How could a Wes Anderson film be any cooler' Check out what we found out about THE LIFE AQUATIC!

Published at:  Nov 26, 2003 1:54:02 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Ok, so we each and everyone of us love and adore the work of Wes Anderson. From BOTTLE ROCKET to RUSHMORE to THE ROYAL TENNENBAUM, he's just defied conventions and expectations to deliver films stuffed with imagination, nuance and the sharpest of wits. Thus far on THE LIFE AQUATIC, we know that the cast and crew he has assembled has been of the finest variety, but today... this rather unobtrusive email sent me to an article in today's San Francisco Weekly, far from the daily activity and locations of Wes and crew... Whatever could they know?

Maybe I'm late to the game, but this was a surprise to me. This is from Michael Fox's film column in the SF Weekly, which is an essential weekly read for indie film followers interested in the hotbed of activity in the Bay Area.

Harry here... HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT? Anderson's brilliant incorporation of the "theater elements" in RUSHMORE took that film to fantastic heights... Him partnering with Henry Selick on an undersea universe filled with Stop-Motion Animated creations? HEAVEN! Kick off the shoes, lay back and just await the glory and the coming of THE LIFE AQUATIC... I'm thoroughly stoked!

This sounds really interesting. Stop motion is always cool, but when it's done by Wes Anderson it's gotta be ten times cooler.

So I guess I'm not as cool as you guys but Wes Anderson is just OK. Independent movies are usualy overrated. So I like them to stay independent. I like my mainstream movies dumb and fun.

    Old news but good news

    by bryan

I don't mean to be one of those whiny talkbackers, because I hate them, but hasn't this been reported here before? I know it was at least commented on in talkbacks, and that Moriarty made some kind of aside about it possibly being true long after it had been reported elsewhere. I could've sworn Harry had already done a story on this a month or two ago, but I guess not. At any rate, yes, this is a very exciting team up. Not only because it's such a great combination, but because it suggests Selick going back in the right direction after the disaster of Monkey Bone. (I'm sure Harry agrees on that and he was *in* Monkey Bone!)

    by dug wells

I mean, come on, somebody had to invoke his name. I hope to God that stop-motion finds a new avenue to work into films again. Anderson RULES for trying it! And yes, ELF did have stop-motion stuff, but they were all characters from the old Christmas specials, so it's not like it was anything new. Darn cute, though.

no, that's not a compliment. what's the point of making movies if they only appeal to such a small sect of society. namely, the lameass art major hipsters.

    lame ass etc.

    by tbrogan

these movies are made for the same reason that super lame ass Steven Segal + some dumbshit rap "artist" movies are made. because there are still people out there who are called fans that will watch certain peoples work b/c they have enjoyed said persons previous work. there is an audience for Wes Anderson, sorry if his films don't fit your sensibilities, but just because a film caters to a small group of "hipsters" doesn't make it bad. Put a little love in your heart and watch all of his films again.then again.then one more time. Andersons stuff seems to get better with each viewing. they are unique and i love them, and trust me i'm not a hipster or a lame ass...okay i AM a lame ass but all of us are. we talk about movies in our spare time.
Hey man, maybe you've only SEEN his films as opposed to WATCHING them...there's a big difference. but to each his own... if you like shitty dialogue and cardboard cutout characters- then you won't enjoy Wes Anderson's work. and if you're a real douchebag then you'll post some mean spirited pointless crap on a talkback regarding us poor meek nerds that do enjoy it. foom.

    Man MiltonWaddams you are HILARIOUS!

    by smeg for brains

So anybody who puts love and care into their movies, and makes them visually beautiful besides intelligent well writen, and funny, is catering to "hipsters"? What kind of crap do you like? You know what is REALLY good for the film industry? getting rid of all creativity! Yeah that will get us all better films! So in case you are wondering why we film fans, you know the ones who could care less about Terminator 3, or whatever new Bruckheimer/Bay turd is being flushed down our throats, are interested in Wes Anderson films, or especially foreign films, it's not because we want to impress losers like you. It's because 99% of the films that come out of Hollywood, no America, are pure shit. Hell even the Lord of the Rings had to be made in New Zealand to keep it good. When the big blockbuster pictures are moving out of the country to get away from Hollywood, then you know it is REALLY bad.

    by weedymcsmokey

There's nothing inaccessible about any of Anderson's films. Like anything else, their appeal is not limitless - but making a comment like that is ludicrous - you haven't seen an image, a context or anything. Fucking stupefying, moron. Whatsamatta? No Jedis?

The point is to make Art. Plus, I think it has been established clearly at the box office by the $52,364,010 gross for the Royal Tenebaums and $17,105,219 for Rushmore that Wes Anderson's films appeal to a broader audience than nerds and hipsters. That, or there's a lot of nerds and hipsters out there.

    Wes Anderson

    by sgt. blueberry

I think the man has definitely got some talent. But I can understand why people have a beef with the guy. It came to me when I was patiently sitting through The Royal Tenembaums when my dropped by to watch the opening credits. He left halfway through the movie, saying "Who cares about these people". It was then I realized, that I think apart of a story teller's job, is to captivate his audience; try and suck them in, make them care. Anderson doesn't really seem to do that, You either care about the story he's telling or you don't. But to me, his stories never seen to have any hook or insperation, nor sit-down-and-watch entertainment value. His movies just are. I think if he had the right material, he could really make something special. Anyway, he's getting movies financed and made, so I gotta respect the guy for that, it's not easy.

Stop motion kicks some serious arse. I hope it's not that overly glossy late 90's lifeless WIll Vinton style animation, but instead the more organic clay sculped and human calculated animation. Anyway...

re: All the comments about this news being OLD

    by pacinohatersgoho

Here's a thought. Some of you seem to be so much ahead of the news concerning certain films, such as this one. Then my suggestion is, rather than complaining of the news being posted being out of date, and consequently resorting to a five year-old's level of name-calling, how about posting a link or something with current news concerning the film in question? I know I'd rather learn more about the film than hear for the nth time that Harry is "a fat bastard" or has "golf clubs shoved up his ass" (I paraphrase). That way, the rest of us can have something interesting to read. I don't have the time nor the inclination to surf the web for 20 minutes to get info for a movie I'm interested in (and there are a lot of them), so when I come here it would be great that for a given film being posted about, I receive other information from fellow fans. Of course no one is obliged to do any of this, but consider it a favor I'm asking of you. Sure, you have no guarantee of getting anything in return, but that's the nature of giving generously. Enough rambling from me.

  • I enjoy big dumb cinematic cheesburgers as much of the rest of us, I guess I just don't share Milton's poisonous jealousy of/contempt for people with a modicum of intellect. As soon as people like him accept that appreciation of art/media/pop culture in general is, at it's core, entirely subjective the better. You like non-arthouse movies - great, whatever tickles your pickle. I couldn't give a flying fuck what you do with your viewing time, but the implication of your post and other posts like it is that you believe yourself to have the right to police mine, or at least belittle me for doing with it as I see fit. In short, you suck. Fuck off. And if you don't like Wes Anderson, guess what? No-one's forcing you to watch his films. That they continue to be made has no tangible effect on your life, so why the bitterness?

Yes there was stop-motion in "Elf," it was done by the Chiodo Bros. studio. I know 'cause I was there when they did it.
