More CARNIVALE And GALACTICA On The Way!!
Well, SciFi hasn’t yet formally kicked “Battlestar Galactica” over from miniseries to series status, but the miniseries’ Tuesday finale improved on its Monday debut, scoring the channel’s best ratings for 2003, and the third-best ratings in the channel’s history. (If you missed it (as I did), I believe SciFi is repeating all four hours Sunday afternoon.)
Friday morning’s Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, reports that writer-producer Ron Moore’s other high-profile new series, the HBO sci-fi drama “Carnivale,” has been picked up for a 13-episode second season. Production is set to begin in spring for airing late next year.

Toooo bad I don't get free HBO anymore, Carnivale was quite good.
-
...that Ron Moore doesn't succumb to Joss Whedon Overcommitment-and-Burnout Disease.
Producing and writing for even ONE series per year is an incredible time commitment. Two at the same time is risking serious quality dilution.
But that said: between Carnival and the Galactica miniseries, Moore has certainly earned his shot. Let's hope he can keep it up. -

I know its space and it's suppose to be dark but there are too many shadows but it was great FX for a TV show.

Ron Moore should bring the rest of the DS9 writing cast to BSG
by watership_d
Ron goes on about how great the writing experience was on DS9. So why not bring in that team. I'd love to see Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler, Rene Echevarria, Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Peter Allan Fields sitting around writing new BSG episodes.

Horrible mini-series and it's going to suck as a weekly piece of boring nonsense.
The only reason this series did well and scored the third highest ratings for that network is because Sci-Fi only airs a bunch of crap as it is. And this just happened to be a well promoted bunch of crap that they hyped up for MONTHS and slapped the title of a good franchise on to a horrible piece of shit.
F this boring ugly version of Galactica. -
I thought it was an exceptionally good piece of space opera science fiction. Far more emotion and character development than the original series ever had, and a lot of brilliant ideas put into play. A new and very well told story, but with enough touch pieces to the old series to hum with nostalgia for me. By your command.
Here's hoping the series incorporates the old theme song more prominently, that they keep the miniseries cast, and that they don't fall into Gilligan's Island / Voyager / Battlestar Galactica 1978 syndrome, wherein the whole show is premised on the quest to do one thing, but that one thing must never be accomplished because it will kill the show if it is. -
I really enjoyed the mini series, and think the show will really shine when it goes to series. In the mini Moore only had 4 hours. With 22 episodes he can take more time to develop each character.
I hope they get it off the ground soon. I'm craving new adventures, now! -
OMG! HBO must be desperate to be seen as edgy and intelligent.
Sorry, this is Daivd Lynch material without the style. It's simply strange. It's not smart. It's not even interesting.
I'd rather HBO just fill its TV-like Sunday night programming with showings of films like Snow Day. They'd get about the same sized audience.
Either step up and make the investment in true compelling episodic programming or go back to the movies. -
Cue the emergence of old school Galactica whiners, the newest subspecies of troll seen around here.
-
I've heard the controversy...now it's time to see the goods.
But a LOT of the country will just have to wait for the DVD..as I will.
No SCI-FI channel in the boonies...lol -
The article I read today said Carnivale won't return until Feb.2005.It also said the creators promised to make the shows "faster paced".Also, they said Ben & Justin won't meet until season 3 at the earliest.Their meeting is supposed to happen towards the very end of the series, but they did say their "worlds would interact" in season 2.

Look I love sci-fi. New, original, cutting-edgae sci-fi. What this crap is, well, here is just a few examples: Baltar's neural clone causing hallucinations, driving him mad (Farscape's Crichton/Scorpy arc), Frack instead of fuck (Scape's "Frell"), Zoom in and swing shots identical to Babylon 5's digital effects, Computer virus shuts down defense network (Terminator), tough soldier chick pilot has sexual tension with series star (Farscape), Sub-like oldschool instruments witha high-tech glitz (Enterprise)and most of all - the characters name and story premise are ripped off from an old tv show - the details are just tweaked with ideas from other shows and movies. Does Moore have an original idea. Let me answer that...NO. The ratings were huge, so it appears many have gobbled up this dren. I just don't understand when ORIGINAL thinking creates shows like Farscape and Firefly, they are canned despite a consistent and faithful audience (especially with Farscape), but the suits don't see the profit. Are big ratings once better then decent consistent ratings? I don't know but I am sick of this shit.
-
I think the chief concern with "Carnivale" is that there's no singular vision driving the show. The creator is not the showrunner. (Moore was in charge for the first season.) And now Moore says he won't be back for season two. Plus, HBO execs are supposed to be heavily involved creatively. Too many hands in the pie, perhaps? I maintain that a TV show works best when you have a bunch of people trying to realize a singular vision (Joss and "Buffy." Aaron Sorkin and seasons 1-4 of "The West Wing." David Chase and "The Sopranos"). I enjoyed "Carnivale," and I'm glad it will be back. But the best thing I can say about it is there's nothing else like it on TV. The plot still drags ... and drags ... and drags. Most characters are just sketches (including the lead -- Ben Hawkins). I do love Brother Crane, though. Hopefully, HBO will bring a showrunner on board who knows what he's doing and "Carnivale" will find its footing next year.

It did what it's supposed to do. Me and my coworkers talked about it all this week. Boomer is a FEMBOT? WHERE can I buy one?

