ABC Yanks KAREN SISCO!!

Published at:  Nov 15, 2003 9:04:00 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Well, at least we won’t have to tape “South Park” now!

The Associated Press reported Saturday that the best new show on television, “Karen Sisco,” has been yanked from the ABC schedule.

The network now intends to hold the six unaired episodes of the show’s 13-episode order until March.

“We love this show, but it has become increasingly obvious that it's not working on Wednesday nights," ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne told the AP Friday. "Rather than give up, we're going to complete production on the remaining episodes and aggressively relaunch the series this March in a new time period."

"Sisco" had been getting soundly clobbered by NBC warhorse “Law & Order,” which has proven durable enough to push CBS’s “Brotherhood of Poland, N.H.” off the schedule as well.

that the TV networks are run by crack addicted chimps. What did they expect, putting it after the Bachelor and up against Law & Order? Dammit!

I'll be there when they show it's last few episodes in March, but I doubt it can recover from this. Oh well, it might make a nice DVD set some day.

    FUCK YOU ABC!!!!!!!!!

Too many "Girls Kick Ass" shows, guys are getting sick of it.

    by sexybeast

Regardless of what the media wants people to think, men still make up the majority of TV viewers. And while the "Girls Kick Ass" revolution was popular, it has reached a saturation point and gotten old. Just look at the numbers for sporting events on TV lately. Guys have gone back to the old stand bys because tv shows have become boring.

Of course, it's one of the few shows I enjoyed........everything I watch ABC yanks. Remember The Job with Denis Leary? That's why ABC stands for Already Been Cancelled! Maybe we'll end up with more of this reality TV crap.......don't we watch TV to ESCAPE reality?

    by fabfunk

as easy a target ABC and Disney are, this is clearly the viewers' fault. It was a gutsy move to schedule against LAW AND ORDER, and it simply didn't work. So... fuck the viewers... (consequently, I really, really wanted to see this, but I never got a chance, seeing as I don't own a TV and my friend is a big SOUTH PARK fan).

why don't they put karen sisco on right before monday night football? i've been arguing for a while now that abc should put either karen sisco or alias on just before mnf. both shows have quite a bit of appeal to both sexes and i often find myself channel surfing for the hour or so before mnf.

    ABC does it again

    by xocxoc

see my comments on the last Sisco thread, ABC does not comprehend what a good TV Show is or what to do with it when they accidentally get one. The trend of ABC killing shows that were great before their prime goes back at least to "Twin Peaks" of 12 years ago. I'm down to one ABC show left (Alias).

Gugino and Garner! I mean, no one with half a brain watches 10-8, and Karen Sisco could lure feminists away from American Dreams, and no show can follow Simpsons no Sundays. So why not put Karen Sisco on at eight/seven whatever on Sundays?

I watched the first episode, Blah! Boring,"Girls kick ass!" dribble. Carla Cugino, and Robert Forrester should stick to film, it's what they're good at.
The only thing I watch on ABC now is Alias, and that is even starting to go downhill. Everything is either idiotic one hour dramas, fucking sitcoms, or reality shows. I think I'll stick to HBO thanks.

ABC killing more quality, no surprise

    by parnellbc

The minute the first episode ended I feared for its life as a series. ABC and FOX in my opinion make the worst scheduling decisions for good shows. Hell, I was surprised that Alias made it to year two. I still believe that to be a great show, but the only ABC show I watch. Lets hope it gets a better time slot in the Spring.

    Worst Network Cancellation Decisions?

    by hillarylovesme

    1. Firefly ... 2. Boomtown ... 3. Karen Sisco ... I'm sure there's more, but I've repressed those memories. Anyone got a list? I'm sure I'm missing a whole bunch of great shows the nets cancelled before their time.

Shows Are Never Given Time To Find Their Audience Nowadays

    by barron34

If Cheers premiered today, it would be cancelled before it got popular, and NBC would be out millions and millions of dollars. Shows need time to find their audiences, and current Network decision making prohibits shows that do not immediately get stellar ratings. This is very bad business thinking, in my opinion. Karen Sisco is a high quality show that needs time to find its audience. It took Cheers a few seasons to take hold, and that is usually the case with most series. Netwroks need to reconsider this half-baked strategy of pulling shows that do not immediately hit.

