CARNIVALE Finale!!

Published at:  Nov 30, 2003 3:32:52 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Will we learn what the tree-sporting “Dark Man” - shall we call him “Woody”? - is up to? Is Ben haunted by daddy Hank Scudder for a reason? Will Sophie dump Jonesy and run off with Libby? Will Lodz regain his sight and realize the bearded lady he’s been romancing is really fat too? Will Gecko be revealed a member of the Suliban? Will the Swamp Thing revive Ruthie?

Will Justin Crowe eat his sister?

Will “Management” turn out to be Satan?

When he wasn’t overseeing “Carnivale,” writer-showrunner Ron Moore was scripting the new “Battlestar Galactica” miniseries, which blasts off a week from Monday on SciFi.

The “Carnivale” finale airs 9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

Yawn indeed on the spoilers. It looked more like a plug for "Carnivale" -- and shameless plug for that bad "Battlestar Galactica" reimagining which Harry rightfully tore apart in his recent review. (You ROCK, Harry!) "Carnivale" is superb, although disturbing at times. I have to wonder what the finale will be like, no thanks to the LACK of spoiler info.! Geez!

    by birdmnjr

I disagree. I believe Management is God, Hack Scudder is Lucifer, and Lodz is Azrael. Now, I don't know the bible, but the way they set it up made it sound as if management is God.

    by p.t. hardon

I agree... I've been on board with CARNIVALE since DAY 1, but each week I have become more and more PO'd as the show adds more QUESTIONS to the list without providing any ANSWERS. I hope that at some point, be it this season, next, or sometime after everything DOES tie together and the writers arent just making it all up as they go along (leading to an incoherent fuster cluck like the end of TWIN PEAKS).
    -
P.S. - From the previews it DOES look like Ben will realize that the TAVATARA that he saw written over and over in the mine shaft really spells out AVATAR. If you dont know what the word means (not talking about computer graphics btw), look it up in the dictionary. I think you'll be intrigued with what you find....

    by ima biggun

Hell, up until a week or so ago, I thought this was a one time run...12 episodes. At the first of the series, they kept talking abot 12 episodes, so I figured it was a mini-series. Recently, I started thinking, man, they've got a lot to answer in a short amount of time. Then, last week I heard the dreaded "season finale"...meaning I was going to have to wait 6 months to year to find out what the hell is going on.

Yeah, there are some big questions concerning Ben, Justin, Lodz, Samson, etc. I'm still trying to figure out why Babylon had to happen. What purpose did killing Dora Mae serve? Who was the bartender in Babylon? How are Lodz and Scudder connected? I could go on and on, but I need some answers. This is a truly engrossing series, but I need a some clue as to what is going on from time to time.

    Battlestar Preview

    by inwosuxred

I love Carnivale, although I hope they come out with some sort of cliff notes explaining what everything means. Even if all the answers are in the shows, I'm just not up on all the various religious stories of the world to put it all together. Still this is probably the best cast on TV and I like that it doesn't beat you over the head with things. I hope they had the answers before they started posing the questions so it doesn't end with a whimper like Twin Peaks or X-Files.

I tried to watch the battlestar preview special on sci-fi, but even that was painful. I can't imagine how bad this show is going to be. If the first Battlestar was a rip-off of the popularity of franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek while leaving out the heart and charm, this one is a rip off of the dissapointment many modern fans of those franchises and the Matrix have felt, while leaving out all of the good parts. It seems to be everything wrong with sci-fi/fantasy perfectly condensed into one steaming pile of crap. How this garbage could be in any way related to Carnivale is beyond me.

