HELLBOY Trailer In Glorious Hellacious Quicktime!

Published at:  Nov 25, 2003 9:40:51 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Well, it seems that Revolution and Sony want to sell HELLBOY very much along the same lines as X-MEN and MEN IN BLACK... and certainly that worked exceptionally well for those films. Personally, I felt the trailer is trying to sell the entire concept of the film... All the characters and all the types that you'll see in the film... Try to hook the audience with something that they can latch on to. PERSONALLY -- What I would like to see from Revolution and Sony on HELLBOY is a more diversified ad campaign. One that sells the scares, one that sells the adventure/action, one that highlights the romance and another that hits on the sense of family that the film has. Oh... and one that focuses on EVIL. A primary character that you don't really get to see much of in this trailer is Ilsa, and she really is wonderful in all her yummy Nazi evilness. ALSO - many of these effects shots are not complete yet, I believe. For instance... when Rasputin has the big glove on and the bolts of lightning are going every which way... there's also supposed to be "KIRBY Energy" radiating about the glove... which isn't there yet. Or at least that's what Guillermo once told me.

From what I hear... the SUPER BOWL trailer that they're making is supposed to just be amazing. Till then, watch this over and over again... Although... coming soon we should be getting SPIDER-MAN 2 and SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW trailers... both of those ought to make you giddy as well. Here ya go...,

Mmmm, QuickTime.....

A Real Look At The HELLBOY Trailer

    by pacinohatersgoho

Seriously, it's always the acting and story that finally make or break a film, so people lambasting this film before they even get to see it are being too zealous. It looks like good fun from the trailer, even though the marketing is similar to League (which was turd). Two movies having similar trailers aren't necessarily the same quality and caliber. See ja!

    by weedymcsmokey

Looked a lot cleaner and slicker than I had imagined - like almost X2 slick. I was expecting grungy and dark, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Loads of CGI too, which is getting better as artists grasp how to use the technology more sparingly and support a story instead of ditracting. I'll wait for a few reviews, but it's far grander in scope than one would expect for a rather obscure comic title.

    by empyreal0

...but I am not impressed with the guy. Not one bit. Blade II was a horrific piece of shit, and made a complete wreckage of an already non-existent plot. So do I look forward to this movie with typical fanboy glee? Not really. It looks interesting, perhaps, but with tremendous potential to become an equally worthless pile of shit of LXG-sized proportions. I, for one, am not holding my breath.

Here's an idea so crazy, it just might work

    by afraidoffans

Next time you walk out of a cinema, dissapointed by a movie you've been looking forward to seeing for quite some time, then ask yourself these questions three. 1 - Would I have enjoyed it more if I hadn't seen every trailer? 2 - Would it have been more enjoyable if I hadn't read every spoiler filled bit of news and reviews I could find? 3 - Would the movie have had more surprises if I hadn't watched the behind the scenes documentary before watching the movie? Seriously folks, if there are certain movies out there that you plan to match no matter what, then avoid all the above and you will have a much better movie experience. I've tried it for a few select movies this year and I've had a much better time, hence I will not be watching the Hell Boy 'teasers.'

Don't use Blade II as your guide to Del Toro

    by movietool

Del Toro has stated that he loved Blade II for what it was - a "kick ass popcorn movie." But "it's not what Hellboy will be." At the same event he invoked how much fun it was to go to a Harryhausen movie and watch two big monsters beat the hell out of each other. So somehow he plans to make a non-popcorn, monsters-beat-the-hell-out-of-each-other movie. I can't wait to see what he comes up with. I'm hoping to see some more of the Chronos side of Del Toro with this - so on top of a big red demon with sawed off horns kicking the crap out of the spawns of hell, we get a bit of the psychological mind-fuck that Del Toro can be so good at. My real fear is that this movie will in fact be great but the public will be so fed up with comic-book flicks that they'll just skip it.

How can anyone take a movie with RON PERLMAN as the lead seriously? This is a "B" Movie being pushed as a mainstreamer. It will probably be an acceptable rental, or late night cable viewing (wow, how I long for the days [or mornings] of USA's UP ALL NIGHT with Rhonda Shear...).