While I found the BG movie some what badly acted and found the female Starbuck too much of butch lesbian -not that there is anything wrong with that, as I'm a fag -the show was not half bad (eve. Still, I can't believe that Apollo is the son of Adama. Both Jamie what's his name and Edward James Olmos look nothing alike. There for, their relationship comes across as false (and as much as I want those cheekbones of Apollo, if the actor clinches his jaw one more time, I'll vomit) to me. While I realize this is a pilot, all the actors looked uncomfortable with each other, as in no chemistry. Maybe that'll change if the show goes as a series. Ron Moore did a fairly good job, and he remains one of my favorite Star Trek writers, along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Piller, Hans Biemler, and Rene Echevarria. But, getting them all back is unrealistic, but fun to think about. Hopefully, Moore will be able to write what he can, and not be forced by a studio or an executive producer who stifles the creative process. Because everyone knows that with Rick Berman at the helm of the Trek franchise is that stories and character evolution are no longer what's important. That by bowing down to the young male audience and "dumbing" down their stories, Star Trek has sacrificed it's ideals, it's heart and soul if you will, for a group of people who don't really care if this show is actually on.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but, to me, any SCI-FI endeavor is worth a look. It took me a bit, but I got over my love of the '78 series, hokiness and all, and tried to give this one a shot. I liked some things, saw the derivative nature of much of it, but liked some of the new touches. First, though, you have to be careful when you start praising ANY show for being original. Almost all shows have something in common from one before. I won't get into a Joseph Campbell and archetypal myth, but I think most of us realize that there are a finite amount of plot points which serve as jumping off points. Anyway, regarding a few of your particular problems with the new Galactica...
1) "Baltar's neural clone causing hallucinations, driving him mad (Farscape's Crichton/Scorpy arc)" - It's been done since at least Shakespeare
2)"Frack instead of fuck (Scape's "Frell")" - Frack is an original '78 version expletive. If nothing else, Farscape copied BSG on that one, my friend.
3)"Zoom in and swing shots identical to Babylon 5's digital effects" - um, these are all computer graphic shots and the pseudo movement shots add a tinge of reality. Why is it bad if it works?
4)"Computer virus shuts down defense network (Terminator)" - doesn't it make sense that a race of sentient, yet artificial, beings would target this? Regardless, if the Cylons just went ahead and had an all out assault, you could claim it was a rip off of Empire Strikes Back or Starship Troopers in reverse or something.
5)"tough soldier chick pilot has sexual tension with series star (Farscape)" - this one has been done to death. The shadow of political correctness is long. I agree with you on this one. Starbuck should be a man. 'Nuff said.
6)"Sub-like oldschool instruments witha high-tech glitz (Enterprise)" - here's where you walk in quicksand. The reason is explained in the show. The Galactica has old technology and unnetworked computers to prevent Cylon infiltration. Anyway, how would you have designed the interior of the ship? Especially given a (presumably) limited series budget, etc.
7)"and most of all - the characters name and story premise are ripped off from an old tv show" - gee, no kidding...huh...
Finally, you have apparently taken a common, and unnecessary, fan-boy tactic of denigrating another show as you hope to defend your own pet show. Look, I liked Farscape and was getting into Firefly, that doesn't mean I have to hate BSG. So they took your binky away and now you don't wanna play anymore. That's fine, but don't crap over something by calling it derivative, etc when a logical analysis would show that all of these shows take something from past shows. It's just another case of the "Star Wars Sucks, LotR Rules!" - "LotR Sucks, Star Wars Rules!" school of extremely intellectual debate. I mean, they can't both be ok, right? Fanboys...ya gotta love 'em. -
No way, man, frack came from the original Battlestar Galactica back in the 70's. If you've seen someone else using it in the interim, they nicked it from there.
-
Nosferatu Jones, the original Battlestar Galactica pilot movie was made in two versions: one for US TV and one for theatrical release elsewhere. I believe the movie was even released in Canadian theaters before the US TV premiere. The big screen version was later released in US theaters after the TV show aired.
There was also a second film, Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack, made from the episodes The Living Legend Parts I & II and Fire in Space. I don't know if that was ever released in American cinemas. A third film, Conquest of the Earth, was a bizarre concoction of the Galactica 1980 episodes Galactica Discovers Earth Part I, and The Night the Cylons Landed Parts I & II.
Does anyone know if and when the new mini-series is going to be shown in the UK??? -
To sum up: 1) great effects; 2) Cliched characters; 3) Bad acting; 4) No chemistry (though that is often the case with a new series, in fairness); 5) Too much gratuitous sex; 6) No understanding at all of military discipline. I was not necessarily opposed to a "reimagining" of BSG but if they were going to try something different from Hatch's project it would have helped if they had come up with something that was actually better. Take away the effects - as Harry noted - and what's left is actually pretty pathetic. I'd rather Sci-Fi took their money and funded a return of "Firefly."

Horrible BORING New Galactica and the sad state of Sci-Fi on TV
by bunnyfett
RenoNevada2000 wrote "Cue the emergence of old school Galactica whiners, the newest subspecies of troll seen around here." It not so much that I'm an "Old School Galactica whiner" or "lover", but you slap the "Battlestar Galactica" title on a NEW series, it's going to bring up comparisons. And this new BSG is so s l o w moving and VERY DULL aesthetically. The acting is boring and no one character stands out from the next character. Kind of like the sets, the characters seem to blend in very one dimensionally and no sense of style or wanting to care about ANY of this boring nonsense makes it through to the audience in my opinion. This show is mediocre at best and the fact that a lot of people are "loving" it says something about the state of SCI-FI shows and why franchises like "Star Trek" will NEVER reclaim it's former popularity. This genre(when it comes to TV) is now solely for nerds and geeks like the ones in the classic SNL Shatner/Star Trek skit from 1986. "New subspecies of Troll?" Nope, seems like the same old geeks, but now, completely without ANY taste in what is good.
-
In his interview for IGN, Ron Moore says he doesn't plan to go back for the second season of Carnivale? Dangit! My admiration for him is growing based on the Pern and Trek fiascoes, and the work he has done. It'll be a big loss to Carnivale. I hope he goes on to a new BG series.
-
As a fan of Galactica TOS (ha! i'm the first to use that accronym!) who was 13 when it debuted, I don't mind Galactica the Next Generation so much. I like the updated special effects, but miss those blazing lasers. I don't know why a space-faring race with FTL drives wouldn't have energy weapons. The acting was about on par with TOS (ha! still loving that accronym). Hopefully, the new Galactica will have better stories than TOS, which in retrospect, were crap. I don't understand the flap i'm seeing about the sex scenes in the new Galatica. It was fairly relevent to the plot, and #6 bare-assed isn't such a bad thing. Hell, this is cable, i'm hoping they go blue more often! Let's face it, they have to start rebuilding the human race fast! Btw, I aggree with most that Starbuck still should have been a guy, Moore's change was purely arbitrary. Hey, i'm making Starbuck a chick because I can! I'm Ron Moore, live with it.

Wait just a Centon, Frack isn't original? That's just Felgercar
by mindcrime73
Dude...hate to break it to you...but the original BSG had a whole pantheon of expletives. Frack, Felgercarb, Blast etc. What I want to see in the new one is the return of the Centon, Centaur, Yahren, Micron etc. That is GREAT scifi.

Well, from what i've learned from our own weapons research, the transfer of energy of beam/particle weapons is heat energy, which is just as destructive as kinetic force, and is renewable, where bullets are not. Let's face physics too, anything in motion in space that is "blown up" by kinetic weapons isn't going to stop. All that debris is going to keep travelling at about the same velocity and trajectory it was going in the first place, which in space, is still a bad thing. It just seems to me that energy weapons in space make more sense than spewing out bullets you just might run into yourself later.

Digital effects for Galactica is from same group that did Firefl

I don't know if it is the same outfit that did Babylon 5 as well but as the camera is looking out of the doctor's office when we are first taken to Caprica city, you'll see a Firefly class ship coming in for a landing.