    next season and ima's patience

    by inwosuxred

Ima, I also thought this was a mini-series until recently. Remeber this is HBO, it could be way longer than a year before this comes back if it even does. "Season Finale" is the only indication I've seen that there MIGHT be a second season. I don't know anything about the production but I wonder if they had plans to wrap this diffently if they did poorly and were only going to get 12 episodes. I haven't read anything about HBO giving a green light for more episodes or that all the peices are in place. That would be actual news worth posting on AICN(hint hint). They may very well wait until emmy season or until they put out some DVDs to see if this show is even worth continuing for them and to determine how many episodes to order. It sure looks like an expensive show, and it doesn't seem to have the kind of buzz or love from the press that other HBO shows tend to capture. It will be a hard show to continue as there is a fine line you have to walk to remain mysterious without being a tease and not giving so much away that the mystery is gone. People are already complaining about not giving enough answers and it is only the first season. I like it if only because there isn't anything else on TV like it.

Does anyone else find this show painfully boring?

    by gheorghe zamfir

Seems like the show is running as far as it can with "isn't the premise interesting, and by association, aren't we interesting?!" - characters boring, the week by week episodes are pretty stale, with only occasional moments of interest and entertainment, and the dialogue offers me nothing, bout the only thing the show has going for it is my mild interest in its resolution, which seems to be getting farther and farther away. But everyone keeps on raving about this show, so I'm sure I'm missing something.

    Downloading episodes...

    by led gopher

So I haven't got HBO, I want to see this show. I downloading the first 10 episodes off Kazaa or iMesh, but both sources have a corrputed file version of episode 4, "Black Blizzard". I know that 4 is part one and 5 is part two, so I want to make sure I have both episodes to keep on top of the plot line. It keeps cutting off around 7 minutes 35 seconds each time I go to watch this episode.

Is there any other source I can use to get a complete decent and quality of the show's episodes? Post ideas here, 'cause the e-mail address I have for this handle is no longer in service.

    Any help is appreciated.

    by midwat

I felt this episode was a damn good way to end the first season. Certainly, it was a bit disappointing that more wasn't revealed, but hopefully season 2 should answer some lingering questions. It was definitely most interesting the way Brother Justin has descended into evil. Makes me wonder what his schemes are. Damn you, HBO, release more Carnivale!

    Some Musings

    by ioiiooo

Ok, so here's what I think... the tattooed guy is NOT Scudder, but perhaps the last demonic character (like Brother Justin, perhaps someone that had dark religious intentions in the past generation, thus the honoring of him with the fiesta where they paint a child like him, chase and then carry in as a king) who was the opposite of Scudder - the avatar of god for the previous generation. So Scudder at one point father's Ben and then later hooks up with the Carnivale, maybe after killing someone to save another's life, scaring his love (Ben's mother) into her zealotry. He later saves Ruthie's life and fathers Gabriel, before he leaves again, perhaps chased by the evil tree man - with something in St Louis - maybe a final confrontation between the two? So at some point Scudder ends up in the Eastern trenches in World War I, where there is also another man (German? Russian?) who gets mauled by an escaped circus bear - a bear owned by Lodz. Scudder sees this and runs off. Now I think this man is Management and that's the "business in the old country" and also how Lodz knows Management. I'm not clear on why Management hates Scudder - maybe because he didn't help him, or maybe Scudder came back and did save his life, but left him limbless from the bear attack. Maybe Management hates Scudder for leaving him in an awful state? I also wonder if Management is Brother Justin's real father, as he and Iris are from Eastern Europe as well.

    Sophie

    by ioiiooo

As for Sophie, we know that the tattooed guy raped Apollonia and that Sophie was also revealed as a "prophet." Maybe Apollonia thinks that Sophie is the evil counterpart to Ben and that's why she (tries to?) kill her.

    Great Theories

    by ecdc

That season finale ROCKED! I'm a bit perplexed that people thought this was a mini-series as well - it was always advertised as a new series from HBO. And for those worried season two won't be around, Carnivale is kicking ass and taking names in ratings, (at least according to Entertainment Weekly) so expect it to return.