Bottom line, this will be as interesting as the 1991 movie version of CAPTAIN AMERICA. And for those of you who dont remember that version of CA, then I must say, "My point exactly"

in-depth ananlysis of trailers is pointless...

    by mickfinn

... and so is the amount of time and energy we put into ripping a film to shreds before it's even been released, or finished for that matter. The trailer doesn't catch your interest? Fine, chances are you won't be seeing the movie. Your mind, your decision. But it burns my ass when some jackass comes on and says " how can anybody think this is going to be good?" as if their opinion somehow carries more weight than everybody else's. It's all well and good to have an opinion, just make sure that opinion is based on more than two minutes of quickly-spliced together film created by the studio. It seems to me ( and I grow tired of repeating this ) that the only valid opinion here is one of negativity and venomous envy. In the previous HELLBOY talkback, we had all kinds of opinions. The ones I love are where people seem to come in off the street and say " superhero movies suck" or " I hate comic books". No one's holding that against you, but in all honesty, what in Jeebus' name are you doing here then? I will gladly take negative criticism from someone who knows the source material or someone who's actually balanced enough to say they enjoyed a comic-based film or two. That is a well-rounded and informed opinion, and I'll respect them if they hated what they saw. I do believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe unless you truly have something informed or constructive, maybe you should find another forum.
As for Harry liking what he saw...Christ, he is allowed to get excited about something once in a while. Seems to me the only time the TB ninnies listen to him is when he's dumping all over someone (Paul Thomas Anderson springs to mind). So he liked DAREDEVIL and you didn't. So he's excited bout HELLBOY and you're not. Harry hasn't sold out, folks. He's a fan, and I think we have forgotten that part of fandom - the excitement. We seem to approach these films with a knee-jerk Comic Book Guy reaction, or worse, the mistaken belief that we can somehow alter the creation of the film itself because dammit, we're the fans ( I read one ninny giving a blow-by-blow description of how HE would make the trailer. Buddy, the minute you actually start making the films instead of renting them from the store, then you go right ahead. Till then, eat yer Milk Duds and shut up ). It's as if we think the filmmakers are trying to deliberately fuck us in our wallets. You go to the movies, you takes yer chances. You might like it, you might not and that's the way it should be. Making films by fan-committee so that they are all things to all the fans is not the way to go. Let the filmmakers do their job, and you do yours as a spectator. What you think after the fact is up to you.

I lost my original point along the way. I guess what I'm trying to say is let's get back to being fans, and try to shake off the armchair critic demeanour.

By the way, I think HELLBOY looks great. Can't wait.

Kids, being like that does not make you look cool. No, really!

I couldn't tell what the fuck was going on during the Venice scene. My interestd was like the invisible man in that movie, it took off half way though and barely came back in the end. Good people! I'm trying to be on your side, but i'm starting to prefer the fuck-wits! On Hellboy: it stands a good chance of being a complete mess, especially if the studio gets scared nearer the release date. At its very worst, its going to be an extremely interesting mess, with lots of wriggly morsels of joy to pick at. If it comes together even half right, a new star will shine in the heavens next year, formed from congealed geek-jizz, and lit by the white heat of geek-love. nice

Here is a predictive review on behalf of Robofag:

    by robofag

00110011110... my built-in sucks-o-meter, designed to decrypt any potential fiasco of a movie from its trailer, tells me the coefficiency of the relation between the quality of the trailer and the quality of the movie as a whole is very high, and that this trailer is very interesting, and good-looking. Although the only thing that looks somewhat watered down and unrealistic in that movie is Hellboy, the correspondance analysis my systems just finished are telling me that its just a goddamn trailer and that the whole thing should be better in the movie, actually. This analysis is based on the fact that the Hellboy exposure in this trailer is far from being large enough to show what Hellboy actually is. It just gives a glimpse of his looks, and of his great powers. Finally, readers may consider that my suck-o-meter system actually gave a terrible coefficiency out of the Spiderman trailer back in 2002, and the film was proved to be a highly popular success, although it was a dumb and poorly CGI'ed movie... This analysis was provided to you on behalf of Robofag, the queerest of all Robots, who now needs to go play with his own cyborg ultrasensitive dildo.

    Finally! Downloadable zipped trailers!

    by mooseboy

Does anyone know why most sites insist on using in-browser players that delete the downloaded file so you can't see it again without waiting for the damn download again? Sometimes you can turn the computer off and then recover the trailer from temp files, but sometimes not. Not everyone has a frickin' T1 line to their house!