I was actually a big fan of the show when I was a little kid, but that was when I was watching Gil Gerard parade around in white spandex and couldn't yet hormonally appreciate the ultimate visual feat that was Linda Carter. I catch the show now whenecer I can, but here is my question:
"There are those who believe that life here...began out there..."
did that refer to earth or the colonies? I don't remember and was too young to be philosophical. The names Apollo, Caseopia, and others are obviously historicaly particular to our culture, so the colonies didn't take them from us. The helmets for the viper pilots have an obvious egyptian sphinx motif, as did (I think I recall) a great deal of their arcitecture. I guess my question is, before that Galactica 1980 crap, which was never part of the original plan...does ANYBODY know what the original premise of our culture in relation to their culture was? I got sucked into a chicken and the egg type thing during the new mini series the other night, and almost had to beat a guy to death with his own femur for not shutting up about it. Thank for any help, my f%$king head hurts... -
Whatever you think of Carnivale (personally, I think its not great, but better than most of the crap on TV), at least HBO had the good sense to cancel K Street!
-
I like the show, and I think it has all the promise in the world. But the most glaring flaw is that it's just too fucking slow. The story it's telling seems pretty good and intriguing, but not many people care about the slow-going bullshit and general lack of humor in between (myself, included).
-
I just feel that a lot of BG's old school fans are watching the new miniseries through some very rose colored glasses and don't have the ability to divorce their love of the old show from objectively watching this new version. It's hard to do, I know. I used to write freelance for a local paper and would often have to review a concert by a band I utterly detested personally (Journey, Spice Girls). However, I learned to separate my feelings and look objectively at the performance. One of the most heartbreaking reviews I had to write was when the Violent Femmes (a group I love) did a lousy show. I'm as old school of a Galactica fan can get. I remember watching the series opener with eyes as wide as saucers after staring at the Newsweek cover photo featuring the show for most of the previous week in fascination and anticipation. Years later, I watched the series again and still enjoyed it, despite some the faint with of chedder that eminated from the show at times. But you know what? I was still able to enjoy this new incarnation. I've seen some TBers level accusations at Harry that he often reviews movies based on what he thought the movie should be not on what it actually was. (See Matrix, werewolves and ghosts.) Unfortunately, I think the most vocal trolls have been doing this and made up their mind do not like the show once they heard that there was going to be changes made. Do these sad folks I can only ask, "If you 'knew' it was going to suck why did you spend four hours watching it? And if you didn't watch it, then why should we be bothered with your uninformed opinion anyway?"