There's some great theories posted on this board. I'm particularly interested in the word Avatar and its meaning. Apparently its most common usage is to signify the incarnation of a Hindu god, usually Vishnu, as a human or animal. In Hindu theology and mythology, Vishnu is the Preserver of the Universe. Perhaps management is Vishnu incarnate. This might explain managements duplicitous nature. In any event, I very much like the idea of crossing faith and religious traditions in the series. The Brother Justin storyline is obviously full of Christian symbolism and meaning, but Ben's storyline is less clear. In the opening episode, the declaration was made that unto each generation is born a child of light and a child of darkness. Ben appears to be that child of light but doesn't exhibit the same Christian symbolism Justin does. Ben doesn't appear to have any Christ or Savior parallels. He has "the gift" but it's hardly like the healing power exhibited by Jesus.

There's also no way Brother Justin and Iris being from Russia isn't related to the "old country" or somehow tied into Lodz or the World War I images. Bring on season two!

Throughout the whole scene with "management", I could not get out of my head that the voice sounded alot like Linda Hunt. My guess is the manager is a 'she', not a 'he' (gender has only been suggested by those who have never actually seen management). Given the size of the Manager's living area, I'd also put money on management being the living fetus that made the trailer for Ben appear.... and the Manager is neither God nor Satan.. but another (possibly unborn/aborted/stillborn) Avatar as she tells Ben he is "one of us". -Half

    by iamgreedo'sghost

First, whoever is paying attention at the site and removed the "spoiler" headline, you rock! I love this site! Okay now to business! Management although voiced by a female, has to be a male (see definition of Prince, even in translation to either Russian or German) One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the Bear is not a bear, but represents a person. Also, Management granted Lodz vision, then ratted him out to Ben. What if Ben only took the vision away again while attempting to kill Lodz. The Professor obviously has some power and maybe can't be killed only harmed.........I think Management set it up this way as a fall back in case Ben didn't choose to kill someone. Does Management want Ben as a servant like Lodz (Very emperor Palpatine if so!) or does he want Ben as bait to bring him to Justin (Who I believe is management's son). I do believe Sophies mom believes her daughter to be evil, hence the growing disdain and fighting. She flips out and attempts murder after Sophie lashes out at Jonesy and Libby out of revenge, then tries to leave. But also just a few hours after she probably learned more from Lodz than Lodz learned from her! Holy Crap, I can't do 18 months of K Street and Curb your enthusiasm waiting for more Carnivale!

    "My Prince"

    by -halfscan-

I wouldn't put too much weight behind Lodz refering to management as "my prince".. the delivery of the line, and the context in which it was used had more of an air of kissing up (like a stereotypical London cabbie calling his fare "Governer".. or someone using the phrase "you are a prince among men") rather than a revelation of a formal title. It has not been established that anyone has actually seen Management so the gender terms used may just be the various character's assumptions. ============= I withdraw my fetus vote... kinda hard to smoke a cigerette in a jar of formaldehyde. -Half

This was a great episode to end on, questions answered, new questions to ask. Still looks great, still interesting. Scudder and now Ben is the avatar (read: god manifest in human or animal form). Management, Not Scudder is who raped Apollonia and is Sofie's father or did you miss the black eyes that Appy had in the vision as she was screaming and the fact that Justin manifested that very same trait in 1.12? by smackfu

All you people that say Carnivale is crap because it isn't answering your questions fast enough should have your frontal lobes stir-fried and fed to you.

I don't know if this has occured to any of you, but this show is about one thing - an armaggedon showdown between good and evil. Each season is going to be a slow, gradual build up to that conclusion. So if the slow is planned to go on for say, 3 seasons, that means they have to stretch out the storyline so that the gradual buildup is there. Which means they can't answer all your fucking questions this season. The fundamental foundation of this show is the mystery. Basically the moment that the mystery is gone, so is the show.

Myself, I enjoy the actors, the writing, and most of all, the atmosphere of the show. I want it to last a few seasons, therefore I don't want them to give away all their shit right away. I would rather eventually figure the puzzle out myself from the morsels they throw us than have Basil Exposition come on and explain everything for me.