Harry, if you're going to continue pandering to the QT people and slobbering over their format, you should throw your considerable weight around and get them to stop making it so damn hard to view the trailers. I can't view more than 20% of the trailers I want to because of this ridiculous crap they pull.

First off, I'm a fan of the books and have been looking forward to this for a while. Overall the trailer was good. It does what you want for an early trailer. I just hope that the movie is not so bright (this looked down right cheery) Plus they kinda glossed over Hellboy himself! The books are spooky at times and the trailer didn't really have that effect.

I know it's the first trailer and you can only squeeze so much into a trailer. I agree with some of the other post that it does kinda come off as LXG meets Xmen. Lets hope the next trailer and the movie brake the 'super-hero' mold and lean more towards the actual source material.

    Pearlman is Perfect

    by theriggerx

Nobody could play this role better. That's why he's starring. It doesn't make it B movie shlock. It may just elevate the movie to greatness. Imagine the possibilities. Casting an actor because he can act? It's almost unheard of.

The Trailer is vague because Del Toro Doesn't want to Scare away the uninitiated. He said the next two trailers would be far more agressive. Plus the Effects are only 10% complete. To early to judge.

As for studio interference. Del Toro and Mignola both say there hasn't been any. The execs at Revolution love the character and trust that Guillermo will make a great film. That's not to say that there is no chance they will panic, but listening to Del Toro it sounds unlikely.

And what the hell is wrong with the people saying Perlman looks like he's made out of playdoh? He looks great. I'm sorry they didn't want to spend the money to genetically engineer a living, breathing Hellboy, but if they did you'd probably bitch that one of his horns is a quarter of an inch to the left. Dude, come on your smoking some serious weed if you think for a second your woman Harry hasn't sold out. I don't know how long you have been visiting this site but he has sold out as much as Lucas has. I remember when he had an objective opinion and use to piss on things when he didn;t like them, now he is too concerned that he won't get his cameo or early screening to bash anything. A perfect example is Cabin Fever, his review was shit, absolute blow job to the director shit. ME trusting him, based on his review went to see it and it didn't even address the horeshit in the movie, the weeks later he conviently back tracks, I coiuld bring up 100 examples. He's now owned by the studios, its like he borrowed form the mob and he will have to payback for the rest of his life. Hey, I understand, it must be nice seeing all that stuff early, movie cameos, rubbing elbows with the big shots, I might sell out too, but don't for a second say that he hasn't. His reviews(for the most part) have turned into political blowjobs. DON'T YOU TOO, stay with us, stay with the original fan core, don't be currupted like him. Whellup, I'm biased to see this film despite the crappy trailers just because I'm an overzealous Hellboy fan. Why don't some of you people try using your fucking brains huh? Firstly there are no aliens in this movie, secondly the director I am sure won't fuck this movie up. So maybe Harry is "selling" out, all you assholes would to if you had big studios flash stars and $$$ in front of you face, so that's neither here nor there--I really don't see what is wrong with this movie- you have action, a cool plot, hardly any CGI which usually ends up looking fake and crappy and cartoony half the time, you have beautiful visuals, sets and creatures, and the only thing that I am concerned about is that the humour might be inappropriately placed, hopefully not, I know I DONT wanna see Hellboy slip on a banana peel and say "Ouch, my bum" or something shitty like that...I am just hoping it's not campy. This movie will more than likely have nothing really wrong with it and will be a fun film, so honestly think hard nay-sayers and really see what's going on here, the makers of this trailer want to make sure there is mass appeal, because the comic isn't that widely known, so therefore they kinda have to cater to every movie goers needs. I think all the hard work that the people put into this movie will no doubt pay off...also it's got bitchin'action figures based off of it by Mezco :::::check my next post::::: :o)