Should they bring back the old show's Theme Music for the new on
by drath
Who thinks the original theme music should be brought back for the new show? I'm not sure about it myself because on the one hand, the original music is still pretty powerful to listen to and I wasn't even a fan of the original show. On the other hand, its a bit more adventurous in tone than this mini series was, so it might not be a good fit. The drum beats were fine for the background during space battles, but they wouldn't make a good openning theme--which I think is very key to a TV show's reputation. I'd mention the problematic Enterprise theme, but I think in Ron's own words, Trek is a different animal.
-
Find me a television, film, novel or play that can't be broken down to reveal elements from another source. Storytelling is like creating a Mulligan Stew, you take ingredients from a lot of different sources a try to combine in a new way that noone has done before. If you think the Glen Larson created GALACTICA out of whole cloth, then I suggest you do a little reaearch. Larson belongs to the Church of Latter Day Saints and based many things in GALACTICA on things from the Book of Mormon as well as the book "Chariots of the Gods".
-
I don't think Carnivale was that interesting for people to come back to it a year later. Maybe they think a year of running the reruns will bring in new fans but I don't think the show is that accessible or created for a wide audience. And if Moore isn't returning to the show, then why have a second season?
-
This is really great as I really want to know what happens. Sorry nay sayers but the public likes it! Also the rumor that Star Trek Enterprise is being canceled ( just a rumor ) or that it 's moving to Friday nights. So much for people thinking saying something enough times will make it true. Honestly I can't believe the amount of ire from certain old BG fans this series has attracted. Really silly as the new is good stuff. A breath of freash air. The sort of thing TV SF needs. The sort of thing we as SF TV fans need.
-
I ment to say the rumors about Enterprise were just that rumors no substance.
-
I think everybody needs to be realistic about BatGal...true, it was slow-ish early on...but isn't the first two hours or so of a potential long term project used to set up the premise for the entire show and primary character backstories, a feat which can easily drag on into tedium? It's gotta satisfy the fanboy's unqunchable need for intimate technical detail (thanks alot Trek writers for nurturing that monster), and at the same time keep the attention of the casual popcorn-chomping sci-fi fan. It's a hard fence to ride and I think BG did a good job attempting it(all the while trying to do its own thing from an original concept)
having said that, if a series did continue at that initial pace ad infinitum, it would suck. But one with a volatile pace and temperment similiar to Part 2 would be exciting enough for me to tune in every week. Overall I give the mini a thumbs up. -
The original theme was also used during the fly by during the decomissioning cerimony.
-
Yes they used the original music as an in-show fanfare (don't breath or you'll miss it) but would that music fit as the main show openner or should they try something totally new, even if it is potentially less memorable?
-
lets make this clear. Ron Moore is an arrogant jackass, who cannot come up with anything original. i refuse to debate this, and i'm too bored to bother detailing exactly why the re-imagined Galactica was dogshit. the ratings were good (for the Sci Fi Channel) because this channel has 99% total feces for programming, and an ignorant cunt in charge of it all. curiosity also played a factor in these alleged "great" ratings. the mini-series blew, and I for one, refuse to tune into anything called "Battlestar Galactica" that does not contain the Battlestar Galactica cast.
-
2005! Ex-cell-ent!
-
I hope that the theme music does return at least in some form. I must admit that I was avidly against the re-imagining....until I saw it. I totally understand the need to restart if you're going to go for a grittier more realistic take on BG. BTW I know the theme music was played (briefly) during the scene where the Vipers do a flyover of the Galactica for dignitaries or the press or whatever.
-
STOPPING POWER? Kinetic energy?
You seem to be awfully confused about the nature of shock, and the nature of energy. Energy can be transferred from one form into another. A laser can very much exert kinetic energy indirectly, through vaporizing the target material explosively.
However, you seem to equate energy weapons with lasers, which is but one possible kind of energy weapon. Another would be a particle accelerator. While these have technical problems of their own, such as focusing, they have a distinct advantage over bullets: They can be REAL fast. And while mass is pretty nice in terms of kinetic energy, velocity is MUCH, MUCH better. You see, mass only figures into kinetic energy as a regular factor, while velocity figures in squared.
Lastly, when dealing with combat between ships, "stopping power" becomes totally irrelevant. It simply isn't a factor. The only factor is how much energy you transfer on what kind of area and how critical the systems affected are. -
Ditto.
-
Bullets are heavy, Very heavy. They have alot of mass. Moving mass in space is a problem in fuel/thrust. Galactica and the Vipers use fuel, they said that. No magic inertialess drive. I would think it would be more logical to use that fuel you're burning lugging all that ammo to power energy weapons. And you can't tell me they aren't advanced enough for that, they have to be! We almost are! If the Galactica was so obsolete that it used artillery when the other Battlestar's had energy weapons, it would have been a museum long before the time of the miniseries.
-
I really like both shows. However Carnivale is just too damn slow, if I
-
SciFi shot themselves in both legs when they cancelled the well written and produced series Farscape, and instead started producing crap like the "reimagined" Battlestar Galactica! The fact that Neo-BSG (as I'll call it) got such supposedly great ratings is a testament to the type of viewer Skiffy is now courting - young male and horny with no interest in characters unless they're humping each other or blowing stuff up (and we didn't get much of the latter in Neo-BSG) Neo-BSG was a great idea poorly executed and it'll probably go to a series just cuz Bonnie Hammer and the rest at Skiffy are scrambling to grab viewers now that their flagship show "Farscape" is being made into a 4 hour mini that will probably air anywhere but SciFi and do much better there. Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
-
Sure, any weapon system is going to take up space and have mass, but surely an energy based system would be less massive than the large launchers we saw on the Galactica required to accelerate projectiles to a velocity to make them effective in space warfare. Also, physics tells us that firing all those projectiles is going to tranfer inertia back to the source, you might as well be firing thrusters when you fire projectiles in space. That's alot to compensate for with all those non-networked obsolete control systems. But, hey, it's just a TV show, and I likes my engine noises in space, so I guess I can get over the bullet thing, too.
-
My understanding of the Orig. BG mythology was that there were originally 13 tribes of humans in a planet (?) called Cobol. In ancient times, the 13 tribes left Cobol, with 12 of them forming the colonies and the 13th tribe going out on its own to eventually land on Earth. It's kind of unclear how the colony people know that (i.e. word got back to them about the 13th tribe finding Earth or there was a prophecy about a planet called that), but that's the gist of it. My understanding was that Moore had reversed the mythology and that the colonies were an offshoot of an Earth population, but it doesn't seem that way after watching the miniseries.
-
Well put. I copy. As I have stated(more than a few times)I personally did not enjoy the New Galactica and on a smaller note found it odd that they held on to some of the old ideas(The classic Cylon design in the "museum") but put their own unimpressive new spin on others(the new uniforms, the phones WITH cords??, the use of the words hours and dogs instead of centons and daggits). Whether this project had the "Battlestar" brand slapped on it or not, I didn't find this mini-series to be enjoyable. One has to wonder how much this project being called "Battlestar Galactica", the "curiosity" of older fans and the major media push Sci-Fi put behind it helped this mini-series ratings. I wonder if those ratings will follow this project into a possible weekly series, because I certainly will not.
-
Nosferatu Jones...
The Sensurround version came out after the TV release. It was a re-vamped version of the original theatrical release (2 hours instead of the 2 and a half hour TV pilot, Baltar is executed, etc...) They added the Sensurround to it to get more people into the theaters. I saw it while on vacation down in southern California, and it had already been on TV. Whenever the Galatica went by, as soon as you saw the engine vents you about got blown out of your seat by the subsonics...
-
I've taken a flaming for the frack/frell thing and its justified - I was 10 when the original came out and though I remember the lingo, I don't recall seeing the connection to "fuck". Probably a good sign at age 10. If it was only implied back then, it was quite overt in the miniseries. If I am honest, I have to admit nothing Sci Fi does now gets a free pass after what they did to Farscape and the "replacement" programming of Tremors and Scare Tactics, not to mention the shitty TV movies like Epoch and god help us, the sequel. And oddly enough, I didn't think BSG was terrible (hell, I watched it after all), its just I didn't see where the "reinvented" concept was worthy of the budget space, when shows like Farscape were not. Then the ratings came out and it became clear why I am not a studio exec. It worked from a business standpoint. But I wonder how it couldn't with the media promo blitz it was given. Three hard words to admit...I don't understand. Those of you who mentioned it are correct, there aren't a whole lot of original concepts anymore - but this stuff didn't have the balls to stay true to the original, then didn't have the balls to even try something totally original - it just ripped things straight out of other shows with little attempt to disguise it. I could have stomached it more if Moore created a series similar to the premise of BSG, did his tweaking and called it something else with his own "original" characters. Bottom line is though, Sci Fi won, their ratings were great, and in the end I'm hungry for shows in this genre and I will undoubtedly watch. It makes me feel dirty.
And Hugnet, make up your "frackin" mind. Flame for nitpicking and then nitpick. Flame for not wanting to state a point and then tell the poster he is confused, but you don't want to get into why right now. I don't care who you are or how smart you may be, no one and I mean no one reserves the right to tell someone how to post. If you have a point on topic, go for it, it is your right. I just haven't seen one from you yet. Just a condensending tone in your appraisal of other people's posts. Hey for the most part, I admit my points earlier were flawed - it is a Sci Fi channel bias I have yet to shake. I am not objective. Speaking of which, I forgot one: "jump" (I assume into hyperspace or inter-dimensional travel, they never say) is an absolute rip off from B5. Just without the "jumpgates". And I am not to fond of the phallic symbol smoking Starbuck either. She doesn't have to be a Maxim cover girl, but they could de-butch Katie Sackoff a bit. Hell, Sheba was SMOKIN' in the original. And I want my Cassiopia dammit. Skin it up right, make Sheba and Cass lesbian lovers for Chrissakes! -
More SF goo is always good. I enjoyed the show, it had flaws, but what dosn't? Nice nods to BSG:TOS while delivering a nice spin on the original story and universe. The final fight as the Galactica held the Cylons at bay while the rest of the fleet jumped out was perfect. Here's to hoping they keep the cast and keep Moore on as show runner and leave him alone and don't give him the TNT JMS treatment. And I think some of the ivorry tower eliteist fanboy snobs need to get some oxygen in their towers, it's making them act like bitter old fools. Lighten up, put down your dog-eared copy of "Han Solo at Stars End" and have some fucking fun. It's only TV.
-
you need some O2 in that ivory tower. You're ranting. I sure wish I could udnerstand how people get to the point where their evaulation of a show boils down to if(newshow!=myfavoriteshow){ newshow = shit;} It's quite pathetic really. All that baggage must be a burden for you, a cross that you carry for us all. I thank you.

Get a clue people. Farscape, neat as it was, got cancled becuase THE RATINGS SUCKED ASS. Money talks. Flagships shows don't have shit ratings. Reruns of SG1 ourperformed Farscape. There's a reason SG1 is still on and FS is not. Many viewers just couldn't get past the farting muppets and S&M bad guys. Deal with it.

True, SG7, there aren't many scifi channel viewers with open min
by the killer-goat
that being an obvious factor, I don't take any "ratings" comments at face value. Like this new BSG mini-series, for example. If they treat it like any other series they've had, it'll see 4 different timeslots on 3 different weekdays, lose most of the loyal viewers, then go fossil-up and have its demise blamed on "ratings". No show is exempt from their mis-treatement, so don't bother parading the "ratings" comparison.
-
What BSG really needs is a mecha dog and flying motorcycles. Lesbo Starbuck would look perfect on one....bike that is

He screwed up DS9. Carnivale sucks. He's the man who killed the new Galactica. I hope he rots in Hell.