Some of you may not have figured this out yet, but a mystery is always far more enjoyable than it's solution.

    Theory and Meaning

    by -halfscan-

Did some quick research online. Keeping in mind Justin refered to himself as the "Left Hand of God" (which is the symbol of God's judgement and punishment) early on, I went and looked up the meanings of the character's names... *JUSTIN* means "just, fair, or true" (for giggles, *Alexi* means "defender, protector") and *Benjamin* (*Ben*) means "Son of My Right Hand" (the "Right Hand of God" is the symbol of his blessing). ============================= What we are probably looking at then is Justin and Ben are both avatars of God, representing His dark and light sides... leaving the posiblity for management to be *Lucifer* (means "Morning Star")... which coincidently is what the traveling show's symbol could point to (although it could easily refer to the light/dark theme of the series as well). Incidently, Lucifer was actually a fallen Babylonian king, not Satan... mis-translations in the Bible later confused the two.======================== Of course, if Justin=Left and Ben=Right, then I am confused at to exactly what Sophie would be.

    by rubberpants

Okay...i was also under the impression that this was only a 12 episode series. This comes from the fact that NY Times says that "the two main characters in HBO's new show never meet each other in the entire 12 episodes". That being said, once i heard people start throwing "season 1" and "season finale" i grew both a little more hopeful and a lil more pissed off. Hopeful, cuz it means that the plots and plot twists wouldn't be rushed or hackneyed, but pissed off because it meant that the series would continue at its Pope saying a Hail Mary pace. Seriously, NOTHING happened for the first 9-10 episodes. It was all anticipation and arousal...it was like foreplay that never had any payoff. Until the past two episodes where shiite happened, but now we have to wait at least a year before we know what the consequences of shiite will be. Brother Justin's storyline was the best (CUZ HE DID THINGS AND STUFF ACTUALLY HAPPENED) although it was obvious he was going to be the evil one. (Do you get the irony? The bad guy is righteous and is a part of a supposedly Good institution while the Good guy is apathetic and part of a supposedly Bad institution! What juxtaposition! What hackneyed BS!) Also, what the hell happened with Sofie and Ben? They always spoke to each other in the beginning, and then the writers dropped that whole thing so she could have homoerotic awkwardness with Libby. And how come Adrienne Barbeua-bot isn't getting naked? I will continue to watch this damn show only cuz i've put in so much time...but seriously, this next season better have some dramatic fuckin impetus or...well, i guess i won't watch which really wouldn't effect anyone but myself. Oh, and almost all of the effects used for Brother Justin and a lot of Tattooed guy stuff is lifted straight from The Stand miniseries.

    Could be the opposite

    by biglawdog1

After the season finale, its looking like Ben is the avatar of good and Justin the avatar of evil but don't be too sure. It seems likely that management could be the devil and he's doing one of two things with Ben - he's hoping to turn Ben from his morality and corrupt him as a good avatar or Ben is actually the evil avatar and management is attempting to bring him into a corrupt way of thinking. Also, it wouldn't be too surprising to find Brother Justin, who appears to be without virtues, to actually be the avatar of good (or whatever the "light side" ends up being) but because of his powers, he only believes he's evil. Remember, Iris burned down the church and killed the children to set Justin down his path and Justin hasn't killed anyone who wasn't extremely corrupt to begin with. Interestingly enough, Ben's powers require death to function, implying his powers have a dark and sinister base to them (sort of irony in that his powers to heal are actually dark and destruction powers). They haven't really explored the other aspects of his powers other than during the sandstorm and I'm assuming that will be taken care of during the second season.