    causes & effects

    by superpaddy

First I have to second what my compatriot Mick Finn above said about Harry's reviews. I got suspicious back around the time he lavished praise on the Mummy 2. I also want to know who got to him in the months between his accurate criticism of the Matrix 2 and his peculiar turnaround for the (even worse) Matrix 3. The last poster complains about whiners and says that he is a Hellboy fan and looks forward to the movie, regardless. Fair enough, but here is an example of what I see as the problem - someone like McG comes along with his Charlies' Angles bollocks, and some recognise it immediately as garbage and stay away, but enough take this "hey, chill out, its only a movie, don't be so negative" attitude, and pay their dollars and take their chance. Fine, you might say, no harm done, except then the damn thing makes a profit and the studio fuckos think "hey! This McG guy is what the kids want, let's throw him some more work." What happens next? Two or three summers from now, we all have to endure the Superman legend being destroyed, with Paul Walker/Ashton Kutcher acting the cock-knocker amidst a barrage of cheap gags and seen it all before CGI, while the great film that could of been, with a real actor in the lead and directed by a Michael Mann or Peter Weir, or someone in their league, never happens. And that is why informed critical opinion is NOT the same as whining. Taking a firm stand is doubly important in an age when even the most offending and least successful shit movies seem to make their money back on DVD sales. If we keep buying into the crap, they'll keep making it. Go to Rottentomatoes, read the main review, make an informed decision, and stop going to see these lousy movies. In fact I think we should all go see Master & Commander at least twice.

I notice there's little real enthusiasm in these talkbacks, even (or should I say especially) from the die-hard fans who are so excited to see this movie. They are quick to defend Hellboy, but are not gushing about what they've seen so far. Why? 'Cause we know, deep down, this looks like caca. I'm pissed. It's a real slap in the face, to take a relatively minor character in the world of comic-dom and completely butcher it so that the rest of the world sees it as a bad joke. If they've got something better planned for the Superbowl, they'd have been better off to just wait rather than release this garbage.

just a feeble attempt to appeal to the mtv/playstation generations: if you've ever played some of the darker, creepier, and most definitely supernatural levels in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, you may have a small glimmer of how spooky some of the Hellboy material can be: the whole "post-WW2 resurgent-nazi voodoo, 'tampering with powers you can't possibly understand', skin-crawling metaphysical beasties" atmosphere. And Hellboy did it long before that game. Does that help? Am I guilty of owning a video game? Sure. Does this trailer reflect the comicbook? Not really, and I won't defend it. But c'mon people, it's painfully obvious this is intended as their weak-ass 'public-introductory' snag for the unwashed masses. Let 'em shove the next one out the door before calling it a total miss.

my simple analysis of TB'ers and people in the world, please r

    by bourne greyelf

You know, you can learn alot about the personalities of people in the world, by just coming to this website. I've learned alot. First and foremost, people are extremely negative. Second, I've noticed a sort of "jump on the bandwagon" pattern amongst people. For example, if one imbecile states," looks like Lxg meets X-men meets MIB", then multiple imbeciles will think their clever in making this pointless and flawed comparison. Third, it seems to me that, as Mcfinn already stated, that only a negative opinion is deemed as credible, but this probably refers to my first analysis in this post, that most people are negative. Fourth, whenever someone dashes a movie, it seems to me they don't even like the genre of the film, and NEVER give an example what WHAT a GOOD movie in the same genre is, so we can compare. Fifth, the negative talkbackers ALWAYS insult anyone who likes the alleged "bad" movie, they feel they must further drive the point home that their opinion is superior by verbally, ( or textually, if thats a word) destroying someone with rediculous insults. And sixth, the last, though theres probably more, there are the people that simply bash to rise peoples hackles, though these types are obvious, so you can just ignore them. Well, thats all I wanted to say, flame me if you will, but I think in doing so, you lend validity to my assesment. thank you all and good day. ps, I think Hellboy looks promising.

I think you missed the point, SuperPaddy...

    by mickfinn

...mind you, my last post was longer than a D.W. Griffith film, so I can understand why. People will like what they like. I happened to like Charlie's Angels films for what they were, the cinematic equivalent of a cheeseburger. I also liked About Schmidt, Fight Club and Wonder Boys for other reasons. I like each for what they are, and if I get at a little entertainment, then I'm satisfied. As for Serious Black's comments about people not defending the trailer, there are plenty of positive feedbacks here, and nobody NEEDS to defend it. You like it or you don't. It's a trailer, nothing more, take from it what you will. The trailer did its job for me, which was to let me know the movie's coming out and it piqued my interest. When I say "if it's not fun, stop doing it", I mean being a fanboy. If you spend all your time complaining, then it's not really worth it is it, is it?

