rules.

    by dyslexicheart

Thank you Herc, I had forgotten about "Wonderfalls", that should be television. I wonder where FOX plans on scheduling the show? I've seen the pilot for "Still Life" and thought it was great and would fit well with "The O.C." on Wednesdays, but maybe "Wonderfalls" can do well there too. I just hope neither show gets banished to Thursday or Friday.

Great for Joss! Only one problem - he DID give us something else to obsess over - and Fox screwed us.

Great to see some props from a national source though. :) Wow, just look at some of the people he ranks better than. Impressive. Congrats Joss!

    by gypsytrobot

Watched the gag reel but still have 2 eps left to go, I'm trying to hold off on them. It's like holding off on the last two good candies in a box of chocolates. Thank you Joss, and once again I hate everyone who lives in LA and gets to go to these things. +++ I'm pretty goddamn nitpicky and the only criticisms I can make as far as acting in Firefly is that their Westernisms and Chinese swearing didn't always come off with confidence. The Russian (?)accents weren't too hot either, they could have used a dialect coach. Other than that, the acting was pretty decent. +++ The commentary with Jane Espenson, Inara and the costume designer is great - 3 girls giggling in the sound booth about dresses and whore academy. +++ Did I mention naked man butt? Yep. Naked man butt for them's as likes it. Go now, pester your local Borders' peons mercilessly until they dig out that last copy for you.

So, I got here late, see that everyone is bitching about BTO (a tool, to be sure), but what's the dealio? I guess Herc figured out we hate hearing the BS and banned him from the TB? Who ever said Alec Baldwin wasn't funny is a tool of Satan. He is my second most favorite host of SNL of all time. Always a pee my pants skit on SNL when he's there. And Firefly as a movie will rock my world. Nathan Fillion is great.

    Got the DVD set

    by allykatd

I went and bought myself the Firefly DVD set for christmas because I knew no one else would get it for me. Damn, this is a great show. It's SO frustrating that it's off the air and we'll never know how it all ends. I remember when Sci-Fi channel axed Farscape. I was pissed as hell but comforted myself with thoughts of Firefly. Then THAT was axed. No decent sci-fi shows on TV. None. Enterprise is a joke and boring. All the characters are too much alike. Stargate SG-1 is annoying and not very clever. Firefly characters were all very different, had distinct personalities, flaws and strengths. Jayne kills me and Wash has some of the best lines.
