Duncan Idaho goes into... wait for it... BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 5!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... I find it odd that some people are so vocal about not wanting to hear about BNAT. At this film party we showed 7 films that have yet to be released. Not only that, but the were major films. OLDBOY would absolutely blow you folks out of the water. I guarantee it! PASSION and ROTK added to that make for 3 of the absolute best films you'll see in years. The debuting of the WORLD OF TOMORROW trailer and just how much ass it kicks through uprights is astonishing. Don't be jealous... this is YOUR FUTURE. These are the films YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR! You're a movie loving super freak... You are being tapped on the shoulder and being told... MEDIOCRITY IS NOT AHEAD! Celebrate it, the same way we do when we heard PULP FICTION destroyed Cannes... or AMERICAN BEAUTY owned Toronto. Here we have absolutely passionate honest to goodness film loving super freaks with ZERO CONDITIONS or Studio ties telling you about these fantastic films... Enjoy...
Finally caught up on sleep and thought I'd write up some random
thoughts on things I saw at BNAT.
Harry better show us the complete Return of Captain Marvel serials
next time around. It was actually really cool.
ROTK is the best film in the trilogy. That being said, I really
should have asked Peter Jackson if he's started the extended DVD
yet since there were obvious holes. For example, the healing that
takes place after the Minas Tirth battle. We also have the fact that
Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli, along with the army of the dead, show up
the on the boats that were once filled with Orcs and other
friends of Sauron...but we never see the boats being attacked. I'm
hopeing these will be in the extras. Other then the missing scenes, the
movie completely blew me away and I hope it gets recognized by the Academy,
but I'm sure they'll pick some tripe instead. Having Peter Jackson and
his cohorts there to answer questions afterwards was amazing and is
something I will always cherish.
Buster Keaton's The General with a live soundtrack perfromed by the
Guy Forsyth was THE GREATEST FILM EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Ignoring
the fact that Peter Jackson and Mel Gibson were at BNAT, watching
The General was the highlight of the show for me. I might move to
Austin so I can experience more of this silent film with live band
coolness.
Wasp's Nest and Ginger Snaps 2 were both a lot of fun to watch.
Old Boy blows Kill Bill away in terms of a revenge flick. What it
has that Kill Bill lacks is emotion. Kill Bill is all style, very
little substance IMHO. This film actually draws you into it's characters
and makes you care about them and question their motives. Harry
mentioned that there is talk of an American remake, but I don't see
how this could be accomplished without completely rewriting it as
I don't think mainstream American audiences will react well to the
ending. However, if whoever picks it up decides to make it into a
smaller, "arthouse" film, it will probably do well in that market.
Switchblade Romance is bad. House of a 1000 Corpses bad. I almost
walked out of the theater but was too lazy to do so. It started
out with really really good possibilities, specially with the nudity,
female masturbation, and the hope that there would be hot lesbian
sex. And then it just got bad. And more bad. And worse. And finally
the writers ran out of ideas and realized that the movie made no
sense so they added a plot twist that makes it even worse. I'll
have to find this one on DVD and make everyone I despise watch it.
Teenage Mother should be shown in every high school sex education class
in America! This is one I will hunt down and show everyone just like
I hunted down Crippled Avengers after last year's BNAT.
Undead had some problems in the making sense department, but it was
a good movie to watch right before the final movie to get everyone
woken up. Action, zombies, killer fish, aliens, Gillian Anderson
look alike, what more can you ask for.
And finally, the film that everyone's already talked about "The Passion
of the Christ." I like many of the other folks who've already reviewed it,
am a pretty devout atheist. I'm also very much against organized religion
and strongly believe that faith should be a deeply personal thing
that belongs to each person and not something that one needs to go to
church for. I don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said.
It's brutual, vivid, moving, etc. I cried a lot. I tried to close my
eyes but could not b/c the images kept drawing me. I have hard time
thinking about the film without being the edge of tears. This is truly
one of the greatest works of art ever shown on the big screen and Mel Gibson
should be highly praised for having the guts to create something he truly
believes in instead of throwing out something that will certainly sell but
is filled with meaningless drivel as much modern cinema is. Unfortunately,
as much as I loved this film, I am very pessimistic about how mainstream
America will react to it. It's not an easy film to watch. It doesn't have
many subtitles. And most importantly, it really asks you to think and be
engaged instead of just being a mindless zombie. I don't know that
mainstream America is ready...but that may not matter. As long as
even a small portion of the population sees this film, it will live
on and it will hopefully spread through word of mouth to others who
are open minded and take a chance on a beautiful film.
Everyone has talked about how great this film is, but I want to talk about
what it meant to me. Like I said already, I am not a religious person, so
this movie to me was not as much about religion as it was about man's own
inhumanity to man. I think of this movie and then I think of all the suffering
that still goes on around the world b/c one group of people thinks that it
is right and another group is punished for disagreeing and I realize that
we have learned nothin in the last 2000 years. We have cell phones, PDAs,
the internet, amazing medical technology, but underneath all that, we are
just as monstrous as the men who sent Jesus to his death.