In fact, I've taken Harry to task before on his biased reviews. So, no,I'm not new here. What I said was just because Harry likes something doesn't make him an automatic sell-out. He's a fan of the comics and the other fans (not all, apparently) seem to like what they see. You're pissed because you hated a movie he recommended? You're a big boy, you can make your own choices. I haven't sold out, I'm not crossing over. I'm just tired of the knee-jerk bashing that goes on in the Fanboy Nation.

    by superpaddy

most of the people who come to this website presumably write their posts quickly, and for some reason it seems to be far easier to pour out negative criticism than write something constructive or in praise. Its like a backbiting conversation in a bar - people can spend hours bitching about what a prick someone is, employing multiple phrases and much colourful language to get across the point, but conversations speaking well of someone mostly begin and end with "he's a cool guy", followed by a prolonged embarassing silence, then everyone goes home. Maybe it reflects badly on our species, but its the way it is. I don't agree that those of us who regularly criticise Hollywood comicbook adaptations just don't dig the genre. Quite the opposite in fact - we love the genre, but hate the repeated injustices done on the big screen. I slam these film versions becuase the makers seem to have absolutely no inkling of what they are dealing with. Here is a fairly random example -Tim Burton's original Batman, along with the first hour of Donner's Superman, still comes closest to grasping the true feel of a comic book universe. But even Burton, genius though he often is, screwed it up. He took the Batman's origin story - the death of his parents, the basis of this tragic hero - and made the Joker his parents' killer. Then Batman kills the Joker, i.e. gets some closure as regards his deeply wounded psyche. This is so fucked up, runs so contrary to the legend of a man who can save the world ten times over, but can never come to terms with OR AVENGE the random and pointless murder of his parents. 14 odd years on and it still pisses me off. Sorry if I strayed too far off the point, I'm afraid I know naught of Hellboy, but its this type or repeated fucktardedness by the film adapters that irks me, and I think others. I will continue to bitch until one them finally gets it right. And while I am on here, did anyone else consider it strange that they used 'bullet-time' effects in Matrix Reloaded for that scene involving Trinity falling from the window, when bullet-time was specifically developed and used in the original film to emphasise the point that Neo, a human, can do things in the Matrix that no other human can do, i.e that Trinity cannot do? Will someone please tell me I am wrong on this inconsistency, albeit a minor one amidst many in those two travesties.

With no major stars, a character that 99.9% of the general public has never heard of, and costumes that look like they were bought at the "Going Out of Business Sale" of the Might Morphin' Power Rangers - I predict this thing will gross about $18 million, leaving the studio with a huge loss.

god , it's just too slick looking. BPRD HQ just looks like the X-Men HQ. it's too big and techno. they should have just made it some musty old house. Hellboy was never about gadgets. i don't understand why they feel the need to ignore the unique look of the comic and instead imitate other recent films. i am so gutted. - one thing they could do to fix the look of the film at this late stage would be to render the whole film so that it looked like it was shot on 16mm - make it more broody and grainy. but whats' going on with the young dude in this film? the comics didn't need that kind of device. it seems that Hellboy isn't even the main character in this. have to stop writing, i'm getting more and more piseed off the more i think about it. i hope this trailer is misrepresentative.

The devils back bone is a great movie to. Did you like Reloaded? When someone said they did what did you think hmmm? We are judging scenes (chosen probly by some corperate pinhead) of an unfinished movie remember. They trailer looks like all the movies i mentioned. I have faith in the director, but It seems like people on this sight do follow a pack mentality. Now i know we are all fans of the genre but we dont have to ALL like something. Unlike most people I have my own opinions and think taste is personal. Besides the character names it looks like a nothing (story fx concept) that we have never seen before. I would rather see Blade of the Immortal or Battle Angel made into a movie, then again I never read Hellboy. And the makeup looks corny to me. He looks like a new borns nut sack.

C'mon guys, you've got a movie called Hellboy, centered around a character named Hellboy - you've got to sell us Hellboy, not Abe Sapien! Here's my trailer script, humbly and freely submitted. // MR. VOICE: Born in the fires of Hell ... Summoned to Earth to destroy us all ... And now ... He's on our side! ... This spring ... Get in the fight ... Hellboy! // I'll leave the visuals to you, but you've gotta work in a shot of Hellboy saying, "Aw crap!" when some big bad is coming at him, followed by him punching said big bad with the ol' stone fist. And thus (w/a nod to Chicken George), I return to my real job.