I'm not sure where Sophie fits in to all this, as we're not sure who was raping Appollonia in the first place (mostly b/c we're not sure who the dark tree guy is). Additionally, I'm not sure where the Knights Templar fits in - the fact that Scudder was a member implies he was a force for good, which really does take the air out of the sales that Ben is not also a force for good. I was and still am fairly baffled by the thing with the bear- some of the theories you folks have been posting are as feasible as anything else. Personally, I don't think the writers have given us enough info to figure much of the show out. I am VERY disappointed we're not looking at more episodes for over a full year- its one of the major reasons I HATE getting into HBO series (they bent us over with the Sopranos imho).

I remember reading in a few articles when CARIVALE first started that the creators envisoined it as a one season show...that it would have a beginning, middle and an end and not rely on cliffhangers or give the audience a sense of uncompletedness...This is why I watched...I liked the idea of a complete story...I now believe that MANAGEMENT was behind those articles.

re: I'm thinking this isn't about just duality

    by pretenditscool

I agree that management is probably the russian soldier we've seen in the cafe dream and the trenches flashbacks/dreams.
One thing though. The figure we see in the field hospital minus an arm and 2 legs didn't look like the russian imo.
I think that it's very likely that the russian is Alexi/Justin's father in the same way that Hank is Ben's, but I'm not convinced that the tree man is an image of justin or the russian. I think he may be a third thing.

The boy with the tree markings was chased out of the town apparently as a kind of sacrifice or as a warding (to keep the tree man from coming ?), but it apparently dates back a ways as we saw the image in the templar temple mural.

I sort of hope that this isn't going to end up being about a judeo-christian mythology but the significance of the templars shouldn't be overlooked. There are all sorts of theories about them ranging from the intriguing to the absurd, but they are very closely linked with the idea of the grail (even if that isn't the cup, but the christ bloodline).

I think we're going to end up finding that we're looking at the various threads of the christ bloodline that represent 2 or 3 different aspects of a supreme being sort of thing.

I think Sophie and Ben stopped being attracted to each other because subconsciously they know they're related.

Who was hunting Alexi and the sister ? the templars ? they're the only organization we've seen that appears to be involved and Management steered the carnivale to the templar agent working for the other carny. Why ? to alert them to ben's existence ?
I don't see how that figures, but it maybe.
It's a very odd town that held that templar temple. They have the festival with the tree guy ritual, they have someone selling rare animals, Sophie has her visions in the alley next to it and didn't hers include one of the people from the temple ?

Perhaps their are always 3 avatars despite what was said at the beginning. Russian,Hank, tree guy in the previous generation, Justin, Ben, Sophie in the current one.

    Too many questions.
Good show though. Slow pacing that is both maddening and gratifying. The finale featured a lot of scenes ending with the lights fading out which added a very stage drama feel to it that enhances the whole grapes of wrath feel of the whole thing.
    Very cool, very intriguing.
I'd bet until the middle of next season at best we've got nothing but the barest hints of the final picture.

    Cheers

    Program Run

I read somewhere that the writers have created a four-year story arc for this show. Looks like patience is going to be a virtue as the reveals are going to be long in coming.

I agree patience is a virtue and we should all sit back and enjoy the slow and suspenseful build to final conflict, although I don't agree with your angry high-strung stuck up rant. Try and relax there pal, you'll live longer. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the Bear is an actual bear or representing something else, and if so what?

    The Bear

    by -halfscan-

Aside from "Russia", the Bear is symbolic of physical strength, the power of the unconscious mind, and of going within. Many Native American traditions see Bear as a shaman, and a creature of dreams and powerful visions. ===============================
In the Bible (Daniel 7:3), the bear is one of four great beasts that rose from the sea ("And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh."). These four beasts are later combined in Revelations 13:1 to form "The" Beast. =============================== Don't forget that the Bear is also linked to Lodz... in a vision Lodz asks Ben "have you seen my bear?" and later, Ben sees the bear's hat on the door to Management's trailer.

    Last 10 minutes

    by cj001

Phenomenal season finale. Does anyone know if the music played in the last 10 minutes is from anything in particular? I swear I've heard it in a trailer or movie but for the life of me I can't remember which one.