I enjoyed the new galactica. The human looking cylons are the only way to go as it opens the story to more opportunities. The space battles are cool
-
... is because the advertized the living FUCK out of the show for the last 8 months. We heard about this miniseries way back when Farscape was still on the air- We heard about Battlestar before Taken even aired- man, that was more then a year ago... and at every movie theater, in every magazine, and on every TV channel they had Battlestar commericals and ads... WTF!?!?! no FUCK it got good ratings, if any show had an advertising budget like that they would get good ratings...
Did Farscape or Firefly get movie theater time? If they did, i never saw it.
Battlestar was pretty good- I liked it, except for the ending... stupid cliffhanger. But i still miss Farscape because there's nothing like it and its just about perfect in everyway... Battlestar is just too mainstream for me. -
As a true fan of that most rare of treasures... extraordinary writing in television and film, I believe "Carnivale" is an amazing program. This show obviously would never have survived past it's second episode on a regular network, because of it's extremely slow paced storyline. Having said that, I have to admit that I'm sick of hearing childish rants claiming that "nothing ever happens on this show... it's sooo boring"... when what they actually mean to say is "hey they aren't blowing shit up and shooting people... and where are the car chases and other cool, flashy, Michael Bay type shit?!" I watched the same episodes and I consistently enjoyed wonderful, in-depth characterization, healthy doses of religious and social introspection, irony and drama in each hour, along with dozens of clues, aimed at solving the mystery at the heart of this compelling series. I love the fact that it's so very atmospheric, with a highly stylized "American Gothic"/"Twin Peaks" type sensibility to its overall scope. The characters are interesting and very well fleshed out (of course, there are still many questions left unanswered, but that's the point with this type of high-concept, long-range series). Remember Chris Carter's brilliant "X-Files" seasons 1-5. (I'll be the first to say that the series fell apart quickly after the fifth season, but the first five years were exceptionally well done and contained many classic episodes). The Alien invasion/Global Government(s) Conspiracy of Silence/Mulder's quest for Samantha, storylines were stretched out for five years. (Geez, I had to wait nearly two years just to see a single episode containing a follow-up plotline regarding the damned bees). While I enjoy the fast pace of "24" and "The Shield", I also have the patience to appreciate a 'slow-burner', art-house' type series. One that rewards longtime viewers who are patient enough to stick with a series in the long-run. What pisses me off more than anything else is the fact that many 'so-called' educated television and film fans constantly claim to want to experience a variety of innovative storytelling techniques, but seem to generally have the attention span of a tabby speedballing catnip and coke. If you're unable to appreciate a particular work of art due to a deficiency resulting in a substantial lack of attention span on your part, please don't attack the program. There are about a million other breakneck, fast-paced shows out there (most of which aren't worth a damn). Regarding the rumor that the person who is/was the driving creative force behind this series will not be returning... if this is true, its a damn shame, but I'll still tune in and give Carnivale: Season Two a try, because the first season was thought-provoking, high quality television.
-
They are stupid if they think the series would be popular. The ratings for the special were high because people thought it was a one time deal (like Taken). As a series, it will flop just as hard as Witchblade, Birds of Prey, or Firefly...and probably even harder. I was insulted by the movie, because it was clearly nothing more than a trick to get people interested in a series... the 2 part movie ended with so many loose ends... it should have been a stand alone TV movie... with a FULL resolution. No, I wasn't expecting them to make it to Earth, but at least tie up the other sub plots and end with them flying off on their voyage.

by the outlander
Thank You Ron Moore & The Sci-Fi Channel For Bringing Reality Back To Science Fiction and setting a new bench mark for all future Sci-Fi TV shows and movies to follow (I think a light just went on at Paramount in the Star Trek department). Also thank you for reminding us that there is no sound in space. And hopefully when you do the series you will remind us that an alien isn't some guy with a bump on his forehead and that an alien planet doesn
-
I appreciate your help...I kind of figured that was the general idea...but was always perplexed as to what the hell happened to the ship when they arrived on earth and so forth. I guess the thinking is that the Colonial culture influenced all of humanity-from race to culture to religion and so forth, and it got lost over the centuries. BTW...anybody remember an episode of the old BG where Starbuck got shot down on some sword and sorcery world with this incredibly beautiful woman in white on a horse? I swear to Christ, nobody I know remembers that episode but me...
-
If they want to make a Galactica series, I suppose that's Sci-Fi's business, but I almost guarantee it won't succeed. The ratings will probably drop like a stone shortly after it starts. (Birds of Prey is a great analogy, whoever brought it up.) It's just sad that they're willing to put so much into the project when they cheated Farscape and wouldn't give Firefly a chance, despite the fact that it could have done at least Stargate numbers if treated right. (In other words, the opposite of everything Fox did like air episodes out of order, take it off the air for weeks at a time for baseball, put it in the timeslot o' death...) The thing's been on Amazons top-seller list for months. Obviously SOMEBODY likes it. Which is why Firefly is a bad comparison, whereas BoP was a good one. Firefly's ratings slowly dropped because the network didn't put it's weight behind the show, treating it like a proverbial red-headed stepchild. Same thing happened to Family Guy and we all know what happened to it once it was in a stable environment where it was cared for. BoP's dropped despite the full weight of the network being behind the program. Just like Galactica has.

Haven't you been reading? It's already a hit!

Man these naysayers are really scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find something bad to say about the new BG. After the best night on the SciFi channel this year they sound kind of hollow.

1980?!? Dammit, Man, there's no need to bring THAT up again!
by solitaire
Ha! No, I swear, it was an episode. I must have seen this thing like four times while growing up. the girl had a brother, and there was a castle and and all you would excpect. It began with Starbuck dragging himself through a swamp being tracked by the cylons who had shot him down. Barry Van Dyke was still getting stoned in a Gremlin somewhere at this point, so Galactica 1980 had nothing to do with it. BTW, I see nothing wrong with the new series...but is it just me, or is Tye going to be revealed to be Kara Thrace's dad?
-
I remeber that episode too. It was called "The Young Warriors" and the hot chick was Audrey Landers. Check out some pics at http://www.celebrity-gallery.com/content/AudreyLanders/audrey1.htm. Caution some of these photos are NSFW.
-
A few TBers have stated that Ron Moore should have just changed everyone's names and called the series something else. So, what if he had do just that. Called the show "SpaceCruiser Exodus" or something. Would you hate the show this much or would you be praising its realistic depiction of space travel (Hey no sound in space, kids!) and the drama inherant in watching a civilization driven to the verge of genocisal extinction?