Y'ever sit around and Monday-morning quarterback with the guys in the office / class / cell block / whatever? That's what we're doing here, and that's what the internet brings to filmgoing. Our fan experience becomes analogous to that of the sports fan as we kvetch about the front office, about the lineup, about how the season is going. We have our favorite players, and we have the teams we root for, and we have our opinions of how things should be done in our perfect world. For the most part, as with sports fans, we're full of crap and, for the most part, we're wasting our time. But it's fun, just as it's more fun to stand up and cheer than it is to just sit quietly in the stands. So I'll play my Hollywood Stock Exchange, I'll talk back here on AICN, I'll imagine fun trailers, and I'll BS with the good people here, just as the guy down the hall plays fantasy football and whines about who should be QBing for the Redskins. I'm not hurting anybody, and I'm having a good time. Why would anyone want to rain on my parade?

    by jocutus

In the original Matrix movie, the first use of "bullet time" style fx was at the beginning when Trinity does her "crane style" kick. She freezes in mid air as the camera panned around the room before she knocked out a cop. Since she was the first to get the treatment its fair to use it for her action "death" scene. No one has ever survived fighting an Agent (unless Neo shows up at the end to save their ass).

And I don't take joy in it. This disillusionment is almost as bad as when I realized, at age 10, that Dr. Who was really cheap and cheesy; or last year when I realized the fans cared far, far more about Buffy than Joss Whedon did during the last few seasons of the show. PJ either doesn't care about or doesn't understand the spirit of the source material. LotR is merely a vehicle for this man-child to make movies full of monsters and battles in the NZ landscape. There, feel better? Back tangentially to the subject, Ron Perlman was great in Aliens 4. That is all.

The movie may be good, but the trailer isn't.

    by shiver1

I have to agree with the "blah trailer" comments. The movie may very well rock, and I hope it does, but unless the studio improves their trailers the only people who are going to see it are Hellboy fans who were probably going to see it anyway.

I think other people have pointed out the biggest problem with this trailer - its "we're ripping off X-Men" feel. At the very least they should be trying to sell Hellboy as an *original* story, instead of making it look like every other comic book movie of the last few years. To be fair to the trailer, nothing it shows on screen looks like it sucks, so I can see why hellboy fans are happy. But in order for the movie to do well at the box office, its trailers need to do a lot more than reassure fans that Del Toro hasn't destroyed the primary material.

The bit that annoyed me most about this trailer was the agent's reverential "Hellboy!" when he sees the main character for the first time. The trailer presents this moment as though everyone watching knows who/what Hellboy is and is going to wet themselves the first time they see Perlman in costume. For the average movie-goer - hell, for the average comic-loving geek who has just never gotten around to reading Hellboy - this moment isn't going to work. Hellboy is not instantly recognizable in the same way that Spiderman and Batman are, and presenting him *as though he is* is off-putting to the non-fan audience.

It also doesn't make sense in terms of the trailer, which puts a lot of emphasis on the X-Men-like "team" of monsters (whom we don't know and are never introduced to) only to end with the title "Hellboy." I was already familiar with the movie from this site, but even I felt a bit of whiplash at the sudden focus of an apparent team-movie on a single character who doesn't seem like the main hero in the trailer. (Sure he's given a name, but he's sharing screen time with a host of other critters, and the most screentime goes to the doe-eyed agent boy.)

Personally, I would have liked a trailer that introduced the origins of the character and made it clear that he was the hero of the movie. But hopefully the next trailer will be more successful - after all, the Fellowship of the Ring trailers didn't really rock until the last one.

Your a fool, just like Harry and Lucas, you sit there and say just because Harry liked a movie you hated your pissed. NO not at all. Harry sold out a long time ago, if you can't see this as clear as he is fat you are just another sheep, your the kind of fanboy that likes everything, shit or not, I'm sure you areone of the idiots that defends episode 1 and two, and you just loved it when Yoda was bouncing off the walls fighting withh his mini saber. You were one of the assholes clapping. I'm sure everything opinion you have ever had mirrors Harry's, your each other bitches. THINK FOR YOURSELF! woman

Hey I play HSX and worry about the Redskin QB

    by theriggerx

To those who say this will never work. There is no public recognition of Hellboy. There are no big stars. Think about the Matrix.(the original not the sequels). Nobody knew what the hell the Matrix was. At that point people were more likely to spit in Keanu's face then go to see his movies. The public is more than ready to except things they know nothing about. True, it's not going to make Spiderman money. He'll it's probably not even going to make Hulk money. But it will make Blade money or better. It will perform well in the international market. And, it will kick ass on Video and DVD. Maybe I'm dreaming. Maybe I have to much faith. But I prefer to remain hopeful instead of blasting a moties chances based on one 2 min trailer, which I didn't think was that bad. LXG my ass. Maybe X-men, but that was a damn successful movie.