CJ1001 -- The music in the finale...

    by smarkjobber

...The track played over the final minutes is by Hans Zimmer, from the movie "Thin Red Line" (d. Terrence Malick), and was also featured in the "Pearl Harbor" trailer. It kinda took me out of the last stretch because the music is so familiar to me, but it is a pretty cool f'n piece so I don't blame them for using it.

    The Mexican hooch dancer...

    by soundwave

...they picked up in the town that hosts the tree-man festival and where the Templars are based out of is most likely their spy within the Carnivale. Why would this hot chick take an inexplicable interest in drunken disgusting Stumpy, then up and decide to join the Carnivale? She serves little narrative purpose (other than to give Rita Sue something to be pissed about) otherwise.

    Armageddon

    by macflecknoe

If this show is building up to Armageddon and it is set in the '30s, then it is going to be the longest running show in television history.

That said, the season finale was damn good and I agree with whomever said it should have been the sixth episode. I also like the left hand/right hand of God theory with Justin/Ben... reminds me of that Yeats poem "The Second Coming."

    1930s = Armageddon

    by soundwave

My impression, even from the opening credits (FDR on the Tarot card representing Judgment) is that WWII is set as the final battleground during which the fate of the world (survival versus annihilation) would be determined. Seems to me that whatever Ben/Justin et al do during the years preceding the war will determine the final outcome. If we assume that the future is not set and our present day is not necessarily the only possible outcome of the war, then anything might follow from WWII...

    Armageddon

    by flave

I don't remember exactly the way it was presented in the opening episode but I think it was made clear that the 'Armageddon' point for this series will arrive with the explosion of the first atomic bomb.

    Atomic Bomb

    by flave

llac2: The US entered WW2 in 1941 and the bomb was used in 1945. The show currently is set in 1935 so a 10-year arc spread over the four years of the series is hardly a stretch.

    It's Obvious

    by donkeybells

Management is a demon from The Kids in the Hall, it explains everything. Remember that Kids in the Hall sketch where Kevin McDonald gets his house redecorated and the only change is that the interior designer installed his own personal demon which fed off of his fear, anger and other negative emotions. That demon fit in a little cabinet exactly the size of the one that Management sits in while its smokes its cigarettes. Management also needed Hawkins to kill Lodz, likely because, as Kids in the Hall taught me, the demon needs nourishment. PS: The series was worth it if for nothing else (and probably it isn't worth it for anything else up to this point) than to see that chick from Undeclared show her rack a couple times. Also, the Babylon imagery was cool, but mostly the boobs. That girl's rack has some talent.

    the confessional preist

    by agent bane

when hawkins went into the confession booth (and the guy who healed his neck), was that person talking to him- the same person in his dream in the 2nd ep where hawkins and Brother enter a diner and two men behind them are making a deal when the glass breaks? so maybe he is the side of good trying to lead Hawkins, and the other guy at the table opposite him is evil (maybe Management). does anyone recall the exact scene, which side Justin was sitting (compared to the person in the background) vs Hawkins.

p.s. Justin's sister said that her father was a very evil man in the old country and they could only trust religious person (from Justin's flashback)

Halfscan you have some great points....

    by chewmanfu

You mentioned earlier about Ben and Justin being the right and left hands of God. This made me think...which caracter would represent God in the show. In my opinion the character that best represents God would be Scutter. He was listening to Ben confess his sins, and he also healed Ben from his suicide attempt.

Now I could be wrong but I think that Management is Satan, from the references of him as "Prince" by Lodz. Also the fact that he rewarded his with his deepest desire (sight) and immediately took it away by having Ben kill him (deal with the devil). I also think that the tree tattoed man is management. If that assumption is correct, could Sophie be the antichrist? Is that why her mother tried to kill her?

Just some thoughts that came to mind. Looking forwarding to next season. Atleast we will have new seasons of Sopranos and Six Feet Under to tide us all over.