The passion of christ has been reviewed several times on this site already....... and there is no mention of the ressurection? I think thats the big payoff of any jesus movie is the 2 angels coming to his tomb and the guards fleeing, then mary magdaline comes and the angel tells her that jesus is risen, then he appears to her and the disciples and ascends to heaven...... DOES THIS HAPPEN AT ALL?! someone tell me! I gotta know........ this isnt braveheart, this is JESUS we need a ressurection.
-
The ressurection is shown in one very brief final scene. No angels or Magdelene, just Jesus, no longer wounded, rising. Beautifully simple and effective. Goddamn BNAT ruled and my Pussy Wagon Key Chain is the coolest thing I have ever owned!

Just an immense film. Mel Gibson is a humble man who has undertaken and succeeded in telling a story many don't want to hear. Very well done.

Harry, your dialogue at the top - why we should all appreciate the BNAT coverage - was terrific. However, the dude who wrote those reviews is a Grade-A knucklehead.

I like your site and all, but I also like to read about other news...you know!, something fresh out of the oven. What you're doing is the same as if I were eating Tamales every single fucking day. I like Tamales as much as you do but if you eat it everyday you get sick of it. I would like some Enchiladas also...don't make me fuck the same bitch everyday, you know what I mean?!
-
... I almost passed my coffee through my nose reading your post. That's the funniest thing I've seen here in a while.
-
The term "the passion of christ" in Catholicism refers to the time leading up to and including Christ's death. The passion does not include the resurrection, so I assume the film does not either (although I havent seen it, so I can not say for sure).

Why does everyone have a problem with tripe...if it's fixed nice, it can be lovely!
-
"Kill Bill is all style, very little substance" Can you really add, "in my humble opinion" after that? Where's the humility? Why does it always have to be a zero sum gain? Why can't Kill Bill be great, and Oldboy be great? Why does one have to be lesser for the other to be greater? Oh, and by the way, (IMO) a great style can become substance. You could put up a still picture of Uma Thurman, and just play the soundtrack of Kill Bill, and it would be an amazing flick. Well, for two reasons I guess...

BNAT, and Why People Don't Want to Hear Any More About It

Same shit, different writer. You give me an Ebert review 10 times but with 10 different names, the sheer repetition would start to piss me off. Sorry. www.rockithardcore.com