This trailer definitely blew my skirt up.....

    by comicbookgeek77

First of all I want to mention that Guiellermo Del Toro is a kick-ass director. Anyone seen The Mimic, not to be confused with that shit ass movie The Relic, well it kicked ass. Blade 2 kicked ass, DESPITE the shitty ass story. You dumb fucks who are calling Harry a sell-out because he actually LIKES this trailer can kiss my pimply ass! This movie looks heads and shoulders BETTER than most of the shit-for-brains movies coming out next year. Please allo me to provide a brief list of two MAJOR sell-out's and ASSHOLES. Sellout #1: George Lucas for making Ep I and II and totally fucking up any "mystique" the Star Wars franchise might have once had. He's a greedy asshole interested in selling toys. Sellout #2: Jim Davis for greenlighting the upcoming Garfield movie. These Hollywood dipshits are going to fuck that one up almost as bad as they fucked up the Cat in the Hat movie. It amazes me how these DUMBFUCKS can't just stick to the original source material. But I digress, Hellboy will kick-ass and who gives a fuck Ron Pearlman is the star? I don't. Mike Miognola is going to make sure this movie is done right.

This movie should have come out in 1998...

    by sgt. blueberry

...Becuase back then, audiences would have eaten it up. There's a lot of people saying this movie is being judged harshly, but I think there's a pretty good reason for that. In the last four years, the bar for the sci-fi/vfx/ action movie genre has been raised EXTREMELY high. It just takes a lot to tap in to the public interest if you're making that kind of movie these days. It's sort of sad, becuase I know these type of movies will contribute to the end of the golden age of comic book movie adaptions. But the end has to come some time.

Now this comment is a little off color, but hey, we're all here to say what we think, right? Doesn't actor who plays the lead Josh Meyers character seem like a bland boring casting decision? He looks like the only role he's suited to play is that of an out of work wannabe actor serving drinks at a bar.
I know his character is that of a cypher, playing seconed banana to all the colorful "special" characters, which is why I would have loved to see an interesting casting choice. I would've liked to see that actor who played "kid" from Matrix 2 and 3 in this role. Ah well...Boring place holder actor, for a boring place holder character.

P.S. I'm in no mood to swallow any kind of romance between Josh meyer's and Selma blair's characters.

  • is more proof that most of you have your heads squarely up your own asses...this is one of the coolest trailers i've seen in a loooonge time. hellboy's appearance is supposed to look ungodly and twisted. everything from his beady(sp?) eyes to his "untamed" side-burns is 100% hellboy. this movie should make more than daredevil or hulk. all i want after seeing the trailer IS more hellboy. from his horns to his tail the guy is straight out of the comics. especially his devil-may-care attitude. its perfect. fuck the naysayers, they dont know what in the HELL theyre talkin about.

    by gypsytrobot

Yeah, the kind of geek who lived for these movies to come out, wanted to love them totally, and was disappointed. I cannot believe you do not see anything wrong with them, on repeated viewing. OK, here is everyone's chance to shut me up until I see RotK. Defend the Dead Marshes scene where Gollum talks about the candles, the little lights, but there are no candles (unless the corpses have flame throwers). Never mind that the ghosts look like they're from a Roger Corman movie. Please explain to me why they didn't put candles in the extended edition, or take the candles reference out of the original script. Really, please explain to me how you accept this and think there's nothing wrong with it. Post a *good* explanation and I promise not to post another negative word about LotR until RotK comes out.

The Kid - all that he seems? Possible Spoilers

    by cugel79

Okay, this might end up as spoilers but also might be totly wrong, but -
I've been following this flick closley as a Hellboy fan, and there's a few things that point to Meyers being something other than the nancy-boy sympathetic character you guys are reacting so negatively to.
First, this is a love story between Hellboy and Liz, with Meyers making it a triangle. Second, apparenlty Liz and Meyers have a really nasty fistfight towards the end of the movie. Third, Del Toro has assured us that one of the characters will end up as a evil floating Nazi head in a jar for the possible sequel, and Meyers is the only character I know of that would really fit the bill, being human and male. This sure as heck ain't proof, but I think there's something tricky going on here. That's just one of the many ways this trailer dosen't represent what's actually going on in this movie.
Anyway. I'm looking forward to this. Any of you folks who have seen Blade II and are judging Del Toro from that, all I have to say is that it wasn't his script, and see The Devil's Backbone. Amazing movie. If that movie dosen't at least make you want to root for this one, you aren't human.
And GypsyTRobot - are you saying that one factor ruins the whole movie for you? If so, I hope you're still in high school. that would give you some kind of excuse for being a hyper-critical adolescent.