by bunnyfett
It's called Science FICTION. And if you want "reality", watch "From Earth To The Moon". So you are praising the "great" Ron Moore for the "realism" of no sound in space, but how about the concept of these ships and AI so F-ing ADVANCED that you can have sex with them and not know they are, in fact, Cylons?? So we NEED to have REALISM(when it comes to SOUND in outer space) but when it comes to ships, technology and everything else this HACK produced on this boring mini-series? The non-realism is okay?? Oh and I love the tool who wrote a thank you to Ron Moore in his subject title and then continued to write "Much better than we DESERVE"...??!! What are you talking about?..Yes, we who mistakenly chose to waste two nights on this crap, don't "deserve" this..."thank you oh mighty Ron Moore for gracing us with your 4 hour piece of crap"..Dude, go get back in line at your LAME Creation Con,I can hear you now.."I think Wesley Crusher is ACTUALLY going to do an autograph session this con!!!!See you at SeaTrek!!" You kiss-ass geek.
-
Jeeeezus...that was Audrey Landers? That's hillarious.
If only there was an internet, and therefore an IMDB back then, I would have been checking the late night cable for Stewardess School replays along with Sci Fi and horror films -
I hated original Battlstar, and absolutely LOVED the new one. Carnivale is one of the best shows on television. I think we can't thank the man enough. People who need realistic sounds (or lack there of)from their science fiction story space ships, need to re-examine the definition of science-ficton.
-
Thanks for the kind words, it's always nice to meet other fans who share a common appreciation (especially concerning a program as maligned and misunderstood as "Carnivale"). In regard to "Deadwood", I haven't heard very much at all, but I'll be there to watch it. I enjoy a good western and I'm also very impressed by HBO's track record thus far (not that I enjoy all their series, but "The Sopranos", "The Wire", "Carnivale" and "Six Feet Under" are among my favorite television programs.
-
The tag line for ALIEN is still my favorite for reminding me that there's no sound in space. I caught the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA remake and thought it had fabulous sets, FX, lighting and costumes. I didn't care much about any of the characters, though, and the dang camera kept shaking 90% of the time...even for 100% CGI shots! That shakey-cam made it hard to follow the action and even harder for me to care about anything that happened on-screen. Argh.
-
damn some of you guys are gonna burst a vein on your forehead over this show.
-
IICL2 or what ever your name is you're parinoid! Geez! I work for a university on the west coast. Not The SciFi channel. I really liked the show and so did a lot of other people. Get over it! Look at my posts a plant would have better typing skills. Once again I used to watch the old show when it was originally on. I was 26 at the time. That was a long time ago. The original is dated and very clearly a product of the of the 70's. I like it for nostalgia and even bought the Cylon head DVD set. However The new BG is now and I happen to like it very much. I suppose when I post for Star Trek Enterprise I'm a plant for UPN! A lot of people liked this show! Deal with it!
-
Sorry I didn't get your name right.
-
Face it! If they had called this anything but BG these same people would be complaining that it was to similar to Battlestar Galactica. These guys just like to bitch! I like the muffled sound in space. It's the best way I've seen so far to make this realistic without cutting into the action. But, what can you do some people just have to be down at the bottom the barrel scraping. Oh well.
-
Uh, I'm fine. No vein busting here, but thanks for your concern. Later Dick. :)
-
Reasons: 1) They are still using paper in the future? Whatever. 2) No more laser eye surgery in the future? Is that why everyone is still wearing eyeglasses? Whatever. 3) Cylons voluntarily become cylon-as-ship? But why? They couldn't do anything other than fly around and shoot stuff. STupid. 4) Starbuck tries too hard. Way, WAY too hard. 5) The girl who plays Boomer can't act worth a damn. 6) The lead was boooooooooring. 7) Mary McDonnell looks like she's dying of cancer, and not her character. Dull. 8) Stupid jump cuts in the space scenes. What the fuck? Is this NYPD Blue, dumbass? --- Well, that's all I can think of at the moment.
-
...careful. If you happen think that this show, no matter what it was called, sucked balls? Apparently you're automatically seen as someone who is going "to bitch about everything". To you Geeks with no taste, I hope they renew your precious new show. ;)
-
Weren't you paying attention? The ship has been teched down during the war to prevent the Cylons from finding any way to exploit their technology. Also the producers wanted to give the look and feel of this being an old ship that was about to be decommisioned. Geez! ( eyes roll )
I happen to like the look because it's different. Also who says this is the future? You'll have to better than that. This is exactly what I mean by scraping the bottom of the barrel. -
By the way I think Starbuck tries just the right amount. I find her character refreshing. It's one of the things I like about this show, The characters. The rest of your reasons are just subjective reaching.
-
One of the things in the old show that didn't make any sense to me is why as machines do Cylons have to fly around in a cockpit? Why not just have a model of Cylon that was a fighter? Well I guess I'm not the only one who thought of this. As machines they might not even care. This is just another model of Cylon doing the job it was designed for. It would make much more sense to have a machine that did this instead of wasting functionality and resources building a fighter with a cockpit.
-
What's with some people's superiority complex here if someone likes the show? Just because you hate it does NOT mean people who do are morons or not as "intelligent" as you are. I guess the resorting to childish names it's obvious to everyone here what your mental maturity level is.
-
but so was Birds of Prey. I'm comparing the two, because BoP was a big ratings getter at first, then began to fall because it just wasn't that good a show, despite high production values. I think the same thing will happen to BG. Granted I'm mostly going on people I know personally, but very few people that watched it did enjoy it a lot. Most used the phrase "boring as hell" when describing it. And not to slam BG, but just to set the record straight, Firefly already did the "no sound in the vacuum of space" thing, instead relying purely on score during moments in space. (Or radio transmissions between people in suits.) I don't mean to bag on the new show for those that like it. I guess I'm still just pissed at Sci-Fi and I don't like their decisions. (Hey, at least I'm honest.) I'm not saying the show isn't a hit. I just think it's got a short-lived future.