Hey everyone...
I've been looking at all The Passion of the Christ reviews. I responded by email to one of the reviewers. I challenge you to read this email and to think deeply on it. My prayers go with you :) God bless you all!
To Rav:
I wanted to thank you for taking an honest look at the movie "The Passion of The Christ"! I am glad the movie has at least momentarily caused you to think about Christianity. I want to be honest right away and say that I am a Christian, currently attending a university that grounds its instruction on sound biblical teaching. Every student gets the opportunity to minor in Bible and learn the fundamentals of what we believe.
Rav, I just wanted to let you know what my favorite part of going here has been. It has been the chance to go with other college students down to nearby cities and share the gospel (the good news of Christ's Salvation in my life: His death, burial, and ultimate ressurrection) in the neighboring cities. I have talked with many people about why they have not yet accepted the gift that God provided for Humanity to save all of us from our sin (Sin is the simple fact that God is Holy and we are not). How do we know we are not Holy? Well, in God provided the Law in His Word. If you just go down the list of commandments (No other Gods before Him, Keep the Sabbath Holy, Honor Father and Mother, No Murder, No adultery, No stealing, No lies about your neighbor, and no lusting after your neighbor's house--or wife or servant or maid or ox or donkey. Don't set your heart on anything that is your neighbor's) Many people come to the false belief of "Well, as long as I'm doing more good than bad and doing my best to follow God's commandments, then I'll be going to be with God in heaven." This is such a grave mistake that has eternal consequences. God's word says in His new testament "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, it is not of yourselves, but a gift of God, so no one can boast." The Law was given to us to remind us that we are sinful and that we are under the wrath of a Holy God who cannot know sin. The sin in our lives ultimately leads to our physical death, but much worse, it results in an eternal separation from our heavenly father.
This is why what Christ did (which you saw pictured in Mel Gibson's film), was so incredible. His death was not for his own recognition, but it was a payment to His heavenly Father. Christ being God and the perfect sacrifice was the only one who could die for our sin. He died so we wouldn't. Yes, physical death might still happen (unless Christ returns again before I die), but God is looking at our eternal souls. He sent his son because he says in His word that "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will be saved." Another verse that points to the saving act of Christ is "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven, given to men, by which we must be saved."
I know you probably have been looking at Christianity very cynically for awhile. But I want you to know that my prayer for Gibson's movie is that it points people toward the one Savior in this world who was able to provide us eternal life. I hope the movie points people to God's word so they can see the essential truths in it (For you, I even recommend that you get the whole story right from the source. Get a bible and start in the book of John and read about this incredible act of God.
We're getting very close to Christmas and I will pray that both you and I can remember the true reason we are celebrating. I celebrate not only the fact that a baby was miraculously born from a virgin in Bethlehem about 2000 years ago, but the fact that I can be with my Savior and Lord for all eternity and that everyday of my life I see God working in me and changing me more into the likeness of his Son.
I'm sorry this email has gotten so long, but I really felt burdened to share from my heart. You may scoff at this and just let it go out the other ear (I'm praying that you don't) Rav, please don't miss it. There was a huge reason for Christ's death--if was for you and me, man! If we ignore that, we say to God that His son's death was insignificant. If we ignore that, we're ignoring a gift that God is holding out in open arms. Imagine getting to Christmas day, seeing an incredible gift under the tree, and not accepting it because you either believe you need to work for the gift before you can open it, or you need to think about it awhile before you commit to opening it, or you believe that there are many other gifts to choose from. This alludes to the suggestion of some that say, "Oh, but there are many ways to heaven and many Gods to get you there." If that is true, then Jesus Christ was a liar when he said "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me." (that's in that book of John that I asked you to read). C.S. Lewis was an atheist during much of his early life, but then came to know Christ later on. He said in his book Mere Christianity that we cannot say that Christ was just a good man. Going by the things he did and said, he's either a liar, a lunatic, or our Lord. He (Christ) has not left us to any other choice.
Rav, I challenge you to read some of the great works of C.S. Lewis as well...(Mere Christianity I recommend first) But I first recommend that you go to the Word of God. I'll be praying that you have read this email and have taken these words seriously and that God would soften your heart. Please email me and let me know what you think of all these things or if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them. Rav, I do not have all the answers, but I have placed my faith and trust in my Lord. He tells us that today is the day of Salvation. Don't assume that you'll be given tomorrow. Every man dies once, that is a gurantee. Please head these words.
Respectfully In Christ Alone,
Mike -
I have to admit the whole affair did start to sound a bit elitist in the lead up. Jump through all the hoops to get in and then on the day of you can't line up before 10, and then Harry will come around and bless you based on your geek knowledge or something....ahh fuck it, I'm just a jealous wannabe anyway. Peace out Harry. M

was a badass in the books, but in the movie versions of dune, hes a flamer, like all the other cast members. I don't understand why a big movie company like newline or wb don't pick up dune. I'm sure pj could make it work somehow.