With a name like Hellboy I wasn't expecting some dumb ass men in black bullshit. I could go my whole life without another secret group that battles the paranormal/alien threats that the rest of the world doesn't know about. LAME ASS!!! I thinj the first and LAST word on this subject was Ghostbusters.

I can only assume the flames that kept popping up in different areas in the marshes, were what Gollum implied. Then again, not having read that part of the book, I sure as hell didn't have my viewing of the movie spoiled by any lack of minute details.

I've read your responces to my post. As soon as I saw my name in them, I was like, aw damn, here comes the flaming, but to my suprise, my restoration in humanity has somewhat returned, you both actually wrote normal responces without an ounce of insult. thanks, theres hope for us all yet. And I don't mind contructive critisism, or any kind really, I just hate nonsence like " it fucking sux my hairy balls!". anyway, as for gypsyTrobots post about gollum and the DeadMarshes; gollum didn't mean "candles" in the literal sense, he was just referring to all the lights the dead people made. that is, the flames, because candles do have those, afterall. There were plenty of obvious flames scattered about, so one can only assume that was what he was talking about, but does it really matter? I mean, are you judging the entire movie off of something simple you misuderstood? favorite scene; " Roast chicken!? oh my dear Sam..."

    Re: harrysoldout

    by mickfinn

First off, I'm going to assume that either you didn't truly read my post or that you're a moron. Either way, since I don't have the benefit of putting on a puupet show to reiterate my points to you, I'll go slow.
I HAVE disagreed with Harry in the past. His pointless abuse of Paul Thomas Anderson is something I have taken him to task before many, many times, because it makes him no better than half of the venomous pricks that hang out here. And BLADE II was not the orgamsic joyride he described in his review, and I made that clear before. You know fuck all about my opinions and you don't have the evidence or the research to back it up. What I said ( and if I'm going too fast, let me know ) is that not every positive review from Harry's mouth is an immediate sell-out. He has mentioned before that he is a fan of Mike Mignola's HELLBOY comics and that was before his buddy Del Toro's name was even mentioned as director. And dragging out the old "you probably liked Star Wars 1 and 2, asshole" argument is one that doesn't seem to be based on any fact or even opinion. As for being one of those fanboys who likes everything I see, I don't and I sure as fuck don't have to justify my choices to you with a list of my likes and dislikes.
I suggest you go back and read the post, or better yet, find a hobby that will curb your hostility. They're doing great things with anger management these days. In fact, with a name like harrysoldout, I think you should probably stay as far away from this site for the sake of your health because it's obviously affecting you... jeezus, what a fuckwit.

Let's stop analyzing this thing like the Zapruder tape, and wait for the movie to actually hit theatres. Till, then, sharpen your knives, Scorn Brigade. I'm sure you'll be so busy scanning the screen to find something to hate, there's no way you'll get anything remotely close to entertainment from it.

I don't really know much about Hellboy, I just know he's a demon who doesn't want to be evil or something. The main thing is, it didn't show enough of Hellboy, I'd like to see more of him. The design is interesting enough for me to want to see more.

The sad thing is, the trailer is kinda cool right up until you see Hellboy himself. Then it's all downhill from there. But I'm sure this will still do well at the box office. I would have loved to see this when I was twelve, so twelve year old boys across the planet will probably turn out in large numbers.

    Yawn more evil Nazis

    by leoo

Can Hollywood get even a teeny bit more creative with its villainy? How about the Commies? Last I checked they killed millions in camps, commited aggression, had evil schemes, brave people resisted, all kinds of great stories could be told from real life. And plenty of iconography too, red stars, hammer and sickles, etc...

    by gere's assgerbil

only they like to go by the euphemism "liberals." Thus, the Nazis are still Hollywood's villain of choice. By the way, Tim Curry had much better make-up in Ridley Scott's Legend than the get-up that Ron Perlman's wearing.