New Galactica was soooo much better than the old-WTF do are you
by frankenstrat
This new version ROCKED! I was skeptical watching this because I loved the original, I grew up watching the original over and over again. Heck, my little brother and I watched a summer once where he had a dozen episodes taped of the original off of Sci-Fi.
That said, why would I like the new? Let me tell you...
There were some things that bothered me about the original. Why is it that the Cylon Raiders would stop when they were shot? Why is it that one moment they were depressed that they were leaving their homeworld, then the next, everyone is gambling and partying down on the gambling planet? Why wasn't there more of an empisis (Okay, I misspelled here) on the lives lost on Capricorn? What the hell was Baltars motivation for screwing his own people?
Theres were a few things I wondered growing up...
Which brings me to the new. I LOVED LOVED LOVED seeing the new Baltar. Hands down the most fleshed out character. He thought that he was slipping secrets over to his lover to help her get promotions, when he ends up finding out shes a Cylon. No one found out, but he still has Number 6 as she is called in his head, sorta like how Farscape had Scorpius in Critons head. I loved that too. There is so many directions that they can take this guy. "I'm on my side." Wow...
The President. She had TOUGH decisions to make right out of the gate, and if that weren't bad enough, shes terminally ill with Cancer. Will she find a cure as they try to find earth? Will she die? Maybe they will do a storyline with the one beings that healed Apollo when Count Iblis tried to kill him (I want a rethinking version of Iblis SOON!)
Starbuck..I too was worried about this character. Looking at her now, we see she had a relationship with Zack, Apollos brother. Maybe she has some guilt that we haven't seen about Zacks death on screen yet...will be interresting to see if they decide to try and put her with Apollo, or maybe she gets with Tigh?
Boomer...Probably the character that is the sleeper character of the series, being sahe has the MOST potential to have interresting things happen with her. We THINK shes a Cylon, well, is she? Maybe theres more there than meets the eye. What makes me wonder is lets say she is discovered to be a Cylon...who will care for Boxy then? Apollo? Hmmm. That could make for an interresting tragedy with Boxy...
Adama. Not too shabby. I'd like to see a bit more with him. Who was Husker before all of this? we get some impression, but I want more peeled away.
Apollo-In my oppinion, the character that had the least happen to him. He needs the most work. Okay, he became in charage of the Viper Squaderon. Well, what do we have to look forward to with him? I'm sure we'll see more, but he was the most underdeveloped character by far.
Way to go Sci-FI! Looking forward to seeing if you can keep in interresting and I second the idea of making these BSG of new Mini Series movies... -

Okay, here's WHY fans of the original series should be hoping th
by smash drama
...because you just KNOW that if the show makes it beyond one season there will be an obligatory reunion show with the surving original cast members. Did you ever hear of Leonard Nimoy's version of Star Trek Generations? He was going to have the casts of both shows unite and interact, not just Kirk and Picard bouncing around a scaffold with the Clockwork Orange guy. Okay, so imagine that the new Galactica comes across a rift in time and space and they run into the CLASSIC Galactica (aged 25 or so years). New Apollo and Classic Apollo. New Starbuck and Classic Starbuck. New Baltar and Classic Imperius Leader. Number Six and Casseiopia having a cat fight. Edward James Olmos and a monkey in a Daggit suit humping his leg. It practically writes itself.
-
Yes Dick you're right, it most certainly is. And I believe YOUR mental maturity is definitely apparent by liking this wonderful mini-series that Ron Moore has "blessed" us with.
And "great" question too Dickolas,"What's with some people's superiority complex"? That's so true. I even heard one idiot tell some other guy to "get over yourself"... Superiority complex indeed. Happy Holidays Dick.
Now, at long last, I'm finally over myself, may the Lords of Kobol bless you Dick.
-
Your defensive attitude speaks volumes about your secret fears that the mini was indeed successful.
Hatch clone. -
YARGH! You're right. THanks for the correction. But as you can see it's hard to keep track of who crashlanded on what planet it happened so often.
-
Any show can sink or swim based on how it's handled. I happen to think this new series has much potential. I defend it because I know how word of mouth can sink a show especially if people are following the band wagon effect. However your right this show doesn't need defending. It's already pretty popular. I just thought I would poke holes in some of the more dumb negative points being shared here. It was getting pretty thick.
-
I was a fan of the original and actually still am. I watched it religiously when it was on and I was somewhat apprehensive about the new version, but I decided to watch it and give it a chance. Overall, I would say it was good. The one problem with "re-imaging" is that they picked and choosed what to re-image. Some aspects, such as a few ships in the civilian fleet were exact duplicates of the tv series, some aspects seemed to be copies of other shows, such as Baltar looking and sounding like Dr. Bashir, the uniforms looked like the ones from Babylon 5. The Cylon fighters and baseships kind of reminded me of Independence Day in the way they were presented. The Cylon fighters looked like the Batwing. We didn't see the Cylon fighter pilots, we still do not understand why the Cylons want to exterminate the humans other than the fact the humans originally created them. The human cylons in some ways reminded me of the synthetic androids form the Alien series in how they got sick. I think one of the ships in the fleet, the Astral Queen was a name of a ship in Buck Rogers, although I am not sure about that, but it sounds right. I would have called it something different and created something new and original, but that doesn't seem to be the way Hollywood works anymore. It tends to be "Lets take a good idea, run it through the corporate machine, get lots input from consultants, advisors, and put a familiaar label on it".
-
I was looking at some of the negative feedback and I am so glad I am not a fan boy. Especially anybody complaining Battlestar was completely unoriginal. One night I caught South Park where Butters tried to come up with an original idea that wasn't used in a Simpsons episode and couldn't. The problem now is that almost everything has been done before or a variation of it was done. Yeah they used the same names. It is an updated version of the original which I love so obviously the names will be the same. Why change the names? These are characters that are embedded into the BSG story. Sure Starbuck as a woman is something I'm not too fond of but I can deal with it. I won't go on a useless rampage about it. Edward James Olmos was a very good replacement for Adama. I am a fan of the original series as I used to watch the reruns and I also have the giftset. I wasn't old enough to watch the original series and actually remember it (just a baby lol) but when I was a little kid I did watch the reruns and I always loved the series. The miniseries was great and quite honestly I can say the fanboys of the original will be bitching just like most of the Star Wars fanboys bitch about the special editions and Greedo shooting first because it's in their right. Hell, Olmos warned fans of the original not to watch it because he knew they'd bitch, complain and write letters and posts like some have done here. Just deal with the fact that 25 years after the original series was on the air it is still remembered and loved and that this new miniseries and (hopefully) series was made not to erase the original but to update it for the 21st century. It is also a sign of respect to the original. If you can't realize that then it's hopeless.

As House of Slurf pointed out you seem unhealthily defensive and you need to control your anger- it's not very attractive. The show was pretty succesful and I hope that it's enough to get the series going. BTW pointing out your glaring unsociable behavior doesn't make me superior- just concerned for your well being. Was what I said the first time hit too close to home or something? Also didn't know you were chums with Richard Hatch. Why do you like saying dick alot? Is that a Freudian slip? My name isn't Richard Wolfwood.
-
RIDICULOUS Justification. Dickolas, thanks for being concerned for my well being. I really appreciate it.I know your name isn't Richard, it was in regards to you telling me to "Get over myself"..so you seem very much like a "Dickolas". But I feel bad for you and House of Slurp for being so "defensive" of a lackluster dull TV show. I'm quite calm about this whole thing and find it funny that you two tools want to believe that this is actually important? Now I have to get back to running my Richard Hatch website!! So long girls.

A reliable source has informed me that Sci-Fi will announce when the GALACTICA series will start airing right before this Xmas.
Is there any confirmation of this?

The new "Battlestar Galactica" is the "Space: 1999" of the 21st century. High production values, cardboard characters, overdramatic plotting, no real underlying science in the "science" fiction. Enjoy it for what it is, but it's not the renewal of SF for our time.
-
Let's face it Sapce 1999 never got high ratings like the new BG. These kind of comments continue to sound hollow and have little substance. BG has really good acting and direction unlike the novocain filled faces of Martin Landau and Barbra Bain.
Try again. -
One of things I liked about this show is they really try ( for a TV show ) to stay within the reality of science. The space ships move like space ships. Unlike the original where they moved like airplanes. I thought the sets were good and reflected a ship that had been teched down to combat the Cylons.