    Effect of reality shows..

    by hillarylovesme

Someone made the excellent point up above that maybe the trend of cheapily produced reality TV hit shows made the nets more chary of spending "big" money on unproven shows; all they'll lavish money on are big stars and hit shows. The result is that actors in really successful shows get bribed out the yin-yang, networks keep shovelling money onto fewer and fewer hits, and fledgling shows with a creative edge get tossed out more easily. I wasn't a TV watcher before the 1990s, but I have to hope that television is only getting better, that strong creative voices are starting to be able to make themselves heard. If so, the recent trend toward networks putting their eggs in relatively fewer baskets is dismaying. If talent is increasing, so should their opportunities for success.

    Pulling out the list

    by gheorghe zamfir

Wonderland, Sport's Night, Gideon's Crossing, My So Called Life, Thirysomething, Cupid, The Job, Once and Again, Miracles. But look on the bright side, now they have more room to fill their schedule with umpteenth variation on Full House and their umpteenth and a half variation of The Bachelor.

    Morons

    by howstone

OK, think back: how many people, when Herc raved about this show back in September (and rightly so), said that it would be so good that ABC would have absolutely NO CLUE what to do with it and cancel it before its time? The list above hits the mark pretty damn well; if a show isn't a formulaic hit or in a proven genre (law, medicine, cops, family sitcom), these idiots have no idea how to promote it. Karen Sisco had quality performances, good writing, and Carla Cugino, who is so hot it's scary. However, the fact that it assumed that its audience had a brain was a little too much for the schmucks at ABC who don't.

Time used to be this DID Appeal to guys!

    by drath

It's about a HOT BABE WITH A GUN! That used to appeal to the lowest common denominator of young male viewers just fine. I've noticed a backlash against "girls kicking ass" on the net lately, though only on fanboy sites. But I don't know where some people get the idea that the media has been lying about the importance of the young male demographic. That's all they've talked about this season in the news--too many shows like Joan of Arcadia appealing to girls and women and not the highly sought after males 18-45 demo. But I don't understand how this show gets lumped into that complaint. They used to say shows about strong women like Murphy Brown and Roseanne appealed to men. Seriously! Then there was Xena. Then Buffy. Then Alias. How is this show suddenly girly? Like I said, the backlash theory could be more accurate, and it's a pity because this show wasn't like the others. It's not a Charlie's Angels or Buffy/Alias fantasy. She's not Wonder Woman, she gets hurt. The only time I noticed a highly unlikely moment of Karen fighting someone she shouldn't have been able to beat was that big foreign-speaking guy (don't remember what his ethnicity was) who wanted his wife to get him his knife. However it did show her getting slugged pretty good in a men's room and losing her fugitive because of it this past week. Now maybe there's a new rising wave of anti-feminism(or anything perceived to be feminisim) born from too many "tough chick" shows. But dammit, this was a good show, it should NOT be the sacrificial lamb. If ABC doesn't bring it back without retooling it then this season of television is utterly worthless.

    what next after March?

    by slicksean36

so....does that mean when they say relaunch to they mean they'll relaunch it on a different time zone in March and if it does good they'll pick it up for next season? or what...because if thats not their intention whats the point in bringing it back in the first place, i'm SO pissed that its being pulled but seriously whats the point if their not gonna move it to a different time...and stuff...

plus its not really a 10pm show....i mean look at NYPD Blue the only fictional show on ABC on at 10 besdies Karen Sisco, that is deffinatly a 10pm show for a 10pm audience Karen Sisco shouldnt be on at 10...more like 9 (but not on wednesdays to much competition with West Wing)

    by vectormatrix

If you had said there are too many actions shows on TV, that's one thing. But it seems you only take issue with seeing strong female characters simply because they're not men. --

It seems there is always someone complaining 'oh look there's another show with old people, black people, fat people, gay people and etc.

We are living in a time when it is no longer bold or unusual for television to recognize the diversity of the world we live in. But it seems as if there are many people still living in the past; balking at the very idea of a television protagonist that isn't a 'generic young white male.'

A show with class and style gets the axe while dozens of lame retreads and knock-offs carry on. Never underestimate the lack of taste in American viewers.
Maybe HBO will pick it up. After "Karen" gets cut, I'll be down to sports, "24", and "The Simpsons". That is what I watch on the regular networks. I personally can't wait until the networks get their ass bitten off when they realize that syndicating reality shows is not a viable option.