Unlike the original where they moved like airplanes. I thought the sets were good and reflected a ship that had been teched down to combat the Cylons. Try again."--------------- Yes, they got the spaceships right. One for them, but there are glaring questions that can't be explained without ignoring science: 1) Cylon physiology is different from humans, but as far as the pilot shows, there's practically no way to detect the difference! Either the Cylon's are identical down to the genetic level (and yet have spines that *glow* during arousal and brains that are affected by radiation that doesn't affect humans), or the colonials have *pathetic* medical science. 2) Cylon consciousness is automatically transfered upon death, which means they have a method of FTL communication. But the plot demands that they cannot use it at will - they have to die and transfer to communicate with others who aren't with them. Further, the plot demands that Cylon sleeper agents "don't know what they are", or a sleeper would kill themselves to let the others know where the fleet jumped to. When the plot drives how things work, that's not science.

" Yes, they got the spaceships right. Ok they haven't excatly tied down the exact difference between human and Cylon. It souded like to me that you would have to rip out their nervious system or examine their brain to tell. Other than the test to determine if they were made out of synthetic materials. As to their method of transfer after death maybe that's just the way it works. Since we can't do that yet and don't really know how it work saying it works that way isn't violating any scientific princlples. The rest is just scrapeing. You're reaching on this one. I've read a lot of SF in my day and when you can't tie the methods to current knowlege and are dealing with science we don't yet have it's really ok to use them as a plot device. Many great SF stories have done this. Try again.

Kiss my ass. All your handwaving and condescension doesn't change the fact that the writing on BG isn't any better than Space: 1999, which is what I said in the first place. If you find it enjoyable, knock yourself out, but don't pretend it's without flaws.

I was in touch with the editor of darkhorizons.com today. Basically,he told me sci-fi is mulling over GALACTICA as a series very soon.
So whether you liked the miniseries or not, more GALACTICA is on the way to being a weekly phenomenon once more.
Move over Richard Hatch- the new Cylons are here to stay!
SO SAY WE ALL!

All of your statements you must realize are totally subjective. You are intitled to your uninformed opinion.

"All of your statements you must realize are totally subjective..." - except for the objections you can't address without saying, "Well. I guess that's just the way it works. Nyah, Nyah." Those aren't opinions, they're valid questions that deserve attention if the producers have any respect for their audience. (And at least I am informed enough to know how to spell 'entitled'.)

The very nature of science fiction is made up of extentions of known science. Speculation. That's what it's all about. Once again many great stories have had plot devices involving science that " we don't know how it works but it might work this way ". Your arguments are nit picking at best. I have addressed ytour arguments and your comparison to a show that had lousy science, lousy acting, lousy direction, is overblown and laughable at best. Face it you don't know how to communicate at FTL speeds. No one here right now does. Using their take ( which wasn't discussed at great length )as a plot device is ok.

furthermore, I never cared for the old show, I hate Star Trek, never liked Firefly. I do like Babylon 5, though. Do I have to turn in my geek card?
-
While I to wish they were using something more advanced than bullets ( as I feel by the time we have ships like the Galatica bullets will be long gone ) I do remember an article I read some years ago dealing with using bullet weapons in space. The thing is I guess bullets are much more effective in a vacuum with no gravity. The only thing slowing them down is inertia. At the time the military was actually considering their use for anti spy satellite defense ( the cold war was still going on at the time ).

SCI-FI only runs crap??? Just today I chanced upon an episode of OUTER LIMITS that featured a guy and gal going it at in the laundry room of an apartment building basement, coming to climax as a gal in a wheelchair is simulatenously electrocuted when she accidentally backs her chair into a circuit board. And as she is electrocuted, we watch her face going through contortions that look very much like she's having an orgasm, while cutting back and forth to the couple as they achieve simultaneous orgasm. Now that's what I call TV!!! And this was on in the mid-morning, for all the horny housewives and their four-year-olds to watch.

Yes, I saw that syndicated on FOX long before it was on the SciFi channel. Not a really a good episode as I recall. The new Galactica is still really good however!
-
You know Sci Fi is fucked when they turn out shit like this and cancel Farscape.
I saw an advertisement for yet another reality show premiering soon.
Ughhh. -
You need attention or something? You state that B.G was better than Farscape and B5. Either you have no taste or youre just an idiot.

1.Bad acting. Even Olmos looked bored at times. The Apollo character kept reverting to his English accent throughout the mini-series.
2. The whole Adama claiming he knew where Earth was and then finding out he was lying thing pissed me off. One of the great things about the original was the premise that they were looking for us. Now Moore has thrown that away. They better find Kobol and a map to Earth in the first few episodes or forget it.
3. The Baltar hallucinating his Cylon chick thing was ridiculous. Lose it.
4. Starbuck as a woman. I was open minded about it but damn, does everyone on the show have to be boinking or have been boinking someone or their relative? The camaraderies between Starbuck and Apollo was one of the best things on TOS.
5. The Cylons as human looking beings. It just didn't work for me. The whole BSG premise was based on war with these unfeeling, robotic monsters. I don't need the "don't create what you can't control" thing. It's way too cliched.
Moore has a lot of fixing to do before I'll be a regular viewer of this show. I'd much rather watch Stargate. -
I thought one of the things best about the new Galactica was E J O. He makes a much better ( and younger ) Adama. The rest is just reaching. By the way how do you know he was telling the truth about lying about earth? I think one of the beautiful things about this show ( and one of the things that makes it better than the old ) is that it has a very complex plot. Lot's of things that have different meanings that you won't find what they are until later. That's why I got hooked, I want to know what happens. Yup! Lots of potential with this show.

A few points from an observer... First, I loved TOS. When I was 14. I'm not 14 anymore; that much cheese gives me gas. I am...older. I loved the new miniseries. Second, this is NOT the future! This is...another time, another place, another civilization, and there is no law in our universe that says that all civilizations develop different types of science at the same rates; the BG civilization is obviously more advanced then ours in some technologies, but maybe not nearly so in medicine. Perhaps medicine was religously forbidden for centuries, I don't know. Third, it's called show BUSINESS. Shows with a large audience, that advertisers will pay to reach, get continued. Shows with a small audience do not. Ron Moore may be arrogant, but he understands this. Which is why he has the power he does. You think you can do better? Go to film school, get an internship, work your way up the power chain. Or write a script, enter it in a contest, and let your sheer brilliance and understanding of dramatic structure shine like a beacon over the dark ocean of creative trash that you perceive. Or, as my wife likes to say..."You think you can do better? Then either do it, or quit your whining!"
